The good: The HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus has an ample feature set that includes AirPrint and ePrint functionality as well as print, scan, copy, and fax functions, automatic duplexing, and an autodocument feeder.
The bad: The printer is big, slow to power on and pricier than competing models, and a single 250-sheet input tray reduces its appeal for busy offices.
The bottom line: The HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus inkjet all-in-one offers the convenience of Web connectivity, but both business and home users will prefer the Epson WorkForce 840's reduced footprint and versatility.

Great Product No Complaints and No Crashes
by dlperth on October 6, 2011
Pros: Super High Ink capacity, 1200 pages with one cartridge, truly amazing
Prints large documents very fast
Scans using the document feeder at a reasonable rate
The e-print functionality is brilliant

First one I had broke it the first month
by lilac904 on September 15, 2011
Pros: The second seems to now work fine.
Cons: HP support is horrible to work with. But my main problem I have found out is with all HP printer, you can print with black ink only. You can turn on black ink only and this will cut down on the use of your color ink but you can never stop it all togethe

Summary: So I hooked this guy up like I was told and installed the minimum amount of software I needed from the CD and everything has been working great! I have a home wireless network which is used by 4 other machines. I have never once connected this printer to a computer via USB, everything I am about to tell you was done wirelessly, even the setup. Once I finished with the setup and messing around with a few of the software features on the computer (like enabling eprint and scan to computer) I tested it out. The coolest thing about this printer is that I assigned it an email, and so I can forward any email I receive to my printer email and the document, including photo attachments will be printed out! I tried this from my home computer, school computer, and phone....worked every time.
The ink itself is also pretty good. I was told it lasts longer than regular cartridges that use a standard dye...so compared to my last HP, I should get 3-4 times the amount of pages per buck I spend on ink.
The scan feature rocks...I can touch the scan button, which then prompts me to select the computer I want to scan too (it gives me the option to scan to any comuter that is on and connected to my home network...granted the HP software needs to also be installed on the destination computer for it to be recognized by the printer. To print from the computer though you do not need the HP software, just the driver and network connection.) This just sent a scan strait to my documents!
The feed tray works great, super easy to copy a bunch of pages at once, and the double sided printing also works like a charm!
I do however have the 8500a (a910a) model, which looks the same and has the same features as what was described by other reviews as well as cnet, but maybe that makes a difference. I haven't run into any problems at all.
The cost of the printer was 129.00 with recycling a printer at Off!ceMax.
I did just print a photo though...In windows photo viewer the print menu didn't have what I wanted until I went through all the preferences and advanced settings. I set the dpi as high as it would go and printed on glossy photo paper. Like another review said...it looked terrible! Actually it looks really cool, but doesn't look like the crisp image I sent to the printer. It instead looks like a color saturated water-color painting. This is because the printer uses pigment ink, not dye, so you need to use photo paper that takes pigment ink! If you have that, you should be fine!
I seriously love this printer and have had no problems with it....maybe try to get the version (A910a) -
I bought this 3 months ago, and I'm a 911 family member
by scleere1 on August 28, 2011
Pros: Good scanning, Like the wireless feature.
Cons: It eats up the ink even using the xl mods and very slow to start the head cleaning feature sucks because, each time you turn the darn thing on it auto cleans the print head wasting even more precous ink . After printing 8 pages in the cleaning feature kick

Printer has issues

Summary: i really wanted to like this printer...I had it for about 5 months and used it maybe 200 copies (the very most) and the printheads went bad. After 2 hrs of tech support and them taking over my laptop to trouble shoot I had to reformat my laptop and re-install all the software (all day job) then a month later the new printheads went bad again. AGAIN...2 hrs of trouble shooting the finally decided to replace the printer and guess what, I have to wait almost 10 days to get the replacement. They gave me the option for over-night shipping for $35.00, I ask if the would upgrade to at least 2 days shipping because of all the trouble i had with trouble shooting and crashed laptop? Sorry we cannot do that. RIGHT... I will buy a cannon or Brothers printer next...This is just unfair in so many way. BEWARE of this printer and HP as far as that goes.

Summary: Paper feed is a nightmare. I bought a brand new machine and it worked for a couple of days then the problems started with the paper feed. Shredding paper up as it was pulled from the tray. Okay, maybe a monday morning machine, contacted HP and got a new replacement machine. (customer service is good) The replacement machine didn't even print 1 paper before the same problem occurred.
I then bought a brother MFC5890CN...that looks like crap but works like a charm.
Do NOT buy the HP 8500, don't think you won't have these problems! -
Crazy slow, calibrates constantly
by lemurlaw on June 12, 2011
Pros: Allows wireless printing
Cons: It is constantly calibrating for no apparent reason, which stops the presses. When an ink cartridge goes out, say yellow, the entire thing stops working. So if it's Sunday night, stores are closed, and you have a presentation due tomorrow, you can't pri

Awful experience. Tried the previous 8500 and this one.
by DHARMA44 on June 8, 2011
Pros: Pretty to look at.
Cons: Paper jams. Auto Feeder mis feeds if docs are greater than 5. Scans are huge pdf files or very few pages, any adjustment makes them illegible and the misfeeds, so u have to re run and re run. Run out of one color ink it will not work on just black ink--a

Summary: Bad service. Bad machine. I can never know if it will print or not. Definitely not a home business or small business machine. Definitely not a "pro". The actually call it a "Officejet Pro". Tears in my eyes for being so stupid. makes me sad cause I want to like it and I admire the company's other products (except for my HP 460 which is also very unreliable).
PS Cnet really needs to test the multi-feeders with docs like a business might use. My guess is it will mess up feeding more than 10 pages 9 out of 10 times. Also test trying to email a readable pdf of more than two pages. The file is so huge they will not be sendable.
