Dell XPS 17 3D price range: $1,269.99

The good: The Dell XPS 17 3D is a sharp-looking desktop replacement that can handle 3D content, as well as output 3D movies and games to a compatible 3DTV. Highly configurable, the more-expensive options are powerful indeed.
The bad: Some wonky stereoscopic 3D issues make this less plug-and-play than a 3DTV, and the 17-inch version of the XPS has not gotten the same slim makeover the 15-inch version has.
The bottom line: Dell's XPS 17 3D is for those who want a powerful media and gaming 17-inch laptop, but in a more aesthetically upscale package than offered by Dell's Alienware brand. The stereoscopic 3D is gimmicky, but a certain breed of PC gamer will love it.
Dell's sometimes-confusing array of in-house consumer brands has been thankfully whittled down to three, and there's a clear enough delineation between them to make choosing a Dell laptop (or at least a starting point) a simple equation. The mainstream Inspiron brand hits the lowest end of the price spectrum, with plastic bodies and a surprisingly wide range of component options; the premium-priced Alienware brand is for Mountain-Dew-chugging gamers, with aesthetic palates that lag behind their budgets. In the middle is the XPS line, which takes some of the same higher-end components available from the other two lines, adds new and different options, and wraps the entire system up in an appealing metal-clad shell.
The upscale-looking XPS 17 3D is a relatively recent variation on the brand, taking the current 2011 17-inch XPS, with its second-gen Intel Core i-series processors, and adding stereoscopic 3D support via Nvidia's 3D Vision platform (which is really the standard for PC-based 3D). You can also send the signal to a 3DTV via HDMI and watch video or play PC games in 3D--a potential draw for fans of PC-only games such as StarCraft II.

HP Envy 3D review
Our XPS 17 3D rang up at $2,054, but the starting price for a 3D version is $1,199 (non-3D XPS 17 models can be configured down to $899). While it's actually very hard to configure a laptop to cost more than $2,000 these days, our expensive review unit included an Intel Core i7-2630QM processor, 8GB of RAM, a full-HD 1080p screen, Nvidia's GeForce GT 555M GPU, a Blu-ray writer, and 1TB of hard-drive space.
That's probably more computer than anyone needs, but a more reasonable build will get you up and running for under $1,500, and still be a killer gaming/multimedia/3D rig that won't make your apartment look like a dorm room.

With a brushed-metal design and a three-tone black/gray/silver color scheme, the 17-inch version of the Dell XPS is nearly identical to the smaller 15-inch XPS, which we last reviewed in March 2011. It's buttoned-down for a multimedia machine, but wouldn't look out of place in an upscale den or living room.
This is, however, a totally different design than the very recent XPS 15z, a slimmer re-imagining of the XPS line, which has a thinner body, slot-loading optical drive, and large speaker grills on either side of the keyboard. The 15z is a much cleaner, nicer look overall, and we may someday see those design cues make their way to the XPS 17, but for now, this is still a thick, chunky laptop, but not an unattractive one.
Dell's standard onscreen dock--a quick-launch collection of apps and menus--has gotten a major overhaul this year. Instead of being pinned to the top (or optionally, the bottom) of the screen, it now sits about one-quarter of the way up, with large, art-filled tiles for the different categories, including music, games, and video. It's called the Dell Stage, and you can change the size or content of the tiles, or turn the entire thing off. As far as docklike software packages go, this is one of the nicer-looking ones we've seen.
As a 3D-compatible laptop, the XPS 17 3D can be used to view stereoscopic content, including photos, videos, and games, using a pair of included Nvidia 3D Vision glasses (our review unit didn't actually include them, but we had an extra pair lying around; additional pairs run about $100). The nice part about PC-based 3D is that almost any PC game can be played in 3D mode, because the 3D Vision system simply presents the 3D data generated by the game itself; unlike console games, you don't need a specially coded stereoscopic 3D version.
The XPS 17 3D also works with Nvidia's 3DTV Play software, which lets you connect the HDMI output from the laptop into an HDMI input on a 3DTV and view 3D content on the larger screen. We had to go and find the Nvidia software on our own--it oddly wasn't preinstalled, and you should note that Nvidia charges $39 for that software, which also has a 14-day free trial.
Once we got the 3DTV Play software up and running, we were able to play PC games via the XPS 17 on a big-screen Samsung 3DTV. But, this comes with two important caveats. Resolution on 3DTV Play game content is limited to 720p, and there was a small amount of lag in the signal. We found Portal, our test 3D game, still playable, but faster-paced games may suffer with this kind of lag.
The display on the XPS 17 3D has a full HD 1,920x1080-pixel resolution, which is what we'd expect from a high-end desktop replacement. Screen images were bright and clear, and off-axis viewing was above average, but the very glossy screen also picked up a lot of glare. The built-in JBL-branded speakers are loud and reasonably deep, but you'll still want to hook up some headphones or external speakers, depending on what you're playing and how many people are watching.
| Dell XPS 17 3D | Average for category [desktop replacement] | |
|---|---|---|
| Video | HDMI, Mini DisplayPort | VGA plus HDMI or DisplayPort |
| Audio | Stereo speakers with subwoofer, headphone (2x)/microphone jacks. | Stereo speakers with subwoofer, headphone/microphone jacks. |

| Networking | Ethernet, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth | Ethernet, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth |
| Optical drive | Blu-ray burner | DVD burner, optional Blu-ray player |
This is one of the few laptops we've seen that bothers to include a Blu-ray burning drive. Most are simply Blu-ray players that also burn DVDs. More-common BD/DVD-R drives are also available, and trading down to a simple DVD-only drive will knock $175 off the price.
While our XPS 17 3D crossed the $2,000 mark, with its high-powered quad-core CPU and 1TB of hard-drive space, you can get it down to as little as $1,199. That config includes a dual-core Intel Core i5 CPU, and half the hard-drive space and RAM (4GB and 500GB, respectively).
As you might expect, the 2.0GHz Intel Core i7-2630QM powering our XPS 17 3D was an impressive performer. It was evenly matched with Acer's 18-inch Aspire 8950G, which had the same CPU, and both were much faster than high-end desktop replacements with last year's Intel Core i-series CPUs (such as the HP Envy 17 3D, not yet available with a 2011 Intel quad-core CPU, although it's expected any time now).
For gaming, the Nvidia GeForce GT555M is at the high end of Nvidia's mainstream GPUs (but is behind the GTX series, including the new GTX 580M). We ran our old Unreal Tournament III benchmark at 1,440x900 pixels and got 113.1 frames per second. On a more challenging test, we ran Street Fighter IV at 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution and got 33.5 frames per second.
One of the most extreme current PC games, The Witcher 2, was playable at low to medium settings, which is about what we'd expect, even from a high-powered gaming laptop. Games such as that, and Dragon Age 2, both looked decent in stereoscopic 3D, but your mileage may vary depending on the game. In most cases, you'll get an onscreen pop-up with info about how well the Nvidia 3D Vision system will handle any particular game.

A hulking desktop replacement laptop isn't really meant to spend much time away from a wall outlet, so when we get battery life scores of 90 minutes or less, it's disappointing, but not totally unexpected. In this case, however, the Dell XPS 17 3D ran for 3 hours and 6 minutes on our video playback battery drain test. That's downright impressive for a gaming laptop, although your time may be lessened by heavy game-playing or use of 3D. HP's 17-inch 3D Envy laptop (with an older 2010 Intel CPU) ran for just over an hour on the same test.
The XPS 17 3D comes with a single year of what Dell calls "Premium Hardware Service," which includes in-home service. That single year seems thin for a $2,000 computer. An extension to three years is available for $229, and adding accidental damage protection for the same three years is $90. Dell's Web site offers 24-7 toll-free phone service and Web support, including software drivers, documentation, and FAQs that are easy to find.

Excellent laptop for those who've had bad laptops
by Soxwin on June 30, 2011
Pros: Sharp,Clear 1080p screen
Excellent JBL audio system
3D is very good for most games and movies.
Keyboard not tiring to the hands.
Sleek attractive design.
Fast processor.
Air vented on the side.Cons: Runs hot when playing games (expected)

Hope this is a useful review. I haven't had the laptop for long and it isn't a top of the line configuration. I have an I5 processor, 1GB video card, no back-lit keyboard, built in TV tuner, no cluttering software extras), pretty basic.
I would suggest that if you do decide to give this laptop a try, to find a coupon discount site such as logicbuy.com. A site like this will give you coupon codes that can be used on the purchase that can give a significant discount to the product offered! I mention this because one I wasnt knowledgeable about this and secondly, after the fact Dell will not offer the same discount as they do not price match! This all said, a near basic configuration of this excellent laptop can be purchased with use of discounting for near $1,300.00! Compared to fully configured of over $2,500!
now about the computer. Ill be quick.
If you love movies. This is an excellent screen. Sharp, vibrant and crystal clear. No anomalies. Contrast and brightness give very good viewing pleasure. It makes the movie much more enjoyable. Best screen iv'e seen on a laptop!
The audio by JBL is great, it is loud enough to be heard in a large room and with an option Soundblaster added has great mimic effects i.e. Concert, Hall,..etc)
3D is while very good can be after long periods of use tiresome and for that reason I use it sparingly.
The keyboard has a very nice feel and nice bounce as you type. I would recommend the back-lit keyboard as this keyboard has dark keys and are hard to see in rooms with not much light.
The design is very attractive with a smooth outer shell. it doesnt feel overly heavy. and is balanced in the hands. I never felt like I was going to drop it because of it leaning from heavier components to one side or the other. I was able to hold this computer in my palm for a good amount of time without any difficulty.
The processor that I got with mine was an I5. It moves very fluid webpage to webpage. It boots very fast with Windows 7 installed. Going to anything in the hard drive is brought up very speedily.
One of the reasons I purchased this laptop was that my old HP burned out. If you do a search on HP laptops, there is a problem with many of them burning out their heatsinks and damaging the motherboard. Thus making my computer unusable! And HP says thanks for the cash!
Anyway, I really like that someone at Dell was thinking and said 'Hey?? Our laptops run hot! Why don't we vent it on the side so it doesn't burn out!' Every laptop should be made this way! Though it does run hot because of the processor and to a greater extent the video card! But it is never so hot as to burn me or not be able to touch the area! Though if I had some french fries they definitely could stay warm!
What i didn't like about this machine is very minor. The computer runs hot when driving video or video games. But otherwise its a strong blower and the laptop doesn't seemed 'stressed' when the blower comes on! Lastly, the 3D viewing while very good is tiresome and as often repeated wearing expensive glasses is just as tiresome.
I should have mentioned earlier but the glasses are an extra $90.00 on top of cost. If you want the 3D screen you have to purchase the glasses. Otherwise I think you'll be very happy with this laptop.
I hope this helps someone considering this laptop or for comparison.
Best to you all!4 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

FIRST LAPTOP EVER OWNED! LOVE IT!

Pros: 3D
Battery Life
Just Plain CoolCons: Contrary to what many long-time laptop owners have said, I don't find the weight to be a problem.

Summary: I LOVE THIS COMPUTER! This is my first PC in 8 years (I own an older PC, an iMac 24 and this one) and my first laptop EVER...and this was SUCH a good choice!
I am not technical and will not attempt to leave a technical review. All I know is what I like and THIS I like! With my not being technical, I was concerned that I would have a problem and not be able to fix it and not be able to get help from Dell. Wrong! I accidentally uploaded a driver from Nvidia that made the DVD player go wacky (it was not compatible with that 3D driver). I called Dell and they fixed the problem via remote control. It was a long process, but painless. Prior to my own error, the computer ran like a charm...and since they fixed it, it continues to run well. They even called back today to make sure everything was going well.
The 3D is WONDERFUL! I had gotten this computer to eventually hand off to my teenage son, but, to be honest, I am enjoying the 3D more than he is :-). The movies are sooooo relaxing. IMAX Under the Sea with Jim Carrey was PERFECT for this technology. In fact, I am finding that many of the 3D movies pertain to aquatic life; 3D seems to be a perfect medium to showcase water and sealife!
My Dell salesperson was PERFECT, too (I ordered directly from Dell). Overall, I have had a wonderful, painless experience.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

A large format laptop almost ideal for gaming.
by Underhill_ on January 13, 2012
Pros: Decent screen, best sound I've heard on a laptop, fast enough to play anything on the market well.
Cons: Slides around a bit more than I like on my desk. Could use better 'feet'. Can't use the dual drives in RAID format.

Great performance but buyer beware (see cons about RAM)
by rte988787 on September 29, 2011
Pros: 2nd generation Intel processors (Sandy Bridge) and chipset, blazing fast DDR3 RAM speeds and a great 1080p display. JBL speakers sound amazing and the laptop even has a mini-subwoofer! Lots of USB ports. Two internal hard drives. Excellent cooling fan.
Cons: Dell sells the latop as being able to scale up to 16 GB of RAM. However, unless you buy all 16 GB at time of purchase, you only get 2 x SODIMM slots on the motherboard and your laptop can only go to 8 GB RAM!!! I had to fight with Dell to get this resolv

Summary: After fighting with dell to get the SODIMM slot issue resolved, I am pleased with the laptop. I run VMware Workstation with 3-4 VMs running simultaneously along with MS Outlook, IE 8 and other apps all at the same time. It has enough performance and RAM to handle everything and it makes my work day much more pleasant. I love listening to my iTunes over the JBL speakers. Only time I don't like it is when I have to lug it around at the airport as its very heavy.

Great Laptop Despite USB3.0Defect - Super Dell Service
by daehttub2000 on August 3, 2011
Pros: 1) Beautiful ergonomic design with FULL backlit keyboard, large touchpad and brilliant 17" screen. 2) Large battery pack lifts laptop off table to assist with cooling air flow. 3) Amazing pricepoint at Dell.com. 4) Unbelievable pricepoint ~$800 at Dell
Cons: 1) USB 3.0 defect required 2 in-house repair attempts and now a complete laptop replacement from Dell. I use backup and redundant systems so this didn't put me out as much as it would others. 2) Left side of laptop is a space heater so I did add a lap

Summary: Once the USB 3.0 defect is fixed, this will be a 5 star laptop. Unbeatable at the price point. Unbelievable at the Dell Outlet price point (~$800). Dell service is terrific so if you are patient, they will get it fixed right. You won't find this much in a laptop at the price anywhere else. This if the first time I've had a quality issue with Dell so I hope this is just a temporary stumble. At least their service response is top notch. My replacement Dell is actually an upgrade (faster I7, more memory, larger hard drive. I can't complain.
PRO: Forgot to mention that the JBL audio with the subwoofer is outstanding. CON: It only comes with Windows 7 that generates all sort of error messages for Norton 360 Premier and other applications.

Avatar and Tron look great in 3D and it's cool to play some games in 3D though you don't want to play them all in 3d. Empire: Total War, for instance was difficult because I had trouble knowing where exactly to click and drag when moving units. However it's cool to see some games in 3D like Torchlight that are button mashers. I'm looking forward to playing more 3D games that were designed with 3D in mind.
