Impossible to properly setup, terrible design
by noreg on August 13, 2011
Pros: None that I can find
Cons: Hopeless web page for setup, and no setup instructions that make ANY sense. This thing was shipped before it was done, and the company decided to use a shareware server product that has never been fully debugged.
DLNA fails every time - their is no way oSummary: Worthless. I cannot return this POS< so I will open it up, extract the hard drive and dump the useless enclosure. Verbatim should be sued for foisting such a ...

Works fine for what it is.
by hc2255 on December 9, 2011
Pros: Installation problem easily fixed by calling product support. Easily attaches to router and network. The subscription is only $20 per year. Free Hipserv App for the iPhone/iPad and Android. Quiet. Plenty of USB connections for additional storage.
Cons: Flash interface -- ugh! Give me the folders/subfolders interface I've been using for 20 years.
Summary: I paid about $125 for this. It works fine if you really want to stream your music and photos to whomever. The free Hipserv app easily connects it to your ...
Summary: I paid about $125 for this. It works fine if you really want to stream your music and photos to whomever. The free Hipserv app easily connects it to your phones or tablets. I paid the $20 subscription just to see what it does and, by the way, I have $20.
I'm not really into all that media streaming and just wanted to create my own cloud server to back up my computer rather than send it off to the strangers who run Carbonite. I haven't figured out how to do that with this device and haven't turned it on in months.
I had the exact opposite experience with the Iomega drive that someone mentioned. Although it was beautiful gun-metal black, it wanted me to do some kind of manual port forwarding that I don't remember how to accomplish. If my slingbox could figure that out 5 years ago I don't know why Iomega needs me to figure out how to do it manually in 2011. -
Useless junk
by richamon on October 4, 2011
Pros: It looks good.
Cons: Having to accept a security popup every time you start vista/win7 pc to get connected.
Having to pay a subscription fee for more than 3 user accounts/computers is totally stupid!!!!!
Why should I have to an extra fee to use all the features of something ISummary: All in all it was a waste of money. I will avoid Verbatim products in the future.

Summary: This is great for 24/7 home media sharing and network storage. It can really replace a PC or bulky NAS due to such low power consumption and low noise levels. No problem setting up the unit and runs flawlessly. The latest firmware is very stable (I think previous reviews may reflect an older buggy firmware).

Disgusted with setup instructions
by northernscout on September 5, 2010
Pros: Great way to store material you want to share with other computers, if you could get it to work.
Cons: Once attached to my Linksys router communications stopped with the outside world. Rebooted the router and it started to work again but then immediately quit after issuing some instruction.
Summary: My interaction has been quite negative with this device so far. It would likely be alright on a Mac but there I'd be happier getting an Airport Extreme. The ...
Summary: My interaction has been quite negative with this device so far. It would likely be alright on a Mac but there I'd be happier getting an Airport Extreme. The setup on my PC got scary when I was instructed to turn off my Firewall. I did not like it causing my communications with the outside to lock up the way it did. I had to do multiple reboots. This is not plug and play for a PC installation and probably not for amateurs. Instructions not very clear. There are several pages of them and you really need to print them out. Unfortunately there are captured images with black backgrounds within the pages that don't show up well when printed. Maybe better if they were printed on photo paper but that would be way too expensive an undertaking.
Not for the faint hearted. I do not recommend it. It's a physically attractive package but not something that's easy to set up and expect to run, plug and play right out of the box it's not.
I doubt that I can take this unit back to the store now so will have to go through the setup again a few more times and hope that I can make it work, otherwise it's an expensive paper weight. One thing I'm hoping for is to use it as a printer sharing device. Once again an Apple Airport Extreme would have done all of that and probably better. Starting to see why my son, the advanced programmer, switched over to Apple several years ago and has never looked back. Much less complicated in ways I never appreciated before.

DLNA support stop working after 1 month of use
by wpaez on August 25, 2010
Pros: great looks! not noisy!
Cons: DLNA support worked just fine after setting it up for the first time, but after a month my samsung tv doesn't see it as a DLNA device, so is just a networked hard disk!
