The good: Excellent battery life; improved keyboard; competitively priced.
The bad: Slightly faster Intel Atom CPU fails to impress; other Netbook-makers have shown more innovation.
The bottom line: Asus practically invented the Netbook market, and the Eee PC 1000HE is an overdue overhaul that offers a new CPU and great battery life, but misses some of the competition's bells and whistles.
Editors' Note (June 25, 2009): Anyone interested in the 1000HE reviewed here is advised to check out the very similar Asus Eee PC 1005HA (released after this review was written).
Asus deserves credit for practically inventing the Netbook market with its original 7-inch Eee PC, and its 9- and 10-inch follow-ups. In the year-and-a-half since then, other companies have done much to add functionality (ExpressCard slots on the Lenovo S10) and refine the design (the big keyboard on the HP Mini 1000), leaving the original Eee PCs looking a little dated. At the same time, competitors such as Acer's Aspire One have come in at hard-to-beat prices as low as $350, stealing away the entry-level part of the Netbook market.
With the 10-inch Eee PC 1000HE, Asus has given the Eee PC line an overhaul, rolling out an improved keyboard and adding a newer version of Intel's Atom processor. While the faster processor doesn't add much in the way of performance, the Eee maintains its excellent reputation for battery life, and at $399, is competitively priced, making a great step up from the slightly cheaper Acer model.

For a Netbook, the Asus Eee PC line has always been a bit heftier than the competition, but that distinction is even more pronounced when compared with 10-inch systems such as the HP Mini 1000, which is more than half a pound lighter and considerably thinner than the Eee PC. Even Apple's new 17-inch MacBook Pro is thinner.
The keyboard is the biggest physical difference from previous 10-inch Asus Netbooks. The new flat-topped keys are widely spaced, which is similar to what you'd find on a laptop from Sony or Apple. It's a much-improved typing experience, and tied with the HP Mini 1000 as our favorite Netbook keyboard. Also notable: important keys, such as the right Shift key, have been relocated to a more logical position than on earlier Eee PC keyboards. A handful of quick-launch buttons above the keyboard cycle through power profiles, start Skype, and change the screen resolution.
Considering it's only $50 more expensive (or less, as we've seen the 1000HE available online for $25 or more off its $399 list price), the touchpad is much better than the one on the bargain basement Acer Aspire One, with a relatively large surface and big brushed-metal buttons.
The 10.1-inch wide-screen display offers a 1,024x600 native resolution, which is standard for a Netbook. It's readable, but most documents and Web pages will require some scrolling, and this system lacks the slick-looking edge-to-edge glass of the HP Mini 1000. A quick-launch button cycles through some other resolutions (1,024x768, 800x600), but displays usually look best at their native resolutions.

We were excited to get our hands on a system with the latest version of Intel's Atom CPU, specifically designed for low-power products such as Netbooks. The 1.66-GHz Intel Atom N280 runs slightly faster than the 1.6GHz N270 found in many other Netbooks, and has a higher front-side bus speed.
In practical terms, we saw only modest performance improvements. The Eee PC 1000HE was slightly faster in our benchmark tests than the HP Mini 2140 and the Acer Aspire One AOD150. In real-world terms, you'd be hard-pressed to notice the difference at all. Still, for basic tasks such as world processing, Web surfing, and e-mail, an Atom-powered Netbook is more than adequate, as long as you keep your expectations modest. Opening too many browser windows at once, or running several apps simultaneously, for example, can lead to slowdown and stuttering.
The biggest selling point of the Eee PC 1000HE is the system's excellent battery life, a product of a big six-cell battery and Asus' clever engineering. A large sticker on the wrist rest speaks of "One Day Computing," and promises up to "9.5 hours" of battery life. Naturally, getting anywhere close to that number requires a fairly rigid usage model. Asus says the 9.5 hours comes from running the system in power-saving mode, with the LCD set to 40-percent brightness, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned off, and the Webcam disabled.
In our standard video playback battery drain test, the system ran for 6 hours and 21 minutes, which is an extremely impressive number, slightly edging out the Acer Aspire One, and more than an hour better than the HP Mini 2140.
Asus covers its laptops with a standard, one-year, parts-and-labor warranty, and it offers online Web-based help and a toll-free phone number. The company's support Web site has improved much over the past few years, and includes easy-to-find driver downloads and a brief FAQ.

ASUS 1000HE Received today - Initial Thoughts
by jmchien on February 24, 2009
Pros: Good keyboard layout
Stylish and sturdy
Smart Pad mouse
Long battery life
Speakers sound well for small size
Relatively inexpensive ($375 pre-order Amazon.com)Cons: A bit heavy for a netbook (excluding battery)
I bit thicker than expected
Very prone to fingerprints (but comes with wipe cloth)
Mouse buttons very stiff
Screen could be brighterSummary: My first impression with the Asus 1000HE with only an hour of use is quite positive.

2/25/09 - Update
I haven't yet tested the actual battery life (still charging) or done any performance testing (seems to run fairly smooth)
A few things to note:
The screen size will need getting used to (1024x600) if you're used to a higher resolution.
The keyboard is well laid out, however if you have big hands (mine are medium sized) then it will get cramped.
The mouse pad will need getting used to since for some reason the buttons are pretty stiff. However, the multifunction pad (like in the new MacBooks) is pretty cool (zoom, rotate, open my computer, etc...).
That is it for now, I will update later as I play with it some more.
Updated on Feb 25, 2009
Battery life:
The battery life of the Asus 1000HE is excellent. The 9.5 hours is easily achievable under certain conditions. In fact I was able to achieve 9.75 hours on Power Saving mode (cpu speed decreases to 1.2MHz), turning off the camera and bluetooth, and screen brightness at ~40%.
Also to reiterate on the screen brightness, if you are used to say the MacBooks (with LED backlit) then you will be a bit disappointed with the brightness of the Asus 1000HE. It's not to say the screen is not bright, but definitely not as bright as the MacBooks.
Updated on Mar 2, 2009*Final Update 3/2/09*
So my final verdict is 4/4.5 out of 5 stars.
I really love the battery life and well laid out / easy to type keyboard and the multi-function mouse pad.
I would have given 5 stars if the following were improved/better:
1. weight: even without the battery it's on the heavier side of netbooks
2. thickness: the thickest point is at the back reaching 1.65" (measured from flat desk using a caliper)
3. screen brightness: the screen is not as bright as a lot other notebooks
on a side note, the 10" size screen is nice, but I would not recommend using it all day...it may just be me, but I'm used to larger screens and so my eyes feel strained at times
Overall highly recommended! Try getting it less than $400, but even at $400 it's still worth it!17 out of 17 users found this user opinion helpful.

Excellent except for the panel brightness
by JamesDuPuy on March 4, 2009
Pros: BATTERY LIFE!!! Video is better than the 1000H, Bluetooth seems to work very well, better than many, WiFi locks in very fast, Keyboard is MUCH nicer than previous Asus netbooks!
Cons: It's a bit heavier, but not enough to bother me. My one major gripe is that the LED back-lit screen is a bit blue-ish, (can be corrected easily in the color correction) and the brightness is lower.

Summary: Hey, It's a GREAT little computer! I wish the 901 could have those same specs! (I am installing a 64 gig drive in mine) The HE has fantastic battery life! I got a bit over 5.5 hours running a broad-band adapter, Brightness at 100% Volume full blast, WiFi and Bluetooth on, and a flash drive connected. I got less than half that on the 1000H. The broad-band adapter pulls a fair amount of current. I have used it for well over 7 hours without it, even with the WiFi and Bluetooth on and screen at 100%. You will end up keeping the screen at 100% because it is about 3/4 as bright as the 1000H. It's still blenty adiquet, I just like a nice bright screen. Likely due to the LED backlight. On the plus side, if it's a little cold, it is not dim as the standard panel would be when cold. The keyboard is much nicer! Having a second FN key next to the directional keys makes hitting Home/End/Pgup/Pgdown a dream. It is nice to type on too. One other minor gripe, it comes partitioned as 2 drives. It actually has a hidden partition that allows using F9 at startup to "start over" much like reformatting and re-installing the operating system. I comes with Star Office which is pretty much the same as Open Office which is a great office suite. I find the track pad fine, but use a bluetooth mouse also. For the money, the 1000HE is a very nice computer! Unless you are doing gaming or demanding graphics, it can be your main computer. If so, you will need an external optical drive (CD/DVD) if you want to burn CD's/DVD's or load software from CD's or DVD's. Just get it! you won't be sorry!

Summary: Prior to using this netbook, I used a Dell XPS 1730, 17 inch gaming labtop (with Vista) that weighted in at "heavy." Therefore, it does take time to get used to keyboard and the stiff mouse unless you use a bluetooth mouse. This pc is so light and travels so well as well as the LONG battery life makes this one top notch to me. I have used this for a lot of projects in the week and a half I have owned it and using the keyboard and mouse is getting better and better. I have used all three USB ports at the same time using various items as a DVD writer and flash drives and the performance is still fantastic. I liked it so well, my wife also bought one. I have loaded some heavy software that I use daily with multiple programs running at the same time and still this small pc with Windows XP, out performs the 17 inch using the same programs with Vista. I honestly did not expect so much out of so little and yes, I did a lot of research and reviewing of the ones listed here by cnet and ended up with the Eee PC 1000HE. For the price it's the best PC on the market in my opinion.

Best Netbook By Far on The Market
by kaps--2008 on March 2, 2009
Pros: Extraordinary battery life, fastest benchmarks, excelllent keyboard, big HD, what is not to like on this new, innovative Netbook!
Cons: I really don't understand your review. The Eee 1000HE beats out everyone else in your benchmarks, has all the features and a battery life that leaves everyone else in the dust. All of this and it is almost $100 less than the HP Mini 2140!

Summary: Don't pay any attention to Cnet's review and look at scores from actual users and you'll get this beauty! Save $110 as well. Please look at reader comments on some of the other boards and see new owners give this beauty perfect scores. This is just another Cnet biased review.
Both PCMag and PC World list the Eee PC 1000HE and their editor's choice and have it scored as their top Netbook. Does this tell you anything about CNet's review reliability!

Summary: On paper, the improvements over the old 1000 seem subtle. In person, they're huge. Before the 1000HE, ASUS was clearly well behind the Samsung NC10, the Acer Aspire One, the HP Mini 1000, and the Lenovo S10, when there was no reason for me to pick an ASUS over any of the alternatives. With this netbook though, they've shown that they're more than able to fix their problems to reclaim their throne.

Great Buy Worth Every Penny
by Billyrayx on March 6, 2009
Pros: I was looking for a netbook with a good amount of speed, but not a desktop replacement. It playes dvd movies from my external usb DVD with no trouble at all. Ive been playing streaming videos without any trouble. Easy expansion of HD and RAM.
Cons: Ive had this for only a week and ive found no real problems. It would have been nice to have an express card plug in for aircards. Maybe next time.

Summary: After purchasing the 100HE I only used it for a short time before upgrading the HD to a WD Scorpio Black 320 gig 7200-RPM drive. I also installed a 2-gig RAM stick. I?ve read that people have had trouble with XP not reading the new ram, but I didn?t seem to have this problem, but I replaced the ram at the same time as the HD. While in the BIOS I did turn of the boot booster and changed the boot priority to the USB DVD unit. The recovery disk worked great but it did partition the drive into 2 partitions. No big deal I'm planning on putting XP pro on it later. The WIFI connects great everywhere I?ve tried and the Bluetooth works great with my headphones and my Bluetooth phone modem. Again an express card slot would have been great. I have not tried to run the battery all the way down yet, but with playing videos and using the USB DVD its says about 6 hrs even after the HD upgrade. With the screen turned all the way down and no WIFI on I?m getting about 8 + hrs on the indicator. The bottom line is this Netbook fills my needs perfectly and was easily upgradable. I cant see any real concerns as of yet, but remember this in not a desktop replacement laptop it has limitation, but if your looking for a high end Netbook this is where you need to put your money.

The more I use it, the better I like it
by cat walking on May 22, 2009
Pros: Amazing battery life; bright, clear, sharp screen; great keyboard and multi-touch touchpad; surprisingly fast processor; decent size hard drive; great wifi connectivity; solid build quality; bluetooth; reasonable price; WinXP
Cons: Nothing significant - minor quibbles (would have preferred white; not a fan of fingerprint highlighting super glossy finish; should have 2MB of Ram already installed - ram is cheap and most people would happily pay a few bucks extra for this)

Summary: After purchasing only behemoth desktop replacment laptops for years, I became a fan of light-weight notiebooks when I bought a small bargain-priced 12.1 inch laptop as an impulse buy and found I got more use out of it than all my other notebooks combined, simply due to the portability. So when it died recently, I decided to try a netbook - after looking at reviews, bought this one for around $380 from Newegg (excellent vendor with good reputation - I have been buying from them for several years and feel comfortable to recommend them), together with lightweight, external DVD drive ($50) and 2MB ram module ($12).
I second (trillionth?) the recommendation to upgrade the RAM to 2MB - I can vouch for it being pretty easy to do (as I'm a total klutz and still got this done successfully) - just remember to touch metal each time before you get in netbook's innards to discharge any electricity and take your time - 1MB ram card is easy to pop out - hardest part was seating the 2MB ram card - I really had to shove on that sucker and there wasn't much room for leverage - I ended up using a plastic tableknife to spread pressure evenly along top edge of the ram module and pushing it in the slot with another. Whew! Then booted straight into bios (F2), checked 2MB module was being recognised and SAVED - don't exit bios without saving! - there is a prompt at bottom of the screen telling you what to hit to save (think is F10). Then booted normally and all was golden.
Was hesitant on screen size, but lcd on this machine is outstanding and found I adjusted rapidly - several reviewers suggested auto-hiding taskbar to get more screen real estate and I have been doing that and is surprisingly good tip. Took a few days to get used to the multi-touchpad, but now I love it and use multi-touch gestures constantly (expand and shrink screen for reading, scrolling, etc. - so far works great in every application I've used it in) - on the buttons, not actually stiff - they are designed to be pushed from side with thumb, not from top - however mine loosened up nicely within a week and work fine either way now. Do get delay sometimes between putting in a gesture and when it works, mostly on re-sizing - not sure what's up with that, but is minor and hopefully will be fixed with an update.
I am a touch typist and can vouch for this keyboard - layout and size is excellent and I am getting only a little below my usual 70wpm ,no prob.
Bootup is fast (even though I'm launching over 10 programs on start up) and typically takes no more than 1-1/2 minutes. Runs nice, stable WinXP (as opposed to Vista bugfest - just say no to BSOD!) Multi-tasking is decent - so far have been able to run word processor, graphics program, music player and internet at same time with no issues. Battery life is amazing - using default settings, I run around all day with this puppy continuously on and b-life has lasted all day every time, with plenty to spare (about 4 to 6 hours actually computing, the rest in standby and hibernation). Video playback is decent. Seems to run all programs well (except, of course, for processor-intensive applications like high-end graphics programs and gaming). No problems connecting anywhere with wifi, and generally get a strong, clear signal. No heat issues so far, though I probably will buy a light-weight heat dispersal pad just to increase life of this machine.
Bottomline - best notebook available at reasonable price - at least until the new, improved mobile chipsets hit the US market!
(nvidia combo cpu/graphics chipset is already available and I considered it but could not justify the price)3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great Product For the Mobile and Mobility Impaired!
by tomj1969 on March 26, 2009

Summary: I bought this product for my mother, who uses a wheelchair. While some posters have said the unit is a little to thick, for her purposes the size is perfect - it is small enough for her to easily carry it around, but big enough to sit stably on her lap when being used. It connected to her wireless network with no problem and maintains a consistently strong connection. She primarily uses it for web surfing, email and online shopping, but has started to get into some of the online multimedia content as well, which the 1000HE does surprisingly well with. The battery life is almost as good as advertised - around 8 hours. It might even make it to the claimed 9.5 hours if the power saving features were tweaked.
If you are looking for a netbook or mini laptop primarily for internet and basic productivity use (comes with open office), this is the one I would strongly recommend.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I don't if this lasts the full 9.5 hours that Asus claims, but it lasts all day which means I don't have to lug the charger with me, but even that is small and light weight. Overall, I'm really pleased with this netbook -highly portable, yet big enough to comfortably work on. My main complaint would be the slightly non-standard keyboard layout with the smaller than usual right-side shift key.

Summary: is it just me or did the Asus EEEHE outperform all other models on CNET tests, while remaining one of the cheapest models with the best battery life? Honestly if its novelty and bells and whistles you want, than why are you buying a netbook? The whole point is that all you want is web and word. If netbook makers get too cutesy than we'll have the same issues as before, 20 lb "laptops" that can burn blue ray discs.
