- The HP Media Vault MV2120 is a two-bay NAS drive that novice networkers will find simple to set up and use. While it offers flexible expansion options with a free internal drive bay and two USB ports, the intrusive Media Vault software and lack of a print server dampen our enthusiasm a bit.

The good: Very easy to set up with an intuitive Web interface and convenient desktop application; ships with 500GB hard drive and a free bay for the addition of a second drive; USB ports for additional storage; supports RAID 1; includes an iTunes server and Web access for photos.
The bad: Does not support writing to external drives formatted in NTFS; installs programs that start automatically and doesn't provide a method to disable them; rigid RAID setup; no print-serving capability; flimsy drive tray.
The bottom line: The HP Media Vault MV2120 is a two-bay NAS drive that novice networkers will find simple to set up and use. While it offers flexible expansion options with a free internal drive bay and two USB ports, the intrusive Media Vault software and lack of a print server dampen our enthusiasm a bit.

The best available NAS/Media Server for the price
by cholero3023 on April 22, 2008

Summary: I was eager to try the Windows Home server version of this unit but the $500.00 price tag scared me away. This Linux based version cuts cost and offers essentially the same *************. It allowed me to move my music collection off my laptop and have a RAID 1 mirrored backup copy (with the extra drive.) I like the security that offers because hard drives do fail, and I've spent a lot of time gathering music so I don't want just one copy on one drive. This was easy to set up and has worked pretty flawlessly over the past week that I have had it.

Like Apple's Time Capsule, but 1/2 the price and PC friendly
by braytonfisher on May 14, 2008

Summary: This is a ground breaking product. I wanted to buy Apple's Time capsule for easy backup, iTunes server capabilities, sharing files and photos on the internet with friends, and having remote access to my data, but most of those features don’t work with PCs. This product has one 500MB drive (can be replaced later with bigger drive) and an empty drive bay that can either mirror the other drive or you can add a bigger drive later. Also has USB interface to hook up USB drives. If you want to back up a disk image of your computer, you can upgrade by buying the Pro version of the software from NTI. I thought I would have to buy the $599 HP Media Server, then found this for $299 list, and it ROCKS! Especially since it is Linux-based and very stable, vs. Microsoft Server issues (maybe in June they will fix the file corruption issue). VERY simple to set up, and it works with my PC.

I got a lemon - stay away

Summary: I recently bought the HP Media Vault MV2120 from buy.com. I also bought a spare 500 gig drive to plug into the unit. When I put in my spare drive and chose to mirror the drives, I ended up with the first drive showing up as a 232 Gig drive. After going thru HP support and ending up in India several times, I finally got a case number and began working with HP on the issue. They stated they had never seen this before and after doing a NAS recovery and resetting the firmware, they shipped me a new 500 gig drive. When I got the new drive and plugged it in, the same thing happened. They had no explanation as to why.
I think I just got a bad chassis but they are not returning phone calls and emails for days. I think the actual people at tech support are good but they have to run to mgmt every 5 minutes to get approval to do anything. It is very frustrating. I spent 2 weeks helping them troubleshoot it and they still don't have it working. I cannot take anymore, I am returning this lemon and going with another brand that works !1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

A Serious storage drive for a serious user

Summary: The new design is flawless, inital setup was a snap but the remote access feature is not easy. This took about 40 min to configure once we had the Linksys guys on the line.
The unit works like a charm to do mirror back ups and act as a network drive for all 5 computers.
A little noisy when files are accessed.
This backup storage is for the serious storage user who likes a stylish unit. Did I mention there is an extra back up drive for up to a TB of space?
I would suggest this item to anyone who needs a good reliable network harddrive.
Amazon $299 shipped in two days. -
