Great Value - Easy Setup for MAC, PC, iPhone or Droid

Pros: Great Value! As far as NAS drives go and cheaper than building your own file server. Its all cheaper than subscribing to services like DropBOX or Apples iCloud, and it works just as good as those service.
Cons: 1. The Software could be better. You cannot allocate to each user how much space they can use for each share folder you set up on the drive.
2. Drive must be returned to change HD inside if it goes bad or you want to upgrade it.

Summary: Don't listen to the cry babys that couldn't get theirs set up. I have been an IT professional for many years. This by far is one of the best out of the box Network drives aimed at the retail home consumer, I have ever seen. Those who had trouble, are the same people probably still use AOL. lol

The drive is okay, the software is awful!

Pros: The drive has worked well for me.
Cons: The software that comes with the drive is a memory hog. At one point it was using 99% of my CPU. When I contacted support, they didn't even admit there was a problem, while their forums are full of disgruntled customers.

The worst part is that they sell these drives on the basis of their awful "automatic" software backup! If you're buying this drive for the back-up software, look for another drive/software combo!

Easy setup - Instant access

Summary: This is exactly what I was looking for. I do not like to install middleware or device drivers that come with most products these days. I was looking for simple network storage. This device offers a lot of other features such as serving media, internet access, etc. All I wanted was shared network storage.
I pulled the unit out of the box, plugged in the power cable, and attached it my router using the supplied ethernet cable. By the time I returned to my laptop and opened "my network" it was there. I mapped a permanent drive letter to the shared folder on the drive and started moving files. I think the entire process took about 60 seconds - literally. There is an installation disc with special setup software, but I did not use any of it.
I have two older XP desktops machines with wired connections to the router and a couple of newer Windows 7 laptops. I mapped the network drive to each of these computers with ease. No hassle, not sweat, and not a single glitch.
The only disappointment is that I would have liked to see a USB port for an attached external drive or a networked printer. Many other NAS devices have this feature. I have always had good experience with WD products and wanted to stay with that brand. I believe that the MyBook World Edition features a USB for an external drive, but not printer support. When I went to buy the device, the World Edition was not available, but the MyBook Live was. Since neither supported a printer, I went for the MyBook Live since it was immediately available.
Bottom line is that I am pleased with it. It is exactly what I was looking for: Shared, always-available network storage with simple installation, no middleware or device driver requirement, and no special maintenance.

decent for the price

Don't buy for Mac

Pros: Compact size.
Cons: Difficult to set up for Mac. Instructions for set up are not correct. Had to call support and set up totally different from instructions. Constantly crashes when downloading. USP too short

USB Connector Broke off

Summary: I went online to find out how to open it up and found this was a common problem. Once I open up the unit I saw how poorly the connector was attached. Seems like it might break of on every unit sold. Now I have to spend the money to retrieve my data and go through shipping charges etc as well as the cost of the data transfer. I would not recommend this product as a result. I think this usb connector is a real problem.
