The good: The Kodak Office Hero 6.1 All-in-One Printer's ink tanks cost less than the competition's, and connection options include Wi-Fi, Google Cloud Print, and Kodak's own Email Print service.
The bad: The device can't print directly on blank discs and the fixed-angle display may inhibit the view for some users.
The bottom line: If you're not in a rush to receive your prints, the Office Pro 6.1 makes a worthwhile sidekick with several cloud printing options, a generous 200-sheet paper input capacity, and a 35-sheet autodocument feeder for hands-free scans on the upgraded 2,400dpi scanner.
The $200 Office Hero 6.1 All-in-One Printer is Kodak's midrange multifunction device that can print, scan, fax, and copy. The Hero line is built for professionals who need diverse printing features, and the Hero 6.1 delivers with connectivity through Wi-Fi, USB, and Ethernet along with Google Cloud Print compatibility. Finally, the Hero printers are the first to include Kodak's Email Print feature that lets you e-mail print jobs from any computer with an Internet connection, similarly to HP ePrint. The Office Hero 6.1 is easy to set up and relatively inexpensive with a useful portfolio of features, making it a no-brainer recommendation for small offices and families shopping for an all-in-one printer.
Design and features
Kodak designed the Hero series to live in a professional office environment, so the Hero 6.1's exterior looks more polished than the ESP line, with a small red strip distinguishing the line between the control panel and the hidden scanner bay. A matte black paint job covers the rest of the chassis and the contours of the angled display contrast nicely with the short autodocument feeder up top that can automate scans or copies with its 35-sheet paper tray.
The autoduplexer that flips pages over for double-sided printing adds a bulky protrusion to the back of the printer, but the extra weight is offset by its economic benefits for offices that print more than the usual amount. Kodak estimates that the Hero 6.1 can handle about 12,000 printed pages a month before it loses steam, which should be more than enough for SMBs and home offices with moderate to large output.
The main paper tray for everyday printing rests at the bottom of the unit and can hold up to 200 sheets of plain paper, or 70 sheets of photo paper. At the $200 range, I expected a dual paper tray supporting two separate media sizes, but the Hero 6.1 has only the single feeder with adjustable plastic paper guides. That said, amateur photographers hunting for the right device to materialize their photos can spend the same and get more photo-friendly features like siloed ink cartridges and a separate photo paper tray from Canon and Hewlett-Packard.
The Office Hero 6.1 uses the same model 10B and 10C cartridges as the ESP series, with a single tank for black ink and a separate five-ink cartridge of pigment color. Kodak claims its ink gives the lowest cost per page in the industry, and my calculations based on the company's XL-capacity cartridges corroborates those claims at just 2.4 cents per black page and 7.2 cents for a page of color. Keep in mind that all five inks are bundled into one cartridge, so you'll need to buy a new one when the first color runs out. That's why it makes more fiscal sense for a photographer wanting to print snapshots to get a printer with five or even six individual ink tanks.
Kodak offers several ways to print to the Hero 6.1 aside from the standard USB connection. You can hook it up to an office network using wired Ethernet or wirelessly via its 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi server.
Headaches usually arrive quickly when it's time to connect a printer to a wireless router, but I'm impressed with Kodak's streamlined handshaking--the printer is set up for the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) computing standard, which reduces the process to a push of a button, if you have a compatible wireless router. It's just as easy to connect without WPS, however, but you'll need to create an ad hoc connection using the USB cable first. Unfortunately, Kodak doesn't provide this cable in the box. The Office Hero is also accessible remotely using the free Kodak Pic Flick App for iOS, Android, and BlackBerry devices. Though the application can't be used for heavy photo editing, you can specify the print quality and canvas size from 2x3 inches all the way up to the standard 8.5x11.
Printing from the cloud is perhaps the most convenient feature of the Hero 6.1, and you get two simple ways to print from any computer with an Internet connection. Google Cloud Print is a free utility that lets multiple users share your printer over the Web with a simple username registration and a compatible device running Google. Google stores your device information on its servers to keep your computer clutter-free and simplifies the process even further by keeping drivers and firmware up-to-date.
The other side of the Hero 6.1's cloud printing is Kodak Email Print. It's designed to release users from the shackles of the print driver by assigning a unique e-mail address to every connected printer, which you can use to send jobs directly from any connected device. When you send an e-mail to the printer, you can choose to either attach a compatible file (Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, PDF, text files, BMP, PNG, GIF, TIFF) for formatted documents or just paste a body of text in plain or HTML form into the body of the e-mail. Kodak provides the e-mail address for your particular device during the wireless setup process, and the virtual instructions walk you through it step by step.
Performance
The Office Hero 6.1 performed at a noticeably slower rate than the average printer in the $200 price bracket. The disparity is usually negligible unless you're printing long documents, but the Kodak's speeds dropped down to a rate that may bottleneck fast-paced offices. For comparison, the Epson WorkForce 520 printed a 10-page plain black-text Word document at 12.51 pages per minute (ppm), more than seven times faster than the Office Hero 6.1's disappointing 4.94ppm.
(Longer bars indicate better performance)
| Presentation speed | Photo speed | Graphics speed | Text speed |
Once the printer eventually spits out your job, you'll be impressed with the resolution quality. Graphic documents and everyday text prints came out looking the best out of all the results from the printers I compared, with acceptable saturation levels that I wouldn't hesitate to use as presentation materials for an office meeting. Scan quality is satisfactory as well thanks to the Hero 6.1's new 2,400dpi scanning bay, and the upgrade resolves the dark compression issues we've seen in previous Kodak models.
Service and support
Kodak supports the Office Hero 6.1 with a one-year warranty for toll-free phone and online-chat tech support available every day. The Kodak Web site provides access to manuals, driver downloads, troubleshooting tips, graphic tutorials, and a list of frequently asked questions.
Conclusion
The Office Hero 6.1 is a smart performer for offices that need universal printing access from stationary computers and mobile devices. With an attractive design that shows improvement over previous models and innovative features like an automatic paper sensor as well as the Kodak Pic Flick app, the Kodak Office Hero 6.1 is worth your dollar.

HP SUCKS, KODAK ROCKS, READ SUMMARY BELOW.
by clusterfluff on April 23, 2012
Pros: great price & print quality, ton of functions, cheap ink that actually brings your cost down, page out times actually faster than faster printers out there since from the time hit to print, this machine prints without everlasting printer preparation.
Cons: Non so far, but I'm affraid with kodak going out of business, we may not be able to enjoy their printers much longer. so stock up on ink
Summary: Have about 6 hp printers currently for my businesses, also had many more in the past.

I can tell you, Hp is a criminal company for deliberately sabotaging their products right after warranty expires and limiting the ink usage in their cartridges, after my last 2 printers failed within a year, I swore to never to buy HP again, EVEEERRRRRRRRR. So I found this cute little machine, it is wonderful, and very affordable, and the print is decent, dont be fooled, the printing maybe slower, but the page comes out faster than most stupid hp printers, print quality is just fine, scanner actually scans to computer without breaking your head, and pretty much very very very very happy and highly recommend it.
What can I say, dump your ugly hp printers that guzzles ink that costs you your kids college funds, give them a huge finger and get yourself a Kodak, there is nothing bad about this printer that I can say or think of.
Good luck -
Owned many HPprinters and so far this Kodak is the best

Pros: Set up was very easy no glitches... the best thing I like is the cost of ink is much lower. Kodak printing is very close to true colors just like their cameras which are the best for true colors not over bright unreal colors. The wireless is flawless
Cons: Haven't seen any yet.
Summary: Have been using the printer for 6 months without any trouble.

Lots of function for the price

Pros: Wireless, cloud printing, super photo printing, prints direct from Picasa Web Albums, fast drying ink, auto duplex, auto document feed, good scanner and fax, long lasting and overall cheaper ink cartridges
Cons: Can be tricky to set up,If you take the printer cartridges out for more than a day the printer head will dry out, Home Printing Center software occasionally crashes

Summary: I bought my 87 year old dad an early Kodak printer and he loved it because of the photo printing quality and fast drying ink, but my sister allowed the printer head to dry out so I searched for a new one. I was amazed at how much functionality was in the newer printers so bought one for each of us. It did take most of a morning to set everything up, but I went through every functionality and found everything as promised. I was able to easily connect two pc's, two laptops and one tablet to the printer wirelessly, allowing the printer to remain in another room out of the way.
I cannot say that it was a quick or easy install, you HAVE to read the instructions and be patient, and if you skip an instruction, you may need to start over. But it is worth the hassle. My dad still likes to print actual photos and I was able to show him how to do this directly from his Picasa Web Albums. The one thing to watch out for are drying out the printer head or cartridges. If a cartridge is removed from the printer for more than 24 hours, it will dry out the printer head and it will need to be replaced. Kodak is good about replacing the head, but it is a pain to have to do it all the same. Just leave the empty cartridge in the printer until it can be replaced.
Although the text quality is fine, I would not do a lot of heavy office work with it. But for our minimal home office needs, it is more than adequate and gives us what we need. BTW, I like the fact that I don't have to remember my model when purchasing replacement cartridges, all of the Kodak printers use the same one. We had an spare set of ink carti4rdges left over for our HP. My husband took them back and received nearly the amount we paid for the Kodak printer (Black Friday prince).
