HP Mini 110 price range: $299.99

The good: Budget-friendly version of one of our favorite Netbooks.
The bad: Thicker and heavier than previous versions; included file-syncing software didn't impress us.
The bottom line: While the new, less expensive, HP Mini 110 doesn't stray far from the Mini 1000 mold, there are some subtle changes--not always for the best.
As the slim, snazzy HP Mini 1000 is one of our favorite Netbooks, and we were excited to hear of a less expensive sequel. While the new $329 Mini 110 doesn't stray far from the Mini 1000 mold, there are some subtle changes that are not always for the best.
At first glance, the two systems seem identical, but when we pulled out a Mini 1000 for a comparison, we saw the Mini 110 was slightly thicker and heavier. Not by much--but in a tiny Netbook form factor, a tiny change can make a big difference, especially when compared with something like the new Asus Eee PC 1008HA, which is slimmer than its predecessor is, not the other way around.
Other than that, we found a standard set of Netbook components, including an Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, Windows XP, and a 160GB 5,400rpm hard drive. The biggest advantage is that at $329, this new model is very competitively priced, especially when only a few months ago, the $350 Acer Aspire One seemed like the drop-dead entry point for XP Netbooks. You're essentially trading size and weight for price, as a comparably equipped Mini 1000 would cost about $110 more.

| Category | Netbook |
While the general look and feel are very similar to the Mini 1000, when compared side by side, the Mini 110 looks a little bloated. Still, the Mini 1000 has always occupied the higher end of the Netbook price spectrum, and the Mini 110's thicker look is more in line for what you'd find in the sub-$399 category.
The same excellent keyboard, with wide, flat keys, is still one of our minilaptop favorites, but the touch pad remains a weakness in the Mini's design. The wide-but-short surface makes scrolling a pain, and the mouse buttons are pushed to the far left and right sides, rather than sitting below the touch pad. We're also not fans of the Mini's power switch, which is a small slider on the front edge that's hard to hit (although it does make it unlikely that you'll accidentally turn the system off or on when you don't mean to).
One new feature that did catch our eye was the inclusion of a third-party software app called Syncables, which promises to connect different machines on your local network, allowing you to easily share documents, photos, video, and music, and sync e-mail accounts, even across Windows, Mac, and Linux systems.
In theory, it seems like a good idea (we often use Gmail and Google docs for this kind of thing). In practice, we found the Syncables software difficult to use. The screens are clearly not designed with the Mini's 1,024x576-pixel resolution in mind, the layout and navigation were confusing, even when installed on our desktop computer, and the entire process seemed fairly unintuitive.
The 10.1-inch wide-screen display has a 1,024x576-pixel native resolution, which is slightly lower than the 1,024x600-pixel resolution standard for a screen this size. That's generally fine for most Web surfing, but long, vertical pages and Word documents can require a lot of scrolling to read. The edge-to-edge glass of previous models has been replaced by a standard inset panel. It's not as slick a look, but the display itself was matte, instead of glossy, which is a very hard-to-find feature in a Netbook, and especially good if you're bothered by screen glare.
| HP Mini 110 | Average for category [netbook] | |
| Video | VGA | VGA |
| Audio | Combo headphone/mic jack | headphone/microphone jacks |
| Data | 3 USB 2.0, SD card reader | 2 USB 2.0, SD card reader |
| Expansion | None | None |
| Networking | Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth | Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth |
| Optical drive | None | None |
The Mini 110 has more ports and connections than the Mini 1000 line, with a third USB port and a standard VGA output for video. Watch out for the split single headphone/mic jack, which can cause problems if you need to record and monitor audio at the same time.
Intel's single-core 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU offers enough computing power for the basic tasks that Netbooks are designed--namely Web surfing, working on documents, and some basic multimedia playback. While the Asus Eee PC 1008HA offers a slightly faster N280 version of the Atom, this system performed on par with previous HP Mini Netbooks.
Netbook buyers must usually choose between three-cell and six-cell battery options. The smaller batteries commonly run from 2 to 3 hours, while a six-cell battery can be good for 5 hours or longer--but at the cost of added size and weight. In our video playback battery drain test, the Mini 110 ran for 2 hours and 22 minutes using the included three-cell battery. That's somewhat less than we'd expect, as the original Mini 1000 ran 20 minutes longer on the same test. In casual use, for Web surfing and office work, you should get closer to 3 hours (or longer) of battery life.
The system includes an industry-standard one-year parts-and-labor warranty from HP. Support is accessible through a 24-7 toll-free phone line, an online knowledge base, and driver downloads.

Summary: I actually first bought the Acer becuase I thought "well its a little bit cheaper and they have about the same features" ... but really the Acer blue felt cheap and also they have a notorious problem with connecting to some WiFi signals which caused me many hours of head ache... so I returned it and got this HP 110 and I love it! I literally get compliments on it every single time I take it out in public. It looks and feels expensive and work (in my opinion) better than the Acer. So I really recommend getting this one... :)

A good netbook

Pros: Small and light to carry around. Decent speed using XP operating system. Excellent keyboard layout. Excellent audio. No excessive heat observed when used for prolonged hours.
Cons: Non-standard screen resolution- some programs will not run on this unit. No bluetooth installed on my unit.

HP did not compomise on the keyboard nor features on this netbook model. This netbook can run Windows XP with ease. Maybe it could run the basic Windows 7 but not recommended for Visto. For faster boot-up time- install Linux such as Presto!
I purchased the unit with the 6 cell battery which gives me approximately 5 hours of usage. The battery is light. And getting a spare battery will not add more weight to your bag.
The only major qualm I have is the screen resolution which is non-standard for a Windows device. But you will get used to it eventually. As to having no bluetooth installed, I bought a mini-dongle. The OS installed the necessary bluetooth software. For better bluetooth connectivity, I suggest buying the Soleil Bluetooth software.
Overall, I truly love this unit.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Very capable netbook at a fair price
Pros: Excellent keyboard/Non-glare screen/good overall configuration and construction
Cons: Screen size slightly non-standard/OK, but not outstanding battery life/FN keys are not "brightly" marked/

Summary: This has all the typical components of most netbooks of this generation, so no performance plus/minus over most. The mini 110 has a decent installed software base w/little bloatware. I use it for the typical netbook uses, web surfing/emails/on-line games/MS Office runs well, so I take it on the road for work, etc.
To me, the 2 outstanding charachteristics are the absolutely GREAT keyboard for a netbook, and the non-glare screen, as I do use this under a number of lighting conditions, including outdoors. Connectivity is just as good as any of my notebooks, and WIndows XP SP3 runs sprightly, a good match for this netbook.
Decent battery run time (I have the 6 cell unit), but not best in class, in real-life usage I get 4 to 5 good hours on a charge, but I often run it at a fairly high brightness level.
Very satisfied with the configuration and quality of construction. Many folks do not like the track pad with the side-mounted mouse buttons, but after an initial adjustment to this, I actually have no issue with this at all, and the track pad responds well.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Lack of technical support and lack of technical goods
by dabernethy on November 30, 2009
Pros: Nothing. I can't say one positive thing about this computer or their service.
Cons: The motherboard died within 6 uses. Tech support gave me the wrong steps to fix the problem. He told me to take the back off, and then once the back was off he told me "oops," He had the wrong model's directions. Still waiting on return slip!
Summary: I absolutely would not purchase an HP Mini. I probably wouldn't buy another HP at all after the support, or lack of support, I have received. The computer was ...
Summary: I absolutely would not purchase an HP Mini. I probably wouldn't buy another HP at all after the support, or lack of support, I have received. The computer was only used for short travel trips, about 6 times, before the motherboard actually died. SIX times and the motherboard dies! I've had it since June of this year. Tech Support (in India) gave me the wrong steps to take care of the computer because he was looking at the wrong model number's instructions. (Wasn't even looking at a netbook but a regular laptop's instructions) And because I didn't purchase it directly from HP (purchased it from Office Depot) the guy I'm talking to now (in the Philippines) said that's why I'm having issues with customer service. Excuse me? I purchased one of their products, it should have been supported to start with, as long as I bought it from one of their reputable resellers!!!!
So bottom line, do not purchase this laptop unless you are looking for a throw away in about 3 months or less. And if that's the case, don't spend your money on the HP, send it to a charity that needs it. -
Hinges & Battery Clip Shatter
by ShopMaven on November 14, 2009
Pros: Nice, compact netbook with good keyboard but odd touchpad mouse.
Cons: 1st one had battery clip shatter on 2nd day; 2nd one had hinges shatter on day 82 when opened (right) and then closed (left). Worse, Tech Support says Warranty won't cover it -- wants $290 to repair Mini that retails for $303! Repair kit is $30 (web)
Summary: Recommend something else -- Dell or Lenovo. This case has a serious design flaw when battery & hinges shatter and chip the case, too. Worse, HP won't stand behind ...
Summary: Recommend something else -- Dell or Lenovo. This case has a serious design flaw when battery & hinges shatter and chip the case, too. Worse, HP won't stand behind it. Worse still, must be a common problem because there's a repair kit online and HP Tech Support Mini staff said the wait was an hour because they are "overwhelmed" with repair orders. Sad -- HP is saying the Mini puts the Personal back in Computing. Well, it's putting something in but it doesn't FEEL like computing. Feels like copout.

It should be just your fun PC. It's cute and little.
by skwrupb on November 2, 2009
Pros: It looks great in pink, fits easily into your purse or car for running around and staying on top of things simple like email, music, watching DVD's.
Cons: Screen resolution is not that good. Keyboard is cramped but good for a netbook. Your hands start hurting after a while. But most importantly, the tech support is so bad. My Instant HP web feature doesn't work and they didn't figure it out.
Summary: If you can throw around $400 like blowing it in a slot machine, it's fun and good. If you want to really work on it all day or if ...
Summary: If you can throw around $400 like blowing it in a slot machine, it's fun and good. If you want to really work on it all day or if it's your only computer, go for something bigger and faster. I've had it for 3 days now and I'm debating whether to send it back or not.

Great little netbook, may need another one for wife.
by Ericshelpdesk on October 3, 2009
Pros: Perfect for web surfing on the couch
160 GB Standard hard drive
Smooth video playback for most videos
Lots of great old games work on it!
3 USBs and a VGA out allow the netbook to work on a full size monitor with a mouse and full size keyboard.Cons: Dodgy AC connector.
Small touch pad (buy a mobile mouse to go with)
Not enough computer for smooth viewing on Hulu.
Only 1GB of memory (Thanks Microsoft!) but it is upgradeable to 2GB
Wife won't give it back.Summary: I sprung for the 1366 by 768 screen upgrade and the n280 (1.66 ghz, 667 FSB) processor variant. I also got a deal on a 3 and 6 cell ...
Summary: I sprung for the 1366 by 768 screen upgrade and the n280 (1.66 ghz, 667 FSB) processor variant. I also got a deal on a 3 and 6 cell battery.
I've figured out that the cord problem was me not pushing it in hard enough.
Things I've done with it:
VNC Viewer for all my other PCs allowing me to use my other computers from anywhere in the house or any wifi hot spot.
Played dual audio MKVs using Media Player with no playback issues.
Played several great old games without any problems.
Used it as a remote control for my media PC across the network.
Used it as a mobile music player for Pandora
Typed this review
I don't like that the power connector wiggles and requires constant attention if you're moving the netbook around. Trying to use the computer without a battery has resulted in an instant shutdown when the connector wiggled in the wrong direction.
The higher resolution screen keeps things small on the 10.1 display. My wife complains that it's more of a "chest top" computer since the has to hold it closer to read anything. I like setting my monitors at very high resolutions anyway and don't mind the smaller text so long as I can have more desktop space. Don't spring for this option if you're favorite standard resolution is 1024 x 768 or lower on your normal PC.
Using the 3 Cell battery I was able to get 2 hours 10 minutes of full volume playback on Pandora before it decided to hibernate. I would expect the 6 cell to double that.
All in all this is a great addition to my little network.
Updated on Oct 10, 2009
I asked someone at my local electronics store, "what kind of games can you play on this?". They replied, "none".
Here are some of the games I can play on the upgraded netbook so far:
Halo: Combat Evolved (640 x 480 low details)
Diablo II
Starcraft
Fallout 1 & 2
Fallout Tactics
MechCommander 2
Homeworld 1
Arcanum
Heavy Gear 2
Return to Castle Wolfenstien.
These are all older games, obviously, but they are still great fun. -
