Epson Artisan 800 price range: $149.99 - $299.99

The good: Prints high-quality color photos and documents; industry topping output speed; small footprint; integrated CD drive for custom prints.
The bad: Extremely buggy software constantly disrupts work flow; flimsy plastic output tray; delicate input tray prone to paper jams.
The bottom line: The Epson Artisan 800 produces impressive color prints, photos, and text documents, and it outpaces the competition in almost all of our speed tests. We're impressed by its performance, but hesitate to recommend this printer based on the poor build quality and error-prone software.
The Epson Artisan 800 printer is a multifunctional printer that can also copy, scan, and fax documents. The $299 device is faster than other inkjet printers, and we like the large LCD screen and the built-in CD drive, but it's severely marred by buggy software and flimsy components. We spent more time taking apart the paper trays, fixing paper jams, and reinstalling drivers than actually using the printer. If you can actually get the printer to work on a consistent basis, the Artisan 800 can produce fast, well-formed photo prints. For the sake of your sanity, we recommend investing in a more dependable multifunction printer, such as the Canon Pixma MX700 or the HP Photosmart C8180.
Design and features

A flatbed scanner hides underneath the Artisan 800's top-loading, 30 page auto-document feeder for the copier and fax machine. The large 3.5-inch LCD sits prominently on the front of the printer with hinges on either side that control the angle of the screen. Only two buttons fill the rest of the space on the panel: "Power" and "CD eject." A CD/DVD tray, a unique printer feature, pops out from below the paper trays when you press the eject button and you can use it for copying images onto a blank CD or printing your own custom labels. The separate output and input trays rest below the display, and two memory card slots as well as a PictBridge port round out the front of the control center.

The trays that feed paper into the printer are the main source of our gripe with the Artisan 800. First, the plastic that Epson uses for the folding output tray is so thin that they bounce around at the slightest touch. We get that Epson wants to make the accessories collapsible to save space, but cutting corners on flimsy materials certainly throws speed bumps in the user experience. We can't comment precisely on how the trays will hold up to months or years of constant use, but even they already feel like they're about to snap in half.
In addition, you have to push the output tray all the way back into the device to pull out the input tray below it. The main paper tray holds 120 sheets of paper, and a separate, smaller tray for photo paper slides loosely across the top. Both trays suffer from serious design flaws: instead of designating fixed slots for the standard paper sizes (A4, Letter, and so on), the main tray has a series of confusing notch marks with several markings of the same size. Epson makes it harder by forcing you to line up the tab with the notch marks, which takes time and precision since the tabs can move freely anywhere along the slider. If you're even slightly off, the printer will pick up several sheets of paper at time, jam, and freeze your job. We much prefer the HP Photosmart C8180, another printer with dual paper feed trays that makes refilling easy with several preassigned size slots.
We also encountered issues with the software drivers included in the box. After experiencing severe banding after printing just a few photos, we aligned the print head and things seemed to be working until an unexplained error popped up on the screen prompting us to power down the printer and restart. We followed Epson's instructions and even tried searching for an updated driver, but still experienced the same intermittent errors. We also reinstalled the driver several times, restarted and power cycled the printer and our desktop with no success. The random errors disrupted our work flow--we almost spent more time behind the printer freeing up jams than actually testing the device.
These design issues are especially unfortunate because the Artisan 800 actually has some impressive features. When it works properly, it can streamline your printing work by eliminating the need for a physical computer to act as the liaison. You can perform most functions directly through the printer. For example, you can plug your xD, Memory Stick, Compact Flash, or Secure Digital card directly into the front media reader and edit your photos on the large 7.8 inch touch screen. Granted, you can only crop, rotate, and enlarge, but amateur photographers will be thankful for the automated fix options.
Creative types can also take advantage of the robust personalization options, including custom coloring books, passport and ID photo sheets, photo index sheets, greeting cards, and still movie clips. All of these options are also easy to use with the ArcSoft Print Creations software included in the package. There's also a convenient option to print out blank college-ruled or wide-ruled lined paper.
Performance
In terms of output speed, the Epson Artisan 800 sits in direct competition with the Canon Pixma MX700. We also put it up against several other all-in-one printers in the same price range, but the Artisan 800's scores blow theirs out of the water. For example, while the Kodak ESP 5 took its time printing a sheet of color graphics at a blistering 2.21 pages per minute, the Artisan flew across the finish line, finishing our test at almost three times the speed at 6.06 pages per minute. And even though the MX700 puts up a good fight in the text and color scanning qualifiers, it's no match for Epson in the Photo speed test, who came in at more than double the pages per minute. The Artisan 800 is without question one of the speediest printers we've tested, when it's working. In our evaluation, the Epson ruined its early finish with a handful of mechanical failures that took more time to fix than the testing itself.
(Longer bars indicate better performance)
| Color scanning | Photo speed (1 sheet) | Color graphics speed | Presentation speed | Color text speed |

We're also very impressed with the Artisan 800's capability to produce solid images across a variety of media materials and sizes. We printed our stock image on 20 pound plain paper and Epson's own premium glossy photo paper at both 8.5 by 11 inches as well as 4 by 6 inches. Each time, the output quality displayed solid lines, clear pictures, and bright colors. The printer uses six separate ink cartridges that you can purchase individually on Epson's Web site. The embedded printing options in the driver software are more extensive than the competition, showing job progress, pagination, and preferences for fine and normal lines, customizable presettings, and a maximum resolution of 5,760x1,440dpi.

Photo quality, no hassle setup, after a month I love it

Pros: One footoprint versus 3 before
Excellent photo print quality
Really easy to use but has more if you go look
Complete dust cover
Great multi page feed for fax, scan or copy
No interaction 2 side printing with duplexer
145USD, cheaper consumablesCons: Duplexer hard to find in CAN
Print could be crisper but not bad

Summary: I find the editor's review hard to understand having used this unit for over a month now. It installed itself on my network with no intervention and has worked without a glitch. It easily accomodated Windows 2000,XP, and Vista. I haven't had a single paper jam through multi reams even though our previous HP units used to have a jam at least every other day. We're running through our second or third ink cartridges and that's still lower cost than our older HP units.
Feb. 1st and I still love it! The price has gone well above what I paid but definitely worth it.
It doesn't like to copy from thick hardcover books and scans need to be initiated from a computer so that the file destination is clear. The trays do appear to be flimsy but so what! They do the trick well and we're not about to sit on them. The paper tray is certainly different from the HP style but I found that it works well if you just forget your HP habits. It took me a while to realize I was trying to treat it like my HP's from the last 20 years. This was really a step out of line for us and I'm glad we took it thnks to a young technno savvy sales type.
Touch screens or buttons work the same to me, but this unit with it's stand alone network capability brings the home office to a different level for me at this price point.
Updated on Feb 1, 2009
I finally managed to get the auto duplexer and it does automatic 2 sided printing like a charm.
To answer kbchicago, the document quality is just fine to my untrained eye and it is also adjustable. I've seen comments that the black is a bit on the charcoal side but it hasn't caused us any grief. It doesn't use any greater volume of ink than any other jet as far as I can tell. Finally. the scanner works on our wireless network just like the printer although you obviously have to physically go to the machine to put the document(s) in. I extensively use the feeder for legal size pages which I always had to do in pieces before.9 out of 9 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Let me start by saying I own a LOT of tech gear and am usually an early adopter, but this is the only CNET review I've ever bothered to write despite everything I could write about. That ought to tell you something about this printer.
Despite being popular for years, I have avoided owning an all-in-one machine. I was afraid that if my scanner broke then my printer would be useless and vice versa. All-in-ones have come a long way, though. I figured it was finally safe to take the plunge.
I had some specific requirements when it came to choosing a printer. It had to be wifi compatible. It had to have excellent photo print capabilities. Lastly (and not quite as important), having a scanner would be a major perk. Despite those seemingly simple requirements, there are really only a few printers on the market that fit the bill that I found- the Epson Artisan series and Canon MP980. I decided the MP980 was too bulky and the Artisan 700 didn't have the feeder for the scanner or as high of scanning capabilities. I'm glad I got the Artisan 800.
Installation was admittedly tricky, but I'm fairly familiar with hardware so I worked my way through it. I ended up not really following the instructions. One of the on-screen prompts was blatantly wrong (at least for me) so I finished it on my own. It took a while, but everything works flawlessly - printing, scanning, and even accessing the card readers on the front of the printer via the wireless network.
The scanner is pretty responsive. I haven't challenged it too much yet, but I'll be loading a lot of my older photos to sync with my current digital collection. This scanner is proving to be more invaluable than I realized. As for quality, it has a higher optical resolution than most other all-in-ones. That's a big deal for people who are not willing to sacrifice.
As for printing, I've been fairly impressed so far. I'm really picky about color accuracy from screen to paper so I did have to burn through a few sheets of photo paper to get the results I wanted. I would think this is to be expected with all printers, though. I like that you can load both plain paper and photo paper in at once and switch between the trays on the fly. It would bother me if I had to manually switch all the time so that's a big deal for me. I also like the cd printing function. I have yet to use it, but I appreciate that its there. I already had a personal B&W laser printer that I've been using, but this new Artisan 800 might replace it completely.
As for copying, the first document seemed to take quite a while. I'm not exactly sure why. All subsequent copies have been way faster, though. Most of what I'll be copying will be receipts or text documents so I'm not particularly concerned with color rendition. As such, I was mostly copying B&W and can't comment on color copies.
A lot of people seem to complain about the paper tray. I admit that it does feel flimsy, but it spends 99.9% of its time completely inserted inside the printer so it would be really hard to break. Maybe it would get damaged in an office setting where employees are slamming things around, but for home use I don't foresee any problems. And let's be honest, this is a photo printer at heart. It's built for home use. Some people have also complained about the guides on the paper tray being confusing. I don't see where they get that. Even if it is troublesome, though, you pretty much just set it once and forget about it for the rest of the time you own the printer.
Certainly the most difficult part for me was the installation. I'm not going to fault the printer, though. It's complicated equipment. It does a lot of things. There are plenty of things to potentially go wrong. If I were hooking it up via USB I expect I would not have had any trouble. However, wifi was another matter. Also, my wifi router is under the couch so I couldn't plug the printer straight into it to set it up as the manual suggests. It did take me 2 tries, but I finally got it. For what it's worth, I never needed to call tech support. It might be a good idea to borrow a techie friend to install it for you, though.
I hate to knock the wifi, though, since its one of the printer's best features. Virtually anything that this printer can do can be done wirelessly. It's completely transparent to the user. Even the card slots on the front of the printer can be accessed wirelessly as network drives. Plus you can punch the IP address into the web browser of your choice and you have a full-fledged web configuration interface. Now that's pretty sweet.8 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great all in one printer and damn good looking too!
by fangmaschine on October 8, 2008
Pros: I print a lot of photos so this printer instantly jumped out at me because of its ultra high def photo printing capability. Also, the wireless was easy to set up and works perfectly. The interface is intuitive and it all looks so good.
Cons: at $300 this isn't a cheap printer. Also, the paper tray seems a little flimsy. Black ink goes pretty quick (luckily they give you two black cartridges). It takes up a lot of desk space as well.
Summary: I bought this product because it struck me aesthetically and had great consumer reviews. I've only had it for about three weeks so everything could still go wrong but ...
Summary: I bought this product because it struck me aesthetically and had great consumer reviews. I've only had it for about three weeks so everything could still go wrong but I'm pleased with my purchase. The print quality is fantastic and impossible to distinguish between lab prints and the ones from this printer. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a solid all in one printer that's geared primarily towards photo printing.

Great all-in-one printer, fit/finish a little lacking
Pros: -small, given feature set
-amaing print and scan quality (much better than older HP model)
-cheap ($229 at the time I bought it)
-great wireless support
-good PDF support (main feature I was looking for)
-fast (copying b/w was fast as i've seen)Cons: -software is a bit flakey, at least on x64
-paper trays are small (not for heavy duty)
-store model display broken, trying to be careful with mineSummary: I was hesitant to try Epson because I felt like their earlier printers were slow and their software not well done. But I had a coupon and gift card and ...
Summary: I was hesitant to try Epson because I felt like their earlier printers were slow and their software not well done. But I had a coupon and gift card and this seemed like the best bang for the buck, so I made the plunge.
Overall fit and finish on the drivers and trays could be better, like the reviewer said. I think the review was a bit harsh though -- this printer seems like the biggest bang for the buck if you're willing to live with it's minor flaws - no product is ever perfect. I would only recommend it for home use, not for anything too heavy duty. Scanner and print quality are out of this world. Print speed is pretty amazing. Driver issues can be worked through -- the online help isn't bad, and the errors I got installing on Vista x64 seemed to be mostly ignorable (just a few things I'd never use anyway didn't work). Scan to PDF or text software is pretty good. Upgraded my PC to Windows 7 beta and everything still works (unsupported of course). The online help specifically states that you can't use the scan to PC functions from the printer unless the printer is connected via PC. While this is annoying, you can still scan over the network, as long as you start the process from the PC. Otherwise, use USB to connect to the machine you'll do your scanning. Otherwise, using the printer from the built in controls is completely possible -- for the first few days, I did all of my printing from memory cards and didn't have to turn my PC on. I did have to follow their instructions to be able to print wirelessly, but it was easy. The software should have done it for me, but it wasn't hard in the end -- a novice user could easily do it, ametuers with a little help from the directions.
Again, while I'm disappointed that the software wasn't perfect, I think I'll be very happy to own this printer for a while to come, as it seems like a great printer, great scanner, great all-in-one, which is really what I was looking for. Maybe if Epson is paying attention, they'll release better software for it.
If you just want to plug it in and have everything work, go with another model (though I'm not sure which one). But if you can spend 30 minutes getting all the kinks worked out, and your primary concern is print quality and speed, great photo prints, plus a great all-in-one, I'm not convinces you can do a whole lot better than $229.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

outstanding all-in-one printer

Summary: We bought this all-in-one printer last week and had a great experience so far: printing pictures directly from the printer is super easy, just insert your memory card (Flash card in our case) or USB and the pictures appear on the screen. Select the one to print and the format, quality etc, et voila! In 10 seconds, you have a high-quality (at least lab-matching) 4x6 print (we used Epson Premium Glossy paper). Colors were vivid and matched the colors on the computer screen.
We next connected the printer to our 3 laptops (one Mac and 2 PCs) through a wireless network fololowing the instructions. Initial configuration was made using a PC, the Mac and the other PC were added subsequently. Installation of the software takes 30 minutes, but we did not have any problem overall (slightly more complex on the Mac but the guidance is very helpful). Wireless network allows not only to print (on paper or on printable CD/DVD ) but also to scan from the computer , which is very useful.
Built in the printer are numerous gadgets like restauring old pictures' colors or converting any picture into a drawing book page. I tried this option with watercolor paper and it worked perfectly, outlining lightly the shapes of the picture without overdiffusion of the ink. Printing CD/DVD covers is also super easy from the computer using the software provided.
We did not experienced the major issue mentioned on the CNET review: no software glitch at all. Finally, It is true that the trays look fragile, but for the price the Epson Artisan 800 delivers way more than we expected.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

You can't print if any cartridge is empty
by tsrut on September 23, 2009
Pros: print quality is good
Cons: The printer won't print if the printer thinks any cartridge is empty. For example if your cyan cartridge is empty, you can't even make a B&W copy. All other printers that I've had, will let you print but you naturally get a degraded print quality.
Summary: Don't buy this printer. It's always running out of ink, and even when you're not a real heavy print user. To make matters worst, when you run ...
Summary: Don't buy this printer. It's always running out of ink, and even when you're not a real heavy print user. To make matters worst, when you run out of ink in any cartridge epson won't let you print anything until you buy more ink even if you don't need that color ink cartridge to do your print job. You get a big sense of Epson's marketing team doing their part in maximizing ink revenue. If you're tying to do a quick simple print job and this happens you'll probably be very irratated at Espon's attitude.

Worst Purchase Ever
by eriinn on September 22, 2009
Pros: Looks Pretty , provides bragging rights because "wow your printer has a touch screen".
Cons: The fact it has a touch screen, impossibly difficult to even perform the simplest of tasks, NEVER actually changes settings to what you select , wastes insane amounts of overpriced ink because of this the list is endless.

Summary: I wasn't present at the time when my family purchased this god awful printer or it would have NEVER made it through the store doors. The touch screen is the first warning sign, it might look pretty but it is terrible to use and i absolutely can not stand it . It's not that I have anything against touch screens or have trouble using them, ( I have an iphone and have absolutely no problem using that which you would think would be much more complicated to use). The fact that it is touch half the buttons disappear so that you can't really ever tell if anything you have done is finalized or if anything is really going to happen. Who knows if the photo quality is good or not because i cant never make the photo paper settings actually stay on what i selected so the pictures all end up smeared and i waste about 50 dollars of ink on each 4X6 printed. Initial set up may be easy but you will never stop setting up this paper weight equivalent of a printer because it never recognizes that anything is connected so it calls for its CD every time anything has to be done. I can't say enough bad things about this printer and HIGHLY recommend you save your money and sanity and purchase something more straight forward. I have always previously owned HPs and never had ANY problem with them at all (and never been so tempted to go at them with a hammer). If I was present for the purchase of our new printer we would have stayed with an HP and I advise anyone with any sanity to do so as well.

Pros: Photo quality is amazing. The colors and clarity exceed any other print option I have ever used. Wireless was easy to set up and regular memo and letter printing is excellent.
Cons: Like others, I assumed that wireless meant that you could access all of the print features wirelessly but this isnt the case. However, wireless printing of documents has been easy.

Summary: I needed a multifunction for a home office setting and opted for the wirelss and photo print features as a bonus. I also wanted a more compact unit. I'm more than pleased -- I was prepared for a difficult couple of hours to set it up but wireless and all other aspects of the set up was easy and flawless. B&W letter printing is laser quality fast and the photo quality (I'm using some leftover Kodak paper, not even Epson), is vivid. I did not shop around a lot and I'm comparing the photo quality to a 4 year old HP I liked very much, but performance exceeded all my expectations for all of the functions.
