Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display price range: $1,999.00 - $2,227.07

The good: The unprecedented high-resolution screen on the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display makes images -- even simple text -- look beautifully clear. Despite a redesigned, lightweight body, the powerful components, including an Nvidia GPU, compare well to recent high-end desktop replacements. Overdue new ports, including USB 3.0 and HDMI, are welcome.
The bad: With a $2,199 entry-level price tag, the MacBook Pro with Retina Display costs more than the typical American mortgage. The lack of onboard Ethernet jack, FireWire, or an optical drive can be inconvenient at times. Despite being thinner and lighter, it's not as travel-friendly as a true ultrabook or MacBook Air.
The bottom line: The newly redesigned MacBook Pro with Retina Display combines an amazing screen with just enough of the MacBook Air design to feel like a new animal, and to take its place as the best of the current MacBook breed.

Best MacBook Ever!
by jjinalisoviejo on July 4, 2012
Pros: Screen: Simply amazing & must be used for 48 hours to fully appreciate it
Form factor: Thin, light, but study
Performance: Lighting fast!
Wi-Fi: Strong connectivityCons: New mag safe: The connection is not as strong as its predecessor and thus easily falls off when using the MacBook while charging.
Not upgradeable: I don't fully understand Apple's reasoning behind such a decision.Summary: This is my 3rd MacBook Pro (late 2008 13" & 2010 15"). I loved my prior MacBook Pros and used them everyday. This MacBook is simply the very best machine ...
Summary: This is my 3rd MacBook Pro (late 2008 13" & 2010 15"). I loved my prior MacBook Pros and used them everyday. This MacBook is simply the very best machine I have ever owned. It is about the same weight as my 13" MacBook with a 15" screen. It feels great to use, super fast, and the amazing screen is why I upgraded. It is well worth the money. Remember, MacBook Pros hold their values. I have been able to sell my prior MacBooks for around 60% of their original value several years later. If I had children, I would simply pass them onto them since MacBooks are made to last for many years (unlike their PC counterparts).
How do you write a "review" if you don't own it? Al the reasons you gave for not purchasing are 100% not accurate.
I gave this 4.5 stars. I had to penalize Apple for making this machine non-upgradeable. But otherwise, it is near perfection.

5 star screen on a 3.5 star laptop.

Pros: Retina display nothing short of immaculate, thin form, light weight.
Cons: Price, GPU underpowered for 2880x1800, not user friendly for upgrades.

Summary: Disclaimer: I love Apple laptops and have owned/used them since 2007, so my criticism is from a positive perspective. That being said, I find the new 15" MBP to be good, but not as great as it could have been. Retina display is simply amazing, but it needs a better GPU as the 650M isn't designed for such a high screen resolution. I love the thin/light form factor. My current MBP is the February 2011 model and it is noticeably thicker, though I still love its portability. Not all pleased that we can't upgrade the RAM/SSD - major misstep from Apple.
I was planning to replace my MBP with the new model, but as much as I love the retina display the drawbacks force me to pass. What I will do is buy a 15" model with the hi-res 1680x1050 display. It has a much better GPU than the AMD 6490M 256MG in my current MBP and it will do a great job at 1680x1050.
Now that my laptop needs are fulfilled, it's on to the fall when the iPhone 5 will be out. Can't wait!!1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: After starting up the new MacBook pro with Retina display the first thing that hit me was the excellent display. I have never seen this good display on any computer before. Not only is it better than every laptop and desktop available today, it even better than most HDTVs and I am not talking about just resolution, it better in color reproduction also. The second thing I noted was just how fast the laptop was, I have used laptops with SSDs before and my current laptop has a Intel 510 series SSD in it, but its nowhere near this MacBook Pro.
You disagree with what? The only thing that the X220 and 330 has over the MacBook Pro is the 20 hours battery life for that too you need 9 cell battery internal + external battery, which is not standard on the X series (with standard 4 cell battery its battery life is less than 4 hours. Otherwise the laptop is less than ordinary. It has dual core processor (compared to quad core on Pro), it has 1366 x 768 resolution (pro has four times the resolution 2880 x 1800), X series uses hard drives (pro comes with SSD standard), it has integrated HD4000 graphics (pro has GeForce GT 650M graphics) and finally the built quality can you even compare plastic with unibody design.
Also the USB 2.0/USB 3.0 ports on the laptop just works. Every USB stick (2.0 or 3.0) that I have put in the laptop just works. The laptop automatically switches from USB 2.0 to USB 3.0 depending on the device attached. There is no drama like I have seen on some other laptops. And for Pro users two Thunderbolt ports are a blessing.
In short there is nothing comparable to the new MacBook Pro with Retina display on the market today, it is the best laptop available.

Summary: I love this laptop. The retina display is gorgeous. I was so surprised when I first picked it up. I couldn't believe that a laptop could be so lightweight and the screen could be so thin. The words on the screen are so crystal clear. I had to send it back to the factory twice which I'll get to momentarily. But while it was gone, I worked on my old MBP which I bought in 2009. I really appreciated the speed and beauty of display of the rMBP when I got it back.
Now, let's get to the white spots that keep appearing on my screen. I bought the laptop in October 2012. By the end of the month, I was seeing white spots on the screen. At first there were just a couple. But they quickly multiplied. Within a couple of months, I couldn't take it anymore. I sent the computer back to the factory in December. I received it back in January. By April, I had sent the laptop back again for the same issue. I just got the laptop back today and I'm happy with it. But I'm scared to pick the laptop back up because the sensitivity of the screen. Although the retina display is beauty, the continuous white spots that keep appearing are annoying. One of the several reasons I switched to mac was because of the quality of their products. Now I'm totally inculcated into the Apple ecosystem. But I'm disappointed to have to send my laptop back twice within 6 months for the same issue. If you are shopping for a rMBP, ensure they sell you a laptop with the Samsung display and not the LG display. From what I've read, the rMBP with the Samsung display doesn't have this problem. Check Apples support page. Several customers have complained.
I'll add to this review in about a month and let you know if this problem returns or not. One good thing in all of this is that Apple is replacing the screens with no runaround. This last time, I had my laptop back 15 days after I mailed it. That's an excellent turnaround. I would give this product 5 stars but will keep it at 3 because of of the spots on the screen. -

Summary: This is the best laptop I have ever used. It is lightning fast, the display is jaw-dropping, it is light in weight and has absolutely no issues with overheating or anything else. . No one in our apple store or the techs I questioned by phone had any reports of this problem. If you want the best laptop money can buy, get the 15" MBP Retina. Mine has the 2.7 i7 quad core, 16 mB ram and 512GB Flash drive. Certainly the best for photo porcessing , movie and audio editing as well as general use. Simply amazing, a pleasure to use!
I believe the rare but vocal overheating issues have to do with either (1) storage in a closed space and inappropriate settings for power management or (2) possibly a warranty issue. Possibly these complaints are fraudulent as no one at Apple that I spoke to (in the store or on the phone at Apple Care has any knowledge of them) and no bonafide reviewer has experienced overheating. Mine is cool at all times and is on my lap as this is written. I am glad I chose to ignore this probable propaganda. -

Worth it's weight in gold (almost literally!)
by VBlake73 on February 22, 2013
Pros: *Extremely fast. From startup to downloading music to web browsing, this laptop is blazingly fast . Take a look at a Windows 8 benchmark for a jaw-dropping sight.
*Quiet as a mouse.
*Comes as close to a gaming laptop as anyone can get.Cons: *Very pricey but, again, worth the purchase even as a refurbished unit.
Summary: If you're looking for a laptop that will last for years down the road, this is the one to pursue. Hands down.

Summary: I love this computer. just upgraded from a mid 2010 15" pro to the the new 15" retina. ITs an amazing computer and see nothing i need to change. i do see why some people want to be able to upgrade the ram and hard drive. i used to care about that when buying a laptop but i never actually took the time to buy upgrades. just replace the computer every 2 to 3 years on average. this is very fast and has a great screen. I chose this over the air due to its far greater processing power. and over the pro mainly for the ssd. the nice screen was just a plus :) if your considering a new macbook You should very much give this some thought and side by side compare this with others. Happiest i have been with a new computer since my first macbook in 2005!!
