The good: Solid metal construction; full ExpressCard/54 slot; big keyboard.
The bad: Odd resolution loses a few pixels; no mobile-broadband options (yet); awkward mouse button placement.
The bottom line: HP offers a premium version of its plastic Mini 1000 while keeping the price down, making the Mini 2140 the Netbook to beat.
Editors' note: The HP Mini 2140 has been replaced by a new model, the HP Mini 5101. Read the review here.
Even though the HP Mini 1000 is only a few months old, Hewlett-Packard was actually an early player in the Netbook field. The company's business system side came up with the Mini-Note 2133 in spring 2008, with a solid, brushed-metal chassis and a nearly full-size keyboard. Unfortunately, this predated Intel's Atom CPU, and rather than using the Celeron processor that came with the very first Netbooks, HP went with an underpowered Via C7-M, which pretty much killed any chance it had of becoming a mainstream product.
Now that the plastic-clad, Atom-powered consumer version has become a hit, HP's business side is taking another crack at the Netbook market with a radically updated version, the $499 HP Mini 2140.
It keeps the aluminum construction and big keyboard, but updates the components to an Intel Atom CPU, and adds an accelerometer for the hard drive, and a full ExpressCard/54 slot--a Netbook first (Lenovo's S10 has a smaller Express Card/34 slot).
Thanks to those added features--and some concerns about the added weight aside--the 2140 is currently our favorite Netbook less than $500.
| Price as reviewed / Starting price | $499 |
| Processor | 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 |
| Memory | 1GB, 800MHz DDR2 |
| Hard drive | 160GB 5,400rpm |
| Chipset | Mobile Intel 945GSE |
| Graphics | Intel GMA 950 (integrated) |
| Operating system | Windows XP Home Edition SP2 |

| Height | 1.1 inches |
| Screen size (diagonal) | 10.1 inches |
| System weight / Weight with AC adapter | 3.0/3.8 pounds |
| Category | Netbook |
The HP Mini 2140 shares the same basic silhouette as the earlier Mini 1000 and Mini-Note 2133 systems from HP. Because it has an aluminum case, like the 2133, it's a half-pound heavier than the plastic Mini 1000; it's a trade-off that may be worth it, however, as the metallic Mini 2140 feels as if it'll stand up to the rigors of the road better than a plastic Netbook.
The biggest selling point for HP's Netbooks has always been the fantastic keyboard, which HP claims is 92-percent of the size of a full-size laptop keyboard. Other Netbooks have been plagued by tiny Chiclet-like keys, which make typing a pain and typos plentiful. By expanding the keyboard right to the edges of the system, HP is able to fit bigger keys into the tray than other Netbooks (and even ultraportable laptops). The result is a comfortable typing experience that takes a tiny bit of adjustment (as the keys are very close together), but one that is, thus far, our favorite on a sub-12-inch notebook.
The touch pad has an unusual shape, stretched into a letterbox-like wide rectangle and the mouse buttons have been moved to the left and right sides of the touch pad. This permits the system to have a minimal amount of wasted wrist-rest space, but it's a somewhat awkward compromise, especially if you do a lot of vertical scrolling or right-clicking.
The 10.1-inch wide-screen LED display has an unusual 1,024x576 native resolution, which is a few pixels shy of the 1,024x600 we typically see in Netbooks. The end result is largely unnoticeable, but a Windows XP pop-up window expressed concern that we weren't running at a standard resolution.
| HP Mini 2140 | Average for category [netbook] | |
| Video | VGA | VGA |
| Audio | headphone/microphone jacks, stereo speakers | headphone/microphone jacks, stereo speakers |
| Data | 2 USB 2.0, SD card reader | 2 USB 2.0, SD card reader |
| Expansion | ExpressCard/54 | None |
| Networking | Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth | Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth |
| Optical drive | None | None |
Besides its big keyboard, the Mini 2140 has one major selling point that no other Netbook currently offers: a full ExpressCard/54 slot. Lenovo's S10 has a half-size ExpressCard/34 slot, but there are fewer options for add-on peripherals in that size. We rarely find that we actually need an ExpressCard slot for anything, but some rely on them for mobile broadband modems, memory-card readers, or even TV tuners.
HP offers a handful of fixed-configuration versions of the 2140, but we're perfectly happy with the basic $499 model, which has an Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 160GB hard drive. For $50 more, a smart upgrade might be an identical version with 2GB of RAM, but that comes with Windows Vista Basic. Adding an XP "downgrade" to that model adds another $80 onto that (but also includes a faster 7,200rpm hard drive).
Intel's single-core 1.6GHz Atom CPU offers enough computing power for the basic tasks for which Netbooks are designed--namely Web surfing, working on documents, and some basic multimedia playback. A dual-core ultraportable, such as Lenovo's U110 was clearly faster, especially when multitasking, but the Mini 2140 offered better performance than Sony's new Atom-powered
The Mini 2140 ran for 3 hours and 11 minutes on our video-playback battery-drain test, using a six-cell battery. That battery sticks out from the back of the system somewhat, and the basic three-cell battery was only about 35 minutes shy, so you'll have to decide between longer life and easier portability.
HP includes an industry-standard, one-year, parts-and-labor warranty with the system. Support is accessible through a 24-7 toll-free phone line, an online knowledge base, and driver downloads.

This is a GREAT sub-notebook!
by jonnybrady on January 25, 2009
Pros: It has a clear, bright screen, wi-fi, inbuilt webcam, mic and speakers, ethernet port, vga out, mic in and headphone jack, 2 usb ports, nice large keyboard, 1GB RAM, 160GB Hard disc!
Cons: I really can't think of any cons, the product was a great price, looks good and does exactly what I need it to do.
Summary: I really like this product it's small, light and looks slick, however I think some people expect too much from this laptop range, they're sub notebooks people!

I have a HP Mini-note (2133) and I think it's great for the money I paid for it ($550US). In comparison with other sub-notebooks it's specifications are excellent! I wanted a small machine, which it is. I wanted to be able to get on the net, which I can. I wanted to take my music with me and be able to play it, which again I can because of it's 160GB hard disc!
Also I wasn't disappointed with battery life, I was able to type for long periods without the need to have the machine plugged in, internet usage was a little draining but I was still impressed with how long the machines battery lasted.
Overall I am not disappointed with my purchase, I got what I expected and needed and for people who want raw processing power and all those little added extras like back-lit keyboard then you need to buy an actual fully featured, fully powered laptop! (e.g. fast processor, lots of RAM). This machine is great for what it is! :o)7 out of 8 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great Netbook!
by fatal_foto on February 20, 2009
Pros: Small but large enough to be useful. The hardware HP choose makes this a useful mini computer for all computing tasks. Hard Drive is large enough to actually load more than just a few files.
Cons: I wish it had a backlit keyboard, maybe in the next round of devices.
Summary: If your in the market for a netbook, you really need to take a serious look at this one. The combination of it's great design and powerful hardware has ...

Summary: I wanted to like this netbook. I bought it at Costco for a good price. As listed in the Positives, there is much to like about this machine, BUT, I imagined using this a lot in a darkened room while watching television, and while I am a pretty good typist, I am not touch, and since the keybord is not back-lite, The other deal breaker for me was I could not angle the keyboard to the optimal angle for viewing. I needed another five degrees or so, but the screen could not open that much. So back to Costco, and I returned it.
Update: Some reviewers have asked if it was the Mini that I purchased at Costco and returned. I can verify that it was the HP Mini, but it might have been the 1000, not the 1033. My apologies if my review for the HP Mini was posted to the wrong netbook.

Updated on Mar 27, 2009Sigh, I dislike correcting my correction. My review was on the 1000, not the 1033 and certainly not the 2140.3 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

Wow...better than a cheap ultraportable...
by ajnauron on February 4, 2009
Pros: Ultraportables go for around $2000 and this is more compact yet still looks like a business machine. Love the 160gb hd and 2gb of ram, this is my favorite netbook yet.
Cons: 6 cell battery raises the unit instead of protruding out the back like IBM's thinkpads

Desirable, until the price tag

Cons: Expensive, 3+ pounds, No Easy Mode Xandros Linux option

Summary: I was leaning very strongly towards the HP Mini 2140, until I realized the $547 starting price only applies to the freeDOS version without wi-fi, bluetooth or the 6 cell battery. With all those options plus xp home your looking at a $650-$700 mini.
Edit: For some reason when you configure the PC you get a bigger price then what their toting for the pre-configured models.
It seems considerably overpriced, to the point of being ridiculous.

Excellent piece of work!
by critiq on January 23, 2009
Pros: FAST with 7200 rpm harddrive, SOLID, SIMPLE, and its a PERFORMER! IT ALSO HAS A GREAT KEYBOARD FOR TYPING SCHOOL WORK. WI/FI EASY TO CONNECT. START UP IS FASTER. SCREEN IS BETTER THAN THE 2133.
Cons: FINGER PAD SMALL, WEB CAM NOT SO GOOD, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT 5MP CAMERA. DONT THINK SO! WOULD BE BETTER IF THE BATTERY CHARGER INSERT WAS ON THE BACK OF THE COMPUTER, KINDA OF AWKWARD ON THE RIGHT SIDE..

Too big & not instant-on like WinCE-based NEC MobilePro
by doug-jensen on January 23, 2009
Pros: Appears to be built well.
Cons: Too big because of screen height, see MobilePro 900 which has 92% KB but Sony P form factor. WinCE is all I need to run, and is instant-on. XP and Vista and Linux boot too slowly for me.
Summary: This netbook typifies why they are not for me: 10" is too big, I might just as well keep using my 12" Lenovo X60. The Sony P is the perfect ...
Summary: This netbook typifies why they are not for me: 10" is too big, I might just as well keep using my 12" Lenovo X60. The Sony P is the perfect size for me but even if I could downgrade to XP, that boots far too slowly. I want to boot the machine AND TextMaker both in about one second.

Impressive Little Netbook!
by cedwhatev on May 23, 2009
Pros: Large Keyboard, Bright Screen (1366 x 768), Excellent Battery Life (Getting over 6 hrs w/ 6 Cell), Compact, Strong Build, Excellent Wireless Connectivity
Cons: The mouse track pad, but it's not as bad as they say; 0.3 webcam could be a con, but images still look crisp on it; the 6 Cell battery sticking out the bottom is not a con for me, as I like the netbook on a slight tilt. Only big con is the speakers.
Summary: Like my rating stated, this is an outstanding machine. I've done extensive research on netbooks, and came down to either this, or the Samsung N110, but I went with ...
Summary: Like my rating stated, this is an outstanding machine. I've done extensive research on netbooks, and came down to either this, or the Samsung N110, but I went with this based on the build as the HP Mini 2140 is the only netbook that isn't made of plastic. I am VERY happy with my decision. It's my first netbook and the size of it takes some getting used to. I think I'd really like to see this exact model but with an 11" or 12" screen, and better speakers, that'd be a winner right there. But, all in all, I love this netbook and highly recommend it for anyone like myself who is looking to try out a netbook. I especially look forward to using it during travelling, but am really enjoying everyday use out of it as well.
About six since my purchase, and I've had zero problems with my 2140. I've used it travelling, and it's been spectacular. Battery life lasted all the way through on a 6 hour flight. I've even got a carrying case designed for 10" netbooks. Very handy. Still recommended to buy!

Great Netbook for the money
by davidgrau on May 8, 2009
Pros: Love the price (got high res and extended battery for $500.00), overall size, solid metal construction, keyboard size, weight, battery life, all the external ports and VGA output for overhead projectors, resolution (got the 1366x768), and speed.
Cons: Track pad is too small for a lot of use (eraser mouse would be great!)
Summary: Granted, netbooks are not for everyone. It is VERY SMALL, but if that's what you are after, for the traveling professional or student, this is the best netbook for ...

3 hours of battery totally misses the point
by wilycat on April 10, 2009
Pros: AFAIG, The HP is a really nice unit. Better in some respects than any other current netbook. But the battery life sucks and who cares about an Expresscard slot as long as it has USB ports? A netbook should be lite, mobile and cheap.
Cons: Overpriced for the genre. Lousy battery capacity. Samsung set the standard at close to 8 hours (at least that's what I'm getting).and I believe ASUS or Acer now have a higher capacity unit.
Summary: When will CNET, ZDNET, and others figure out what we want in this genre of notebook? They all seem to be on a different page from we mere mortals,
