User Friendly and it has it all!
by ddarche on September 11, 2010
Pros: Easy setup with multiple computers running on a home network. Very intuitive. Great screen on the printer which makes it easy to use. The quality of the printing is excellent.
Cons: It is not the fastest printer. When you print, a tray opens and stays open. It would be nice if it shut when the paper is removed. The viewer for pdf documents that have been scanned in is a bit awkward.

Summary: This printer can be installed on a home network by a novice. It was seamless. The control panel is very easy to use and the uncomplicated. Scanning is great. Once you scan a document, a window pops up on the networked computer that indicates a document has been scanned in. Viewing pdf documents is a bit awkward, but I find that if you simply save as a pdf file and then open with Acrobat, that seems to work.

Grayscale Printing uses too much color.
by generalstuart on May 14, 2013
Pros: Scans Well but there is a lot of lag with this printer.
Cons: Color Ink Cartriges are being used up quickly even though I print grayscale 99% of the time.

Summary: The color ink cartriges are being used up even though I print 99% in Grayscale. Canon help support said that the color is used every time the printer is shut down and restarted. I keep my Canon MX870 on 24/7 along with my laptop and desktop. With this printer, when any of the ink cartriges run out of ink, the printer stops functioning. All I want is to print Grayscale but the Canon Company produced a money maker for their bottom line. Shame on you Canon.
I asked the Canon Customer Support for some retribution since I am not printing in color and yet paying big bucks for the color ink. He suggested getting a laser black and white printer. Wrong answer from Canon because I will do whatever I have to, to return this unit.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great scanner but sub-par printer
by hideme666 on January 4, 2012
Pros: Good ADF (auto document feeder), double-sided scanning, has ethernet networked printing, double-sided printing, cartridges last a long time/efficient use of ink
Cons: Drivers are sub-par (confounded by poor Windows (7) printer driver layout/features); often has a wasted first page of a print job; takes up to two minutes for the printer to "wake up" when you're printing to it via ethernet (immediate via USB)
Summary: I bought this printer because it had a double-sided ADF. So far it hasn't let me down in that department and produces decent scan results. The Canon scanning software ...
Summary: I bought this printer because it had a double-sided ADF. So far it hasn't let me down in that department and produces decent scan results. The Canon scanning software and drivers leave something to be desired.
As for the printing, my wife _hates_ it compared to the Epson 9800 that we had (which I thought was a terrible all-in-one). She is frustrated by the extremely long wait time (2-4 minutes) between selecting print and the document printing (ethernet) and the frequent wasted first page. Me, I don't mind it but I'm definitely not blown away by its printing.
In the end, I have to say that it's a decent device and you should consider it. If Canon ever gets around to fixing the drivers (and, they do have a history of releasing updated drivers so I'm hopeful) it'll be a 5/5 all-in-one.
Another bonus is that it looks like 3rd party manufacturers have figured out how to make generic cartridges for it. Instead of paying the ludicrous $16 Canon wants for a black cartridge you can pay $2!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great print quality but it's an ink hog
by NancyLou9 on October 3, 2011
Pros: I know looks shouldn't factor into a decision for a printer but this is a nice looking unit. Prints nice, not too slow, set up for wireless was a breeze. Got this as a replacement for a Brother and I think I like this more for quality.
Cons: Runs through the ink pretty quickly. I had an empty black cartridge, changed it and printed 200 pages at the lowest quality to save ink. Didn't matter one bit. Before the documents were done printing, I needed a new black ink cartridge. *SIGH*
Summary: Wish I had known about the ink usage before buying this; I might have looked at another printer or bought online. I am a photojournalist and quality of print is ...
Summary: Wish I had known about the ink usage before buying this; I might have looked at another printer or bought online. I am a photojournalist and quality of print is important to me. This meets it, in spades, but I pretty much need new cartridges about once a month.
I've also had trouble getting the document feeder to work properly when sending a multi-page fax or doing a multi-page copy. The manual doesn't address this and calls to Canon have been futile as the first level of customer care prefers to try to handle things like this on their own, reluctant to pass you on to next level care.
Also, and sorry to belabor the point, but I have always been one to work to stay ahead of my ink usage. I've always had extra ink cartridges in my desk drawer, preferring to replace them when they go into the printer. With my Brother, I replaced them about 3 times a year. With this one, I'll be at the office supply store once a month. These cartridges are slightly more expensive than other brands and now I see why. Canon is using this as a money producer (though I buy off brand to save money, it's still more costly).
I wouldn't recommend this printer for a business as it uses too much (expensive) ink, but for the casual user, for the occasional photo print, this is one of the highest quality printers I've seen in a long time.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Avoid this machine
by Mistermarin on August 13, 2011
Pros: None that distinguish this printer
Cons: Refuses to recognize new black ink cartridges.
Requires turning off machine, then it recognizes the cartridge.
Can be very slow in printing faxes.
I have not been able to figure out how to make the scanner work...I am going to buy a different grand.Summary: There are many printers better than this one.

Terrible user interface. Expensive ink. Slow
by garne2t on August 3, 2011
Pros: Good quality prints
Cons: Terrible user interface
Difficult to select duplex copying. Must go to "Print Settings", scroll through list, select 2-sided, then choose option. Why not allow us in the top level copy options?

Summary: My frustrating issues with the design of this printer. You would think they would have it figured out as I have seen many copy machines way easier to use than this one.
This printer does NOT allow duplex B&W printing or copying. If you print mostly in B&W and want to minimize costs by printing/copying 2-sided, do NOT buy this printer.
Not intuitive and difficult to copy in duplex.
Not easy to select paper source.
Ink is ridiculously expensive. Ink tanks are smaller than my last Canon printer and just as expensive. They run out quickly too.
Updated on Aug 5, 2011
When printing grayscale in duplex, or copying in B&W duplex, the printer forces the use of color inks to make black. This allows Canon to force you to use more ink than needed. To print black using color inks, takes M, C, and Y ink--up to 3 times the ink compared to using black ink alone. A scam to force you to buy more ink! Single sided B&W prints use only the black ink as they should.
So, it costs more to print/copy duplex B&W than it does to print single sided and use extra paper. That's because the color inks to get black is more expensive than the extra piece of paper.
I contacted Canon customer support about this issue and they told me the printer had to use color to make black because it dries faster. Baloney!
More people need to be aware of this shady practice to prevent Canon from gouging us in ink costs!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Cons: I can't think of any!

Was great but now has unfixable error code.
by gonesouth4work on May 24, 2011
Pros: Quality of printing, duplex, scanning is all great.
Cons: After about 6 months of great service it repeatedly gives error code 6c10 and does not allow any use. It's headed for the trash and I need to find a high quality and reliable printer for home use.
Summary: Don't buy it. It won't last long.

Great Printer always works, but has annoying lag issue
by Sterling77 on February 24, 2011
Pros: All the features that it has always work, it has never broken, and it basically never jams.
Cons: PRINTING LAG I think this is what makes it so reliable because it is running diagnostics to make sure it doesn't mess up and break itself but it is really annoying when you are running late and it decides to run diagnostics on itself for five minutes
Summary: I Love it is the best Printer at least build quality wise, I am not sure about Canon's customer service, but I have never needed to call them so ...

So far, best print I've had, and I've had many.
by EJSoehngen on February 23, 2011
Pros: Its easy to use, easy to install. If you install the software, you can have the scanner send things directly to your networked PC. Auto duplex printing and scanning are great (not default setting, you need to change the settings).
Cons: Like the CNET editor said, there is a significant lag time before it starts. It almost feels like its warming itself after a while of not printing. But once it starts printing, it's relatively fast (compared to my old printers).
Summary: I haven't had any issues yet. However, its still very new, and I haven't printed a lot. I cannot comment on the ink usage because of that. But ...
Summary: I haven't had any issues yet. However, its still very new, and I haven't printed a lot. I cannot comment on the ink usage because of that. But for the scanning, limited printing, and faxing that I've done, its been great so far. My only suggestion is to wait until its on sale at your local Staples (usually around $149 when it is) and they having their special where you can get an extra $50 off when you bring in an old printer and buy a new one that is regularly priced at $199 or more (which this printer is regularly $199.98 at Staples, so meets the criteria). So now with that, a $199 (at full price, $149 at sale price) will only cost you $99 + tax. Then you really can't beat this printer for its price.
