Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display price range: $1,999.00 - $2,227.07

The good: The unprecedented high-resolution screen on the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display makes images -- even simple text -- look beautifully clear. Despite a redesigned, lightweight body, the powerful components, including an Nvidia GPU, compare well to recent high-end desktop replacements. Overdue new ports, including USB 3.0 and HDMI, are welcome.
The bad: With a $2,199 entry-level price tag, the MacBook Pro with Retina Display costs more than the typical American mortgage. The lack of onboard Ethernet jack, FireWire, or an optical drive can be inconvenient at times. Despite being thinner and lighter, it's not as travel-friendly as a true ultrabook or MacBook Air.
The bottom line: The newly redesigned MacBook Pro with Retina Display combines an amazing screen with just enough of the MacBook Air design to feel like a new animal, and to take its place as the best of the current MacBook breed.

Apple's best laptop.
by sonelone on June 14, 2012
Pros: Screen, size/weight, CPU, GPU, battery, value(I will explain this is the summary), overall speed, noise, finally an HDMI port in an Apple computer
Cons: Nothing is user replaceable expect for the SSD(In the future), heat, no option for the 512GB SSD from the base model, no optical drive(not really an issue though)
Summary: This is definitely Apple's current best laptop and may well be their best product ever. This is my first Mac and I have to say that I'm impressed. ...
Summary: This is definitely Apple's current best laptop and may well be their best product ever. This is my first Mac and I have to say that I'm impressed. The performance level that they squeezed into this thing is amazing and it is much more portable than my old Dell XPS 15(2 pounds lighter, half as thick).
It is also the best value you can get in an Apple laptop. Since the most similar laptops are the Samsung Series 7 Chronos(from now on referred to as S7C) and HP Envy 15(E15)(These are also the computers I was deciding between), I will compare their prices. For similar specs, the highest end S7C has a price of $1300. When you add in the screen, GPU, RAM speed, SSD(A fairly fast model based on the Samsung 830), build quality, and Apple resale value, you can see that it really isn't overpriced. The highest specced E15, which is still lower-specced than the Retina MBP, is $2150. It has both a slower GPU and less battery battery life. The Retina MBP is 1lb lighter than the S7C and nearly 2lb lighter than the E15. -
This thing rocks!
by sdjkfjdjfjsafdjsj on June 14, 2012
Pros: Love the new display, incredible. Much faster than the previous generation now that they upgraded it to SSD as well. All this, 1 pound lighter and still gets 7 hour battery life! Amazing.
Cons: Would like to see even cheaper prices in the future as the screen tech becomes more mass produced.
Summary: This is the best portable in the world at the moment when you combine wieght, performance, battery life, and screen. The BMW of computers.

no upgrades for it or repairs possible, poor design
by Charoite72 on November 16, 2012

- quick start up
- excellent displayCons: - unrepairable (battery glued in, for example)
- non-upgradable memory or RAM
- no optical drive
- High costSummary: I returned my macbook with retina display to the store for a non-retina one because I bought it assuming I could upgrade later over the 256 GB memory.
The RAM ...Summary: I returned my macbook with retina display to the store for a non-retina one because I bought it assuming I could upgrade later over the 256 GB memory.
A couple typos. I meant at the end:
The RAM & Hard drive is literally permanently soldered in place. The battery is glued in place with the wire from the touchpad on top of it. So in a few years when you way want more hard drive memory or RAM? or the battery has a glitch? No chance. There are no repairs or upgrades possible for it.
Yes, it's good for this week and month, maybe this year, but the designers forgot there to plan ahead and remember that technology DOES actually change/ improve in terms of hardware at a pretty fast clip these days.
You pay a lot more for a model that has a much shorter shelf life compared to the non-retina one that actually HAS the optical drive and is upgradeable and customizable.
I'm surprised the reviewers did catch on as this is a MAJOR flaw in that the day after the novelty of the flashy display wears off, and you may likely need to deal with actual hardware matters, of which you won't be able to.

Summary: I bought this machine in Nov last year. Spent a substantial amount of money as it was customised one. I am very much disappointed with this model as it is not that fast as it should be and moreover it is impossible to use this machine while keeping it on your legs. It overheats so quickly that you left with no option but to put it on the table. So its not a LAPTOP it is a DESKTOP. I took it to service center and they said its prefectly fine after running some tests on the machine. For static electricity they showed me a paper giving some illogical reasons for this static current, which is not appropriate and convincing.
My suggestion it is a "BIG NO NO"0 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Seriously overpriced hardware with poor software.
by Abominabl31 on January 27, 2013
Pros: None that offset the price of this model compared with equivalent or superior Windows products selling for a fraction of the price.
Cons: Extravagant price tag
Oversimplified hardware design

Summary: Let's admit it - some folks are hooked on Apple products. Who can explain it? I'll not judge. If you're a user that HAS to have Apple, this review isn't for you (why are you reading reviews?). If you're like me though and once considered switching from another platform, then read on and I'll tell you why I've had a bad experience and feel taken advantage of.
I use this model for work and I've owned an older MacBook Pro for six years. I also have a Sony Vaio running Windows 7 and an Android Nexus 7. I've got exposure to multiple platforms let's say :) My beef with the MacBook Pro is that for a product that costs FOUR TIMES as much as my Sony Vaio it has a fraction of the features.
My $700 Sony Vaio may only impress my friends who can do feature and financial match, but has TONs of useful features I wish my MacBook Pro had. Let's list them:
1. Windows 7: I could go on at length why I prefer Windows 7 to Mac OS X. Each Mac OS X upgrade seems to remove features such a the 'rename file' menu option or the ability to auto-size columns in the finder. Windows just keeps getting better. I really dig how in Windows I can actually do things like usefully stack or tile my open windows. That 'Maximize' actually makes a window fill my desktop reliably (Mac OS X's 'Zoom' is very unpredictable), and that the task bar lets me access both open applications and their individual windows.
2. Display: For a fraction of the price, my Vaio's display is just as bright an crisp an my MacBook Pro's
3. A two-button trackpad: I've really tried to like Apple's new trackpads. I have! But in the end they just don't help me do what I want to do better. Instead of a right click button that just works, the 'two finger tap' or 'CTRL-Tap' just make it hard to access content menus in Mac OS X. And having the trackpad and click button integrated makes it almost impossible to repeatedly tap the same place twice. On my $600 Sony Vaio, these tasks are a breeze and I was able to afford plane tickets to Hawaii :)
That's just a start of a very long list of reasons why you'd get so much more for you money than by throwing it away on Apple's out-of-date brand name.
Be open-minded and really do some hand-on comparison. Don't let your friends pressure you into getting gypped!0 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Steve Jobs is now satisfied with the new MacBook.
by Bill12321 on August 24, 2012
Pros: The fine aluminum unibody casing was crafted with precision.
The Retina Display causes orgasms for the eye. It is just so crisp and clear not a pixel is wasted.
The battery life is awesome.
The graphics card plus ivy bridge chipset.
Light and thin.Cons: The price is quite unbelievable, especially when you can buy a similar quality Hewlett Packard for half the price.
The ambient sensors doesn't seem to be functional all the time.Summary: The MacBook Pro with Retina Display is not just any other laptop/MacBook. It's a statement, a genius machine. It's something Apple, Steve Jobs and the customer would ...
Summary: The MacBook Pro with Retina Display is not just any other laptop/MacBook. It's a statement, a genius machine. It's something Apple, Steve Jobs and the customer would be proud of. Even though nothing is completely perfect in the World, this machine is a huge step for mankind to reach that point.
The portability is a huge improvement, and you won't really miss the DVD drive. (Welcome to 2012!)
The screen is just perfect. Or even something more.
Though you can buy a Hewlett Packard Ultrabook with half the price, yet with similar quality, nothing really lives up to the new MacBook Pro.
If you are a perfectionist/ a professional programmer/a professional photographer/movie producer/a traveller ( although the MacBook Air would be better in terms of portability) or just simply a person who needs a beautiful sleek laptop for leisure, this MacBook is your call.0 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

This is the best apple computer designed yet.
by RandomK on June 14, 2012
Pros: Standard SSD
7 hours battery despite the increased performance.
Quad core 2.3 GHZ in the base model!
Full retina display with an improvement on the glare and overall screen quality.Cons: Maybe to expensive? Every penny is worth it, i just don't think people have that much money to spend. 100% worth the value though.
Summary: This is the best apple computer designed yet.
