- The Lexmark Platinum Pro 905 is a fully capable all-in-one business device, but its touch screen might throw a wrench in your workflow. The Smart Solutions widgets add virtual customization to the control panel, but we wish Lexmark had retained a few hard buttons as well. As the top dog in the Lexmark printer family, the Platinum Pro 905 does the job, but the HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless does it better.

Absolutely the best printer I have ever owned
by PrintAplus on September 30, 2009
Pros: Lowest Black Ink Cost, Wireless N, web-enabled, stunning photo quality, business card scanning, touchscreen, fast, 5 year warranty
Cons: I actually do not have any complaints about this product.

Summary: I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that Mr. Yu gave this product a 4 out of 5 star rating. He obviously missed some of the features that make this the best printer on the market. His cost per page analysis is all wrong. Lexmark offers a high-yield black ink tank for $4.99 which makes B&W printing less than a penny per page. I have tested both the HP8500 and Pro905 for picture quality and the Lexmark wins hands down. Some other things he fails to mention is that the Lexmark comes with a 5 year warranty that covers the printhead. HP's warranty is no where near that. The HP 8500 series is also not web-enabled so there is no way to upgrade or customize the printer. Since the Lexmark is connected to the web, I can upload applications that make sense to me and help my business run more efficiently. The touchscreen option makes my life less complicated than all of the buttons on the HP model. The touchscreen is very interactive and easy to use. Mr. Yu mentioned that fingerprints get on the reflective screen and this is true but Lexmark was kind enough to include a special towel used for cleaning this special type of screen. Lexmark also offers wireless-N printing which speeds up throughput and increases range for printing. The HP 8500 series does not. Mr. Yu does not even mention the fact that the Lexmark Pro905 comes with business card scanning software that will allow up to 8 business cards at a time to be scanned and automatically synchs with common contact management applications such as Outlook, Lotus Notes, etc. The HP 8500 has none of this. Bottom Line: I do not feel that this review is anywhere close to being objective. In fact, if one did not know better, one would assume Mr. Yu is on the HP payroll. Do yourself a favor and go to a store and test them for yourself. I for one am extrememly happy with my decision.

Great printer - Inexpensive ink!!!
by Capital_WRKR on October 15, 2009
Pros: Black ink costs $4.99. I literally bought 10 of those black catridges for $49.99 and I get 5,000 pages???? WOW...the best HP cost me $70+ for just less than 5,000 pages. Plus, the Lexmark machine has apps I downloaded FOR FREE!
Cons: I honestly see none. Anyone that doesn't take notice to this machine or any Lexmarks like it are crazy! Get off the HP bandwagon and look at who makes quality products THAT ARE BACKED UP BY 5 YEAR WARRANTIES.
Summary: So, I can get black ink (which is what my home office typically consists of) for $5. Its about time some company comes down on price. Before, I was spending $...
Summary: So, I can get black ink (which is what my home office typically consists of) for $5. Its about time some company comes down on price. Before, I was spending $70 on two HP cartridges that ran out after a month. Do the math and that is roughly $800 on ink in a year. Now I will probably spend $120 on black and very little on color in a whole year.
The apps you can download are awesome. I follow the local paper just outside of Oklahoma City (where I am from). The news comes on my printer screen. This is helpful because I don't have to waste time logging onto the internet at my computer. Also, I pre-programmed my Platinum to copy 2-sided and two copies of each job and black & white ALL into 1 button. This printer is extremely user friendly and it spits out some good prints (black and color). The sales associate that sold it to me showed me a picture from the Platinum and the same from the best HP photo printer. Needless to say the Lexmark was better.7 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

Fantastick
by gskomasa on November 19, 2009
Pros: I have gone trhough a dozen printers in the past few years. The biggest frustration is the cost of ink. Lexmark figured it out. Great prints at low cost. The screen panel works well, eliminates buttons and allows applications direct access.
Cons: Blue tooth. So my phones have to liink to the computer to print. It would be great to just walk in and print from the phone or device.
Summary: Bottom line. --- Lexmark makes a great machine and now it is really great producing high quality low cost prints.

Of course the larger than normal print head helps make it fast. The individual print cartridges let me replace only the ink that is needed. The XL cartridges give me triple ink so I can put out an entire mailing without running out of ink. Finally, Lexmark is a quality office brand. The five year warrantee shows that it should be the last printer I buy in the next few years.5 out of 5 users found this user opinion helpful.

Touch screen is easy, clean pix, much tech support time
by DargaTvir on April 13, 2011
Pros: Clean pix, very patient tech support that answers the phone quickly, Lexmark promptly replaced a printer, the Pro 901, that was not working
Cons: My big issues:
1. My first printer from Lexmark was the pro 901, and it could not print from my computer. Lexmark promptly sent a replacement, the Pro 905. The difference between the Pro 905 and the Pro 901 is the 905 has 2 paper trays. They are the sameSummary: 1. Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)--it has been working just fine. I have only used it for 8 1/2 X 11 inch documents, some folded, and having no problems. ...
Summary: 1. Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)--it has been working just fine. I have only used it for 8 1/2 X 11 inch documents, some folded, and having no problems. I saw a review from someone with ADF problems, so I was keen to check this out.
I continue to have ongoing fax issues. It is like a continuing bad joke. Yesterday I could not send a fax. I had to plug in my 12-year old HP 3100 in order to get my faxes sent out. Using speed dial, the HP 3100 required 2 button pushes and my faxes were sent. The Lexmark 905 requires at least 6 button pushes to send a fax--even with the phone number on the speed dial.
2. Printing from the computer has been crisp in B & W and in color. Photo printing onto regular paper is better than my last printer. I have no experience printing onto photo paper. I am physical therapist and I print pictures to look at my client's form, so I do not need to print onto photo paper. I did see a review where someone ranted about the white frame around the photo's. To my eye, the frame is just fine. I also saw a reference somewhere about color ink getting used for black and white printing, but I have not followed up on that. When the print button (it has a diamond shape) is pressed, the default is to print in color, so if one is printing b & w, one needs to go into the touch screen to specify b & w. It is an easy step on the touch screen, but it does require paying attention.
3. Copying is not as crisp with some graphics, but certainly adequate for my small office.
4. Faxing has been a challenge. Sending has been fine. Receiving has required many hours with tech support to set up.
5. Scanning has been easy for a tech-spaz such as myself. The touch screen and the window that pops up are all very straight forward.
6. Tech support receives high marks. They answer the phone quickly and are very patient.
7. Why 4 stars? The machine is spiffy and tech support has been great.
Updated on Apr 14, 2011
There has been a great deal of time spent trying to get the fax function to work. I may have made a mistake giving the 905 four stars yesterday.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Does most things well, except scanning
by Virginia1001 on September 24, 2010
Pros: Easy to install, simple software, print quality is ok, speed is ok for an inkjet printer. Black ink is very inexpensive. Technical support and warranty support are very good.
Cons: Poor scan quality. Don't buy a Platinum Pro 905 (or 900 series) if you need a top quality scanner. The scanner has a "known issue" that causes images to be scanned crooked. The scan and conversion software is rudimentary.
Summary: I wrote a product review on Lexmark's website that identified the scanning problem and, of course, they refused to post it. To test their objectivity, I later wrote a ...
Summary: I wrote a product review on Lexmark's website that identified the scanning problem and, of course, they refused to post it. To test their objectivity, I later wrote a more positive review that, of course, was quickly posted. So If you are researching this device, don't trust the user reviews on the Lexmark site. They are not authentic or objective.
The document feeder and scanner are still a problem. It either doesn't recognize the presence of documents, or stops scanning after the first page, or it scans crooked. The manufacturer's "fix" didn't fix the problem. Sometimes the document feeder and scanner just don't work. You can never rely on it.
I even ordered a replacement printer under warranty from Lexmark and it had the exact same scanner problem. Crooked images. Customer service told me that this is a known problem and that the firmware and software updates that were supposed to fix the problem didn't work. I can confirm that from first hand experience with two Platinum Pro 905 printers.
Lexmark will claim that this is one of the fastest inkjet printers on the market and nearly as fast or faster than black and white laser printers. That might be true if you only measure the time that it takes to put ink on a page of paper. But this printer is by no means as fast as a laser printer when you measure the total elapsed time of the print job. The printer takes a long time to process the image, position the print head, etc. So don't expect this thing to print at blazing speeds.

Best Deal for and Frustrated HP User
by Termn8er on March 30, 2011
Pros: Cost of replacement ink at $5 for black. This even beats refilling yourself!!!
5 Year warranty with the 800 number listed on the printer.
Great customer Service. I called, they answered and they were very responsive.
I will never go back to HP.
VeryCons: none really.
Summary: If you really want the best bang for the buck, look no further. With the price of ink so low, and a five year support, with a company that answers ...

Better than expected, good performance, good setup
by jerryc112 on April 20, 2010
Pros: Fairly easy installation on home network. Functions work as advertised. Good print quality for an AIO, I'm not printing pictures. The wireless installation was fairly easy. I have 1 desktop, 3 PC laptops & 3 MAC laptops, all use this printer.
Cons: The software could have been a little easier given that I had such a wide array of installation needs and a home network. It took a little trial & error but it's up and running on the network and all computers.
Summary: After 1 day I'm very impressed. I have a secure home network, wired and wireless and the installation on all my computers was fairly easy, though not effortless (even ...
Summary: After 1 day I'm very impressed. I have a secure home network, wired and wireless and the installation on all my computers was fairly easy, though not effortless (even though I think it should have been effortless). The installation on the variety of devices wasn't as straight forward as it should have been. Starting on the USB connected computer might have been the issue, once I got that figured out, then installing the printer on the wireless connection for all other computers took a little more figuring out, then there was a slight difference between the PC and Mac's...big surprise. Get my point...
I've heard some complaints about the noise of the printer, I don't seem to notice it and it's literally next to me under my desk (maybe that's why). Others mentioned it was slow, well, it's not lightening fast but it's manageable so I won't ding them for that.
This replaced an HP6110 (P.O.S) & an HP print server also a P.O.S. and is far, far easier to use than the HP. However, the software installation is huge...300MB..really? I think it's overkill. It does seem to function better than the similar HP software which was terrible, someone tell HP to outsource software, theirs is the worst I've ever used. Print quality on documents/presentations seems very good, or at least good enough. I don't print pictures so I can't comment on their quality. I'm stunned by the price of the black XL print cartridge $4.99, yes, < $5.00 and they say it'll last 400 print jobs, I guess time will tell. If their ink is that much cheaper than HP, then I'll use this for a long time. My HP 6110 replaced my HP G95 which also was a P.O.S, those 2 printers both broke (wouldn't print) in 4 years. I mean, 2 hours on the phone with tech support and I was told to ship it to the repair center! Needless to say I bought a different printer...the 3rd time.
I gave it 4 of 5 stars because the software was too big and a little trickier than it should be. Overall, Lexmark has my business for now, if I need another printer, I'm buying a Lexmark.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great printer & Lexmark provides wonderful support.
by Chang92649 on November 8, 2011
Pros: Efficient, effective, low-ink cost, printer speed very acceptable for a $250 printer, scanning is efficient and easy to use
Cons: automatic change from Black print ($5) when low to grayscale (use color ink at $50 for magneta/cyan/yellow). Scanning quality is not very good. Don't buy warranty from office depot, they do not replace your printer as promised
Summary: I checked it out on CNET and received very good review, so I went and bought 2 for my business. One printer went through thousand and thousand of pages on ...
Summary: I checked it out on CNET and received very good review, so I went and bought 2 for my business. One printer went through thousand and thousand of pages on daily basis. Works beautifully. However, wireless connection get a bit iffy, so we send it back to Office Depot for Warranty service. They send us a gift card but did not replace the printer or return after fixing. They are now selling the printer at $399. I am out of $150. Don't buy warranty from Office Depot, they do not replace your printer as promised

Had high Hopes, but am overall disapointed.
Pros: It has energy saver. It does print normal paper sheets rather quickly. The Ink is not expensive.
Cons: It wont load multiple page faxes, we are on our second printer and its the same problem. We have to manually load each page. I cannot get it to print an envelope! Just says there is no paper.
Summary: The fact it has two paper trays, I thought I could use the top paper tray for white paper and the bottom for yellow paper and have it print one ...
Summary: The fact it has two paper trays, I thought I could use the top paper tray for white paper and the bottom for yellow paper and have it print one white and one yellow, like a sales receipt off the same print job. Nope! The fact that it has two paper trays is now useless for us. Each print job a rather large pop-up screen appears on the bottom right corner of the computer. This is rather annoying when you are printing a lot but also trying to use your computer for other tasks at the same time. I tried printing an envelope today, and failed. It would not load the enveleope. It kept saying the paper tray was empty, or there was a jam. Trust me, there was paper and no jam. Also, we are on our second pritner and neither would load the paper for a multiple page fax. I now am having to indivudually scan each page. Overall, not happy at all with this printer.

An OK printer, but balky and slow
by apowell on April 20, 2011
Pros: Two paper trays (but you have to link them), cheap cartridges
Cons: Slow, takes a long time to respond to print commands, color cartridges run out very fast, large footprint.
Summary: No better a printer than my old HP C5280. Every time I send a print command it takes 30+ seconds grinding and talking to itself before it does anything. One ...
Summary: No better a printer than my old HP C5280. Every time I send a print command it takes 30+ seconds grinding and talking to itself before it does anything. One printhead has gone bad (replaced by Lexmark free, thanks) and printer was down for a week. The software is not very intuitive and the printer is slow, slow, slow. We often have to issue repeated commands to print anything - and this is from a Windows 7 64-bit machine that's relatively new and quick. I would NOT buy another.
