DO NOT buy the Panasonic KX-MB781

Summary: This machine is horrible. This is the worse investment I have made. I had to return the first machine after a few weeks. The second machine was able to make it past the warranty now it looks to be on its last leg.
The scan is terrible. Very low quality no matter which setting I use.
At first the copy and print quality was good. I had to replace the drum after 3000 copies. The new drum must be a reconditioned or something. I thought I had bought it new. It leaks toner all over the machine. I have to open the top and clean it after every copy or print. This thing is terrible.
There is no quality when printing. The paper comes out with streaks and toner spots all over the paper, front and back. It looks like garbage. It is embarrassing to hand a copy or print made from this machine over to a customer.
The fax has never worked. It communicates with few machines. I have to send faxes over and over again. It fails 9 out of 10 times.
This is a piece of junk. No doubt about it. I am surprised Panasonic is still in business. -
C'mon...its not that bad

Pros: It was cheap...$99, does the job for casual printing
Cons: toner ran out quickly, is somewhat noisy

Summary: Bought this for its printing/copying. Use it at my work where I would have to pay 0.10 per copy :-0 (I'm an independent contractor within an organization). Have not had any problems with it in over a year. Warms up & prints relatively quickly, copies quickly, have not used the scan/fax features. NO problem EVER printing more than one copy, or making multiple copies. Toner did run out rather quickly, I bought toner refill online, extremely easy to re-fill. It is noisy if you need a quiet environment, but no louder than the printers I have in my home office (Dell 1815DN & Dell 5110CN). No, it doesn't compare in terms of features/qualilty with these 2, but let's compare apples to apples! Would buy it again.

Before You Buy
by PrinterReview on February 21, 2009
Pros: They do call it a "laser", fax machine, moderately priced

Summary: If You want a generic printer. This one is good. However, don't get your hopes up on a colored copier. A few draw backs: You can not print more than one copy at a time. So, if you want two copies, you must re open the printer file each time. This gets tiresome after awhile. With my model (irregardless, of my atempts), I notice my copier prints at an angle, like I just slapped it on the flatbed and smashed start. So if you expect straight printing you might re consider this model. The last thing, I printed roughly 800 copies, before the toner insists that I am too low. This toner ink runs about $50 with shipment. However, I felt it should be 1,600 copies before needing toner replacement. I do not trust panasonic.com 5 star review because there was no place to sign in and re butt it.

Stay away!

Pros: Price. But that's it.
Cons: Cheap but very poorly built product. Some features don't work, lots of annoyances. Just after few months printouts are dirty. Money wasted.

Summary: Bought this unit on sale from Best Buy about half year ago. I was looking for laser networked all-in-one. It looked perfect by spec. But you couldn't get it in store - online only. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone. It's hard and non-intuitive to setup. Had nothing but problems with Vista. Some features don't work. Couldn't get it send scanned docs to email even after configuring and checking everything. Panasonic multifunction center is a (not very good) piece of software. What is it with Panasonic soft? I also got an HD camcoder from them and software sux even though hardware is perfect. Anyways, back to this printer. It wakes up (with lot of noise) every midnight with no setting to turn it off. It picks up the phone (fax part) even though is explicitly told not to. It doesn't have a power switch so it's either always on or you have to pull the power cord.
And now as it was running out of toner (it has very little toner with the printer) it started printing dirty pages, covered with gray. I tried cleaning it up but to no avail.

- Description: The KX-MB781 is a multifunction business machine with full networking functions to enhance business efficiency. Equipped with fax, copy, print and scan functions, it can handle virtually all office document processing needs in a small footprint that also efficiently utilizes office space. The laser printer function helps ensure high quality reproduction with 600 x 600 dpi resolution. The standard USB 2.0 High- Speed PC Interface allows easy connection to a PC, while the bundled "Multi-Function Station" launcher software allows easy setup and selection of multiple functions. The KX- MB781 also boasts high-speed printing at up to 18 pages per minute1 and a 250-sheet paper tray, so you don't have to worry about running out of paper even during a high-volume print job. The KX-MB781 allows you to scan documents in color or black & white at a high resolution of 600 x 1200 dpi using the flatbed, or at 600 x 300 dpi using the 20-sheet Automatic Document Feeder (max. scanning resolution of 9600 x 9600 dpi is available when interpolation is used). The high quality scanning outputs images with 24-bit color gradations (48-bit input), or 8-bit black & white gray scales (16-bit input). In addition, when the Multi-Function Station launcher software is installed on your PC, you can easily access a variety of image processing functions such as the "Viewer (Scan)" menu, where you can choose Page View, Reduction, Rotate, Duplicate, and Cut and Paste functions. OCR function is also available in 1-byte language designation models. In addition to the 20-sheet Automatic Document Feeder, a built-in flatbed allows you to scan, copy, or fax a variety of originals in different shapes or sizes such as magazines, newspapers, ID cards, business cards, etc. A CIS (Contact Image Sensor) makes high speed scanning and high resolution image reproduction possible even when the spine is raised slightly above the glass plate. With up to 600 x 600 dpi resolution, you get sharp, clear copies delivered at the high-speed copying rate of up to 18 copies per minute1. The Panasonic laser fax is designed for fast, efficient fax transmission at speeds up to 33.6 kbps (4 seconds per page1). This unit can also store up to 170 pages in its built-in memory. Ideal for broadcasting multi-page documents to multiple locations, this feature also enables out-of-paper reception of up to 150 pages. Even while the KX-MB781 is busy sending or receiving a memory-based fax, you can store additional documents to send later. And you can send or copy everything from family photos to company documents with near-original quality, thanks to the clarity and detail of 64-level halftone reproduction. The LAN connection capability lets you share the printer and scanner through the network. Operation of this multifunctional printer from a desktop PC significantly improves office productivity.
