Summary: I recently upgraded my home network from wireless-G to wireless-N. In addition to the distance capability of Wireless-N, I wanted to make use of the faster speeds available with both wired and wireless devices, so I bought Buffalo?s WZR-AGL300NH and two LS-CH 1.0TL NAS drives, all of which support Gigabit Ethernet. However, after setting up the network, I noticed that the transfer rates were very slow (around 15MB per second ? 120 megabits per second) Whereas I accept that the theoretical 1000 megabits per second would never be achieved, I expected something around 700-800 megabits per second. On phoning buffalo, first I was told that I shouldn?t use the Ethernet cable provided by Buffalo as it was only for setup purposes. Fortunately, I was using Cat 5 cables. Then after internal testing, Buffalo phoned me to say that their tests revealed the same sort of results as I had found. That is the actual transfer rate of the LS-CH 1.0TL is in the order of 15MB (120 megabits) per second, i.e. 1/8 of the advertised gigabit rate.
So if you want a gigabit NAS, that produced a transfer rate somewhere near the advertised rate DON?T by the BUFFALO LS-CH 1.0TL. This device only runs at 12% of the advertised transfer rate
Pros: Supports AFP, Time Machine backup for multiple Macs, remote access, ample storage, intuitive setup.
Cons: Slow transfer rates, fan noise, cheap package, brick power supply, subpar expansion w/ single USB port, no WiFi

Summary: I needed to backup both my iMac and MacBook Pro using Time Machine, but was unwilling to shell out for a Time Capsule (I already have a Linksys N160 router). I tried enabling iMac file share with a Firewire drive, but the laptop wouldn't backup unless the iMac was up and user logged in so I needed a NAS. Time Machine requires a NAS running Apple File Protocol (AFP) to create sparse bundle images and only guarantees support of Time Capsules, although concedes that other devices MAY work too. After unsuccessfully trying $50 Hitachi SimpleNet NAS adapter (Samba, FTP, but not AFP), I zeroed in Iomega and Buffalo as both claimed Time Machine compatibility. Surprisingly, Buffalo's 1TB $150 NAS worked on first pass after I followed instructions to use wired ethernet MAC en0 addresses, even though I was connecting wirelessly to the network. Yes, its slow but I backup overnight and incremental backup are fast enough. As a bonus, I filled the extra storage with pictures and music which can be accessed remotely i.e. over the internet WAN. Overall, I highly recommend Buffalo (Austin, TX) based on the product quality and ease of use. LinkStation is made in China, the Pro version is made in Japan (2x price) and a host of others in USA.
Cons: Drive lasted three months at which point it began blinking red 7 times indicating either the hd netcard or board were bad. After working with vendor to RMA the original NAS received a second drive with the exact same error, right out of the box.
Summary: The low price indicates a low quality product.
Summary: The low price indicates a low quality product.
Summary: I was planning to buy either a cheap computer or a NAS to put next to my HDTV to stream my media to it. But I decided to go for a NAS in combination with my DLNA TV (in my case a samsung ln46b750) and it works seamlessly. I I can easely stream media (divx movies, mp3...) to my HDTV, access/dowload/upload my documents seamlessly from any computer with an internet access and even from my iphone (great to upload the photos of a digital camera when on a trip by the way), I can close my computer and only let the NAS on to download torrents. So bottom-line, it's a great user-friendly NAS with useful features and a fair price
