Asus Eee PC 1005HA (Intel Atom N280 1.66GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, XP Home, blue) price range: $329.41 - $389.89

The good: Sleek, attractive design; lower price; amazing battery.
The bad: Thicker and heavier than the previous model; still near the upper end of the Netbook price range.
The bottom line: Asus hits nearly all the marks in the 1005HA, the latest version of its iconic Eee PC, highlighted by a 6-hour-plus battery life.
We were very fond of the previous version of Asus' Eee PC, the 1008HA, which represented a radical design change from the boxy Eee PCs of the past. But its high-end (for a Netbook) price, at $429, slipped just over the line for many, and its nonremovable battery wasn't as long-lasting as we've seen in other Eee PCs.
The latest revision, called the 1005HA, keeps the slim, tapered design but ditches the somewhat cumbersome cover flaps on the ports and adds a more traditional six-cell battery. This means a slightly thicker and heavier system, but also one that's our current Netbook battery life leader. Add in a slightly shaved price tag, down to a more reasonable $389 (although some perfectly usable Netbooks are down to $299), and you have what may be our new go-to Netbook choice.
| Price as reviewed | $389 |
| Processor | 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 |
| Memory | 1GB, 533MHz DDR2 |
| Hard drive | 160GB 5,400rpm |
| Chipset | Mobile Intel 945GM Express |
| Graphics | Mobile Intel GMA 950 (integrated) |
| Operating System | Windows XP |
| Dimensions (WD) | 10.3 x 7.1 inches |

| Screen size (diagonal) | 10.1 inches |
| System weight / Weight with AC adapter | 2.9/3.4 pounds |
| Category | Netbook |
The design of the 1005HA is based on the (slightly slimmer) 1008HA model. There's a tapered front lip, but the new model lacks some of the space-saving features of the 1008HA, such as the angled Ethernet jack and hidden mini-VGA port. Rather than a potentially smaller SSD drive, there's a standard 160GB HDD inside, augmented by a free 10GB online data storage subscription for backing up files to a remote server.
While slightly thicker and heavier than other recent Netbooks, it's still a vast improvement over the first few generations of mini laptops, which had a universally boxy, toylike feel. Our review unit was glossy black, which was prone to picking up fingerprints; blue is also available.
The flat, wide keyboard, similar to what we saw on the Eee PC 1008HA, is among the better Netbook keyboards we've used, and the full-size right Shift key is one of those things you don't realize is very important until it goes missing. The touch pad is demarcated by a rectangle of raised dots on the wrist rest, and works well, although we found ourselves going into the touch pad settings and jacking up the default pointer speed.
A single quick-access button above the keyboard is for disabling the touch pad (handy if you're using an external USB mouse), and Asus' different preset power profiles are accessible by hitting the FN key plus the space bar. New to this model is a software suite that acts as a software dock popping out of the top of the screen (by default, but switchable). From there, you can access functions such as screen brightness presets and media players. Most Netbook users we talk to are no-nonsense types who just want to surf the Web or send e-mail, so learning the ins and outs of a proprietary menu bar system may not be high in the list of priorities.
The 10.1-inch LED display offers a 1,024x600 native resolution, which is standard for a Netbook, although higher-end systems are starting to add 1,366x768 display options. The backlit LED allows the lid to be very thin, and also use less power than a more traditional LCD display.
| Asus Eee PC 1005HA | Average for category [Netbook] | |
| Video | VGA | VGA |
| Audio | Stereo speakers, headphone/microphone jacks | headphone/microphone jacks |
| Data | 3 USB 2.0, SD card reader | 2 USB 2.0, SD card reader |

The 1005HA offers a fairly standard set of ports and connections, lacking only the ExpressCard slot we've seen on some high-end Netbooks. We prefer to have our connections out in the open, rather than hidden behind hinged plastic doors (as in the 1008HA model), although we have to admit, the 1008's tiny, angled Ethernet jack was an impressive engineering feat.
With Intel's N280 Atom CPU, the system was, not surprisingly, on par with other current Netbooks, even those with the slightly slower N270 version of the ubiquitous Atom. We have yet to meet an Atom-powered Netbook that vastly outperformed or underperformed the pack. The basic rule of thumb is that for basic tasks such as word processing, Web surfing, and e-mail, an Atom Netbook is more than adequate, as long as you keep your expectations modest.
The real star here is the system's battery life. Asus has always had some of the longest-lived Netbooks, and the new 1005HA got an impressive 6 hours and 51 minutes in our video playback battery drain test--about 30 minutes more than our previous leader, the Eee PC 1000HE, and more than 2 hours better than the nonremovable battery in the 1008HA model.
Asus also includes its Super Hybrid Engine feature in the system, which is essentially a series of power-saving presets to further extend battery life. These are mostly power consumption tweaks one could perform individually, but it's handy to have them all in one place.
Asus covers its laptops with a standard, one-year parts-and-labor warranty, and it offers online Web-based help and a toll-free phone number. The company's support Web site has improved over the past few years, and includes easy to find driver downloads FAQs.

attractive design, easy 2 gb upgrade, amazingly fast
by magisto on July 5, 2009
Pros: the design and weight are excellent, long battery life, and simple to upgrade to 2 gb, has everything I wanted in a netbook
Cons: in the 3 days I have used it no problems other than getting used to a slightly smaller keyboard

It's so cute!!
by madneko on July 28, 2009
Pros: It's very portable and attractive, runs like a charm, keyboard is still fairly spacious, great display, also has a wonderfully large hard drive.
Cons: No optical drive, but to be expected in a netbook. Fan is a bit noisy, and battery life is about 4 hrs instead of 6 (3-cell battery version). Speakers are also a little tinny.
Summary: I love love love this computer. I haven't upgraded to the max 2GB of RAM, but since it runs so smoothly already, I'm not sure if I really ...
Summary: I love love love this computer. I haven't upgraded to the max 2GB of RAM, but since it runs so smoothly already, I'm not sure if I really need to. I'm a college student, so I mainly use the thing for surfing the net, writing papers, and watching anime online (nerd that I am). I'm a big fan of the large hard drive as well, and the monstrous iTunes so far hasn't eaten the little thing to pieces, so I can store my big fat music collection on it, and run iTunes in the background of my other programs without any hiccups.
As a music lover, though, the speakers leave something to be desired, but a good set of headphones or some other speakers (I'll connect my iHome to it sometimes for bumpin' parties XD) fixes that ^^
Also, the fan can be really, really loud >< I honestly don't mind, and it's not going ALL THE TIME, so *shrug* I guess that's a small price to pay for such a nice machine.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Light and thin. Great for on the go professionals.

Pros: nice keyboard. great display. snappy.

Summary: This is a great little machine. Light and portable. Good for stage managers who need email and google docs on the go. You may want to delete a lot of the microsoft programs right away especially the stuff you'll never use like IE and the free trial of MS office (use firefox as your browser). this machine really shouldn't run big memory hogging programs like outlook (yuck). If you need to type a doc and you have no wifi connection, I've found that word pad works great, you can save it and copy it to a google doc or open office doc later when you have your connection.
This is also a wonderful tool for blogging. Just toss it in your bag and go.
I bought the $299 best buy version so the battery is only 4 hours, but that's fine for plane trips, etc. It's also pretty darn light and thin. I get lots of positive comments on how great it looks and everyone wants to play around with it.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

great pc until the power supply dies
Pros: great battery life. Great functionality...light and portable.
Cons: owned this device for 3 weeks and the power supply dies. Called the crack asus tech support team and took 2 hours to get an RMA. Then was informed that they dont have the power supply and dont know when it will be in. asus tech support sucks.
Summary: great pc. since netbooks are new its hard to find a offbrand powersupply, got one on ebay. Once i test the new off brand power supply I'll update my ...

An over-all winner
by tinybutshiny on September 27, 2009
Pros: -flat keyboard is comfortable to use, and is only second to the keyboard of the Toshiba NB205
-tapered design is outstanding
-processor meets modest expectations
-battery life
-bright screen
-WiFi connectivity is first-rateCons: -touchpad works well, but doesn't feel as nice as more traditional touchpads
-screen doesn't lean as far back as you'd wish
-glossy screen
-voice command is a bit wonky
-Eee docking software stutters and fails to impressSummary: I'm loving my netbook. It performs very nicely with the right software installed. UTorrent delivers very well for my downloads, Google Chrome ensures speedy web-surfing, and AVG protects your ...
Summary: I'm loving my netbook. It performs very nicely with the right software installed. UTorrent delivers very well for my downloads, Google Chrome ensures speedy web-surfing, and AVG protects your system without being bloated. I think CNET has an article on netbook software here somewhere; it'd be really worth a look. I was also very pleased to find a pink colored P version of this netbook, and the 2GB RAM upgrade was quick and useful. But what I'm loving best about this little machine is its WiFi connectivity. It performs much better in this regard than my other Acer laptop.
EDIT: I found that the fan goes off really loudly when you play audio. It's not overly irritating, but it does get really loud.
I can hardly find anything to dislike about my 1005HA. The nearest thing I have to a nitpick is on the Eee docking software, which doesn't perform smoothly at all, but I won't use it often anyway. Over-all, the 1005HA is a great netbook and I'd definitely recommend it to others.

wondercomputer...amazing computer for price
by jdfuchs26 on August 31, 2009
Pros: -can't beat $375 computer
-does 95% of all regular computer apps
-gets 8+ hours of battery life (verified!)
-easy to upgrade memory (2gb max)
-attractive design and very light weightCons: -takes some time getting used to small screen (really a nonissue since people buy these computers for the size)
-ever so slight delay depending on programs being run
-fingerprints are everywhere (again a nonissue as 99% of computers do it to)Summary: For +/- $375, you cannot find a better computer. Does 95% of what my $2k HP 3.4ghz p4 dz8000 laptop can do. I can't even get 45 min ...
Summary: For +/- $375, you cannot find a better computer. Does 95% of what my $2k HP 3.4ghz p4 dz8000 laptop can do. I can't even get 45 min out of the HP (its a desktop replacement) and it runs like Hell's furnace. I've heard people complain about the heat from the ASUS but people are spoiled with today's computers. It gets warm and there is a slight hum of the fan but not as much as people cry about. Had no problems with the power brick and all the updates have come with no problem. I purchased it knowing that its small and not a super pc, but unless your running sofware to drive the space shuttle, this is more then enough. Lug around a 13lb laptop and then you will appreciate what a 2lb one feels like. Also, running the HP's 130 watt power brick required its own substation and a 2nd job to run, the ASUS is probably gona cost me 6-7 dollars to power for the year... I highly recommend this computer if your looking for a netbook.

Soooo many problems
by dnorko on August 12, 2009
Pros: I bought it a a great price from BuyDig. $369. It looks good and the keyboard is spacious.
Cons: The power cord was defective and took almost ten days to resolve. There were multiple software problems. They went unresolved even after a complete system restore as directed by ASUS tech staff. This system did not work as well as reviewed.

Summary: Aside from the battery life and the keyboard mine has been a nightmare. The power cord went caput. Multiple programs did not function: eee@vibe, voic comand, and the data sync station. After multtiple complaints to ASUS and promises they'd have a "Senior Tech" call I had to follow up on my own. They ended up advising me to do a full system restore. It didn't solve the problems. I am now trying to get it exchanded by BuyDIG. Hopefully that will be more successful than the first try. I had a Dell laptop for five years. It worked like a charm. I'd skip the ASUS.

Horrible ASUS Customer Service 10% Battery DOA rate

Pros: Great Little Netbook. Great Screen, Long battery life

Summary: I work for a company that sold 56 of these to a local school. Of the 56, 5 had bad batteries (almost a 10% failure rate). I called customer support and was emailed an RMA# plus a X-Ship form that I had to fax in before they would send the replacement batteries. Well I faxed in the form 5 times now and still have heard nothing. It was over a week ago the first time I faxed in the form. When I call the customer service number, they say they are at a differnet location than where the form was faxed to so they don't know if the form has been received. They said that they don't even have a way to call them, the only way they can communicate with them is through their "repair ticketing system". After my 3rd call I told them I needed to speak to a supervisor. They told me a supervisor would call me back in 24-48 hours. What a JOKE! It has now been over 72 hours and there has been no calls. If you try to call other Asus number they simply reroute you back to their Eee division. It's as if your fax goes into a black hole and you never hear anything again.
The Netbook itself is really nice as long as you get a working unit. If you buy this netbook make sure that you can return it to the company you purchased it from and don't have to deal with ASUS if its DOA. The distributor that we bought these from said that all DOA units have to go through ASUS so we are stuck. The distributor probably knows how horrible it is to deal with ASUS Eee PC division that they institured the policy.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: This is easily one of the best netbooks on the market, if not, the best. At 350$ retail, it's very affordable, there are many netbooks that are not near as good that soar well past the 400$ range, so you really get what you pay for. The keyboard and trackpad are both very nice. The little bumps on the trackpad offer great friction and is very responsive for moving around. The netbook itself is very stylish looking with a great black piano finish that looks very professional, however, it will get dirty easily from fingerprints, so you'll want to keep it clean!
Battery life is incredible. I drained it down all day and it went nearly 7 hours with the screen on the brightest setting, browsing internet, transfering files, chatting and e-mailing, and watching shows on YouTube. If you were to use battery conserving settings, I'm sure it would go much longer. I also like the fact that even for a 6-cell battery it doesn't stick out in the back like most other netbooks do. It still has the appearance of a 3-cell.
Processor is fast and zippy and definitely gets the job done for what a netbook does. Even 1GB of ram runs fine but I'm sure 2 would be great for it too.
All-in-all, this is the best netbook I've ever used, and I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a ergonomic friendly, long battery life, and affordable netbook.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
