The good: Network-ready color laser printer; USB port for storage devices and cameras; consistently good print and scan quality; well-organized control panel; built-in ADF.
The bad: No duplex option; slow prints and scans; ships with low-capacity starter toner cartridges.
The bottom line: The Samsung CLX-3160FN isn't the best or fastest multifunction printer, but it offers a good value for small offices and work groups with basic needs.
The Samsung CLX-3160FN is a large, all-in-one color laser printer for small offices or work groups. The $600 printer is network-ready and offers the expected feature set plus good print/scan quality. Many of the tasks, however--particularly printing graphics--are a bit slower than the competitions'. If you're looking for the fastest prints, check out the Epson AcuLaser CX11NF, and if you want the best print quality, take a look at the HP Color Laserjet CM1017 MFP. Despite the fact that the Samsung CLX-3160FN is neither the fastest nor makes the best prints, it arrives at a compelling intersection of price, features, and performance, making it a great value for general purpose multitasking for work groups.
Design
The Samsung CLX-3160FN is a large, multifunction laser printer, better suited for a small work group or an office's utility closet. It stands 18.3 inches wide by 19.1 inches tall by 16.9 inches deep. At 45 pounds, it's possible for one person to move it around--the hand wells on either side help. The CLX-3160FN has an A4-size flatbed scanner, which is topped with an automatic document feeder that holds up to 50 sheets of paper. The ADF lets you make legal-size copies/scans, as well.
The CLX-3160FN ships with a single paper cassette that holds up to 150 sheets of plain paper. You can configure the cassette for various paper sizes, including legal length. Atop the cassette sits a single-sheet manual feed tray with adjustable paper guides--convenient for one-off prints. If you need increased paper capacity, Samsung offers an optional 250-sheet cassette. The output well has a fold-out flap that keeps prints from sailing to the ground.
The control panel is well-organized and simple to understand. The two-line text LCD is surrounded by task buttons (for fax, copy, and scan/e-mail) and menu navigation buttons. Dedicated fax buttons let you access stored quick-dial numbers, browse the address book, change resolution, and redial. Dedicated copy buttons allow you to adjust darkness, change the original type, and reduce/enlarge. Rounding out the control panel are the alphanumeric keypad and two Start buttons (for color and mono). A front-mounted USB port offers direct USB connectivity for PictBridge cameras or USB flash memory devices.
The CLX-3160FN uses Samsung's patented toner "plugs" that are easy to pull out and replace. The multifunction machine ships with starter cartridges: the black prints up to 1,500 pages and the color cartridges print up to 700 pages each. The replacement cartridges cost $60 for the black (up to 2,000 pages) and $50 for each color cartridge (up to 1,000 prints). Black prints cost about 3 cents per page, and full-color prints cost about 18 cents per page, on the high end for color laser prints. The printer's monthly duty cycle (that is, recommended print volume) is 24,200 pages, making it better suited for a small work group than a home office user.
Features
The Samsung CLX-3160FN offers the expected range of features for a $600 multifunction printer. Both the CLX-3160FN and the CLX-3160N are network-ready, though you can also connect them directly to a PC using the USB port. They lack a duplexer for automatic double-sided prints (and Samsung doesn't offer an add-on unit, either) and expandable memory. Both models ship with just 128MB of memory. On the other hand, the front-mounted USB port offers some convenient task options. First, you can connect a PictBridge camera for PC-free image printing. Second, you can print from or scan to a USB flash drive. When scanning, you can choose the Scan to USB option and save the files as TIFFs, PDFs, or JPEGs. You can also print the same file types from the connected USB drive. Additionally, you can back up (and restore) the printer's address book and system settings to a USB flash drive, in case of a power failure that erases the settings and entries.
When copying, you can use either the ADF or the flatbed scanner--up to 99 copies. Options include ID card copy, poster copy, image clone, 2-up and 4-up copy, and zoom. If you're using the flatbed scanner, you can reduce or enlarge between 25 and 400 percent. If using the ADF, you're limited to 25 to 100 percent.
If you're scanning documents or images, you can save them to the USB drive, save them to your PC's My Documents folder, attach the scan to an e-mail, or open the document in Paint, Samsung's SmarThru software (for editing), or using optical character recognition software. If you've installed the multifunction printer on a network, you can enable the Scan to Network features as well.
The CLX-3160FN's fax feature lets you set up a password-protected secure receive mode, delayed fax, and fax blast (up to 10 numbers); forward received faxes to e-mail addresses or other fax numbers; and set up a junk fax block where faxes from preset numbers are not received. The address book feature lets you program up to 30 one-touch dial numbers, plus up to 240 additional speed-dial numbers and up to 200 group speed dial numbers.
PerformanceThe Samsung CLX-3160FN's task speeds were all over the map, with fast black-text prints, but slow graphics prints and scan speeds. The only other color multifunction we reviewed recently was the HP Color Laserjet CM1017MFP, but we did pull scores from some older color MFPs for comparison. The Samsung scored 13.53ppm in black text, more than doubling the HP's score, but still behind the Epson AcuLaser CX11NF. It fell to the back of the pack (by far) with black graphics, though, with a score 3.76ppm. Likewise, it scored nearly the lowest in color text and graphics--3.95ppm and 3.74ppm, respectively--faster than only the Canon MF8170c. It scored in the middle of the pack for scans: 4.44ppm for grayscale and 4.31ppm for color.

Happily, the CLX-3160FN was more consistent with task quality than with task speed. The black-text prints showed clean, consistently formed, and nicely dark, black characters. The only issue we noted was that the bold text could use a bit of sharpening--they tended to look a little bit swollen. The color text offered nicely blended colors, but looked a bit fuzzy around the edges. The black graphics print was pretty good too, with a nicely gradated grayscale. The photo elements could be sharper, and the wingding-type characters need to be smoother, especially around curved edges. The color graphics page showed great detail but colors were a bit oversaturated and the grayscale gradient showed banding.
The color scan was sharp and showed lots of detail, but the colors were muddied and dull. The grayscale scan wasn't quite as sharp--it had a hazy quality to it, but otherwise looked good. Overall, the CLX-3160FN was a middle-of-the- road performer in both speed and quality. If you're looking for the fastest prints, check out the Epson AcuLaser CX11NF and if you want the best print quality, take a look at the HP Color Laserjet CM1017 MFP.

Summary: This is an early review based on a few days? evaluation at home as a stand-alone printer. In general I have been very favorably impressed with the performance of the device. It prints quickly and clearly, it scans well, and copies are adequate. I am not impressed with the software. My rating would have been higher based only on the hardware.
At 46 pounds the printer is considerably lighter than most others in its class. The print, scan, copy and FAX functions all work as expected. Color printing doesn't set any speed records for a laser, but it's much faster than an inkjet inkjet, even though the machine is rated at ?only? 4 ppm. Color photographs look washed out on plain paper. As is typical for these machines, it does not handle paper larger than legal size. Color copies look somewhat faded compared to the originals, especially photographs. Because it does not have to rotate toner cartridges, the machine is fairly quiet when printing. Scanning is on a par with other units. The printer goes into energy saving mode when not in use and is totally quiet. When reactivated, it starts to function in less than a minute.
Paper handling is more flexible than on some competing devices, a plus for home users who do ?onesy-twosy? jobs. You can print special jobs such as an envelope or a nonstandard paper size or color without removing the tray ? just insert the material into the slot above the tray. I did notice that the envelope I tested had been squeezed vigorously and rolled on a short radius, but it was still usable. The machine can?t handle paper larger than legal size. I haven?t had any paper jams.
Scanning from the console is limited to 300 dpi maximum. Copies of photographs lose detail because of the limited scan resolution.
The 3160 features a USB port in the front. This can be used to print pictures from a digital camera or a flash drive, although some of the larger drives I tried resulted in a file error message. The supported formats include JPEG, bitmap, TIFF and PRN. The label surrounding the port lists PDF rather than PRN, but this is incorrect: trying to print a PDF results in a ?file not supported? message. There is no preview screen, but the name of the file to be printed is listed on the panel.
Samsung has included features to print multiple copies of a photograph on a page or to expand a photo into a poster by segmenting it and printing page-size sections that can be pasted together. I have not tried them.
The software accompanying the 3160 is not up to the level of the hardware. My problems started when I used the installation CD. Scanning, faxing and copying from your computer are controlled by a program called SmarThru. The installation program claimed to have installed it, but did not. I had to access the disc manually and go to the SmarThru directory to put it on my computer. SmarThru is also available on the Samsung website; it?s a 150 MB download.
SmarThru has serious problems. In performing black and white scans I found that the files it produced ranged from 8 to 32 times the size they should, depending upon the option selected. Color bitmaps and PDFs were also larger than they should have been. In addition, when I used Adobe Acrobat Reader to look at the files it gave me a message that they were damaged and needed to be repaired before viewing. SmarThru is the only program I am aware of that will allow you to scan at 1200 dpi or greater with the 3160. The TWAIN drivers work, so if you can scan using some other application you can get files that are the usual size. I am using the Windows Scanner and Camera Wizard until SmarThru is repaired. It is more awkward to control scan area, can only go to 600 dpi, and can?t produce PDFs, but the files it generates are not bloated.
I contacted Samsung both through their website (slow, poor quality, and does not work well with browsers other than IE) and through their help line (fast, courteous, and fluent in English) to make them aware of what I had found with SmarThru. The good news is that bad software can be fixed ? bad hardware is with you forever.Updated
I have downloaded the software posted on Samsung's website 1/30/07. It made no difference.
As I have tried more scanning options, I have come to believe that the TWAIN driver is limited compared to competitors' products. In a black and white scan there is no control over parameters such as black level, contrast, and sharpness; the result is that if you are scanning faded text the result can't be optimized unless you go to options that result in larger files such as grayscale or color.
It's a great printer, but if scanning is an important function to you I can't recommend this unit until Samsung gets their software fixed.15 out of 15 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great deal for the price
by jmeehan on January 25, 2007

Summary: I've only owned this printer for a day, but I'll write a brief review anyway, seeing as how I was frustrated that I could find no user reviews before I purchased it.
My initial take is that this is a great deal for the price. As far as I can tell, there are no other color laser multifunction options at this price. At least one office supply retailer is currently offering a $100 mail-in rebate on this model, which makes it an exceptional deal.
Getting it set up was super-easy. The toner cartridges are really conveniently located behind the door on the front of the machine. Very easy to install/change -- maybe even easier than cartridges for some inkjets. The Mac OS X driver installed easily, and Printer Setup found it right away.
Copy, fax, scan all seem to work well. Print quality looks good. Not as good as a high end business-class color laser or a good inkjet. But more than good enough for my needs, and the speed and low cost of consumables certainly beat any inkjet. And it really is very quiet. Makes about as much noise as a mono laser -- none of the "ker-chunk" noises that most color lasers make as they rotate toner cartridges.
A few annoyances so far:
- "Network scan" is a Windows-only feature as far as I can tell. If you're using a non-Windows OS, you'll have to connect your machine directly to the printer with a USB cable if you want to scan. However, you can also scan to e-mail, or to a USB keychain drive connected directly to the printer.
- "Print to fax" isn't supported on any platform. My previous network laser printer could act as a remote fax machine, allowing me to print over the network to the printer, and have it send the document as a fax rather than printing it on paper.
- Some sections of black text look a bit oversaturated. Especially bold text. This gives kind of a "fuzzy edges" effect on the text. I didn't notice this on the test pages I printed on the demo model in the store, so I'm hoping this is just a "brand new printer problem" which will even out after I print a few more pages.7 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Bought this with caution based on the reviews, the Office Depot saleman highly recommended it. Before totally setting up, I ran the manufacturer's internal copy. Side margins had black lines, red lines down the center of the page similar to a review I had read. Additional copies had black in the margins. Samsung tech support said it was defective -return it. Did not get another one.

Summary: Had the printer for about a week. It scans, copies, faxes and prints just as Samsung says. Although, when I received the printer the box looked like it went through a war. The printer was packaged on top the paper tray and manual document feeder. The manual document feeder was broken because of this. . . cheap plastic parts. I'll be dealing with Samsung customer service on Monday. The owners manual is very general too. It doesn't provide much detail or many detailed diagrams. If Samsung improves the paper tray, manual document feeder and the documentation they would have a piece of office equipment that would be hard to beat.

Nice MFP-Good Price--but, need to make quality features available in LAN config

Pros: Unless something breaks, looks like a great MFP for the money
Cons: Don't offer hi-quality scanning in LAN config. FAX 'eavesdrop' does not work.

Summary: Could be extraordinary if they want. Small, quiet. Quality is good for general 'business' use. Unlike ink-jet, no more wet paper! Not sure yet if I will print any photos--need to try it on photo quality paper to evaluate. Only get 300 dpi scanning as a network-connected printer--wish they'd update the driver or start using 2 columns for displaying specs: one for direct-connect, 1 for LAN-connect. They really need to fix that. Manuals and Support claim modem can 'eavesdrop' incoming calls to distinguish between FAX and phone for proper re-direction. I tried 2 different machines with no success--finally had to front-end it with a Comshare switch. With the exchange for a 2nd printer I'll start calling Support again to pursue. Bought it at Staples for the $100 discount off $599. Was VERY surprised by the EASE of purchase/exchange. Don't usually shop there anymore but will reconsider.

Summary: The machine looked and felt solid, but pleasingly light. The installations instructions were simple - too simple, all done in pictures. So it was easy to miss the fact that you have to reach into the output slot and find the hidden latch to unlock the scanner. When you boot up the machine and get the "scanner locked" message the manual unhelpfully says "unlock the scanner" to resolve the problem.
It was not as quiet as I had hoped - thumps, beeps, and then a steady whine.
However I'm returning it because it had a "transfer belt error". It also had a distinct burning smell which concerned me.3 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I bought the MFC Printer because of the price and rebates offered in April 2007. I use it at home. So workload is very low. It was easy to set up. But no manual or handbook in box. Just five months laters. I had print quality problem. Some vertical black streaks appeared on the pages. And strange noice coming out to make people uncomfortable. Called help desk without solution. My call was transferred to upper level. But I waited for more an hour without people to help. Called again to leave a message. No return call. Luckily streaks disappeared by itself. Noise still persists. My rebate is not received. Won't consider any other Samsung products.
Updated
I bought this printer in May 2007 on the ground of price and rebate.
The print quality is poor, cause vertical streaks persists occassionally. It generates hissing noise when printing. Calls for technical support. Could only talk to primary level staff. Couldn't talk to secondary level for solution. Left messages and got no return call.
About rebate, told check lost in mail. Still await replacement check in Feb. 2008.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I replaced one laser, inkjet printer and scanner with this all-in-one. All the functions work as advertised. Setup was easy, even for a novice like me. I installed the networking software to take advantage of my broad band wireless router. This was my first attempt and total setup (out of the box to printing) took me 1.5 hours. Documentation is on the CD, not much in paper form. I wish the paper tray was larger and it is a little flimsy. Not sure how that will work out with heavy use. Haven't used the PictBridge yet, but ADF, copy, fax, scan, and print functions all work. Toner installation is the easiest I've seen. No rotating the carosels to install. Just flip down the cover and insert. Check out Staples for the $100 rebate until mid-Mar 07. If anything comes up, I'll update my review.

Piece of Garbage!

Summary: I shopped around and was looking for a solid, but cost effective, color laser printer to use for my home/business office and was just about to buy another model when the salesperson talked me into this one. As soon as I got it home, it worked well and I was pleased; however, once I started to actually "use" the product for work it failed miserably. First off the fax function was abysmal. It would constantly crumple the pages of the faxed documents once they came out of the tray loader. Second, each and every time I attempted to print an envelope with the front loading tray above the paper tray on bottom the envelope would jam. I even burned my finger trying to extract one. After about 15 attempts, I returned this printer to the store I purchased it at and traded it in for the other model I was leaning toward in the first place. Don't rely on this piece of garbage! You have been warned.
