The good: The Synology DiskStation DS712+ offers a great combination of performance, design, features, and ease of use. The server provides a good all-in-one server and storage package for home or small-business environments.
The bad: The Synology DiskStation DS712+ doesn't support USB 3.0. The server includes only one IP camera license and its setup utility and backup software could be better.
The bottom line: The DiskStation DS712+ is one of the best dual-bay NAS servers on the market, for both home and office environments. It's also one of the few that offer storage scalability for those who want to start small and add more capacity later.

Summary: This unit has been a complete failure from the beginning. It would not allow me to install its OS onto a brand new 2.0 TB hard drive I bought for it. After much aggravation I got the OS installed (onto an old drive I had), but then the DS712+ kept corrupting the files I copied onto it - files that looked fine when opened from other media. Then, after a power failure, the unit told me that the storage volume I had created was "degraded." I deleted the volume and tried to recreate it - nothing worked. So I rebooted it and now I am back to square one - the OS has disappeared from the disks and it will not let me install the OS.
Worst of all, Synology tries to do all customer support by e-mail only - imagine trying to do a step-by-step troubleshoot by e-mail. DAYS pass with no progress. They do offer phone support -- but only from 9am to 5pm, PACIFIC time. So if you live on the east coast and have a job, you basically have to stay home from work to get help.
Cons: Upload of files is slow. Try and upload files, 1 Gig can take 30 minutes. Not possible to view video in streaming. One must waste hours in the synology forum to get things to work. Not possible to view documents with google docs.

Pros: Fast, DSM has tons of options. It is almost as powerful as a server. Best nas on the market. Expandable for growth.
Cons: A little expensive but there was just a recent price drop. No usb 3.0 why??
