Surprised finally by a printer.

Pros: The MX870 was a breeze to set up networking. I have two of the same on the network no confusion with either install.
Dual sided ADF/Scanning rocks and breeze to use
Can do a lot of work from printer without having to involve computer
Cons: ink cost but that is with every printer these days... .....

Summary: I have had so many problems with printer in the past claiming network/wireless ready yet being a nightmare to connect and stay connected. This was a surprise to have it work flawlessly.
Dual sided ADF scanning is the main reason I bought this. Been waiting for this feature for a while (on cheap printers)
Software supplied is easy to use, wife loves it so far.
She is even willing to install ink. The cartridge lights up when installed correctly so no doubt about install. Very nifty idea!!
Now lets see how long it lasts ;)

Truly all in one

Pros: Sanned numerous family photo albums - quick and relatively noiseless. Scanning sofware is superb on Mac/Windows. Quick American/english speaking support. Double sided printing easy Faxing a breaze. Copies quiet and ink friendly. What more
Cons: A bit longer lag time on the driver and the cave like ink jet replacement areas are some really insignificant downs.

Summary: Only had this a labor intensive 2 months but feel like this is an unbiased review with no over or undergrading which so frequently occurs in the ratings world. Used it with both mac and windows vista 32 with no issues. Patient and enuciating english speaking americans for support - can you believe it. The scan software is a breeze and I have scanned as many as 9 photos which come out as individual scans due to the cropping feature. The fax is also easy to use and set up. I have also used the double sided print feature which is super cool and easy for a techno-challenged old 57 year old to use - if not call an American up and get it fixed with no "Whadusay's?" If only HP new how many light years they are behind this curve, they would be doing some in-sourcing for a change. The only unknown left on this is durability and if it's like other Canon products there should be no worry.

Good quality machine, but slow print speed.
by energy899 on July 29, 2010
Pros: Does what it is advertised to do fairly well. Versatile. Quiet. OEM ink is costly, as it is with most machines. After-market ink is available. It has full wifi- everything can be done from a wireless computer. Some things are tricky to set up,
Cons: First page printing is slow. High quality printing is very slow.High quality printing is needed for many things (where standard worked on previous printers). Regular printing is also slow. First print 30- 40 seconds. 6 pages in about 2 minutes.
Summary: We've had the machine for about 6 weeks. It took awhile to set it up wirelessly. It has some nice features- relatively compact for an all-in-one, does two sided ...
Summary: We've had the machine for about 6 weeks. It took awhile to set it up wirelessly. It has some nice features- relatively compact for an all-in-one, does two sided from two sided or two from one, and has two paper trays. But, unless we use it regularly we forget how to do other than normal printing and have to figure it out again for some things. The less than intuitive operations and the slow print speed for some of our jobs resulted in our "3" rating.

NIce Printer...Does What I Expected!
by golfjim175 on December 4, 2010
Pros: I'm very satisfied with the Canon MX870 so far! The MX870 prints quickly from both my HP Desktop (wired) and Dell Laptop (wireless) computers using my Linksys WRT600N Wireless Router. Scan function works fine. Haven't used the Fax function.
Cons: If you hook up your phone line to the MX870 (to use the Fax function), you must then plug your landline phone INTO THE MX870.

Summary: I was a little wary of purchasing this machine because of some of the other reviews that mentioned slow printing speed, trouble connecting wirelessly, or poor Canon customer service. I have experienced NONE of those issues.
I spent over 30 years in Sales as a manufacturer's rep. At least 85% of the time when I was called upon to help solve a customer's problem with a product they'd bought, I discovered that the Owner's/Operating Manual was still incased in it's plastic wrapper; NONE of the manual had been studied!
Granted...you CAN buy a product that is defective, but I'll bet that at least half of the people who gave the MX870 a negative review never bothered to read the #@*! Manual before they tried to set it up!

Summary: I was able to setup a Wifi connection for 2 PC's very quickly -- no problems or issues. The colorful onboard LCD is far more user-friendly and useful than any printer I've seen. It looks and feels very high-tech. Considering I got this for $120, it feels like a huge bargain. Printing (at least via wifi) is definitely on the slow end. Copying is equally slow. The scanning feature is impressive, though, making it easy to scan to email, pdf, etc. Plus, most anything can be done from either the LCD or the computer -- adding versatility.
I did have an issue with the printer saying there is no paper in the cartridge. A call to tech support, and they had me press a few buttons to clean the cartridge rollers, and viola!
Would definitely recommend.

Very good color contrast on photos.
Easy to set up.
Seems to be well built.

Can't copy from machine to computer via wireless.

Summary: First thing I noticed was the looks. Blacks and steel greys look very sharp. It just seems built well. It's designed to stay closed up when not using, thus ensuring minimal dust and dirt buildup inside the machine. Compare this to my HP C7280 which has permently open trays all over it and you can immediately appreciate the Canon.
Prints very quietly and efficiently. I really don't care much for ppm ratings and such so for me the print speed is perfectly functional.
I printed a high-contrast 4" x 6" photo and I really think it looks as good or better than the C7280 (which is HP's higher end photo printer all in one).
I paid $140 for this machine and so far, it seems just as good or better than my $320 (in 2009) HP C7280.
My HP was plagued with issues from the start, from malfunctioning bloatware that you have to install to not priting the bottom lines of documents to perment streaking on the black cartridge.
After reading the reviews on the Canon Pixma MX870, it seemed the only people complaining were doing so as a result of some fundamental problem they couldn't fix and not necessarily because of a design flaw in the machine.
So I bought my first Canon and I have to say so far I am impressed.
I've only had it a couple of days now though so I'll have to see how it does over time but so far I am impressed.

Ease of use-both software and printer
Loaded with great features
Cons: Sometims can be a bit sluggish before it prints
Aligning the heads takes 5 minutes to do.

Summary: I originally purchased the MP560 AIO printer. I was not impressed with the picture quality. And while I am not a professional photographer, when I hang pictures out in my home, I need them to be recognizable and unfortunately, the 560 was not cutting it.
I returned the 560 and got this one instead. My husband likes the tray for copying, he sometimes has to make multi page copies (front and back) and it is a total pain to load each page in the scanner, flip it over, reload the paper and print the back-which is what we were doing with our old Lexmark printer. This is just a few touches of a button or two and you have front and back copies!
I decided to print the exact same picture I had printed on the 560 as a comparison and WOW. Total night and day between the two. The 560 looked like a cartoon or something compared to the 870. The colors with the 870 were much more true to life, there was more finite detail in the photos. The shirt I was wearing in the picture had ribbing in it, and with the 560 you couldn't see it, it was just solid, but the 870 got the color dead on and you can tell it has ribbing in the shirt. I have always hated how speckled pictures printed at home were (another issue with the 560) and with this printer, you cannot even see the speckles unless you look really close, which I did because I am super picky.
I am really a tough customer when it comes to print quality, I dabble in photography so for me to be this impressed with this printer is really saying something.

Will cost you in ink
by puterjunkie on April 26, 2011
Pros: I like the software for printing and scanning.
Cons: Horrible ink performance. I have paid well over the purchase price of this printer in ink cartridges in less than a year and I don't print THAT much. Scanner resolution blows, too
Summary: Buy something else. Research a printer's page per cartridge before buying. I thought Canon was supposed to be better, but it runs through ink a lot quicker than my ...
Summary: Buy something else. Research a printer's page per cartridge before buying. I thought Canon was supposed to be better, but it runs through ink a lot quicker than my old HP. I'm going out to buy an Epson or Lexmark instead of sinking another $100 in ink.

TERRIBLE INK PROBLEMS
by leffnersteve on April 24, 2011
Pros: none because of the ink problem for me
Cons: I purchased this for work where I would be using it VERY infrequently. The ink problem is SEVERE. The ink levels were depleted so quickly and I usually do only black and white printing on lowest level. The color ink wells are nearly gone and I barely used
Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS (unless you dont care about needing ink all the time).

Nice speed, good color, but weak printing quality
by pie_panned on December 16, 2010
Pros: The color is nice on this machine. It uses ink conservatively but does a great job with saturation. Speed is good too and functions are easy to understand. It was literally plug and play, so that's great for the technologically not-so-savvy.
Cons: Printer seems to need a "wake-up page," where it stalls 1/4 of the way through printing it's first sheet. You have to cancel, delete the job from the queue, and start all over. Also, it prints slanted lines and "italic"-looking lines at random.
Summary: It's just OK. Not what I had in mind, as I run a business out of my home and do all my marketing materials for it myself. I really ...
Summary: It's just OK. Not what I had in mind, as I run a business out of my home and do all my marketing materials for it myself. I really need the copy to look nice, and this random italic lines thing is very annoying. I also hate wasting paper, so generating a "start-up" or "wake-up" sheet every morning is also very annoying. It also doesn't feed special paper like letter head or labels through the document feeder. You actually have to load the paper tray with your labels or letterhead and print that way. Just always remember whether you have labels or letterhead in your paper tray, or you'll have a very expensive printout of Google Maps! This is my third All-in-One in 10 years, and all of them have been subpar (Lexmark, HP, and now this one). I just don't think the technology is there yet for them to get it all into one machine. It's too much work for these little guys to pull off successfully, efficiently, and beautifully, all at the same time.
