Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display price range: $1,999.00 - $2,227.07
- Reviewed by: Dan Ackerman

The good: The unprecedented high-resolution screen on the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display makes images -- even simple text -- look beautifully clear. Despite a redesigned, lightweight body, the powerful components, including an Nvidia GPU, compare well to recent high-end desktop replacements. Overdue new ports, including USB 3.0 and HDMI, are welcome.
The bad: With a $2,199 entry-level price tag, the MacBook Pro with Retina Display costs more than the typical American mortgage. The lack of onboard Ethernet jack, FireWire, or an optical drive can be inconvenient at times. Despite being thinner and lighter, it's not as travel-friendly as a true ultrabook or MacBook Air.
The bottom line: The newly redesigned MacBook Pro with Retina Display combines an amazing screen with just enough of the MacBook Air design to feel like a new animal, and to take its place as the best of the current MacBook breed.

Great computer!
by marcelapoe on January 28, 2013
Pros: Well built, high quality, and beautiful!
Cons: It is expensive, but what do you expect for a machine this nice.

Mac OS is simple compared to Windows. Windows was never that bad to me, but Mac OS puts everything at the bottom of the screen for easy access. It displays the most used icons on the screen. Clicking on launch pad allows you to see the other programs that are on your mac. Again this interface is simplified. Windows seems like there are a lot of programs on your computer, mac makes it look like it is easier to access.
I downloaded MS office since it is the standard office productivity tool out there. Downloading and installing software is basically the same as windows. Everything is basically plug and play now. Even when I hooked the mac up to the printer it recognized it and then installed the drivers to the computer.
Iphotos is another good software on the mac. It allows you to categorize your photos into albums. The process was simple. All of my pictures now have been categorized based off of the person. It is a really nice interface.
Mail is just like ipad. I like the fact that you can have all of you e-mail pushed to one central e-mail. Now I can just click on the mail icon and my mail is right there. I don't have to log into Verizon or any other e-mail account.
Icloud allows all of my information to be shared on all of my apple devices. This is really nice. I can write notes on my mac and it will be instantly shared on the ipad and iphone. All messages, mail, notes, and information shows up on all of my apple devices. This is really cool. I can write my grocery list on the mac and then bring my Iphone with me and have the list already on my iphone. Cool stuff.
The only drawback to icloud would be if you were a player. Your wife/girl would see all your e-mails and the websites that you have visited. There are ways to get around that. Just set it not to share, but that would defeat the point of icloud.
Essentially mountain lion does what windows 8 does. It uses the same interface as tablets and puts it on the mac. So if you have used an ipad, then you are family with mountain lion.
The performance is hard to judge since I am coming from a $200 Walmart special. Of course it is faster than what I am used to. All new computers are fast.
The retina display is nice, but a lot people won't notice a difference. Most will just sit there. I can tell it is more clear and smooth.
The sound is your standard fair. It sounds nice. I don't know if it can hang with HP's beats audio, but the sound is cool.
The track pad is nice. It didn't take long to get used to it. The keyboard is supposed to be the best out there. It seems like the keys on my Hp were bigger. I like the firmness of the keys. I will just have to cut my nails since my fingers slip on the smaller "chicklet" keyboard.
Here are the reasons to get the macbook pro with retina display:
1. You can make payments on it. -If you can pay it off over time, then sure get the top computer that you can buy. You don't lose anything.
2. You really love apple's stuff. -If you prefer apple's way of doing things over Microsoft or others, then go ahead.
3. You want the most advanced technology out there. Everything about the computer is cutting edge.
Reasons not to get the macbook pro with retina display:
1. You need a dvd player.
2. You need an Ethernet port.
3. It's not feasible within your budget.
Do I like the computer? Yes it is a very nice computer. You can tell it is a high end well crafted computer. I am not delusional that there aren't computers just as good for the same price.
Apple tries to win on aesthetics and simplicity with their stuff. They are well built and simple to use. The macbook pro is a kin to getting a benz or a BMW. You pay the price for status, peace of mind, and craftsmanship. Yes, the kia sport is just as functional as the BMW, but the bimmer is just nicer. It's like the difference between dunking the ball and laying it up. They are both 2 points, but dunking adds a little some else. Or the difference between McDonalds and texas roadhouse. You can get a burger anywhere, but burgers from texas roadhouse are going to be a little nicer.
I won't say that mac is better than PC's, because they are the same. Everything revolves around windows. The whole concept of the OS is based on cats being used to using windows. Also programs still shut down for no reason on a mac too. Let's be honest. I have had apps and programs just cut off for no reason.
Am I an Apple convert? NO. I like both PC's and Mac. This Mac is probably the best computer I have ever had, but it is also the most expensive computer I have bought. So I expect it to be nice.
Final Score: 9.5
Verdict: If you have the money or the ability to get one, then go ahead. -

The rMBP is the best laptop I've ever used.
by Zach0411 on December 9, 2012
Pros: Retina display, comes with flash memory, holds up to 16 GB RAM, unibody, Ivy Bridge, and lightweight
Cons: There's no user upgradable RAM, but I don't really care.

Great laptop! Super thin! AMAZING display!!! Very Fast!
by thisisrandy81 on September 19, 2012
Pros: Display is SO clear it is disgusting! I also have a new 27" iMac and thought there was NO difference. However after using the laptop for a week then going to the iMac desktop, WOW. It makes my desktop look very grainy. The difference is that obvious!
Cons: PRICE! Some apps are not yet optimized for the high resolution screen and look even worse than they normally would.. The largest setback for this system is still.... PRICE.... I bought it but this thing is NOT affordable by any means. Over $4000.00

Best laptop available!
by ManBearPig1337 on August 14, 2012
Pros: The screen is the best part, but it also has all the latest hardware. It fits all the power of a standard macbook pro into a thinner case and upgrades the screen to 4x the base resolution. The screen looks great and the speakers are very good too.
Cons: The RAM is soldered to the board, and the battery is glued to the case.
USB 3 does not always work properly.
Mountain Lion is a bit buggy.
Price (you get what you pay for though).Summary: This computer is the best available on the market at the moment. I agree with others that Apple could have made the battery and ram user replaceable, but they left ...
Summary: This computer is the best available on the market at the moment. I agree with others that Apple could have made the battery and ram user replaceable, but they left the thicker MacBook Pros the way they were, so if you really want to replace RAM and batteries yourself you could always consider one of those. I have owned many computers with user replaceable hardware, and have only upgraded the RAM one time on one of the computers because one stick went bad, so I was not too concerned that I would want to replace anything on this computer. The SSD is another story. The solid state drive on the rMBP is faster than any others I have used, and I am willing to trade being able to replace it myself for 400 MB/s write and 450MB/s read speeds.
As I mentioned in the cons the USB 3 has some issues. I only have one USB 3 hard drive from probably two years ago, so that may have something to do with the issues I am seeing, but I don't have another USB 3 computer to test with and it works fine with USB 2, so I am going to hope that the drivers are bad and they get upgraded soon.
Another con that I mentioned is Mountain Lion. I upgraded right away because it was free and promised to be better for retina screens, but I have not noticed anything too different from how Lion looked, and Mountain Lion keeps re-arranging my launchpad icons (which is really irritating). This also can be fixed with a new software patch, so hopefully there will be an update soon.
Lastly there is the price. Nearly every review I read on many different sites cited the price as a con, but in my opinion it is not an unfair price to pay. This computer offers the power that you can expect from a desktop in one of the thinnest profile laptops with a screen better than any desktop screen. In my opinion this computer is far superior to the Ultrabook offerings from PC manufacturers, because of its screen, discrete graphics and SSD performance. Keeping that in mind, note that the price is not too much higher than expensive Ultrabooks. In my mind the price is pretty fair for what you get. -
The highest speed to weight ratio of any laptop ever
by lyngenberry on August 8, 2012
Pros: It's fast, quiet, and beautiful. What apple does right is make a sturdy, reliable computer with none of the cheap/tacky aspects that PC makes latch on. No bright blinking LED's in your face. No stickers from the processor makers.
Cons: No kensington lock port. I had to buy a separate kensington sticker lock that I attached to the rear. I'm ok with it, because it shows I'm serious about security, but others would find it to be a defacement of their computer.

Outstanding Design and quality
by testacmicah on July 17, 2012
Pros: Nearly as thin as MacBook Air, thinner than any other laptop I've seen so portability should be great.
Cons: Non-user upgradeable RAM. Flash storage will only be able to be upgraded when 3rd-party solutions hit the market.
