Summary: My previous printer was an Epson CX8400. It had most of the same features as this printer but it went through ink like nothing. It also broke with light use after 3 years. I was looking to replace it and the last thing I wanted was another Epson. But then I saw this on sale and compared its features to comparably priced printers. I then looked at the reviews with regards to the ink usage. Everything I saw looked positive and I made the dive.
I must say I'm very happy with my purchase, and my opinion of Epson has changed. This is a very professional looking printer. It's on the slightly larger size but it is pretty comprehensive in its features. It is a printer, scanner, copier, and fax. All features are accessible on the control panel, with a nice color LCD. The buttons are clearly labelled and self-explanatory so someone who has never used it could easily figure it out.
Setting up the printer was very easy. I always ignore the CDs that come with the printer as there are always updated versions on the manufacturers website. Setting up the wireless and networking the computer is fast and painless. I've never had a wireless printer before and the ability to print from any computer is pretty useful. It holds a large tray of paper at 250 sheets, which is great as you do not have to constantly refill, or stare at paper hanging out from your printer.
As for the printing itself. The speed is very good. It is advertised as the fastest inkjet printer, though that was upon release and new printers come out constantly. All I know is that it is indeed very fast. This is confirmed with everything except the fax which I have no tested. Copying, scanning, and printing is a breeze. All these featured are amplified by the fact that the Epson Workforce 645 is double sided capable. Regardless if you're faxing, or printing, you can select double sided and the printer will flip the pages for you. That is a feature usually reserved for the priciest of printers. I should also note that the included software is easy to use and the package is comprehensive.
The print quality is solid. Epson ink is vibrant and dries instantly. I mostly use my printer for text and the sort. It is excellent in those regards. I don't do much photo printing. I've heard the photo printing on this printer is merely average, so if you're looking primarily for a photo printer you might want to look elsewhere.
Now for the biggest factor in my printer selection, the ink mileage. Everyone knows printers are subsidized through ink that cost more per oz. than just about any other liquid in the world. My previous Epson CX8400 had terrible ink mileage. It would constantly need to reinitialize the cartridge. Every time I turned it on it would just suck up ink. The Workforce 645 doesn't have any of those problems. I'm still on my initial starter cartridges after several months, and it doesn't constantly initialize cartridges whenever you turn on the printer.
I checked on the price of cartridges and a full set of the extra large 127 ink cartridges only cost about $55 if bought from a 3rd party on Amazon. That makes owning this printer a great value.
Why did I only rate this 4 stars and not 5? A few small things. The copier lid is not secured by anything other than the hinge and gravity. It will violently slam down if you lift it up and let go. Take care when opening and closing the cover. This printer is a bit loud. It actually doesn't bother me at all, but I know printer noise bothers a lot of people. The paper tray is a bit annoying to load. The tray like the rest of the machine is completely plastic. I've read reviews where the person said he broke it. I could see this happening, though not if you were taking care.
The biggest reason for 4 stars is the printing on envelopes. You need to take out the printer tray, completely remove all the paper, place envelopes into the tray then reinsert the tray. After you're done printing on envelopes, you need to reload the paper. It's a bit of a hassle. For that reason I don't use this printer to do envelope printing. People who do a lot of envelope printing should be aware of the issue as this printer is probably not for them.

Summary: After doing a great deal of research and reading hundreds of reviews I chose this printer because of the excellent reviews given to the very similar Workforce 635 and 845 models. The 645 had every feature I was looking for including price range. Software installation and wireless setup were easy and fast, everything was up and running in a matter of minutes. After putting it through it's paces I can tell you that it more than lives up to my expectations. Paper handling, print quality and speed are excellent and double sided printing works flawlessly and is a big plus. Copying or faxing using the document feeder is quick and easy and the ability to fax from the PC using the Epson fax utility is another big plus. Scanned photos look just like the originals which was not always the case with other scanners I have owned or used. So far I am very pleased with the quality and functionality of the 645 and would not hesitate to recommend it to friends.

Not a match for MAC OS-X Lion
by phxpaul61 on March 29, 2012
Pros: I am unable to write an pros about this printer as I was unable to complete the setup
Cons: I ran the set up disk and could not get a successful install. I ran the uninstall, and then tried with the web version. Same result. Unable to create print queue. Software update does not have any updates that help. I returned the printer to Sams Club

Summary: I bought this printer on sale for $69, regular price was $149. I've only had it a couple of days but so far I'm pretty thrilled with the quality and features.
Setup took close to an hour. Setup hung when downloading firmware update (you need to use the 'back' button to ensure LCD is clear) and when it came time to print a test page it wanted to send a fax - again, use the back button to clear the screen. I followed their instructions to the letter, except I downloaded the drivers and utilities direct from the Epson website. After completing the wired setup it kind of leaves you in the dark about the wireless setup, but I muddled through and it became pretty straightforward. My Iphone had no problem finding the printer and my laptop ditto after I loaded the Epson software there too.
The printer feels more substantial than Epson's cheaper models and I think for my use it will stand up fine. Menus are reasonably easy to figure out. Print quality seems good - still not 100% sure about colour accuracy but all pages are crisp and easy to read. Haven't tried the duplexer or printing from memory cards or USB stick yet but these are also handy features to have.
This model seemed like the lesser of a thousand evils; I tried to pick one that was reasonably reliable for $150 or less and wouldn't break the bank buying ink. Time will have to tell on that one, too early yet. My last printer was an HP and it's been great but I've had bad experiences with other HP printers and since their support is useless I wouldn't go there again. I don't like that it will not print when one cartridge is empty (not even in B&W so I've read) and apparently it's a royal pain to print envelopes but I might do 1 in a year so it's not high on my priority list.
I'll update on ink consumption and reliability after I've owned it a while. -
Great value with high end features.
by bcompaine on November 20, 2012
Pros: -Does most of what high end devices do
-Prints, faxes, scans and copies two sided
-Decent volume from black ink cartridge
-Modest footprint
-Easy to use control panel
-All at an impressive price pointCons: -Draft print quality not as usable as other ink jets I've used
-No manual feed slot
-Printing envelops a bit cumbersomeSummary: I've been using the WorkForce 645 for about two months and I have not been disappointed. I bought it for my home office to replace an 18 year old ...
Summary: I've been using the WorkForce 645 for about two months and I have not been disappointed. I bought it for my home office to replace an 18 year old bulky HP Laserjet 4 (which still worked perfectly) plus a large desktop copier. I'm just overwhelmed at the features provided at this price (original $149 list but available for considerably less at this writing). There are two areas I cannot comment on. One is printing high quality photographs. That's not important to me, so check out the comments of others in this regard. The other is how it will hold up over time. Bottom line: For now I'm a big fan.
