The good: Borrows some of the best design features of the more expensive XPS line; built-in media remote control.
The bad: Bulkier than the 15-inch XPS model; just under the wire for new Centrino 2 chips.
The bottom line: Dell's first release from its new Studio line, the Studio 15, sits between the Inspiron and XPS lines and offers a good mix of features for the price, but we'd be tempted to save up a few extra dollars for a thinner, lighter XPS.
Parsing the intended markets for Dell's ever-shifting in-house brand names requires a bit of tea-leaf reading, although it's been easier of late, with the company stripping down its consumer brands to just the Inspiron and XPS lines. Now the company is adding a new line between the budget Inspiron and the high-end XPS. The new Studio line, as personified by the $1,250 15-inch Studio 15, has the same tapered shape, slot-loading optical drive, and rounded hinge as the Dell XPS M1530, but a similarly configured Studio system costs roughly $300 less than a similarly outfitted XPS.
The trade-off is mostly in size and finish. Even though it has a similar look, the Studio laptop is about 25 percent thicker and slightly heavier than its more upscale XPS cousin, with plastic accents instead of metal. We'd be tempted to toss in the extra $300 for the brushed-metal wrist rest and slimmer design of the XPS, but the Studio line does offer personalization options (lots of colors and graphic imprints) beyond what's available for Dell's other laptops, along with a slot-loading optical drive and credit-card-style media remote for about $200 more than a similarly configured Inspiron 1525 (not including discrete graphics, which are not available on the 1525).

While clearly inspired by the popular XPS M1530, the Studio 15 has a more angular look, with its large side hinges curving the screen down at a sharp angle; the XPS presents a more rounded look. At 6 pounds, it's a bit heavy to tote around every day, but still at the lower end of the 15-inch scale, around 6 pounds. Our early review unit had a matte midnight blue lid, but there are a variety of color options. We've also seen some leaked shots online of several artistic designs motifs that should be available in the future, which we've previously covered on Crave.
The Studio 15 follows Dell's recent, and welcome, trend of putting HDMI outputs and touch-sensitive control buttons on just about every laptop--you can also get those on even the cheapest Inspiron 15-inch. Like the XPS 1530, it has a slot-loading optical drive and an Express Card slot that doubles as a holder for a credit-card-style media remote.
Also like the XPS M1530, the Studio 15 has a 15.4-inch LED backlit display with a native resolution of 1,440x900, which is standard for higher-end midsize laptops. Dell's cheaper Inspiron 1525 has a 1,280x800 display, but the extra screen real estate at the higher resolution in the Studio 15 makes for a much less cluttered desktop. We prefer these newer LED displays (over older LCD models lit by a fluorescent lamp) because of their lighter weight, brighter whites, and lower power consumption.

Intel's 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 CPU is the current default for mainstream performance, and the Dell Studio 15 easily outperformed Dell's 14- and 15-inch Inspirons with slower 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 processors, as well as the most recent XPS 1530 we looked at, which had an older 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7500. But for most typical tasks, including Web surfing, working on Office documents, media playback, etc., any of these CPUs would be more than adequate. We'd expect new CPUs from Intel's Centrino 2 refresh later in the summer.
While it's not the top of the video card food chain, the 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD3400 will provide for some basic gaming muscle. We got around 17 frames per second on Unreal Tournament III at 1,280x800. Tweaking the settings and turning down the detail level should get more playable frame rates in the mid-20s, but this system is targeted more at creative types, not hard-core gamers.
The Studio 15 ran for 2 hours and 46 minutes on our video playback battery drain test, using the included six-cell battery. That's reasonable for a midsize laptops, and our battery drain test is especially grueling, so you can expect longer life from casual Web surfing and office use--we got more than 3 hours out of it in anecdotal use.
Dell includes an industry-standard one-year parts-and-labor warranty with the system, which includes extra features such as 3GB of online backup storage space though Dell's DataSafe program. Support is accessible through a 24-7 toll-free phone line, and an extensive online knowledge base and driver downloads.

Very Impressive Build Quality
by BeaverFan1987 on September 27, 2008
Pros: 1. LED Screen
2. Backlit keyboard
3. Price
4. Performance
5. Included software is actually a bonus this time
6. No bloatware that robs system performance
7. Battery Life
8. HDMI port
9. Build Quality
11. Temperatures are very goodCons: 1. The weight is still on the heavy side at 6LB.
2. Centrino 2 platform with the ability to switch video cards to save power would be nice.
3. More video card options.
4. They should give all the models the express slot remote.Summary: First off I have never really been that impressed with dell's line. they have always just been a cheap alternative. I recently got an XPS 1330 from the dell ...
Summary: First off I have never really been that impressed with dell's line. they have always just been a cheap alternative. I recently got an XPS 1330 from the dell outlet. This was nice, however, the build quality was cheap. There was a bump above the speaker and the hinge looked as if it was going to come apart.
Recently I bought the Studio 15 from the Dell outlet for a heck of a deal $539 (anybody looking at these should look at the outlet first). Now I was not expecting much, but when I opened it up I was impressed by the build quality. No bumps, and to my surprise it didn't feel cheap. This is not something I expect from a dell.
So after a few days of use I can honestly say this is a 5 star deal. I would not pay over 1,000 for it, but there are few notebooks in which I would. Dell really listened to the people and added features such as the backlit keyboard, better hinges, more color options, and much much more.
I was even impressed with the included software. I usualy do a clean install on most notebooks I receive, but the Dell studio 15 was an exception. They have a nice dock feature at the top and include the google sidebar. Also to my surprise there was no extra bloatware, and the overall system memory usage was around 800MB which for Vista is reasonable.
I only had 250 words for pro's so here is an expanded version.
All in all the pro's are:
1. LED Screen (Get this it looks amazing)
2. Backlit keyboard (A very cool feature)
3. Price (Again look for coupon codes and Outlet deals)
4. Performance (This is not a gaming machine, but for the rest of us its perfect)
5. Included software is actually a bonus this time
6. No bloatware that robs system performance
7. Battery Life (I get 3 and a half hours surfing the internet with a 6 cell)
8. HDMI port (Very nice if you have an HD TV) Make sure to get the 3450 if you plan on watching High Def movies on this.
9. Build Quality (I have always been an IBM guy for quality but this is pretty good)
10. Touch buttons and attention to detail greatly appreciated.
11. Temperatures are very good
The bottom line is that this is a great system, that offers many great features and a wide variety of options. If you are in the market for a laptop that will be used ins school, work, or even a personal Home PC that doesn't break the bank this guy is for you. If you can find one for under $800 with all the bonus features you would be hard pressed to find a better laptop.
I would recommend the LED display, backlit keyboard, 3450 video, and 3GB of memory.
I recommend the 3450 video card, because it is really a great card for vista, and offers enhanced HD video playback. Basically it off loads the work from the CPU to the GPU. Also it can play many of the older games such as Warcraft III, CIV IV, and many others.
Also the slot load drive has been greatly improved, and doesn't make the terrible grinding noise like the xps 1330 I had.
My system..
Core 2 2.0 Ghz
3GB memroy
ATI 3450
LED display
Backlit keyboard
6 cell battery
DVD burner
Intel Wireless
Bluetooth
For cooupon codes go to notebookreview.com or search google for outlet coupon codes or dell coupon codes.
There are so many deals on these and it shouldn't be that hard to find a similarly specked noteboook.
Note: For around 900 I saw a similar model with a blue-ray drive at dell outlet.4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: This is an outstanding value, don't let people in the forums fool you, the ATI Mobility 3450 is a fantastic card it can play COD4 High settings very well. Do not buy this computer if you must have speakers, because they are the worst, no joke. As for looks this thing will rival a Macbook pro maybe even surpass it.
The slot-loading drive takes a little getting used to, at first I was trying to be gentle and place the disc in but you have to push it in or it will spit it out. Overall its Awesome (except for the speakers).2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

ideal for multitasking

Pros: twin duo :T9300 (2.5GHz, 6MB Cache, 800 MHz FSB) + 4GB RAM
Cons: limited graphics, dull interiors, bulky, external sound not good compared to XPS
Summary: Hi all.

i'm vivek from india.
couple of weeks back i've got dell studio15 laptop.Based on this 2 weeks , notebook is found to be good for multi-tasking (i've played mostwanted & race driver grid while running a virus scan in background it seems the game has not got stuck at any point).it may be coz of the combinaton of intel C2D T9300 2.5GHz, 6MB Cache, 800 MHz FSB + 4GB of ram.To be honest enough the studio15 has dull interior looks, poor sound & lacked innovation when compared to quosmio. but sound is good in headphones when heard with creative audigy s/w or along with Creative sound card if you have purchased while customizing your laptop.BACKLIT keyboard is another cool feature in studio 15.Another major drawback is still the studio15 drivers are not released in XP platform. I prefer XP in my notebook than vista.
if you plan for a normal config of 2 or 3 gb ram with 2.1 ghz of processor. i strogly recommed you guys to go for TOSHIBA quosmio or any other with XP as operating system coz for running vista needs min of 1gb ramUpdated
if you get a dell studio 15 with 2.3 ghz or more along with 4gb ram....it rocks....and can rival any piece that we say as notebook.
in india as for studio15 is huge hit...to be frank enough XPS has the label for gaming. but i say for $1100-$1300 nothing can match STUDIO 15 in performance with T9300/T9500 processor + 4 GB ram. but we cannot get XPS with advanced processor for that cost.
believe me ,Both XPS & studio 15 are same. only change is handling charges and body resemle to inspiron and has a dull look.
one of my frenz who got xps1530 for $1350
had
intel c2d 2.0ghz processor + 3 gb ram.
but i got Studio15 (1530)with following
intel c2d 2.5ghz processor + 4 gb ram + backlit keyboard for same price..
which is better ...? dont be foolded enough by these forums.
these forums take 2.0ghz & 2gb ram as prototype for studio 15 and made all comparisons
but once you customize, you will come to know which is better.
but look doesnt matter.only performance matters.no piece of notebooks can match studio15 in performace in such lower rates.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: From day one, the fan goes on and stays on full blast 90% of the time. It is super loud and annoying and is an energy sucker. Dell product support just gives me the run around when addressing this problem and tell me that nothing is wrong. Additionaly, about every other day, the cursor freezes and I have to take out the battery and hold in the power button for a minute to discharge the built up static electricity that caused the cursor to freeze. I paid and arm and a leg for this computer and Dell insists that nothing is wrong with the computer because nothing comes up wrong after running their diagnostic test. Dealing with Dell has been a joke. The level of frustration in talking to their customer support is off the charts. This computer is a piece of crap. I used to have a Dell Inspiron for 5 years and had no problems with it until the DC jack became disconnected from the mother board, causing me to have a buy this computer. Worst mistake of my life. I can't believe how expensive this thing was and how I've had nothing but problems with it. Of course, I have spent hours on the phone with Dell support. I can't tell you how fun that is. I will NEVER buy another DELL computer and I urge everyone reading this to do the same. Seriously, I am not one to complain either but this thing is a joke and so is Dell.
