Apple MacBook Pro Summer 2009 (Core 2 Duo 2.53GHz, 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, 15-inch) price range: $1,624.90 - $1,699.00

The good: Price cut from previous version; new SD card slot; keeps the same solid unibody construction and oversize trackpad.
The bad: Loses the ExpressCard slot; switching GPUs not as seamless as it should be.
The bottom line: Apple's 15-inch MacBook Pro makes only minor tweaks to the previous version, but cutting prices and swapping the ExpressCard slot for an SD card slot are enough to make it a solid improvement over its predecessor.
The latest round of MacBook revisions are nowhere near as radical as the aluminum unibody construction rolled out in late 2008. Instead, the 13-inch MacBook has been promoted to the Pro family, while the 15-inch MacBook Pro gets a handful of minor component upgrades. More important than that, however, is a series of price cuts for all of the base model MacBook Pros, including this $2,299 version--the comparable 2008 version originally cost $200 more.
Now that the 13- and 15-inch models have the same basic feature set, including Nvidia's excellent integrated GeForce 9400 graphics, a high-capacity (if unremovable) battery, an SD card slot, and FireWire connection, the main points of differentiation are minor CPU speed boosts, a bigger screen, and the availability of a separate discrete GPU (the GeForce 9600) that can be turned off if needed to improve battery life. Our $2,299 review unit had the 512MB version of the GPU, while the $1,999 version has a 256MB version.
Most users will be ably served by the less-expensive 13-inch MacBook Pro, which starts as low as $1,199, but the combo of a faster CPU, better battery, larger 500GB hard drive, the SD card slot, and a $200 price cut makes the new 15-inch MacBook Pro a solid improvement over its predecessor.

The aluminum chassis is essentially identical to the last 15-inch MacBook Pro. The construction starts with a solid block of aluminum, which is carved down, rather than a thin outer shell, which has had support struts added to it. The result is a light and thin, yet strong, chassis that feels solid and substantial. Except for the $999 white polycarbonate MacBook, Apple's entire laptop line now uses this type of body.
We're especially fond of the larger trackpad that uses multitouch gestures similar to those found on the iPhone. It offers a much larger surface area than most laptop trackpads, thanks to the elimination of a separate mouse button. While the entire trackpad depresses like a button, simple tapping, as on a Windows laptop, will also work once you turn that option on in the settings menu. Of the multitouch gestures, most useful perhaps is sweeping four fingers: left or right brings up the application switcher, while up hides all your active windows. Once you get used to that, going back to a regular trackpad is difficult.
The 15.4-inch wide-screen display offers a 1,440x900 native resolution, which is standard for premium 15-inch screens (cheaper 15-inch models are often 1,280x800). All of the MacBook Pro screens are backlit LEDs, which allow for thinner lids and provide some power-saving benefits. We like the look of the edge-to-edge glass over the screen, but it's also very reflective, and we wish Apple would offer a matte screen option on all its systems, not just the 17-inch MacBook Pro.

The biggest news is probably that Apple has at long last embraced the simple joys of the SD card slot. After claiming for years that photographers could just use an external USB adapter to access their SD cards, the 13- and 15-inch Pros now include this very common component. The cost, however, is the ExpressCard slot, which is now found only on the 17-inch Pro. Most people used their ExpressCard slots, if at all, for card-reading adapters or mobile broadband antennas. While we use SD cards, even in our dSLR camera, several pro photographers have reminded us that Compact Flash cards are their preferred format.
The 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU in our review unit is a bump up from the 2.5GHz version we saw in the last high-end 15-inch MacBook Pro. The least expensive configuration still has that 2.53GHz version, but an extra $300 (for a total of $2,599) adds an optional 3.06GHz processor--the fastest one you can get in an Apple laptop. While our MacBook Pro had a clear advantage over both the 13-inch MacBook Pro and previous 15- and 13-inch MacBooks, most users can feel comfortable using any of the current Intel processors Apple offers for basic Web-surfing, productivity, and multimedia playback.
Besides that dedicated GeForce 9600M, the new Pro also included the same integrated GeForce 9400 GPU found in the 13-inch MacBook. The settings menu has two power options: for high performance or for longer battery life. Choosing high performance turns the 9600 chip on, while choosing longer battery life turns it off, leaving you with just the integrated chip. The switch made virtually no difference in our standard benchmarks, although those interested in high-end video and photo editing may see a more practical benefit.
One frustration remains about this entire process: switching between GPUs is simple, requiring only a button press on the power options menu, but the changeover isn't totally transparent. You have to log out and log back in, requiring you to close all your apps and save your data.
The new battery in the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pros is nonremovable, but Apple claims the system can last up to 7 hours while surfing the Web, and somewhat less for DVD playback. To assuage concerns about the sealed battery, the company says the new models are good for at least 1,000 full recharge cycles--which they estimate to be about five years of use. We were able to run the system for 5 hours and 5 minutes on our video playback battery drain test, with the GPU set for the better battery life option. That's about an hour longer than last year's 15-inch MacBook Pro, and an impressive result.
Apple has an above-average reputation for support, along with a series of accessible retail stores (as long as you live in a market served by one). But MacBooks continue to include a standard one-year parts and labor warranty, with only 90 days of toll-free telephone support. This, along with the proprietary nature of Apple's products, makes purchasing an extended Apple Care warranty almost a necessity, at $349 (or $249 for 13-inch laptops) for three total years of coverage.

First Mac ever and I'm glad I switched over
by lifendz on July 19, 2009
Pros: Simple elegant design, Aesthetically pleasing, fast navigation of the various screens, a back-lit keyboard, and that's only day one
Cons: The green button doesn't maximize all screens like the full square button does on a PC, and learning all the short cuts and ctrl-alt-del equivalent on a Mac.

Summary: First off the price is probably the biggest barrier for many people. If you go online and select education store, and find "your school" wink wink, you can save a hundred bucks off the bat and I got a free 8gb Ipod. Sell the Ipod and you've just saved approx 300 bucks! Maybe now the price isn't so bad, huh?
Maybe I'm just buying into the propaganda but I've never had a laptop boot up so quickly. It's so awesome to get going in a few seconds.
The trackpad is huge and I made a decision to master it and not get a mouse. How this thing works is so amazing. There's no right click but if you use two fingers you can get all the stuff a right click would do.
In short, I love the book. It's so small and thin and yet so powerful. My buddy gave me a hard time about buying a Mac because I could get so much "more" on a PC, but I'm glad I didn't listen.
No more blue screens of death, no more constant freezing, and no more anti-virus, defrags, etc etc.
Make the change. Be a Mac.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

My first Mac and I am having the best experience ever!
by asander on September 17, 2009
Pros: Starts and shuts down really fast.. Great multi touch mouse pad, Iphoto and Imovie rocks! Easy to use and the results makes it look like a professional did it!
Cons: I think the price is still a little too high, but it feels like it's worth every penny when you get to learn everything it can do. It can do a lot. Screen glares depending how much light there is in the room.
Summary: Overall I'm very happy with my computer. I'm not a mac person but was tired of windows. THere are great fetures on the mac that windows don't ...
Summary: Overall I'm very happy with my computer. I'm not a mac person but was tired of windows. THere are great fetures on the mac that windows don't have like the expose feature that let's you set your screen corners to see all opened programs, send computer so screen saver among other options. I can't get over the fact of how fast it stars up and shuts down, softwares that comes with it are great. I do think they should come with Iwork but it's something that you can buy for only U$70.00. Its a solid and reliable computer, never spoke to anyone that didn't like it. I still use PC, in the beggining was very scared to learn how to use a mac, but its easy to get the hang of it. Buy it, you're not going to regret.

Absolutely brilliant machine

Summary: This is my 4th Mac laptop, dating back to a Powerbook G4, and it's the best one yet. I am really impressed with this machine as it appears to have the basic laptop requirements nailed.
First, I should probably say that I have 8GB of memory in this machine (ordered post purchase from OWC), and I ordered the laptop with the anti-glare screen option. I have not yet installed an SSD in it as I am waiting for that technology to mature a bit, so I am still using the standard 250GB 5400 RPM drive.
Performance of this machine is solid. I mostly use a laptop to support my photography hobby in the field. I need it to run Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, and Nikon Capture NX2. This laptop has the horsepower to run these applications well. I use conpact flash cards, so the new SD slot is of no value to me. I also use VMWare to run various Windows virtual machines and with 8GB of memory installed this works well too. Those VMs include WIndows 7 x64 and Windows Server 2003 x64. I have an 8-core Mac Pro as my primary VMWare platform though. For regular web browsing and office application usage, this machine is more than adequate. I am not a gamer, so I can't offer any insights on performance in that area.
Battery life in this machine is brilliant. I can easily get 7 or more hours of life from the battery performing routine tasks like wireless web browsing and working with office documents.
Heat management is also vastly improved over my previous Macbook Pro, a 2.33Ghz 2,2 variant. The bottom of the case stays much cooler than the older machine, despite the laptop being wrapped in a Speck satin case. The integrated NVIDIA 9400M graphics controller is more than up to the tasks I ask of it, and the absence of a discrete graphics card with its requirement for a second cooling fan simplifies the heat picture. Unlike my previous MacBook Pro, I never hear the fan, and the silence is wonderful.
The design of the new unibody case is beautiful. I hope its finish wears better than my previous MacBook Pro, which looked pretty tattered after 3 years of not so hard use. Time will tell.
Bottom line, this machine has squarely hit all my requirements. It runs the applications I need to run, and it is quiet, cool, and can live away from power for a respectable period of time. -
The best laptop I have ever owned
by XYZVector on November 30, 2009
Pros: Great battery life, excellent backlit keyboard, best trackpad ever, rich colorful screen, light weight, powerful, quiet, and runs windows 7 better than most PC laptops. Plus the customer service of apple is far superior to any PC manufacturer.
Cons: USB ports to close, DVD is loud, and sometimes has a minor ejection problem (software has to eject the DVD).
Summary: This is an excellent laptop, I have had for about 2 months. It's great for on the road, lightweight but powerful. The screen is the best I have ever ...
Summary: This is an excellent laptop, I have had for about 2 months. It's great for on the road, lightweight but powerful. The screen is the best I have ever owned, and seen. You can't buy a PC this good, and it runs OSX as a bonus. Yes it is more expensive than a PC with comparable specs but you don't get the quality from the PC, and in the long run from my experience the MAC is cheaper to own. If you are in the market for a laptop, spend the extra money to get the MAC, you will be happy that you did, even if it's just to run windows on it. This is a laptop I would recommend to any road warrior out there.

Pros: 1. Airport Extreme - a/b/g/n
2. Looks and feels great
3. Lightning fast processing
4. Beautiful, beautiful screen.
5. Backlit keyboard
6. Highly intuitive Mac OS is great!
7. Battery life is ridiculous - 7 hours plus for light use
8. It smells goodCons: 1. Screen gets dirty easily
2. Several applications unexpectedly quit for no apparent reason.
3. Speaker volume is unimpressiveSummary: I purchased my brand new 15-inch Macbook Pro four days ago for $1836 (after tax), and so far, I'm beyond impressed. The beautiful screen is a pleasure to look ...
Summary: I purchased my brand new 15-inch Macbook Pro four days ago for $1836 (after tax), and so far, I'm beyond impressed. The beautiful screen is a pleasure to look at - it's so sharp and flawless! The processor speed (2.53 GHz Intel Duo-Core) and the 4 GB of RAM creates a seamless computing experience with no "hiccups" whatsoever. The Airport Extreme (a/b/g/n) has given me blazing fast download speeds. I have only just begun to explore the capabilities of this machine. I am computer savvy when it comes to Windows PCs, and so far, the learning curve of the Mac Snow Leopard OS has been easy as pie. It's very intuitive. I love so many things about this computer (except for the minor 'cons' listed above) that I consider myself a Mac Guy for life. If you are a Windows person, drop some cash if you have it and get a Mac. It's way worth it. I'll eventually partition my hard drive and put a Windows OS on my Mac (usable via Boot Camp) but for now the Mac OS is my new environment.

Best Laptop ever!
by Mymaxfactor on November 8, 2009
Pros: I love everything about this laptop: size, backlit keyboard, ease of use, software included is seamless! I was concerned that the 15 in would be too heavy but its sleek and easy to carry around. I have always had PCs so this was a welcome change.
Cons: Battery life: I have had the computer for about five months and I can tell that these is a slight drop in the length of time that the battery stays charged. However, it could be because Im on this dag gone laptop more than average. :)

Summary: I love everything about this laptop, it was a little pricey but it it holds up for over three years it will be well worth the money spent. I have a Dell laptop at work and I always comment to my coworkers on what a pain it is to have an Apple at home and then have to come to work and deal with having to reboot, crashes, sluggishness etc. My 15 inch apple has lots of room to hold pictures and all the other documents I have. And it doesnt slow the system down! I will say that there is so much on this laptop that i havent even had a chance to check out because its packed with so much stuff. I would say the only complaint that I would have with Apple in general is the fact that they now charge for classes on how to use their computers. I think that this is a mistake because the computers are generally more expensive than your average PC and then to charge folks to learn the system (outside of the basic use, they have only video for that) is a turnoff. Other than that Im happy and I dont plan on going back to PCs for my personal use.

Can't beat Apple when it comes to design
by theGadgetman on October 16, 2009
Pros: By far the best, sleekest laptop you can own. The display is truly amazing. You can also run Windows OS.
Cons: Cost. For component-by-component, you can get similarly configured Intel-system for much less.....but they won't look slick as this though.

Summary: I've always been a PC person. We have over 10 PCs in my household. My daughter started college this year and she wanted Macbook Pro to replace her Toshiba Satellite. My first reaction was....traiter....just kidding, but knew Macs are lot more friendly than PCs. I was reluctant to spend $1600+ for a laptop, but I wanted to get her what she wanted to start her first year in college. After purchasing it and helping to get her situated I started to marvel at its industrial design. You cannot get a PC laptop that came close to its looks. The system was carved out of solid aluminum block, not bent sheetmetal or plastic. It was beautiful and then the display was truly amazing. It was like taking my iPhone screen and made it bigger. And it OS, Leopard and then Snow Leopard was simply solid. She's had it for a few months and she loves it. I also would like to get my hands on simply because it is the best laptop made.

Summary: It's fast, easy to use, powerful, does everything I need it to. Ontop of that it's small, durable, reliable and even pretty to look at. I honestly can't say anything bad about this computer. It astonishes me and I just love it. This is why there are mac fanboys because Apple can put out some great products. As for the steep price, when Microsoft puts out something this good I will buy it no questions about it, and for the record I do own a PC (that I'm on right now infact) so I'm not just a fanboy. I recomend this to anyone out there who's thinking of buying a mac, the macbook line is a great place to start.
