The good: Blu-ray player and dedicated graphics not normally included at this price; competitive application performance; nice-looking design; touch-sensitive media control keys.
The bad: Disappointing audio output; below-average battery life, despite use of extended-cell battery; glossy touch pad doesn't provide the best feel.
The bottom line: The HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx is a low-cost, big-screen laptop that will win you over with its Blu-ray player and pleasing design. It may lose you, however, when you hear its speakers.
Editors' note: This review is part of our 2009 Retail Laptop and Desktop Holiday Roundup, which covers specific fixed configurations of popular systems found in retail stores.
Any low-end desktop replacement must cut some corners on its way to providing a serviceable multimedia experience at an approachable price. At $729, the 17.3-inch HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx is such a laptop, but it includes a couple of extras to sweeten the deal.
For starters, it features an optical drive that can play Blu-ray Discs, in addition to its standard duties of reading and writing DVDs and CDs. Secondly, it has a dedicated (albeit entry-level) graphics card that allows for just a smidge of gaming capability.
It's these two features that give the Pavilion dv7-3065dx a leg up on the Dell Studio 1745-3691MBU, a 17.3-inch desktop replacement that costs $50 more, features integrated graphics and only a DVD burner, but offers superior audio output.

The Pavilion dv7-3065dx is a supersized version of the 15.6-inch Pavilion dv6-1375dx. The larger Pavilion dv7 provides a screen that's about 1.7 inches larger (measured on the diagonal) and a body about 1.3 inches wider, 0.7 inches deeper, and just a hair thicker. The dv7 weighs 1.3 pounds more. The added width allows for a spacious keyboard and dedicated number pad; both felt a bit cramped on the smaller dv6.
The only other design difference between the two: the dv7 features touch-sensitive media control keys in addition the mute, volume, and Wi-Fi on/off controls that compose the entirety of the dv6's touch-sensitive controls. HP also includes a Media Center remote control. The tiny remote gives you full control of the Media Center app (it also works with HP's MediaSmart software) and when not in use, it can be stored in the laptop's ExpressCard slot.
The case features the same Imprint Finish, which puts graphics on the plastic. The plastic used here is an espresso black, and a series of lines and circular shapes run across it, adding a little visual pop. All surfaces, from the keyboard deck and lid to the chrome edging and screen bezel, feature a glossy finish that reflects light and absorbs fingerprints. The touch pad, too, absorbs fingerprints with its chrome finish. It's not the most comfortable mousing surface, and the mouse buttons are loud and stiff.
The 17.3-inch display features LED backlighting and a cinematic 16:9 native resolution. Its 1,600x900-pixel native resolution is common in a laptop this size, and is a bump up from the 1,366x768 pixels on a 15.6-inch like the Pavilion dv6-1375dx. HD videos look great on the big display, though DVDs show artifacts more readily than they do on smaller laptops.
The laptop features Altec Lansing speakers with SRS Premium Sound--the same setup that impressed us on the Pavilion dv6-1375dx. We're less enthused about their implementation here. It sounds as if the speakers are being asked to do too much. Volume reaches a suitable level at max output, but the sound begins to break up and become distorted. We found ourselves listening at about 75 percent volume to get the best sound. The Dell Inspiron 1745-3691 may lack a Blu-ray drive, but its 2.1 JBL speakers are vastly superior to the dv7's Altec Lansing set.
| HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx | Average for category [desktop replacement] | |
| Video | HDMI, VGA | VGA plus HDMI or DisplayPort |
| Audio | Stereo speakers, two headphone and one microphone jack, FM antenna jack | Stereo speakers, headphone/microphone jacks |
| Data | 3 USB 2.0, eSATA/USB port, mulitformat memory card reader | 4 USB 2.0, SD card reader, eSATA |
| Expansion | ExpressCard/54 | ExpressCard/54 |
| Networking | Ethernet, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi | Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, optional mobile broadband |
| Optical drive | Blu-ray player / DVD burner | DVD burner |
You'll find no surprises with HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx's collection of ports. HDMI and eSATA highlight the video and data connections, respectively. The networking options, both wired and wireless, disappoint since neither Draft N nor Gigabit Ethernet make the cut.
The real star here is the Blu-ray drive. The optical drive can play Blu-ray Discs and can read and write to DVDs and CDs. Most laptops at this price feature a plain DVD burner. Two other exceptions to this rule are the $699 Sony Vaio VGN-NW270F/S and the $849 Toshiba Satellite P505-S8980.
In recent times, a consistent trend has developed where AMD's mobile processors have trailed their Intel competition in testing. The Pavilion dv7-3065dx uses a 2.4GHz AMD Turion II Ultra Dual-Core M600 processor and turned in a surprisingly good showing on CNET Labs' benchmarks. It trumped a large group of similarly priced Intel Core 2 Duo-based laptops on our multitasking benchmark, where the Athlon's edge in clockspeed over the 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo T6600 and the 2.13GHz Core 2 Duo P7450 is the likely cause. The Pavilion dv7-3065dx, however, trailed just slightly behind the same Core 2 Duo pack on our Photoshop and iTunes test.
With a low-end ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics card, the Pavilion dv7-3065dx is able to play older games at modest resolutions. We eked out a semi-playable 19 frames per second on Unreal Tournament 3 at 1,280x768 pixels with advanced settings turned off. Its gaming prowess may not be much, but the other laptops you'll find at this price point that use integrated Intel graphics are incapable of playing 3D games.
| HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx | Avg watts/hour |
| Off (60%) | 0.33 |
| Sleep (10%) | 0.99 |
| Idle (25%) | 18.37 |
| Load (05%) | 58.22 |
| Raw kWh Number | 68.33 |
| Annual Energy Cost | $7.76 |
The HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx uses an eight-cell battery, but it turned in performance that would be disappointing for a laptop with even just a six-cell battery. It lasted for only 2 hours 54 minutes on our demanding video-playback battery drain benchmark. The Dell Inspiron 1745-3691 uses a six-cell battery and ran for 3 hours 15 minutes on the same test. Under typical usage where you're not constantly playing a video, the Pavilion dv7-3065dx ran for roughly 4 hours on a single charge.
HP backs the Pavilion dv7-3065dx with an industry-standard, one-year warranty. Toll-free telephone support is available 24-7 during your warranty period, and the HP support Web site includes real-time chat with a technical support representative. If you want to troubleshoot problems yourself, you can search through the site's thorough FAQ database.

very good for home entertainment but not for gaming
by masonstar on November 13, 2009
Pros: excellent CPU with four gigs of RAM and a blu-ray player, 17.3 inch screen and a remote. This is a very good laptop to watch movies on.
Cons: LOTS of bloat software. NOT very good at gaming, it seems that HP split a awesome computer into two computers. This one the dv7-3065dx for good entertainment with a blu-ray and the dv7-3060us for good gaming but no blu-ray.

Summary: If you wish to just have a laptop for work and to watch blu-ray movies with low to no interest in gaming this is a great laptop. If you wish to have the gaming capability the dv7-3060us has a better video card but no blu-ray and everything else is the same. I got this laptop at BestBuy for the price that is listed (730 us dollars).
This is an update to the original review. It shows on the specifications every where ive looked that this laptop the dv7 3065dx only has a b/g network card, this is untrue it has a Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n WiFI Adapter. The specs also say that this has no bluetooth...well it does. Like I said before the only thing lacking with the dv7-3065dx is that it doesnt have a great video card for gaming (Ati HD 4200) and the screen only goes to 1600x900 resolution.

by iceman3411 on November 2, 2009
Pros: Long battery life
Beautiful true 16:9 widescreen display
Blu-ray player with HDMI output
eSata connection- able to stream video from external hardrive without problem
keyboard with number pad. typying easy
pretty fast for only a dual processorCons: A little heavy, but expected for how big it is. I'm also having trouble with some blu-ray movies (transformers 2) with abnormal sounds and slow playback. not sure if it's a movie or firmware version that needs upgraded.
that's about it.Summary: I've only had it for about a month and I am very pleased with the laptop. I really wanted a Sony because I have never had any issues with ...
Summary: I've only had it for about a month and I am very pleased with the laptop. I really wanted a Sony because I have never had any issues with Sony products in the past, but I've deceided to give HP a try because it was about $200 cheaper and had more features than the comparable Sony model. Windows 7 is great...so glad to see Vista go. iI'm not a PC gamer, so I don't know how that ATI Radeon 3200 performs with games, but it has been flawless with movie playback, except for the Transformers 2 issue. Battery life is advertised at 5 1/2 hours, I've taken it to 4 and still had about 25% left on the power meter. Of note, I was only running a couple simple programs and the internet so battery life is probably shorter if watching movies the whole time. I don't really have any major issues, love the computer. I will update the review if something major comes up. I would definitely purchase this computer again if I had to choose between this and the Sony.

Best bang for the money
by ghinfla on January 20, 2010
Pros: Have no idea why others rated it so low when I compare the features with laptops costing $300+ more.
Plenty fast for standard software but I don't do video editing. Connected in 10 minutes out of the box.
Use Revo to get rid of the bloatware.Cons: Needs at least 2 more USB ports.
Summary: Recommend to anyone who needs a basic laptop.

What's that about the speakers?
by Ricky_pr on January 18, 2010
Pros: The speakers sound great, touchpad is really soft, but once you get used to, its great, the speedy processor, dedicated graphics, rapid internet conection, wireless N, Blueray disc player, Big Screen, webcam!!
Cons: Well its big and heavy, leaves fingerprints but it really does not matter because of all the Pros!! :)
Summary: I've just had it for a few days, and I have to say that the speakers sound great. I don't know why people criticize the speakers, please dont ...
Summary: I've just had it for a few days, and I have to say that the speakers sound great. I don't know why people criticize the speakers, please dont be such party poopers, they sound extremely good for a computer of this type at this cost. The computer is glossy, but it has a great number pad, the texture of the material feels comfortable in your hands, and for the price, its priceless!!!!

Great laptop for only $700? no! yes this one is
by loudpathfinder on January 2, 2010
Pros: windows 7 is great on this one it is fast and for only $700 you get a lot a 17.3" screen blueray player remote the features are why i bought this laptop when i was looking this one caught my eye and when i saw the price i was sold 500gb Hard drive!
Cons: hp software preloaded on it is crap delete immediatly but thats the same with all new computers sound card is below the rest of this laptop you hear crackling at high volumes but no big deal

Summary: im a college student who owned a dell inspiron 1525 before this hp the dell was crap so i was looking for a new one when i saw this one i read the features then looked at the price and was stunned so i was sold when i saw all i got for only $700 the next the other computer with a blueray player was a sony that had less features and cost $999 so i was sold as soon as i saw this this computer is perfect for me im not a hardcore or even a gamer i just like playing video games some mainly older ones but the dedicated graphics card is great it plays most the new games great and battery life is as expected if you just do basic stuff (ie, typing listening to music ect) while on battery it lasts about 5 hours but burning or playing discs drains it like all laptops and if youi turn brightness and volume down when on battery it lasts relly long for a big 17" screen laptop the 500gb hard drive is more than i need and 4gb of ram means this bad boy runs alot and doesnt talk back i had itunes internet explorer with 5 tabs open while downloading 3 songs and 2 programs from the internet and this computer did that like nothing was goin on at all it did it fast and error free if you have doubts dont this is a great laptop at a steal on the price YOU WILL NOT FIND ANOTHER LAPTOP THIS PRICE WITH THE FEATURES THIS ONE HAS GET IT!

Couldn't have asked for a better X-mas present.
by dpcotton on December 28, 2009
Pros: Windows 7 runs incredibly smooth with 4gb of RAM
LED backlit screen looks crisp and clear
Blu-ray compatibility at this price point?Cons: Speakers aren't the greatest, but then again it's a laptop so I wasn't expecting a Bose home audio experience
Wish the keyboard was backlit
Scrolling with the trackpad isn't as intuitive as Apple's double swipeSummary: I'm a college student and I've been holding off buying a laptop for as long as I could. Turns out the wait is over as I ended up ...
Summary: I'm a college student and I've been holding off buying a laptop for as long as I could. Turns out the wait is over as I ended up getting one for Christmas as a surprise. Originally I was looking for a much smaller notebook (nothing bigger than 15") but once I got this little lady up and running there was no turning back. Although it's not super portable I don't plan on lugging it to class everyday so that's not really a problem.
Everything about this laptop seems well-made and high quality. The specs are decent for the price (wasn't expecting to get a laptop with dedicated graphics memory) and I haven't had any problems to speak of. I find the battery life is just fine, especially if you use the power saving setting and turn the LCD brightness down. I've been able to get 3+ hours of heavy usage out of a charge.
Long story short if you're looking for a good looking low cost desktop replacement look no further. Buy this laptop! -
Problems right out of the box
by TrueCaliburPimp on December 26, 2009
Pros: Blu-ray player (read only tho), looks nice, and the remote control looks cool
Cons: blu-ray is read-only, battery life is so-so, fingerprint magnet, remote and track pad 'don't always work with blu-ray' (actual disclaimer that pops up), screen clarity really is not that great, comes loaded with useless software, etc.
Summary: Bottom line? get a mac, seriously. I have a 3 year-old imac with 4 gb ram and a 2.33 ghz processor and it's still considerably faster than this. ...
Summary: Bottom line? get a mac, seriously. I have a 3 year-old imac with 4 gb ram and a 2.33 ghz processor and it's still considerably faster than this. I listed some cons above from what i've observed thus far (this is my second day of ownership).
the computer looks cool and says it's great on paper, but it isn't. Bottom line.
what's the purpose of having a blu-ray player when the trackpad may/may not work with the menu? you can't operate or even play the movie without a mouse or a remote...
also, i had to pay for anti-virus software. so not only do you have to purchase your computer for 800+ dollars and the warranty for 200+ dollars, but also you have to pay a yearly anti-virus subscription? give me a break. this computer sucks, idk what these people are talking about, but this is seriously not a sound investment.
the speakers suck, but it's a laptop people - they all suck.
i'll be surprised if this thing lasts 3 years with normal college student wear and tear.
