The good: Good components for cost; secondary instant-on Linux OS; separate number pad.
The bad: Big, heavy, and power hungry; mixed performance; lights can't be completely shut off; no dedicated media controls.
The bottom line: The Asus G71GX-RX05 is a solid gaming-oriented desktop replacement, but with a few shortcomings that could make or break a purchasing decision.
Editors' note: This review is part of our 2009 Retail Laptop and Desktop Back-to-School roundup, covering specific fixed configurations of popular systems that can be found in retail stores.
Do you want a little more flash with your computing experience, but you're on a budget? The Asus G71GX-RX05 serves up some great components for less than $1,150 as well as a couple extras like instant processor overclocking and a whole lot of blue lights beaming from its body.
Its performance has some highs and lows and it eats power, but it is a very capable laptop for general use or as a gaming system (as long as you're running the latest BIOS update).

Asus didn't dress up this G71GX model with any graphic embellishments on the lid, instead keeping things a basic glossy black. (However, it's so glossy that your fingerprints will be all over it in a matter of seconds.) What sells this as a gaming notebook--at least as far as looks are concerned--are its blue LED lights. Beams of lights on the lid go up each side and across the middle. There is also a glowing Republic of Gamers emblem, which relates to an Asus-run gaming Web site. The lights are controllable to a degree; the side beams can be shut off entirely, but the middle beam and emblem never shut off unless the system is asleep or turned off. If you sleep in the same room as your computer, this might keep you awake at night. There are two lights at the front edge of the laptop, too.
Above the keyboard is a series of touch-sensitive controls for shutting off the touch pad (and its frame of LED lights), for quickly changing the computer's performance profile (power saving, standard, overclock), and launching a console with controls for the laptop's LED lights.
There's also a control to start up a secondary Linux-based OS called Asus Express Gate. This lets you get faster access to the Web, Skype, and IM, as well as music and photos on the laptop without waiting for Windows to boot--although we find that consumers rarely use these pre-Windows environments.
The keyboard on the G71GX is a decent size and there is a separate number pad. However, the keys make a strange, almost metallic, clacking noise and the keyboard itself shifts slightly from side to side. This doesn't really affect use, but it speaks to the build quality. Missing is a nearly standard row of media-control buttons, which is an odd omission for an entertainment-focused laptop. Function keys are clearly labeled so it makes hunting for something such as volume/mute controls a little easier. Speaking of sound, there are four speakers in this laptop, and they sound great.
The 17-inch wide-screen LCD display offers a 1,440x900 native resolution, which is standard for a screen this size at this price. It's a lower-end resolution, but again it's to be expected. The bigger problem with the G71GX's screen is that off-angle viewing is terrible. Things look great when you're sitting directly in front of the screen, but if you frequently have people viewing your screen off to the sides, they're going to have a hard time seeing what you're showing them.
| Asus G71GX-RX05 | Average for category [desktop replacement] | |
| Video | VGA, HDMI | VGA and HDMI or DisplayPort |
| Audio | four speakers, headphone/microphone jacks, SPDIF/headphone out | Stereo speakers with subwoofer, headphone/microphone jacks |

| Optical drive | DVD burner | DVD burner [high-end: Blu-ray] |
The G71GX has just about all the ports, I/O jacks, and network connections we'd expect to find on a desktop replacement at this price with one exception: there's no Bluetooth. The USB 2.0, mini-FireWire, and audio jacks are concealed under two flip-down doors, one on each side toward the back of the chassis. While this does make the body more attractive when the ports aren't in use, they're a little unsightly when opened. Of course there is the inevitability that one or both will get snapped off if you're not careful. Lastly, we appreciate it when vendors put the power and Ethernet inputs and monitor outputs on the back of desktop replacements, which is exactly what Asus did on the G71GX.
Graphics and processor performance from the Asus G71GX-RX05 was mixed. We expected more from the Core 2 Duo P8700 and 6GB of memory on our encoding, multitasking, and image-processing tests, but it underperformed against the Sony Vaio FW480J/T and its 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 processor. In real-world use we doubt you'll notice the difference. Plus, the laptop can be overclocked up to 15 percent more than the stock speed. On the flipside, though, the G71GX-RX05's graphics performance was pretty great for the money, doing well in our labs' tests.
Worth noting, however, is that out of the box this system required a BIOS update to deal with a heat issue that caused the Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M adapter to stop performing normally when it reached an operating temperature of about 81 degrees Celsius. The new BIOS fixed this problem, and thanks to the Asus system updating app that's preinstalled on the laptop, the process was painless.

The G71GX-RX05 ran for 2 hours and 11 minutes on our video playback battery drain test, using the included eight-cell battery. That's not great but is expected for a system of its caliber. Our battery drain test is fairly demanding, too, so you can expect longer life while Web surfing or doing general productivity tasks. Compared with the two other performance laptops in our 2009 retail back-to-school roundup, the Asus has high power demands. It's also not Energy Star qualified.
Asus includes a two-year, parts-and-labor warranty with the system; however, the battery is only covered for one year. The company's support Web site has improved much over the past few years, and includes easy-to-find driver downloads and manuals, along with a brief FAQ section. Retail stores offer a variety of extended warranty plans with your laptop purchase, but they're generally expensive and hard to use, so we do not recommend them.
This system is available from Best Buy only. With PC purchases after June 26, Best Buy will provide a free, full version of Windows 7 when it becomes available in October. The laptop must be running Windows Vista Home Premium, Ultimate, or Business to qualify and will receive the corresponding Windows 7 program.

Unfortunately this gaming laptop can't play games.
by Inspite on June 30, 2009
Pros: How do they sell this much performance for this price.
Cons: After the graphics card hits 82 degrees Celsius, it slows down to a crawl. I get about 2 fps in the game Crysis. It takes 10 minutes for this to happen.
Summary: The best mobile graphics card (260m). Six gigs of Ram. Big hard drive (500 Gig). Good processor (2.53). And it looks great too!

I just flashed with the beta bios. The problem has been fixed. I will now recommend this laptop to anybody. Asus made a mistake, but fixed it in a timely manor. Good job Asus!
Unfortunately you cannot play games with this gaming laptop until Asus fixes the problem. I am sure they are working hard on a solution, but this is a black eye for them.

Summary: The ASUS brand name attracted me to the laptop. I always choose ASUS motherboards, when building a desktop computer. The bios problem will solved next week.A common problem with any computer that uses a high end graphics card is heat. I have a 4yr old dell laptop with a high end graphics card. The laptop became so hot when I played Oblivion, it was burning my legs! The solution was simple, a laptop cooling fan was the answer. There wasn't any more heating issues. When I setup the Asus g71 an set it on my cooling fan, like i do with my dell , I set the resolution to
The pros of the laptop should read : Excellent configuration for value priced gaming laptop Asus brand name. A solid well build machine.
1440x900 set the antialising to 8 samples and set the anisotropic filtering to 8 samples also. and played Fallout 3 all day. ( at least 12 hours) There were no error messages and no heat problems at all.

This is a great alternative to a high end gaming laptop
by zacharyk on November 8, 2009
Pros: Very powerful,very attractive.
I was first going to buy the Alienware(R)g71x.$2000 for a machine that is nearly twice the price and half the power as the asus g71x did.If your on a 1500 budget and you want a powerful gaming machine this is the choiceCons: It gets hot at times. Don't keep the machine or the charger in contact with your body. I learned that the hard way. It burned me and gave me a blister.
Also take into account that this thing is really heavy.Summary: I still think that this is a great gaming laptop starter

Summary: i actually just bought the laptop yesterday but i've done quite a few things on it already and i haven't had any issues. i installed a few large programs/games, played wow, used the webcam to take some hilarious pictures, on top of just regular use (word processing, facebook, etc). the only thing i haven't done on it really is watched a movie. the altec lansing speakers sound great, especially for a laptop, and i don't have any complaints about it. btw, the gpu glitch that everyone keeps mentioning is fixed, so happy gaming!

2- Generous GPU memory - Plays ANY MMO out there
3- Build/Quality - It's made VERY well
4- Memory - 6GB of memory
5- Keyboard is nice and firmCons: 1- HEAVY - Get ready to flex, this TANK weighs a ton
2- LIGHTS - Some lights is cool, too much is cheap looking
3- Batter life- To be expected. I get about 1.5 hours tops

Summary: Take a proven company like Asus, add in the latest hardware and GPU, mix it in a manufacturing plant, deduct at least a thousand dollars, and what do you get? You get a heck of a gaming rig for a fraction of the cost. You can't go wrong with this laptop. It is a desktop replacement, but mobile enough to take on trips. The wonderful graphics processor and memory really immerse you in the gaming experience. Frame rates are consistent, and graphics are crisp. The memory and processing power provides a zippy Windows environment. The screen real estate is nice and versatile for any application you can throw at it.
The new Macbook Pro has a fraction of this hardware, and cost way more. You can't say Asus is a no name company compared to Apple either....Asus is a leading hardware provider with a long and excellent history in both quality and customer service. Oh, speaking of customer service....it's US based. WOW! -
An Overall Rare Gaming Experience
by bigscarytiger24 on August 15, 2009
Pros: GTX 260M Cuda Card, Plays Crysis and Crysis Warhead real well. Large hard drive, 6 gigs of ram, good intel processor, overclockable using Turbogear utility.
Cons: Loud CD Drive, and occasionally loud hard drive. Gets hot, weighs in a 9.5 lbs. Good luck finding one at your local Bestbuy.

Summary: This computer was for long time considered my dream computer. I waited one month and one week. I waited for decent blog, forum, and bestbuy reviews to popup online. In that time it took, i couldn't get one because Bestbuy stocks one to three per truckload. Bought Crysis Maximum Edition, plays both on High at 30 fps. Plays The Sims 3 at 40 to 60 fps. Flight Simulator X scores an excellent 35 to 50 fps. If you're in a quiet setting you will hear the cd drive working and most likely the hard drive. Updated bios when going into Windows update. Waiting for Q4 2009 gaming season, some decent first person shooters are coming out. Was $1,150, now $1,300, but well worth the $150, has Windows 7 upgrade program, is compatible, never mind what blogs say. Very heavy, but you sacrifice little for a lot. The 6 gigs of ram is nothing what i'm used to, with most of my previous computers having 2 gigs. Running Crysis and internet with mutiple tabs open at the same time. If you wondering about overclocking. It comes with Asus Turbo Gear Extreme. Downloaded CPUid hardware monitor and then overclocked it 15% and got 2.883 GHz per core. Get this Computer!!!
Some models have system restore issues, go into System Restore and turn it off and you won't lose hard drive space. Ran The Orange Box, played Portal on ultra high at 60 fps, all half life at ultra high 55+ fps, Team Fortress 2, don't even ask. Get this computer if you know what's good for you. If you can't get this computer, get the white G51, the P7350 isn't a bad thing and 4 gigs. Will still run Crysis and anything else you throw at it.

GREAT SPECS - small flaws
Pros: 6gb ram, 1gb video, 17", 500gb hd, wifi n, 64bit vista, seperate linux boot button.
Cons: poor battery life. 8-cell runs for around 2 hours. BIOS flaw in GPU that causes shutdown of the graphics proccessor itself. ASUS FIXED THIS THROUGH AN ONLINE DOWNLOAD TO UPDATE BIOS. needs more effecient battery life.

Summary: I really regret saying I have only seen a floor model at best buy even played around on it a bit. runs smooth. Can quickly boot linux for media use (saves battery a bit) with a press of a button. aother on button is located on the comp for windows boot. has lots of blue LED lighting on comp but it consumes some bat life if overused. mostly grphics card and cooling system will eat battery life it needs a HIGH CAPACITY BATTERY.... Maybe make a spare battery bay or even a battery that mounts on the back and plugs into power jack. Asus should also make a power manager that can run the graphics card at 1/2 power and shut down fans to conserve battery power. Need various Asus themes for vista OS (linux???) I have owned and used a Toshiba laptop, HP desktop, IBM laptop and an old AST laptop. and now i find this treasure. I have always wanted an alienware bu this computer surely will fill my needy void for a nice gaming laptop....for now.
I've never ran vista or linux before so they will be new to me ( i run xp NOT Mac) I am really considering making a double boot for the normal start up for XP/7(when it releases I get it free!) so the comp will really have 3 OS on it. I am preparing to enter my freshman year in college and major in computer science with a csis emphasis.(and maybe a few certifications on the side like microsoft,A+,CCNP....) and THIS COMPUTER BY FAR CAN TAKE ON ANY GAME,PROGRAM,MOVIE, OR WORK WITH EASE. I will be buying mine next friday on Tax Holiday!!! CAn't Wait!!! -
Great for running Photoshop.
Pros: Fast, high performance .
Cons: Heavy, battery only good for two hours.
Summary: Great value for someone who runs Photoshop.
