- The Microsoft Zune, with its intuitive interface and solid playback performance, will please most users. But lukewarm format support and the cool but limited Wi-Fi capability will have advanced users seeking more. The Zune is a very good start, though.

Zune (30GB, brown) price range: $431.93 - $499.95

The good: The Microsoft Zune has very good playback performance of audio, video, and photos; intuitive and colorful interface; good FM radio with RDS; works well with Zune Marketplace software; integrated wireless allows sharing of songs (limited) and photos; many accessories available at launch.
The bad: The Microsoft Zune is not backward compatible with WMA-DRM9; weak native video support (cannot play protected content) and no video offerings from Zune Marketplace; cannot be used as a hard drive (and no UMS support); proprietary USB; cannot use Wi-Fi to sync, stream, or purchase content; minimal bundled accessories; no podcast directory; maximum capacity is 30GB.
The bottom line: The Microsoft Zune, with its intuitive interface and solid playback performance, will please most users. But lukewarm format support and the cool but limited Wi-Fi capability will have advanced users seeking more. The Zune is a very good start, though.

Great but eventually...
by horrayforbikes on June 21, 2009
Pros: SO i've had my zune for well over a year.
Sound is great.
Ticks and glitches were cleared up by firmware updates.
The software is pretty easy to use & logical.
Dropped it more than i care to think a/b & it was fine.
Third party accessories aplentyCons: My zune, my boyfriend's, and my sister's have all started acting funny lately. Mine & my sister's will randomly shut off and restart, or will show it's playing the song, and no sound will come out. My boyfriend's will freeze up when changing songs.
Summary: I really do like Zune. I like the sound, the interface, games, wireless sharing, and it's durability (it still looks like it did the day i got it).

I am pissed that all of ours have started acting up.
However, if I get a new high capacity mp3 player, I will just get one of the new zunes, not an iPod.
Oh, and if you are looking for headphones, I can't say enough about the Zune v2 premium headphones! I have owned oh so many headphones/earphones. The sound is superb for $25-35!!! Great range, not shy with bass (but not absurd) and really blocks out noise! I keep 'em in in the NYC subway even if my batt's are dead! -
He Makes It Sound Difficult
by akljsdj on December 29, 2008
Pros: It Is Easy To Navigate You Don't Have Too Go All That Way Just To Adjust The EQ You Just Have To Hold Down The Back Button For Three Seconds It Is Too Social If You Get The ZIM Or Zune Instant Messenger Which Lets You Meat New People On A Loud Bus.
Cons: The Software Is Sometimes Sneaky And Does Stuff Behind Your Back You Have To Pay Close Attention To Counter Attack The Zune Software It May Sync Unwanted Pictures Videos And Music.
Summary: If You Don't Like The Zune That Is Fine Because It Makes It Cheaper For Everyone Else While Everyone Is Price Gauging On Ipods I'm Getting The Bargain ...

Summary: Don't waste your time with this product. It isn't that the device is bad, it's actually pretty good, but the software is the worst and keeps getting worse with every new release and update. To show you how bad this software is, Microsoft has an entire web site devoted to trouble shooting problems!!! Instead of developing the web site, maybe they should should've made a better effort on the software. If you don't mind headaches, wasted hours, and never getting the program to work correctly, then by all means buy this. Otherwise I suggest the iPod. The higher price is worth it.

great basic mp3 with big screen

Summary: I bought 2 zunes at thanksgiving for $70 each. I for me and the other for a teenager. The zune is so simple to use it almost seems hard to figure it out. 2nd gen software was downloaded and it has a few quirks but nothing major. Editing music is very tedious, so do it before you sync with zune. Purchase the better Zune earbuds, because the zune standard issue aren't near as nice. The package only comes with a usb cable so you'll have to spend a few more $ on a wall charger. I used ebay and got a Zune travel package and one of those cheap bundles of goodies, including a screen guard and silicon case. I'm really only using it for music, so i haven't put any video or podcast in yet. Its a brick, compared to those little nanos and if you take it in the cold (I use it for skiing), make sure its fully charged as the battery doesn't like to shiver, (But what tiny electric device does). Theres a big zune community with a lot of complainers (for spending such little money compared to an ipod) you can't expect everything to be perfect. Since I live in Canada I can't be a member of Zune community but i can access the info.....soon we will have em sold here and then we'll podcast poutine recipes and show you how to pummel timbits in the harbour!

Summary: My 10 year old son got the Zune for Christmas from Santa. I had nothing but problems from the get go. After 7 ½ hours and three calls to Tech Support (which were friendly and didn’t keep me on hold much) the device completely locked up and I was instructed to wait 3-5 business days to get the box to send it in for repair. Add 3-5 more for it to reach them, 10-15 for the repair to be completed, and then 3-5 for it to come back. Throw in a couple of weekends and it’s nearly a month until my son can use his defective product. I took it back to the store where we bought it and we got an I-pod instead. After 2 ½ hours he was watching videos and we had installed most of his CDs.
The software was horrible. There was no manual for use included, nor was there any documentation on line. Very few songs were in the Zune Marketplace – you had to go to outside sources and then try to download them into the Zune software. I couldn’t even get it to work with Windows Media Player made by Microsoft. Tech Support was unable to get it to work either – whether that was a software problem or ultimately a problem with our device I do not know.
As this was our first portable player ever, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I thought I would be safe and happy with a product that had the Microsoft name on it. I could not have been any more disappointed. -

Summary: I happen to love everything about the Zune especially after the price drop. I had heard a few negative things about the firmware for a while but had purchased mine after it was updated (to version 2.2 I believe). I can't say what the navigation and functionality of the device was like prior to the update but from what I see with the new version, it is phenomenal. My friend bought an ipod and was cursing himself after I showed him the Zune. Overall an intelligent investment for anyone looking for an amazing media player for a decent price. Props to Microsoft.
