Pogoplug Pro price range: $56.95

The good: Affordable bring-your-own storage network file server; connect to home network via Wi-Fi or Ethernet; tons of features, ranging from media streaming to cloud printing; can be accessed online from a wide range of smartphones and devices, including the iOS and Android models.
The bad: Awkward and unintuitive media browsing experience; unreliable and choppy playback and file format compatibility makes audio and especially video streaming unreliable; unattractive design; many of the advanced features like cloud printing and media streaming don't work reliably.
The bottom line: The Pogoplug Pro adds Wi-Fi and costs $30 less than its predecessor, and remains a unique and easy-to-set-up device for sharing files online. However, many of its higher-end features (printing, media streaming) remain buggy and unreliable.

Summary: I've had my Pogoplug for almost a year now and I love it. I am able to share all my photos with my family down in Florida and in the Caribbean. What I really like is that they don't have to have an account in order to view the files (unless I require them to in the web GUI). All mom has to do is click the link she gets in an email...easy enough. Considering the price, it really is the most affordable solution for having your own "cloud". Unless you want to build your own FTP server...this is really the best deal you can find. I'm turned off by the idea of paying a recurring fee for an online service like MOZY. The only recurring payment I have every month is my electric bill; but considering the thing sips electricity compared to the other equipment I have running, it's totally fine. The only downside to the device in my experience is the fact that if you have a large folder (perhaps one that stores all your music), seeing the contents of that folder is a bit of a burden. Also, if you're looking for a way to watch videos on the go, you may want to wait a little while. The whole transcoding thing is a bit frustrating at the moment, but it's nothing the developers can't fix in a firmware update (which I'm sure they will sometime in 2011).
This product really has nowhere to go but up at this point. It does what I need it to do...everything else is a bonus as far as I'm concerned. I love my Pogoplug!2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Convenient way to access your files. Slow though.

Pros: Allows secured access to files from anywhere in the world. Since you can attach up to 4 external mass-storage devices, you have possible storage for huge amounts of data.
Cons: Setting up was frustrating to the point I almost returned the device for my money back. Instructions on their web site are patchy, and only my instincts as a career IT person got me able to set it up as I wanted. Expect slow access to your files.

Threw the $80 PogoPlug Pro in the trash after 3 months

Pros: While the device promised to share many USB attached drives, support ext3 Linux file systems and stream live video, I had fairly high expectations to go greener and not share all the drives off a PC/Server. The "PROs" are the promises only though.
Cons: I am not some end-user, and researched functionality carefully before I purchased the device. There was very little documentation, and, even though officially supported, to make it run for Linux clients, I had to go search on 3rd party support forums to f

Summary: In essence: PogoPlug Pro does not reliably work as advertised, and is incredibly slow; my product eventually failed permanently. "Cloud Computing" as an ill-delivered marketing promise, with inacceptable support and documentation. I did not really care about the online sharing option (limited through slow upload speeds anyway), I just wanted to share a multitude of local USB drives (about 15 drives between 1 and 3 TB each) via GigaBit on my home local network, to watch video AVI/MPG files (~500 MB to ~1.5 GB each) on a Linux-based PC with the VLC player. It took me 2 days to get the drives working (all ext3 journaling FS's) on the Pogo device, and another day to get the PogoPlug Linux software to work on the Linux PC; plus it cost me several days to troubleshoot and fix the device when it failed twice. I was told to send it in with the receipt for a replacement, when it finally ocmpletely failed, but given the history and lack of performance, I literally put it in the trash, and connected the USB drives directly to my Linux-based TV PC. $80 and a lot of my time wasted, IMHO.

Pros: Makes a goog paperweight
Cons: DOES NOT WORK!
Cannot use the advertised feature of mirror since it is "processing" media for the next 6 months, even though that's supposedly disabled.Summary: Dirt slow, cannot even stream movies on my HOME LAN network, forget using a WAN, just the LAN speeds suck. Don't think you can share a drive with this ...

Wasted time and money, worthless support, by a real NAS like synology or a competitor, don't be cheap like me and trust pogoplug to do what they say. -

Pros: somewhat "ok" - when it works - "clunky" at best
Cons: Generic error messages for auto backup.
Upon any type of power failure good luck getting it to come back online.
Support is useless - read the forums if you don't believe me.

It seems that anytime there is a power failure you must take it upon yourself to scan the drive for errors and dismount properly. Even when doing this the drive still will not come up saying "no drive attached". When and if it comes back it seems to be strictly by dumb luck. If you do purchase this good luck, I hope that your experience is better than mine and many many others on the forums.

Pros: No PROS ... totally unintuitive ... totally misleading ... One is led to believe that unlimited file storage is available -- NOT TRUE ... 5 Gig and then it's "off the the cash register". Moreover "streaming" requires an upgrade to "Pro" ...
Cons: All of the above ... I'm struggling to see what I can use this "thing" for other than a door-stop. I thought I'd, at least, be able to "see" all three drives attached ... so far, can't find them.

Pros: If you're savy with linux, you can mount it as a virtual drive.
Cons: Too bad if you want rouse it to stream to android devices.

Summary: If I wasn't able to mount pogoplug as a virtual drive in linux, I'd throw it in the trash! The first android pogoplug app hardly worked, but at least I could view .avi files. The new app has a pop up that says"must have video player that supports .avi files",although with the original app I used the default video player on my elocity a7 and it played these files just fine. Further more when I try to use the original pogoplug android app the startup screen informs me that there is a new app on the market and I am unable to access any thing at all within the old app. All in all I'm glad that I found a super cheap deal on the pogoplug for $39.99, because I'd want to kick my self if I had spent any more money on it. The old pogoplug android app was like to garbage waiting on the curb for monday trash pickup and for the new app is as to the likes of the land fill. I wouldn't recommend this to any one to use as a personal cloud solution for use on an android device. I can't speak for how it works on the apple devices. I realy think the way this pogoplug app for android was developed is a complete disregard for pogoplug customers. I recommend don't waist your money on this pogoplug pro device, you get what you pay for and I only spent $39.99. :(

Pros: After the update that went live a few weeks back, pogoplug has doubled their speeds and the GUI is much nicer. All I want now is better video playback from 3g/4g networks. Could pogoplug optimize the playback to what ever device you are trying to play it
Cons: its not cheaper.....I have no cons besides better video playback.

I do not store anything on my Asus 1215n laptop or my Asus transformer tablet, or my rooted Droid X. I love the pogo plug.

Summary: Pogoplug has since discontinued this model (according to their website), which does not surprise me all that much. Considering the only difference between the Pogoplug and the Pogoplug Pro is the built in wireless functionality on the Pro, which renders accessing files of any kind a tedious process at best when connected wirelessly, I am guessing only a small number of people continue to have their Pro wirelessly connected to their network.
Great product, but only if used on a wired network.
