Epson WorkForce 845 All-in-One Printer price range: $109.95 - $199.99

The good: The Epson WorkForce 845 excels in print speeds and output quality, with hardware working overtime in autoduplexing, wireless networking, and mobile printing support by way of Epson's suite of Connect mobile printing services.
The bad: Photo print speeds are slightly lower than for the average inkjet, and the packaging doesn't include the USB and Ethernet cables required for a tethered connection.
The bottom line: Though it's slightly more expensive than competing inkjet workhorses, we recommend the Epson WorkForce 845 for its refined design and Epson's Connect cloud-printing portfolio.
The Epson WorkForce 845 is the company's latest flagship all-in-one printer for medium to large offices that need a multifunction device for printing a high volume of documents, photos, and presentations. The 845 serves up plenty of features to assist in the workload--in addition to Epson's standard array of print, copy, scan, and fax functions, this device bundles in triple connectivity options by way of Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and wired networking, as well as double-sided printing, an automatic document feeder for hands-free scans, and a 7.8-inch touch-panel display with intuitive navigation.
The 845 also is stocked with Epson's newest Connect portfolio of mobile printing features, which not only work in conjunction with Google and Apple's cloud printing services, but also include a free iPhone app and Android app as well as the ability to e-mail print jobs to the 845 directly from any device connected to the Web. With all these impressive features in an attractive package, you shouldn't hesitate to pick up the WorkForce 845 for your high-output printing needs.
Design and features
We wouldn't call the WorkForce 845 compact by any means, but we're still impressed that Epson was able to fit all its extra hardware into a manageable 17.6x14.5x11.8-inch package. The whole device with ink and trays installed also weighs a relatively light 22 pounds, so moving it around the office won't hurt too much.
Comparatively, the HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus carries many of the same features but weighs 6 pounds more. Of course, that number will certainly go up once you fill the two size-adjustable paper trays that sit at the bottom of the device and can hold a combined capacity of up to 500 pages of standard paper.
The controls sit inside a 13-inch-wide panel that houses the 7.8-inch touch-screen display with a 3.5-inch color LCD inside that helps you navigate through the onscreen menus. Home, Page Forward, Page Back, and Menu navigation buttons are just a sample of the myriad controls available on the machine, and Epson conveniently blacks out the buttons that aren't relevant to the process you're working through, effectively eliminating button clutter and confusion.
The rest of the panel holds two media card slots on the front and a PictBridge-compatible USB port down below for direct printing from your digital camera, although we recommend using Epson's Easy Photo Print software included in the box if you plan to do any image editing. You also get Epson's CreativeZone apps, a scanner app, and the driver disc in the box for managing your photo albums and turning them into creative projects like greeting cards, calendars, and to-do lists. The drivers are compatible with Mac and Windows, and our Windows 7 machine had no trouble running the drivers connected via USB, without any speed bumps in the installation.
The Wi-Fi setup is equally simple; Epson gives you the option to use either a temporary USB proxy or a direct network setup on the touch panel itself. We assume that most of you will prefer the latter since Epson doesn't include a USB cable in the box. Smart setup on the touch panel is a two-part process: turn on the machine and click Network Setting, then designate your wireless network and enter its password, and that's it. The entire setup from start to finish, with a connection established on our lab network, took us less than 2 minutes.
Connecting through Wi-Fi also means you can take advantage of Epson's host of free mobile printing apps that let you print directly from mobile devices. First, the Epson iPrint application for iOS and Android devices enables you to print Web pages, photos, documents, and anything else on a smartphone directly to the WorkForce 845, though we did notice some of our photos got inadvertently cropped from time to time. We wouldn't recommend printing important images like business presentations this way; it's more appropriate for quick outputs of spreadsheets and to-do lists.
Epson also launched its Connect Email Print app at the same time it announced the 845. Connect Email Print lets you send a print job directly to a unique e-mail address assigned to every WorkForce 845 printer. This means you can attach anything to an e-mail and send it to the printer's e-mail address, and the print job will be waiting for you in the output tray when you arrive home. Anyone can use the e-mail address, and we can imagine it could come in handy for remote workers hoping to share information with the home office.
The WorkForce 845 isn't just a printer, either. The copy and scan functions will prove useful in offices where employees can take advantage of the A4 scanner bay's 1,200x2,400 dots-per-inch (DPI) resolution, and the memory card reader lets anyone save and print documents with a recorded digital history that lives inside the printer's memory. Epson also provides a 30-page autodocument feeder (ADF) for hands-free scanning of document stacks. Our only complaint here is that the ADF doesn't resize to fit small 4x6-inch photo paper, so photographers looking for a sidekick in the digital darkroom may find their needs met better elsewhere.
The Epson WorkForce 845 is powered internally by four separate ink cartridges (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) that save you money by making it so you don't have to replace a tricolor ink tank. We did the math based on Epson's high-capacity ink cartridges that offer more ink capacity at a discounted price, and a page of color ink works out to 7.2 cents per page, while a high-capacity black cartridge comes to approximately 3 cents per page. Both costs are average for an inkjet printer at this price.
Performance
Since the WorkForce 840 uses the same print engine as the WorkForce 840, we're not surprised that both yielded similarly impressive results. The 845 achieved 12.52 pages per minute (ppm) in our all-black text speed test, which was similar to the Epson WorkForce 520's score. The WorkForce 845 also performed well in our color graphics and slide deck speed tests, printing 4.55ppm and 6.73ppm to top the competition. Unfortunately, the photo test tarnished its otherwise chart-topping scores, registering 0.89ppm and sending it to the bottom of the pack behind competing models.
(Longer bars indicate better performance)
| Black text (PPM) | Color graphics (PPM) | Photo (PPM) | Presentation (PPM) |
We're more than satisfied by a side-by-side analysis of the Epson WorkForce 845's output quality and that of the HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus. The WorkForce 845's closest competitor in terms of price and features, the 8500A Plus produces text prints that can't compete with the WorkForce 845's crisp text and vivid colors, even at smaller fonts where we would dare to compare its line work to a laser printer. Finally, quiet offices will certainly benefit from the 845's whisper-quiet operation noises, which are easily drowned out by clicking keyboards and soft conversation. Compared with irritatingly loud devices that make their scanning, spooling, and printing processes well-known, the WorkForce 845 is satisfying in its stealthy operation.
Service and support
Epson backs the Epson WorkForce 840 with a limited one-year warranty that includes toll-free customer support weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. PT. Further support is available online through a model-specific troubleshooting guide, FAQs, e-mail support, driver updates, and document downloads. You can also purchase exchange/repair coverage at $39.95 for one year or $59.95 for two years.
Conclusion
Though we wouldn't recommend it for hard-core photographers, the Epson WorkForce 845 excels in all manner of printing operations, and has all the extras you need in terms of mobile printing software, as well as double-sided paper conversion and speedy performance. We recommend the WorkForce 845 for offices, home offices, and any other environment that requires a do-it-all output machine.

A light package but Lacks important E-Commerce tools
by BuilderToTheStars on January 23, 2012
Pros: Larger than other screens, small footprint, light to carry, quick printing, decent quality prints, prints E-mails from Android, Iphone, Blackberry, print from SD Card, BLAZING FAST WIFI, no giant transformer on the power line, fold-away touch screen.
Cons: Per Espon: Doesn't scan to web-based E-mails such as Gmail only to MAPI-based e-mails such as Outlook -must scan to PC first. Auto Document feeder and paper trays seem flimsy. Output tray seems flimsy. This printer's engine is VERY LOUD.

Summary: I run a contracting firm in Las Vegas, so I'm usually on the go. Web based plans, submittal packages, and electronic communication slow me down unless I have a competent All-In-One on my desk, and I've had a long string of them since Y2K. This will be my third Wi-Fi enabled machine. I know them well and tend to be critical, but can overlook design flaws IF the machine can help minimize my office time. This is the wrong machine for someone like me.
After watching CNET review video, I was excited to find that Office Max had this printer on weekly ad for $139.00. I went immediately and bought it. Just as described, it is fast, light, compact and efficient. At a price.
It feels like in order to save weight, the product designers cut corners on moving parts which should feel solid, such as the auto document feeder, the paper trays, and the output tray. All of which feel flimsy enough to break after a few months on my desk. Looks pretty but feels shabby. But I can live with that if it performs well.
A full set-up meant I needed to download 3 firmware updates to make it do things (like print from my phone) which it was advertised to do, but did not ship with the software. But I could live with that hour wasted.
I cannot get it to scan to my 64-bit enabled Windows 7 PC. AT ALL. (My other 2 PCs running 32-bit Windows 7 accepted scans fine). I just don't have another hour to contact Tech support to figure this one out. I could live with it if it would scan to my Gmail account.
BUT IT DOES NOT SCAN TO INTERNET-BASED E-MAIL. I learned that only after spending another hour on Epson's FAQ website looking for answers. It is advertised to scan to E-mail. But in order to do that, it must first scan to your PC and THEN start up your E-mail software in lieu of a real scan-to-Email setup which sends from the machine directly to your web-based E-mail address. After having two HP 8500's do that flawlessly, I was shocked that this machine will not. So lastly, and most importantly, I consider the ability for the machine to scan directly to my web-based E-mail (Gmail, Yahoo, etc) a necessity.
I don't know if the print cartridges will last very long, they are very tiny. 3 color cartridges about the size of a matchbox and the black one is double that. But I understand that they use alcohol-based inks which might be the reason for the size?
Additionally, it is the loudest All-in-one I've ever owned. How loud? Make them run it for you in the store first.
And being that I work in the desert, I'm concerned that the dust will somehow mess up the feeding mechanisms in the paper trays since they are open (big slots on the front).
Although I was not very happy with the WIFI speed on my previous HP 8500, I will probably go get the new HP 8600 Premium now because I know from previous experience that it will work properly out of the box with my PC and Scan to my Gmail account and be quiet while doing it. Yes it will cost me $300.00 but I've been hearing from my peers that it's quiet, fast, and works well.
I hope this helps someone out there!7 out of 9 users found this user opinion helpful.

Epson 845 is a dream
by fidalgodan on November 2, 2011
Pros: QUIET! No noise during idle time. Print speed, double sided printing, print quality and paper capacity all great.
Cons: Paper shelf for printed work is a bit flimsy but not unusual. Requires computer/printer cable to be installed. Cables are not supplied with purchase of printer.

Summary: I purchased this after checking reviews on CNET and other sites and use all the functions of the WorkForce 845 daily in my home office. I just moved from a Dell 1600 Laser printer because of the noise created by the fan. I used an Epson Stylus for my color printing needs.
I was a little concerned about returning to an inkjet. Quiet operation, noiseless idle time, print speed and a host of other features including double-sided printing are great. Software includes
ABYY Fine Reader software is included for scanning, editing and creating multiple types of documents. I have not spent a lot of time with this yet but plan to.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Best printer I have ever had.
by Unknown_0 on November 1, 2011
Pros: -SPEED!!! Especially loading time when the printer is turned on. I've seen printers (HP), that take forever to turn on! This starts up fast.
-EASY SETUP. I saw the first review posted buy a user saying it was hard to setup. Its probably because he/she isCons: Setting up the Email address was easy, once i found out how.
Nowhere is it made clear you have to go to www.epson.com/connect, and download the firmware update in order to give your printer its own email address.Summary: Great Printer. Easy to setup and use.

What a BEAUTY!!!
by Bullshifter on January 22, 2012
Pros: So easy to set up, Worked perfectly from the moment the power went on, excellent customer service by phone, excellent documentation on website, handy firmware upgrade tool, brilliant output quality, plenty of settings to fiddle with.
Cons: None so far, even the FAX worked immediately.

Summary: I am over the moon with this machine. Everything was easy, easy, EASY - I went for a wireless network printer config direct from the printer, and in ten minutes flat I was printing from two machines without a single cable being used. PLUS, it becomes a network drive, so way cool functionality.
The quality is fantastic - excellent right down to 2 point. The colour is great (although a bit yellow - so I have some work to do with the gamut; big deal... )
Eventually plugged the FAX in for completeness - boom: perfect.
Light, small, cheap, powerful.
If there was a complaint it would be that it is so cool I can't stop fiddling around with it.
100% recommend!!2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Nice print quality. Large capacity ink cartridges.
by jimafasfasfafa on December 19, 2011
Pros: Dual trays, quality printing, large capacity ink cartridges, easy to use.
Cons: Have to hold the on/off button to turn it on.
Have to press on/off button twice if on standby to "wake up" then turn off.
Occasionally pulls doubles.Summary: I am very critical and hard to please and I am happy with this printer. Has a few things that irritate but overall a very nice printer.

Really innovative features in a business-minded printer
by adg016 on November 8, 2011
Pros: Auto color duplexing
Emailing documents for auto print when out of office
Fast WPS Wi-Fi setup
Very high quality
Quiet
High capacityCons: Not many, but I've only had it for a week. It will lightly bend a corner if you use super heavy weight premium Epson paper...but this was on autoduplexing which isn't recommended for that paper anyhow.

Summary: You know, I came here and saw no major printer that had really great user reviews. My conclusion: everyone hates printers in some way. This printer really has a ton of power for a small office, and we've already had graphic designers send print jobs directly to their printer from 100 miles away with the great email feature. I'm waiting to find something that aggravates me, like ink running out too soon...the printer breaking...I dunno...right now we love it, and thought we'd let people know that if you're running a small business AND TAKE THE TIME TO LEARN HOW TO USE THE PRINTER, it is a very, very good device.

Summary: Never had a printer fail for me before right out of the box. Got through setup through installing the ink cartridges and then the display just kept flashing. None of the controls were recognized. Nothing in the instructions covered this situation. Called Epson customer support, no 800 number. After minimal trouble shooting like powering printer off an back on, checking for any obstructions, unplugging it, all of which I had already done they said I would have to send it back and they would send a replacement. They would have to put a hold on my credit card to assure that I returned the defective machine and I would have to take it to a FedEx location. Will be it taking back to where I purchased it and will not be getting another Epson based on this experience and the experience with customer support.

Too many issues and short comings.
by Gl47 on March 26, 2012
Pros: Cheap, Decent color matching, 2 paper trays.
Cons: See Description below, but basically Poor MAC Support and drivers, Problematic paper and ADF Feeds, Slow Printing and much worse text on plain paper then other brands. Poor envelope feeding.

Summary: Firstly, this is the most complex and frustrating driver and software driver installation I have ever attempted. Over three hours with Second Level Epson tech support and it still does not work right. All together I have spent over 8 hours troubleshooting and fiddling with software and printer and scanner settings but still don't have full functionality.
If most people rate this is a 5-star printer I wonder what were they using before or if someone might be "padding" the reviews?
Here are the Epson Workforce 845 problems / issues I encountered and consider a "Deal-breaker"
1. Workforce 845 seems not able to scan directly from the printer's front panel to OSX 10.7 Lion computer so I have to use The cumbersome Epson Scan software (After you download all the software drivers and patches)
2. Wireless networking set-up screen does not support standard 64 character AES Passwords, but stops at 63! What is with that? It's like someone forgot one space when they programmed the LCD interface. So if your router does not have push button set-up feature you may have trouble using enterprise grade encryption.
3. Abby Fine Print OCR software crashed when launched under Lion, and it looks like I have to have to buy the full version or somehow get a ser# to get the update that works with Lion. Unless you buy or have an OCR package like Acrobat Pro, that supports the Epson and can get the scanner driver to work, I would not expect to produce any OCR'ed PDFs.
4. Can't get it to print from Tray #2. There seems to be no option in the printer dialog box, and turning on the "Automatic Cassette Switching" option in the printer and scanner properties section does not enable use of Tray #2.
5. Envelope printing is poorly supported, Envelopes don't feed reliably, sometimes it fees two envelopes at once, and unless you set the distance exactly the won't feed at all. Epson Support says not to load more then 10 envelopes, but even then its a pain to get them to feed, when I finally get them to feed the text is often wavy or broken.
6. Automatic Document feeder also fails to feed pages, and often jams in duplex mode. If I scan more then 5 or 10 pages, the scanned and ejected pages often get sucked back into Document feeder causing the ADF to Jam. I tested the same display model in a local store with the same pages and it seemed to feed ok, so I suspect I may have a problematic copy.
7. Automatic document scanner/feeder won't scan pages shorter then standard letter size. And while The automatic document feeder while much better then the Duplex HP 8500 Plus, can't handle much other then fresh printer paper. Something thicker like a bank statement or previously folded paper that would go through a cheap fax machine with no problem typically jams the 845.
8. Print heads drop or leak big, colored ink smudges on about 20% of printed pages and envelopes.
9. Does not support legal sized scans.
10. Overall construction seems cheap, paper trays are flimsy and hard to load and adjust, and when the trays forcefully snap into place paper and envelopes can get thrown past the optiomal pick-up point and not feed.
11. Noisy and slow printing, 1.5PPM to 5PPM for an letter sized page with text is the best I can get depending on "High Quality, Fine, Economy or Fast Draft modes. Fast and Draft modes are pretty poor. Landscape printing is even more painfully slow.
12. The whole bulky ink-tank assembly moves with the print heads with such force my whole (heavy) desk moves and rattles as it prints. Placing the printer on the floor eliminates this annoying issue but makes it difficult to use.
13. Workforce 845 Print yield per cartridge is only about 1/4 (385 black text pages as per Epson site) of competing printers from other manufacturers, so its going to cost a lot more to operate.
14. Output tray is small so it will hold only a portion of one of the 250 sheet feeders. There is no backstop on the output tray so pages also end up loosely stacked or on the floor, requiring me to re-stack and align the pages.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great document and photo printing.
by vinniminni on March 16, 2012
Pros: Works well and relatively fast, good print quality. Two paper bays.
Cons: Not that I have had this problem but I have heard the Durabrite inks (pigment based inks) dries too fast causing printer head clogs. As always the inks seems like a rip off when you see the refill methods.
Summary: This is a great printer for business and heavy/advanced users.

Summary: I just replaced my HP printer with the Epson Workforce 845. I got tired of the HP's slow speed and even slower pdf conversion. I scan a lot of documents and do pdf conversions to email and the 845 is the most bang for the buck in this category. I have all my computers on the home network (4) attached to the printer by wifi. The install was seamless with the Epson software provided. I just got the printer so have not tried all the functions yet. But so far so good. I bought this printer based on the CNET review and as usual they didn't disappoint.
