The good: Very stylish design, loud speakers, lightweight and affordable.
The bad: Underpowered ULV processor, mediocre battery life.
The bottom line: If you're searching for a great-looking thin-and-light laptop at a good price, the Lenovo IdeaPad U350 bridges the gap between personal and professional and is worth checking out. But its design is more successful than its horsepower.
While it's hard for us to weigh design over performance when looking at a laptop, products such as the Lenovo IdeaPad U350 make it a little easier. As another entry in the growing field of affordable CULV thin-and-lights, the compact and really great-looking U350 is Lenovo's MacBook in terms of design. Lighter than it is thin, the Pentium U2700 processor-packing machine is clad in minimal silver and black and aims to keep a stylish low profile. And while the U2700 processor is both low-power and low-performance by Core 2 Duo standards, this thin-and-light is perfectly capable of running Windows Vista and mainstream applications.
At a starting price of $629 ($749 for our configuration), the U350 is less affordable than a 12-inch Netbook such as the Lenovo IdeaPad S12, while not as expensive as some professional-grade thin-and-lights such as the Lenovo ThinkPad T400s. And as such, it's a success.
While we'd like to see this same design with a more powerful processor and better battery, it's another valid alternative to the MSI X340 and Acer Timeline 3810T for those looking for a lightweight laptop who don't require an optical drive or significant graphics.

We really liked the overall look of the IdeaPad U350, in case you didn't already figure that out. Compared with Lenovo's business-oriented and more expensive T400s, it's far more attractive. While the T400s does have a reinforced crush-resistant chassis, we prefer the business/personal tone of the U350, which cleverly bridges the gap between office and home in its design. A savvy mix of textured black patterns on the outer lid and glossy black on the inner, coupled with brushed metal around the keyboard, comes close to mimicking the MacBook Pro's look.
There is no optical drive in the U350, much like in other thin-and-lights such as the Acer Timeline series and the MSI X340. In that sense, the U350 is a closer cousin to the MacBook Air, although a bit thicker (the U350 is 1 inch tall). At first glance, the U350 looks thick enough to have handled an optical drive, but the lightweight feel without it is refreshing.
The keyboard is similar to other Lenovo offerings: the tapered keys have a comfortable feel but are a little softer than those on a ThinkPad. The touch pad has a tactile friction that makes multitouch easy; it's covered with a finer grain than Lenovo's more heavily dimpled IdeaPad Y pads. The touch pad buttons, while large, are soft to the point of being mushy. While they worked fine, not having a click was distracting. Above the keyboard are just a few dedicated buttons: one for volume mute, and one for instant access to Lenovo's OneKey data backup and recovery software. Volume and screen brightness are controlled through a function button-arrow key combination.
The IdeaPad U350's glossy 13.3-inch 16:9 LED screen has a resolution of 1,366x768, absolutely standard for this size. Icons and text looked sharp, and the colors and brightness generally looked very good when watching movies and video. The tucked-out-of-sight internal speakers are also amazingly loud, much louder than we'd expect for a machine this size. A built-in Webcam and microphone above the screen were also clear and crisp during video teleconferencing.
| Lenovo IdeaPad U350 | Average for category [thin and light] | |
| Video | VGA-out, HDMI | VGA plus HDMI or DisplayPort |
| Audio | Stereo speakers, headphone/microphone jacks | Stereo speakers, headphone/microphone jacks |
| Data | 3 USB 2.0, SD card reader | 3 USB 2.0, SD card reader |
| Expansion | None | ExpressCard/54 |
| Networking | Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth | Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, optional WWAN |
| Optical drive | None | DVD burner |
The port assortment on the IdeaPad U350 is solid and functional, and while it doesn't have an ExpressCard slot, it does throw in an HDMI-out and an SD card slot. Internally, the IdeaPad U350 has both 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, so it doesn't lack for wireless--although 3G isn't really an option without buying a USB modem.
The IdeaPad U350 is available in several configurations, most with the Pentium U2700 processor we reviewed, although a slightly faster Core 2 Solo U3500 model is also available for the same $749 price on Lenovo's site (in which case, we recommend the upgrade). RAM is upgradable to 4GB, while the hard-drive capacities go up to 320GB or as low as 250GB.
While we absolutely love the U350's design, it must be noted that, against other CULV thin-and-lights out there, it wasn't exactly a barn-burner. In fact, in our multimedia multitasking, Photoshop, and iTunes tests, it came in last. That's because many of these laptops had either Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Solo regular or ultralow-voltage processors, while the IdeaPad U350 has a single-core Pentium U2700 ultralow-voltage processor (ULV). The Pentium U2700 is still far better than the Atom processor that runs in nearly all Netbooks, and is perfectly good for basic office applications, Web browsing, video streaming, and casual games, and seemed to run Vista with no problems. We just wouldn't advise any large-scale multitasking work using it.
Even though its performance is lower than expected, so is its price. At $749, it's more than half the price of a Dell Adamo, MacBook Air, or ThinkPad T400s. Of course, the IdeaPad U350's real competitors are the budget-range MSI X340 ($799 as originally reviewed) and Acer Aspire 3810T ($899), but it's also cheaper than either of those.
| Lenovo IdeaPad U350 | |
| Off (watts) | 0.4 |
| Sleep (watts) | 0.78 |
| Idle (watts) | 10.3 |
| Load (watts) | 21.68 |
| Raw (annual kWh) | 34.84 |
| Annual operating cost (@$0.1135/kWh) | $3.95 |
The IdeaPad U350's four-cell battery lasted 2 hours and 59 minutes in our video drain battery test, which is lower than we'd like for a low-voltage laptop. While the MSI X340 and Dell Adamo actually had worse battery life than this, the Acer Aspire 3810T achieves nearly double that on its included battery.
Lenovo includes an industry-standard, one-year, parts-and-labor warranty with the system. Upgrading to a three-year, at-home warranty will cost an extra $139, or $199 with accidental damage protection. Support is accessible through a 24-7 toll-free phone line, an online knowledgebase, and driver downloads.

Summary: Unit arrived with a factory defective heatsink. Shut down every 45 mins due to overheating of processor. Called, sent it back, 3 weeks later the unit was returned to me STILL UNREPAIRED. Lenovo stated I refused (a free) warranty repair. I did no such thing. It has been more than 2 months now. I have been upgraded to the ?Customer Service department? (after dealing with off shore call desk incompetence for weeks) and I am receiving intermittent calls from someone (in FL) who keeps asking me for information but seems helpless to do anything about my situation. Worst laptop I've had. Poorly made. not worth a dime.
by hoodyspeed on October 3, 2009
Pros: Light weight.
Cons: After <30days, the machine won't run off battery; the blue fatal error screen has appeared twice. Company wont replace it as it is post 21 day trial period -- even tho they say they are aware of problems "we have had problems with that battery".
Summary: Functionality is 0. Light weight is only good if the machine functions as advertised. However, this machine is fatally flawed. DO NOT BUY IT.

Attractive, thin laptop with adequate processing power
by JeffHawkey on September 19, 2009
Pros: It is thin and lightweight (relatively speaking) in its class.
It is the least expensive among its peers.
It is egonomically well designed with a comfortable keyboard, large toughpad, accessible ports and controls, and a crisp, bright display.Cons: It lacks an internal CD/DVD drive, comes preloaded with annoying adware, and has a few minor quirks that require user configuration or adaptation to overcome.
Summary: I needed a laptop that I could use for MS Office docs and web browsing on the go. Size and weight were important to me and I was willing to ...
Summary: I needed a laptop that I could use for MS Office docs and web browsing on the go. Size and weight were important to me and I was willing to give up processing horsepower to get the right form factor. I had my eye on the Macbook Air but didn't want to have to wrestle with software compatibility issues transitioning from the PC world to the Mac world. I also didn't want to spend (well) over $1000.
The Lenovo IdeaPad U350 came along at just the right time. It is sleek, stylish, lightweight, thin, and has reasonably good battery life (over 3 hours with my usage). I really like this laptop.
But it does have its quirks. For starters, the out-of-box experience ran into a snag when I tried to connect to my home WiFi. Lenovo phone support helped me deinstall some Lenovo software that was conflicting with the network connection. Next was the annoying and persistent adware that I had to disable and/or deinstall. Then I had to figure out how to silence the bothersome Lenovo boot-time jingle (press F2 during boot to change the BIOS setting for Boot Logo Volume). I also got rather distracted with the "Ambient Light Sensor" tweaking the screen brightness for no apparent reason. I disabled that "feature" in the Lenovo Energy Management settings. I also had to decrease the sensitivity of the touchpad and set "PalmCheck" on maximum in order to get it to behave while I'm typing. Apparently there is a downside to having such a large touchpad.
I wish I could figure out how to prevent the "NumLk" from being enabled every boot--I just have to remember to toggle it each time (before typing my password).
And why did they locate the "INSERT" key under FN-F12?
Enough whining. Now that I have the laptop configured the way I like it, I am really happy with it. If you are looking for a lightweight, thin, affordable 13.3" laptop and don't need a lot of horsepower, I recommend the Lenovo IdeaPad U350 for your consideration. -
awesome aesthetics everyone will notice.
by mcdukelee on August 30, 2009
Pros: Unmatched design, great feel and balance for typing, very light and elegant, great battery life, less fan noise when running, bluetooth, and great representation as a trend setter; also inexpensive compared to the competition.
Cons: No dvd drive (can't watch dvd even though it has an awesome screen resolution); mediocre speakers; not so fast processor (expected for its kind)
Summary: one of the best laptops in its class. Throw in a dvd drive and mac will run for its money.

Ultra-portable for basic business or personal use. :)
by missdivay on August 21, 2009
Pros: It's thin, light, has all the memory and performance I need for my writing and research. I can fit it in a large purse no problem. I don't need it for games or HD movies, so I'm perfectly happy with its performance so far.
Cons: The lack of an optical drive would be my biggest issue. Meaning no CD or DVD drive. The pops-ups and programs I can't seem to get rid of are also annoying, but not prohibitive.
Summary: I've always been an IBM Thinkpad user. So when I went looking for a new ultra-portable back up computer to my Thinkpad T40, I was pleasantly surprised to find ...
Summary: I've always been an IBM Thinkpad user. So when I went looking for a new ultra-portable back up computer to my Thinkpad T40, I was pleasantly surprised to find this IdeaPad option that was thin and light and actually affordable at less than $800.
It's made by a company I trust, Lenovo (formerly IBM), so I know I won't have any hardware issues. The battery life seems fine for 4-5 hours, depending on your energy mode (more than my T40 lasts for sure). I appreciate the new energy star options.
It's got a nice design. It's loaded Microsoft Office already in a trial period (I think it lets you run it something like 20 or 25 times before you have to buy it) but at least you don't have to load the program yourself.
The lack of an optical drive can be a problem if you have programs on disk you need to load as I did with my screenwriting programs, but I found I could download them from the company's site with the proper registration codes, so it ended up a non-problem. If need be, I also knew I could buy an external drive to load them.
As other users have mentioned, the bevy of pop-ups that begin when you start up for the first time is annoying and even time consuming to navigate past, but once done, they don't generally bother again. Save for one program I can't seem to get rid of, some subscription service I tried to uninstall and it still pops up to sign up. That is irritating. -
Nice looker with just enough power!!!
by cliffchen23 on August 19, 2009
Pros: The Look, what else do you need!!! Tight keyboard and Nice LED.
Cons: Battery life could use a boost, CPU power.

Summary: A perfectly good 2nd notebook for email, surfing and office suite works. Large keyboard and LED beats any netbook. Although you can't really use it for fast HD content viewing or keep it on for 8 hours like the Acer Timeline series, the beautiful exterior look trumps any shortcoming, or at least help you forget them.
