Great All-in-One, REALLY duff software drivers!
by BlinC on July 28, 2005
Pros: Well-built and sturdy, good quality plastics used. Easy user interface. Quick to scan and print and good quality. Fax is efficient and reliable. Multitasking is A+
Cons: Using the TWAIN or WIA drivers to scan is a BIG NO NO! Both drivers crash repeatedly; ADF doesn't work properly.

Summary: With more than 5 years experience as an IT professional and 20 years experience with PCs generally, I have long been a loyal supporter of HP laser printers and Epson inkjects, and I have never been a big fan of Lexmark.
However in the X7170 they have truly come to the party with a really excellent machine which I would easily give an 8 out of 10 rating if it wasn't for the fact that the driver software is so unstable and erratic that it makes all but the most basic use of the machine (i.e. printing!) almost completely useless. Even when not using the bundled 'productivity suite' - scanning into Acrobat using the TWAIN or WIA drivers for example, the drivers crash about 80% of the time.
Another REALLY annoying thing is that Lexmark don't tell you that you CANNOT uninstall the printer drivers through the conventional ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in the Control Panel - doing so corrupts the registry and WILL give you a system-halting blue screen of death when next you reboot!
The fact that Lexmark Tech Support are not too interested in actually providing support as expediently as possible to their forlorn customers (i had to email them twice, and call them 3 times before I got any assistance) AND they make as if they don't know that their driver software is duff makes me angry - and makes me feel that this machine would be marvellous if backed up with good tech support and if you could operate it directly from its control panel and not have to deal with their buggy software at all!
Sadly, I must give this functionally excellent machine a thumbs down because of poor tech support on their dismal software.9 out of 12 users found this user opinion helpful.

Good Value for a Student or Home Office

Summary: I got this at best buy for 130.00 and it is a pretty good buy. Scans, prints, faxes, and makes ok copies. Does not fail at anything but does not excel at anything. Easy setup. I had no problems getting up and running. I have been using it for a 2 weeks now. If you have a fast laser printer, this can make an excellent add-on. I would not recommend it as your primary multi-function printer for a busy small home office though.
Updated
I have been using this printer for a few months now as a supplement to my Laserjet 4100n. It works well for a small homeoffice with uncomplicated projects. I have trouble saving this program in *.tiff compressed format. You have to use the Microsoft program to do that. The ADF works for multipage scanning but it is not intuitive and I can bet you will have to scan the same docs twice to get it right. I can't fault it for the cost. When was the last time I saw something this cheap that did so much. Nevertheless, compared to its peers it is an average scanner, a good fax machine, and a poor printer.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I have no problem with print quality and ease of use of this unit. However, at scan resolutions above 600 dpi, the images are corrupted by a jagged edge pattern that renders ordinary photographs fuzzy and images with fine details (fine lines, etc.) virtually unusable. (See review in PC World for similar findings.)

Summary: I have had this printer for almost a year. My only technical problem came when I was trying to do two sided printing. I got a misfeed and my color cartridge was ruined. I called Lexmark and had a free replacement cartridge in a couple of business days. I usually get around 150-200 pages out of one black printer cartridge. I'm not sure if this is good or bad but I would think a cartridge would print an entire ream of paper (500 pages).

Very Good to Excellent Home/Small Business Machine

Summary: I bought this machine three years ago, and it still runs flawlessly. It's an easy all-in-one to work with - has a very 'professional' look and feel to it. The Auto Document Feed is very nice and has always been very accurate. Scanning, copying, and faxing are very simple to accomlish. Paper loading and ink cartridge replacement are a breeze with this machine. The color photos it produces are unmatched by any other printer. As much as I like this machine, it's not used all that often - I have attached to my system a Smasung ML2010 laser printer (very simple small-footprint unit, monochhrome b&w only, less than $75 new) and I use this unit for text and most b&w printing. Reason? Typically the main complaints of inkjet printers - slow print speed and the cost is prohibitive when compared to a laser - and laser quality is usually much greater. Text printing on the Lexmark really needs to be better quality and the high resolution print speeds need to be at least comparable to other like units on the market. All in all, it's been a very handy unit to have; very good but not exceptional, due to its flexibility in copying, scanning, faxing and printing but overall, I think if your system has the capacity of running different printers (I'm using USB ports for both printers), and you have the opportunity to get a 'budget' laser printer (usually under $75.00), you'll have the best of both worlds. My system is an HP 'Photosmart' m7170n Intel Pentium IV 3.0GHz 'Dual-Core' D830 CPU (w/ 2MB L2 cache (1 MB per core), 2 GB RAM, 665 GB HD storage (3 HD units, 1 internal 250 GB, 1 HP 'Personal Media' 165 GB, and 1 external 250 GB 'portable' unit), Windows XP 'Media Center 2005 SP3' OS, 128 MB ATI Radeon X300 video card, Happhauge TV/Tuner card, Agere 'PCSoft' 56K modem, HP vs17c TFT monitor, Realtek HD integrated audio, DSL ISP (AT&T), 'Airlink' 802.11g router.

Receiving faxes? Not so much...
by jkbooher on March 19, 2007

Summary: I've had my machine for a few years now and I really do love it, except for one thing. If you run out of ink in the middle of receiving a fax, then you are out of luck. This machine does not have the ability to save faxes sent TO you, only faxes you send out. Therefore, you cannot reprint them, save them on your PC for later viewing or forward them to another person. You can only print them as they come in. If you run out of ink, then you are SOL, because it will spew out blank pages and then the document is lost forever, unless you can get the sender to send it again after you've put in new ink cartridges. I just think that a fax should be able to receive as well as send, and that you should be able to store the received documents in the same way that you can store sent documents. Sending is only one part of the fax functionality. Receiving is just as important to me as a consumer, but apparently isn't so important to Lexmark.
Also, don't bother with online chat to try to get support... I waited ten minutes and no one showed up. And if English is your native language, well, don't bother calling the help line, either. Doesn't anyone speak English anymore?!
