Summary: I find the editor's review hard to understand having used this unit for over a month now. It installed itself on my network with no intervention and has worked without a glitch. It easily accomodated Windows 2000,XP, and Vista. I haven't had a single paper jam through multi reams even though our previous HP units used to have a jam at least every other day. We're running through our second or third ink cartridges and that's still lower cost than our older HP units.
Feb. 1st and I still love it! The price has gone well above what I paid but definitely worth it.
It doesn't like to copy from thick hardcover books and scans need to be initiated from a computer so that the file destination is clear. The trays do appear to be flimsy but so what! They do the trick well and we're not about to sit on them. The paper tray is certainly different from the HP style but I found that it works well if you just forget your HP habits. It took me a while to realize I was trying to treat it like my HP's from the last 20 years. This was really a step out of line for us and I'm glad we took it thnks to a young technno savvy sales type.
Touch screens or buttons work the same to me, but this unit with it's stand alone network capability brings the home office to a different level for me at this price point.

I finally managed to get the auto duplexer and it does automatic 2 sided printing like a charm.
To answer kbchicago, the document quality is just fine to my untrained eye and it is also adjustable. I've seen comments that the black is a bit on the charcoal side but it hasn't caused us any grief. It doesn't use any greater volume of ink than any other jet as far as I can tell. Finally. the scanner works on our wireless network just like the printer although you obviously have to physically go to the machine to put the document(s) in. I extensively use the feeder for legal size pages which I always had to do in pieces before.11 out of 12 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Let me start by saying I own a LOT of tech gear and am usually an early adopter, but this is the only CNET review I've ever bothered to write despite everything I could write about. That ought to tell you something about this printer.
Despite being popular for years, I have avoided owning an all-in-one machine. I was afraid that if my scanner broke then my printer would be useless and vice versa. All-in-ones have come a long way, though. I figured it was finally safe to take the plunge.
I had some specific requirements when it came to choosing a printer. It had to be wifi compatible. It had to have excellent photo print capabilities. Lastly (and not quite as important), having a scanner would be a major perk. Despite those seemingly simple requirements, there are really only a few printers on the market that fit the bill that I found- the Epson Artisan series and Canon MP980. I decided the MP980 was too bulky and the Artisan 700 didn't have the feeder for the scanner or as high of scanning capabilities. I'm glad I got the Artisan 800.
Installation was admittedly tricky, but I'm fairly familiar with hardware so I worked my way through it. I ended up not really following the instructions. One of the on-screen prompts was blatantly wrong (at least for me) so I finished it on my own. It took a while, but everything works flawlessly - printing, scanning, and even accessing the card readers on the front of the printer via the wireless network.
The scanner is pretty responsive. I haven't challenged it too much yet, but I'll be loading a lot of my older photos to sync with my current digital collection. This scanner is proving to be more invaluable than I realized. As for quality, it has a higher optical resolution than most other all-in-ones. That's a big deal for people who are not willing to sacrifice.
As for printing, I've been fairly impressed so far. I'm really picky about color accuracy from screen to paper so I did have to burn through a few sheets of photo paper to get the results I wanted. I would think this is to be expected with all printers, though. I like that you can load both plain paper and photo paper in at once and switch between the trays on the fly. It would bother me if I had to manually switch all the time so that's a big deal for me. I also like the cd printing function. I have yet to use it, but I appreciate that its there. I already had a personal B&W laser printer that I've been using, but this new Artisan 800 might replace it completely.
As for copying, the first document seemed to take quite a while. I'm not exactly sure why. All subsequent copies have been way faster, though. Most of what I'll be copying will be receipts or text documents so I'm not particularly concerned with color rendition. As such, I was mostly copying B&W and can't comment on color copies.
A lot of people seem to complain about the paper tray. I admit that it does feel flimsy, but it spends 99.9% of its time completely inserted inside the printer so it would be really hard to break. Maybe it would get damaged in an office setting where employees are slamming things around, but for home use I don't foresee any problems. And let's be honest, this is a photo printer at heart. It's built for home use. Some people have also complained about the guides on the paper tray being confusing. I don't see where they get that. Even if it is troublesome, though, you pretty much just set it once and forget about it for the rest of the time you own the printer.
Certainly the most difficult part for me was the installation. I'm not going to fault the printer, though. It's complicated equipment. It does a lot of things. There are plenty of things to potentially go wrong. If I were hooking it up via USB I expect I would not have had any trouble. However, wifi was another matter. Also, my wifi router is under the couch so I couldn't plug the printer straight into it to set it up as the manual suggests. It did take me 2 tries, but I finally got it. For what it's worth, I never needed to call tech support. It might be a good idea to borrow a techie friend to install it for you, though.
I hate to knock the wifi, though, since its one of the printer's best features. Virtually anything that this printer can do can be done wirelessly. It's completely transparent to the user. Even the card slots on the front of the printer can be accessed wirelessly as network drives. Plus you can punch the IP address into the web browser of your choice and you have a full-fledged web configuration interface. Pros: I print a lot of photos so this printer instantly jumped out at me because of its ultra high def photo printing capability. Also, the wireless was easy to set up and works perfectly. The interface is intuitive and it all looks so good.
Cons: at $300 this isn't a cheap printer. Also, the paper tray seems a little flimsy. Black ink goes pretty quick (luckily they give you two black cartridges). It takes up a lot of desk space as well.

Overall fit and finish on the drivers and trays could be better, like the reviewer said. I think the review was a bit harsh though -- this printer seems like the biggest bang for the buck if you're willing to live with it's minor flaws - no product is ever perfect. I would only recommend it for home use, not for anything too heavy duty. Scanner and print quality are out of this world. Print speed is pretty amazing. Driver issues can be worked through -- the online help isn't bad, and the errors I got installing on Vista x64 seemed to be mostly ignorable (just a few things I'd never use anyway didn't work). Scan to PDF or text software is pretty good. Upgraded my PC to Windows 7 beta and everything still works (unsupported of course). The online help specifically states that you can't use the scan to PC functions from the printer unless the printer is connected via PC. While this is annoying, you can still scan over the network, as long as you start the process from the PC. Otherwise, use USB to connect to the machine you'll do your scanning. Otherwise, using the printer from the built in controls is completely possible -- for the first few days, I did all of my printing from memory cards and didn't have to turn my PC on. I did have to follow their instructions to be able to print wirelessly, but it was easy. The software should have done it for me, but it wasn't hard in the end -- a novice user could easily do it, ametuers with a little help from the directions.
Again, while I'm disappointed that the software wasn't perfect, I think I'll be very happy to own this printer for a while to come, as it seems like a great printer, great scanner, great all-in-one, which is really what I was looking for. Maybe if Epson is paying attention, they'll release better software for it.
If you just want to plug it in and have everything work, go with another model (though I'm not sure which one). But if you can spend 30 minutes getting all the kinks worked out, and your primary concern is print quality and speed, great photo prints, plus a great all-in-one, I'm not convinces you can do a whole lot better than $229.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: We bought this all-in-one printer last week and had a great experience so far: printing pictures directly from the printer is super easy, just insert your memory card (Flash card in our case) or USB and the pictures appear on the screen. Select the one to print and the format, quality etc, et voila! In 10 seconds, you have a high-quality (at least lab-matching) 4x6 print (we used Epson Premium Glossy paper). Colors were vivid and matched the colors on the computer screen.
We next connected the printer to our 3 laptops (one Mac and 2 PCs) through a wireless network fololowing the instructions. Initial configuration was made using a PC, the Mac and the other PC were added subsequently. Installation of the software takes 30 minutes, but we did not have any problem overall (slightly more complex on the Mac but the guidance is very helpful). Wireless network allows not only to print (on paper or on printable CD/DVD ) but also to scan from the computer , which is very useful.
Built in the printer are numerous gadgets like restauring old pictures' colors or converting any picture into a drawing book page. I tried this option with watercolor paper and it worked perfectly, outlining lightly the shapes of the picture without overdiffusion of the ink. Printing CD/DVD covers is also super easy from the computer using the software provided.
We did not experienced the major issue mentioned on the CNET review: no software glitch at all. Finally, It is true that the trays look fragile, but for the price the Epson Artisan 800 delivers way more than we expected.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Worst Purchase Ever

Pros: Looks Pretty , provides bragging rights because "wow your printer has a touch screen".
Cons: The fact it has a touch screen, impossibly difficult to even perform the simplest of tasks, NEVER actually changes settings to what you select , wastes insane amounts of overpriced ink because of this the list is endless.

The touch screen is the first warning sign, it might look pretty but it is terrible to use and i absolutely can not stand it . It's not that I have anything against touch screens or have trouble using them, ( I have an iphone and have absolutely no problem using that which you would think would be much more complicated to use). The fact that it is touch half the buttons disappear so that you can't really ever tell if anything you have done is finalized or if anything is really going to happen. Who knows if the photo quality is good or not because i cant never make the photo paper settings actually stay on what i selected so the pictures all end up smeared and i waste about 50 dollars of ink on each 4X6 printed. Initial set up may be easy but you will never stop setting up this paper weight equivalent of a printer because it never recognizes that anything is connected so it calls for its CD every time anything has to be done. I can't say enough bad things about this printer and HIGHLY recommend you save your money and sanity and purchase something more straight forward. I have always previously owned HPs and never had ANY problem with them at all (and never been so tempted to go at them with a hammer). If I was present for the purchase of our new printer we would have stayed with an HP and I advise anyone with any sanity to do so as well.

REALLY disappointed!

Pros: When it worked it worked great..when it worked.
Cons: Unbelievably slow and only worked consistently for less than 6 months. The paper try is really flimsy and it is prone to software glitches and connectivity problems, not to mention paper jams.

If you turn off the auto clean, you will have to go though cleaning before you print anything, even just black and white. The cleaning process reduces the ink quantity by about 1/10. So, clean the heads 10 times and its time to pony up more $ to the Epson ink gods!

Pros: This printer looks sharp on my desk. It prints well enough for my needs. I would rate the photo quality as excellent; however...
Cons: I HATE when this printer refuses to print because it thinks 1 ink cartridge is empty. The ink is expensive and I would rather print in black and white than run out and buy more ink.
