Teeny Tiny Notebook For Not a Lot of Dough
by garciaog on February 17, 2009
Pros: Significantly lighter and thinner than traditional notebook computers.
Able to perform typical tasks as fast as more powerful machines.
Excellent price point.
Cons: Only two USB ports.
Internal camera/microphone a little weak.
Summary: Picked up this little machine for less than $400, and it has a 10.5" display, Bluetooth connectivity, 1gb RAM, 60gb hard drive, and an on-board camera/microphone. Right out ...
Summary: Picked up this little machine for less than $400, and it has a 10.5" display, Bluetooth connectivity, 1gb RAM, 60gb hard drive, and an on-board camera/microphone. Right out of the box, it was astonishing to see how compact this machine really is. If you travel or are a student, or just hate lugging a traditional laptop around, these are worth a look. I will be upgrading to 2gb RAM and adding MS Office 2007 in the next few days. It does not come with a CD/DVD drive, but I have an external one as it is. Given its mini-me appearance, the on-board camera and microphone are a little weak. I have yet to utilize any of the Bluetooth features, so I cannot comment on that. Battery life is adequate for the size of the machine.I have now upgraded the RAM to 2gb and added MS Office 2007. While this makes a significant improvement in speed for web surfing and running multiple applications and makes this an even more appealing machine, it is still not as powerful or as fast as larger notebooks, but for those of us who just want something inexpensive to check email and surf the web, or to type a term paper or book report, these are an excellent choice.

Updated on Dec 19, 2009After more hang time using this netbook, I still think it was a good buy. My wife uses it exclusively, and has since sold off her full-size laptop in favor of this netbook. I find that the camera, bluetooth, and microphone are useless, at least for me. Even if I did use them, the camera and microphone are weak and appear to have been an afterthought. Regardless, when you have MS Office installed, this can probably be someone's only PC, as opposed to being a mobile device. Having said that, I cannot seem to install HP printer software on this machine, but we have a dedicated laptop (my laptop) for that purpose. One annoyance that we have discovered is that the power cord comes undone just enough to stop working, requiring it to be forcefully plugged it, otherwise it won't charge or provide external power. All in all it has been good to us.

Pros: Internal Wireless
80 Gb Hard drive
XP doesn't need as fast of a processor as Vista
Fits in my backpack AND purse.
Cons: You would need an external CD-ROM Drive ($80) but I rarely use it
If you have big hands or bad eyesight this might not be the laptop for you

Summary: I was very surprised at just how great this mini laptop performs. I enjoy the fact that it has more features and performance than the other netbooks (with linux and SSD drives), while it remains extremely compact. Overall the design is very nice, looks just great. I upgraded the 1GB chip to 2GB, so with the extra memory I can do just about anything on here that I need to on the road.
Unless you need to do very serious work on the road, this is an ideal solution for absolutely everything else. The screen is crisp, keyboard layout is comfortable for the size, and all the extra features like bluetooth, webcam, memory card reader, are just icing on the cake.
Moreover, you will have a hard time finding another laptop of these specifications and size that looks as sleek and balanced as this one. Great work HP!

Fine little netbook.

Pros: light, small, adequate performance. The keyboard works well.
Cons: Keyboard is not spill resistant. Fortunately, I got it replaced under HP's extended care warranty.
Could use a larger battery, which the newer ones now have. I bought a second battery, which is almost as good as having one big one.

Summary: The proprietary VGA output was a big mistake. They don't tell you that wi-fi eliminates a USB port. The plug on the power cable sucks. It should be a 90 deg plug and have some sort of strain relief to keep the power cord from breaking the socket.
The HD is kinda slow and not gigantic. The newer 160 plus drives are better, but this first edition one used a ZIF cable which makes finding a compatible drive difficult. I stuck in a 32 gb SDHC card for data storage.
Reinstalling the software is a complete mess. Without a $100 external CD you can't do it. Took me hours to find out how to configure a USB stick to do the job, but it still isn't right.
The ability to flip the screen orientation is great for reading stuff. Too bad they didn't include a keyboard driver that would also flip the arrow keys and mouse!!!!

simple/easy to use
Cons: slow at times but i think when its slow its just a result from me doing too much on a netbook
