- The Lexmark Platinum Pro 905 is a fully capable all-in-one business device, but its touch screen might throw a wrench in your workflow. The Smart Solutions widgets add virtual customization to the control panel, but we wish Lexmark had retained a few hard buttons as well. As the top dog in the Lexmark printer family, the Platinum Pro 905 does the job, but the HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless does it better.

Have had it for 30 days and already 2 big problems.
by chowfull on March 20, 2011
Pros: prints fast
Cons: Printhead has failed 2 times. Ink cartridges say 500 copies - I get only 50-75 per black ink cartridge. Cheaper to buy but in the end costs much more!!
Summary: Would never buy again. Will return next week as it doesn't do what I needed it to do and that was save me money on ink.

I would not recommend this printer
by chicago1959 on March 19, 2011
Pros: When it works it is a good printer.
Cons: Document feeder problems, does not sense paper on a regular basis. Wifi connnection to computers is constantly lost, have to restart computer to be able to print. Scan to pdf is a huge file unless you scan at lowest quality. Support is very poor. Cust

Miserable Software - A Business Nightmare
by BusinessOne on March 9, 2011
Pros: Cheap black ink (although the other colors are standard pricing). Even that is misleading as the #1 paper tray prints black using all four colors - customer service admitted this to us after we had major printing and ink issues.
Cons: Bought for the capability to use 2 paper trays - one for envelopes. Customer Svc couldn't fix software issue printing color envelopes from the #1 tray (the #2 tray cannot accept envelopes at all) - said printer will not print color env from MS Word!
Summary: After losing days at a time of staff efforts we took four of them back at a huge money (but more important a huge staff time) loss. Look elsewhere, these ...
Summary: After losing days at a time of staff efforts we took four of them back at a huge money (but more important a huge staff time) loss. Look elsewhere, these are not "business" printers and the software compatiblity issues with something as standard as Microsoft Word was ridiculous.

Pretty Good Printer with great ink costs.
by jabrownie on November 14, 2010
Pros: Ink cost. Speed. Wi-Fi and apps.
Cons: USES COLOR INK TO PRINT BLACK!!! There is an option for print black only in the print properties screen but you have to remember to use it. Some of the scanning software is subpar, but there's an easy fix.
Summary: At under $5 for an extra large black cartridge (570 pages), this is super cheap. Add in that Lexmark will give you one free cartridge after buying your fifth, and ...
Summary: At under $5 for an extra large black cartridge (570 pages), this is super cheap. Add in that Lexmark will give you one free cartridge after buying your fifth, and another when returning the five empties, and you get 7 cartridges for under $25. Or, even better, office max gives you $3 for each returned empty cartridge so your total cost per cartridge is under $2 each. Impossible to beat. Basically the ink cost savings will pay for the printer itself in no time.
One downside is that my color inks have been getting used to print pure black pages. This can be fixed, although you need to remember to do it each time you print. To do this hit print, then when the print options box open, select properties, then in the bottom right, select "Print using black ink only."
Some of the complaints about the scanner software seem to be correct. It will cut off the sides of a scanned document or pull it in really tight. To fix this, go to scan something. It will go through the series of menus. At the last one it will list everything that's being done. There's an option for "original size". Normally it's auto detect. Change this to letter. Then it'll scan the full bed and you won't have the cut off problem.
Overall: Few problems here and there. All the problems I've seen so far have a work-around, but it's somewhat of an annoyance to have to tweek a few settings each time you're doing something. Overall though, it's like I've gotten the printer for free because of the super cheap ink and the savings from that. For the most part, it's a great printer. Good print quality, super fast, lots of options, like scanning to email, or saving scans in lots of formats, etc. Great apps that are all free. Customer support has been very good when I've called them. I don't think there is such a thing as a perfect printer, so I can't complain much about this one. Yes, I'd buy another one if starting all over again.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: This thing is a Joke, if you plan on Scanning/Copying/Faxing anything at all get a different printer. The first one I got didn't work at all, after calling Lexmarks Tech support department (a waste of 2 hours), they mistakenly sent me a Pro 205 to replace my Pro 905, wasted another hour with their support dept. and finally received a proper replacement, which I will admit worked better, though not well.
The autodocument feeder does not recognize a single sheet of paper by its self, you have to open the flatbed and place it in manually. I know it sounds so terrible... however if you place a stack of paper there, it consistently takes multiple sheets, and almost always leaves the last sheet there.
If this is a scan, then you have to start at the beginning and in order to avoid frustration as it will continue to take multiple sheets, you just wind up placing each document individually into the flatbed.
If this is a Copy then you have to go through your document and see what pages didn't copy and redo them and then reorder your copied document.
If this is a Fax then you are going to have to call the person you faxed and see what pages they missed and resend those.
If you try to Scan/Copy/Fax something that is not a perfectly flat, pristine document (ie a mail piece) you better iron it first, any kind of bend or fold and the auto-document feeder will not recognize that it exists...
Unless you want to waste all your time opening and closing the document lid scanning/copying/faxing pages one by one, this printer is not for you.
If you can care less about the scanning/copying/faxing function and want a printer that is slower with poorer quality than its competitors and has terrible support... This is it!
I have spent countless hours being jacked around by their tech support, i cannot return it to the store purchased from as the serial number doesn't match the one on my receipt thanks to their swap. They promise to return calls and never do. They promise a refund but tell me it will take 5 to 7 weeks to process. So now after buying a Lexmark I will be out of a printer for almost 3 months.
I know its Shiny, but if you wish to copy/scan/fax then Move on!7 out of 16 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I agree the photo quality of this printer is the best. However, that only worked for a short time. The last photo I printed came out horrible. I also don't know where you get ink that is less than $25 per cartridge. I have had my printer for 2 years and have been fighting with it for a year having to reinstall the software to get it to work with my desktop and wireless laptop. Finally, it completely quit and won't let me install at all. USB does not recognize the cable so I'm dead in the water. The automatic document feed quit within the first year. It does have a 5 year warranty but the restrictions are so high it's not worth it for someone who lives miles from a major city. If this is the best I may have to settle for second best.

SUCKS!!!! That pretty much sums it up.
by reviewer60606 on October 31, 2012
Pros: It prints cleanly (WHEN it prints). No other pros, sorry. I would be lying if I said there were.
Cons: 1) service sucks (see summary) 2) only the printer ever works consistently 3) no automatic software update, so if it's been a while since you've used scan and fax, you'll have to spend lots additional time to fix-usually when you can least afford it!
Summary: I've spent HOURS on trying to get this thing to work. Customer service often routes me to the wrong place (I have a mac and I wait an eternity ...
Summary: I've spent HOURS on trying to get this thing to work. Customer service often routes me to the wrong place (I have a mac and I wait an eternity online to speak to a human, only to be told that I have the Windows section, so guess what..??? I just get transferred and spend ANOTHER 45 minutes getting through to the mac section (hopefully). NO apology, no attempt to bump me up in the queue due to their mistake....why should they care? They're getting paid for THEIR time. Just lots and lots of wasted time. If you have a lot of time on your hands and love speaking often to customer service with people on the other side of the globe, then buy this one. If you have a life (like I do), I wouldn't advise it.

Works well MAYBE 25% of the time. Cheap & unreliable.
by TechRacerX on August 17, 2012

Cons: Constantly must restart
Scanner/Copier lid broke after a year while opening normally.
Have to slam paper tray for full closure
Often won't grab paper for auto feed
Printer head failure with limited use - not firmware
Often won't register ink refillsSummary: It's back to HP. This is just a piece of plastic crap. I was warned at the store that this was Lexmark's attempt to redefine itself after being ...

[joshua] Pro905 3rd replacement printhead not functioning
[Sheryl]
Welcome to Lexmark Chat Support. This is Sheryl. I appreciate the opportunity to help you today with your concern about the printhead of your printer not working.
Here is our Chat ID: 2565223457105586329. This will serve as your reference number if you are going to chat with us again.
[Sheryl] Hello Joshua.
[Sheryl] Good morning.
[joshua] hi
[Sheryl] Can I have the previous chat ID the last time you contacted us about this issue?
[joshua] not sure where to find it
[joshua] here:
[joshua] new printhead Dec 12th
1-7339200417
[Sheryl] What exactly is the printer doing when you tried to print?
[joshua] I called in last time
[joshua] nothing at all, the black ink smudged out on page 6 of 8 on my last print, and now it comes out blank
[Sheryl] I do apologize for the inconvenience Joshua but do not worry you have me now here, I will help you with the best I can.
[Sheryl] On the screen of the printer, how high are the ink levels of your cartridges?
[Sheryl] Are they above half full ink levels or below half full ink levels?
[joshua] the black is at half, the colors are at 3/4 = they are the original cartridges you sent with the new print head in December
[Sheryl] When you received the replacement printhead, did you install your old cartridge in the replacement printhead or you installed the cartridges that came with replacement printhead?
[joshua] no I put in the new cartridges you sent as instructed
[Sheryl] Okay, good.
[Sheryl] Let us print the test page on your printer for us to see the current firmware level of your printer.
[Sheryl] Do the following:
[Sheryl] 1. On your printer, press the ink levels icon.
2. Look for More Options.
3. Select print test page. Let me know if the printer is done printing it.
[joshua] done
[Sheryl] What is the FW level do you see on the printed test page? You can see that under product information.
[joshua] there is nothing on the page
[joshua] except the red diamond in the lexmark logo, all else is blank
[Sheryl] What is the Operating System installed on your computer, is it Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Macintosh?
[joshua] mac
[Sheryl] The next step we need to do is to update the firmware of your printer.
[Sheryl] Your printer is Pro905, right?
[joshua] I've done all this twice, and each time the printhead has been bad
[joshua] this is the third one
[Sheryl] When was the last time you updated the firmware of the printer?
[joshua] auto updates
[joshua] December
[Sheryl] Okay, auto updates won
[Sheryl] **Okay, auto updates won't update the firmware of the printer.
[Sheryl] We need to do it manually.
[Sheryl] Your printer is Pro905, right?
[joshua] yes
[Sheryl]
Click HERE and run it. Then follow the instructions on your computer.
NOTE: Please do not interrupt your printer and your computer while doing the firmware update.
[joshua] it says my firmware is up to date P905_C082511_00
[Sheryl] Okay, good. Did you try to print a deep clean printhead?
[joshua] I'm updating anyway
[Sheryl] Okay, let me know if you are done updating the firmware of the printer.
[joshua] why should I need to do a deep clean when this new printhead was just installed in December?
[joshua] I haven't even run through the original cartridges yet
[Sheryl] You need to print a deep clean printhead to correct print quality issue on the printer.
[joshua] why are there recurring print quality issues on a unit less than 2 years old with new printheads?
[Sheryl] There is possibility that you are not printing frequently resulting to ink that will clog in the printhead that is why print quality issue occur on the printer.
[joshua] firmware is updated doing the deep clean printhead
[Sheryl] Okay, thanks.
[Sheryl] Let me know if you are done printing it.
[joshua] I am very dissatisfied with this unit, and when we are finished with this session I will be posting the chat via blog explaining my feelings about your product
[joshua] it's done
[joshua] the black ink is streaked, 1/3 complete
[Sheryl] I am truly sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused you, and I appreciate your patience in this matter.
[Sheryl] What are the colors printed on the deep clean printhead page?
[joshua] blue, magenta, yellow, gray
[Sheryl] Okay, try to print a simple document.
[joshua] the gray on the second cleaning page was almost not there
[Sheryl] Let me know how is the print output.
[joshua] the color is ok, the black started strong and then faded by the middle of the page
[joshua] which doesn't make sense because the black is what I use most
[Sheryl] How's the ink level of your black cartridge?
[Sheryl] Check it on the screen of the printer.
[joshua] inbetween 1/3 and 2/3
[Sheryl] Please print another deep clean printhead.
[joshua] how much of my paper do i have to waste to show you your product is junk
[Sheryl] I apologize but we need to print it again for us to correct the issue with your printer. You can use the back of the deep clean printhead page we printed earlier.
[joshua] how many times to you have to replace the printhead before you acknowledge your product is junk
[Sheryl] As you can see there is an improvement while we are troubleshooting your printer Joshua.
[joshua] my apologies, mildly improved junk
[Sheryl] Are you printing the deep clean printhead?
[joshua] as you can see, we've been working on this for half an hour, this is the third time the printhead has failed. how much of my time do you expect me to spend mildly improving your junk before we get real
[Sheryl] We're almost done. Please do the step I provided so that we can finish troubleshooting your printer in the fastest way we can.
[joshua] its done
[Sheryl] Thank you. Print a simple document in black and white.
[Sheryl] And let me know if how is the print output.
[joshua] page 1 85%, page 2 60%, page 3 40%, page 4 25%
[Sheryl] The black cartridge is still not printing fine, am I correct?
[joshua] correct....shocker!
[Sheryl] Do you have another new Lexmark black cartridge that we can try?
[joshua] which blog would be most effective explaining to others why the should never go near your product?
[joshua] no I don't
[joshua] and if I did, I wouldn't waste a $10 cartridge I purchased proving to you a third time that your product is JUNK!
[Sheryl] I apologize but I have no idea about on where the best place to blog.
[joshua] so let's get real, I have a lemon
[Sheryl] I believe your printer is not a junk since it can still print and you can still print fine in color. It's just that its having issue with its cartridge that is why it won't print fine in black and white.
[joshua] I've spent hours of my time, troubleshooting multiple printheads over the last 18 months; only to have the same issue
[joshua] the color is not fine - it's ok. not what I would expect out of a printhead that's 6 months old with little use, but I can read it
[joshua] I can't read the black, just because I can read it, doesn't mean it's acceptable color printing
[joshua] just send me a new printhead so this thing will work and I can sell it for a big loss, buy a decent brand and never look back
[joshua] December 12, 2011:
