Canon Pixma MX410 price range: $72.47 - $119.94

The good: Inexpensive; includes auto-document feeder; robust software suite; 1.8-inch LCD; Wi-Fi.
The bad: Lacks media card reader; slow output performance.
The bottom line: The Canon Pixma MX410 isn't the fastest printer in its image class, but its auto-document feeder, wireless connectivity, and the comprehensive Canon software suite earn this multifunction printer our recommendation for light to moderate monthly output.
The Canon Pixma MX410 is a worthwhile all-in-one solution for people who need an output solution for intermittent monthly use to print out boarding passes, office documents, or occasional snapshot photos. Its dual-ink cartridge bay limits its output performance so we don't recommend it for photo-specific use, but you'll certainly be satisfied with the Pixma's graphic and text quality. Add extra features like wireless connectivity, an auto-document feeder, and Canon's exclusive HD Movie Print that lets you pull and print still photos out of Canon compatible HD video cameras, and this $100 device is more than worth its price.
Design and features
The design of the Pixma MX410 is streamlined so that every drawer, tray, and port folds up flush into the self-contained body. The result is a very sleek matte black exterior with all of the buttons you need to adjust the settings placed conveniently on the front panel. Since the default function is to print, the rest of the hot keys (copy, fax, scan) are the largest on the panel along with backlit power and start buttons and a blinking alarm for low ink and paper jams.
Last year's Pixma MX330 is no longer offered on the Canon Web site, but you can still spend the same amount and benefit from a dedicated 1.8-inch LCD display. The MX410 is simpler with only a two-line dot-matrix graphic display in the middle of the control panel, and although it's not as fancy as a color LCD, it's still adequate for all the day-to-day print, scan, and fax functionality.
Most AIOs don't typically include auto-document feeders (ADFs) with printers at this price point, so we're happy to see that Canon includes one to make it much easier to scan or copy stacks of documents. The ADF can only handle up to 30 pages at a time, so the majority of your blank media goes through the rear input tray that holds 100 pages, and a plastic guide folds out of the rear tray to corral larger media.
Output, on the other hand, is a much more simplified process: all outbound prints just pop out of the front drawer onto an angled lip that folds out of the main body. We're disappointed to see that the MX410 doesn't include a multimedia card reader for direct prints, but you can hook up a digital camera directly to the printer through the PictBridge USB port on the bottom of the unit.
The top of the printer lifts open to reveal the standard 8.5-inch-by-11-inch scanner bay, but you can also pop that open and access the two-ink cartridge bay below. To keep costs low, the MX410 only uses two inks: one for black and one for tricolors. While we prefer five or sometimes even six separate cartridge tanks to cut down on the cost of consumables, it makes sense that a printer at this accessible price only has two tanks. If you plan to use your printer for more snapshot photo prints or graphical documents, a printer with separate ink cartridge bays like the Canon Pixma MX870 will prove more economical.
The package includes a driver CD with all the installation files you need to customize your prints. Within those settings, you can choose between commonly used templates like standard, business, paper saving, and photo printing that adjust the type of media, paper size, and source.
Additionally, the driver provides you with adjustments for borderless printing, vivid photos, gray scale prints, and even manual color intensities by numeral increments. It also features a pop-up print status monitor that shows the current job, document name, device owner, status, and a graphical representation of the ink cartridge levels. Conveniently, this pop-up automatically disappears once the job in queue is finished printing, but we prefer status monitors that show us the page and progress of the print.
The driver also automatically installs Canon's Easy Photo Print EX software onto your computer that flaunts all the creative features of the MX410. It allows you to print simple snapshot photos on the fly, create whole albums of artwork, and print calendars with custom pictures, as well as custom stickers using Canon's proprietary sticker paper.
The explorer window on the main page works just like a Windows Explorer pane, except we prefer HP's Solution Center layout that automatically scans and detects printable pictures on your hard drive for you. Canon's creative suite is incredibly easy to use and even lets you make simple photo edits like red-eye correction, face sharpening, and blemish removal, which is great for people who don't want to deal with the hassle of third-party editing software like Adobe Photoshop.
The copy functions on the MX410 are relatively standard for a multifunction: you can make up to 99 copies at once and easily adjust the contrast and magnification of a document from 25 to 400 percent, all directly through the settings on the LCD menus. The scanner gives you two options to scan either single photos and documents or a stack of documents using the ADF.
You also have several choices in terms of where you want to send a scanned document, such as directly to a PC as a JPEG, TIFF, or BMP file, to a PDF file, or you can attach it to an e-mail with the option to scan and convert to text using optical character recognition (OCR). All scanned files are placed into your custom "My Box" directory, which displays all scanned and imported images as well as recently saved images onto the hard drive for future projects.
Finally, the MX 410 is also one of the first Canon image devices to include its new HD Movie Print feature that rewards adopters of the Canon hardware ecosystem with the ability to pull still snapshots out of videos shot with compatible HD video cameras. We tested the printer with a Canon Powershot S95 top-flight handheld camera, and were impressed with the Canon Solution Menu EX software's step-by-step walkthrough instructions.
The software allows you to edit video images to prepare a clip for capture--grabbing still shots from the video is as simple as selecting a video snippet and either capturing a group of 10 frames or hitting the "capture" button to select single images. Once that's finished, you can also edit the image to reduce noise and sharpen images. Of course, the SD95 is only capable of 720p video resolution, so you'll see better performance out of a true 1080p digital SLR like the Canon EOS 5D Mark II.
Performance
As you can tell from the benchmarks below, the MX410 demonstrates only average output speeds. It lags behind the competition in the graphics speed test at just 2.03 pages per minute (PPM), although the difference between the scores is so slight that you won't likely notice it unless you're printing stacks of documents at a time. Since this isn't a full-blown photo printer, we can forgive the MX410 for hot-dogging the photo print test, since the rest of the scores are close enough to the competition.
(Longer bars indicate better performance)
| Presentation speed (pages per minute) | Â Â | Photo speed (1 Sheet) | Â Â | Graphics speed (PPM) | Â Â | Text speed (PPM) | Â Â |
We also have several complaints about the output quality of the MX410. We printed all photo and graphical documents on the paper that Canon provided and we were still largely dissatisfied with the results. Black text on standard 20 pound paper appears nicely darkened, but a closer inspection reveals characters with jagged edges and step-downs, fuzziness in small font sizes, and harsh contrasts in color blends.
In addition, our color graphics prints came out grainy with a dull hue marring the images. Luckily, our 3-inch-by-5-inch photo turned out OK with sharper lines and an even saturation, but the skin tones in the portrait shots still couldn't shake the dreary palette. As stated, the MX410 will definitely satisfy households where cost and robust features are more of an issue than just output quality, but dedicated shooters should seek out a more capable machine to bring their photos to life.
Service and support
Canon offers a limited one-year warranty with the Pixma MX410. The company also offers toll-free phone support and 24-7 e-mail support, should you run into any problems. Extra features including online manuals, drivers, FAQs, and ink cartridge order forms can be found on Canon's Web site.

Summary: I am extremely pleased with this product. I am a freelance writer working from home, and I don't have to print large-scale jobs. This machine fits my needs perfectly. It is small and compact, fitting nicely into a small space and folding up when not in use so that nothing sticks out. (This is important not only because of space considerations, but also so that my cats don't decide to lie down on a feeder or output tray and possibly break it.)
The cartridges are easy to change, and not overly expensive compared with those of other printers. The print quality is good. The print speed is rather slow, so the machine would not be appropriate for someone who regularly prints large-scale jobs.
The copying function is similar in all respects to the printing function.
The scan function is great! It creates PDFs of single- or multiple-page documents and gives you the option of where to file them or just saves them in a date-specific desktop file of scans.
I have not had occasion to use the fax function. (The ease of scanning documents into PDFs and sending them via email pretty much makes faxing unnecessary.)
The one thing I would change is that print jobs arrive in the output tray in opposite-page order. This means that I have to remember to specify that I want the document printed back-to-front, or be faced with the tedium of reversing the pages after printing. For some reason I can't seem to make this the default setting.
There's a neat desktop icon that can be expanded to show separate icons for each function. Unfortunately, if the option of showing the single icon to avoid desktop clutter is used, that icon has a tendency to disappear, and I can't seem to get it back without rebooting. I'm not sure if that is a problem with the Canon machine or of Windows 7.
All in all, I highly recommend this machine as an economical and efficient buy for a small home office.

Summary: Canon again produces a reliable multifunction printer with enough features to provide good value for the SOHO user. With two paper inputs, copy, fax and scan options and great software, users office users should be happy with the output. A simple front panel interface makes on-the-fly changes easy. While not super complicated to setup in WiFi mode, users running security on their routers will need to pay heed to the alternate instructions. As an OFFICE (not photo) printer it does the job well.
As always with Canon, keeping the printer in ink remains somewhat expensive. I own two other Canon photo printers that produced great photos with ridiculous than merely unreasonable ink cartridge costs.
Whether they use a little or a lot of ink per page, Canon OEM ink is expensive. Because I love Canon quality and reliability (my S820 is 9-10 years old), I shop mightily for deals on Canon ink.
Other than that, this printer lives up to its price point and will serve the Canon line well.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I purchased this device after reading the cnet review and I have not been disappointed. The installation and network setup was easy and the print, scan, and fax quality are very good for a home use device. I have not used it for photo printing, so I cannot comment on that capability. The software and drivers work very well and I was very impressed with the way it manages the sharing of a single phone line with a voice telephone. I recommend this device for anyone that needs an all-in-one device for moderate home use.

Updated on Feb 14, 2012Summary: pointless buy if you already have wired printers and use macs
In the mean time we found a friendly tech who helped us with the wireless setup. Working on an old Mac-mini and on a MacBook Pro 2007. With extra software you can also get the iPhone and the iPad to work.

Cheap, may drive you insane with stupid software
by Shadowauto on April 28, 2011
Pros: Cheap. Prints decent.
Cons: Canon, like most others, makes the money from the hideously overpriced ink. This printer goes through ink like a fire hose. The most frustrating networking experience I have ever had, it is the farthest thing from plug and play if you have more than 1 pc
Summary: Will never buy another Canon product unless held at gun point.

Good printer for the price.
by FinchMan215 on January 19, 2012
Pros: Wireless (b,g,n)
Fax, Scanner, Printer
Easy Install (unless computer challenged)
Decent quality, does the job.Cons: Like any other "Ink Jet" there is the cost of the cartiges. They normally run for 24 bucks per cartige. In my opinion not to expensive.

Summary: I bought this printer for school work mostly. At $79 is not bad at all. It took me less then 40 mins to set this printer up on 4 computers and my phone. The install is not idiot proof so some basic computer knowledge is necessary. Yet it was fairly simple from my point of view given that my SSID is nonbroadcast and N-only.
Installation was as followed:
Unwrap printer
Plug into power outlet
Install printer using the included CD using the "Network" option only.
The install guides you, when prompted you plug in the USB cable (included) and hit next.(You only need to plug in the USB on the first computer you install in order to set up the network on the printer)
Follow onscreen instructions by simple READING and fill in the blanks. SSID and your KEY/Password. Hit next.
Hit next again and wait....done.
To add additional computers you simply install the printer using the same CD on each computer. Make sure to select the Network option only! not the USB. This time around the software will find the printer in the network and will show up on a list. Select the printer and hit next. Next.. done.
Easy.
It prints slow and the ink usage can be mitigated by simply choosing a lower quality print. I only print black and white word documents so I set it to the lowest setting. I've had this for a lil over 2 weeks now and no problems.
My personal opinion people who have disconnection problems have other computer/network issues and are prob unrelated to the printer. I don't use mac, don't care to much for macs. So my experience is with Windows Vista only. Just to note save yourself the problems and READ the instructions and DON'T PLUG THE USB until the install prompts you.(If USB is required). Good printer Canon is a good brand and I've never had any problems. I recommend this printer HIGHLY for everyday document printing and photo printing(photo printing consumes more ink)its a good deal for the price. -
Great printer for light, occasional use!!
by Starfleet007 on November 4, 2011
Pros: *Actually, the ink is a very good value. Always buy the extra large cartridges. If you don't use lots of color, buy the standard size and set your machine to print gray-scale only to save on color for only when you need it. Also, set it for fast printin
Cons: *LCD screen is small and not back-lit. Not a major thing, but it would have been nice to have been lit.
*In a networked world, I think all printers should have an Ethernet port available.Summary: I rated this machine for what it is. For under $100, I wasn't expecting a speed demon. I don't need one for occasional use. The XL black cartridge ...
Summary: I rated this machine for what it is. For under $100, I wasn't expecting a speed demon. I don't need one for occasional use. The XL black cartridge can do an estimated 401 pages of mixed text and graphics set at the default mode which is the normal setting, not the fast setting. You will have the ink last much longer than you expected set at the fast mode.
Unless you are printing a lot of the same item, this machine with the single multi-color cartridge is great for low color users. Every time you replace the ink, you get a new print head on the cartridge ready for use. I have had the multi cartridge set ups and if you don't use it enough, they can dry up and ruin your built in print head or you will pay a lot of money to replace the print head if its replaceable. I really like this machine and recommend to anyone who fits the criteria for its features. -

Handy to have for wireless printing, scanning, and copying, but would need a separate machine if you are doing heavy printing.
