The good: Solid performance, thanks to the latest Core 2 Duo processor; extremely portable design; excellent keyboard; fingerprint reader; easy-to-use ThinkVantage utility; lengthy battery life with extended battery.
The bad: Lacks built-in optical drive; standard-aspect display feels outdated.
The bottom line: The ThinkPad X61s provides excellent dual-core performance in a lightweight, compact package that's still comfortable to use.
When you look at the latest ultraportable ThinkPad, it would seem that little has changed since we gave the Editors' Choice to the ThinkPad X60s last year. The ThinkPad X61s features largely the same design as its predecessor--it still lacks a built-in optical drive--but adds a low-voltage Core 2 Duo processor and Intel's latest Centrino Pro platform, plus new security and power-management features. The end result is a laptop that doesn't take up much room in a laptop bag and yet still packs plenty of performance oomph as well as a screen and keyboard that are comfortable for working long stretches away from the desk. (If you must have an ultraportable with an optical drive, look to competitors' laptops, such as the Fujitsu LifeBook P7230 and the Sony VAIO TXN17P/B--though both those models feature smaller screens.) About the only area where the ThinkPad X61s doesn't match its predecessor is battery life: whereas a year ago the ThinkPad X60s had the longest battery life we'd ever measured, the ThinkPad X61s posted a battery life that was still longer than average, but not chart-topping. Nevertheless, we'd gladly trade endless battery and the built-in optical drive for the ThinkPad X61s's great balance of comfort, performance, and portability.

The ThinkPad X61s is virtually identical in design to its predecessor. While the lightest ThinkPad X61s configuration weighs a spritely 2.7 pounds, our test unit, which included the "ultralight" display option but also a weighty extended battery, weighed 3.4 pounds (the extended battery also adds 1 inch of depth and 0.3 inch of thickness at the back). By comparison, both the Fujitsu LifeBook P7230 and the Sony VAIO TXN17P/B weigh less than 3 pounds and incorporate optical drives, though they feature single-core processors and smaller displays. Though it's clearly not the smallest laptop on the market, the ThinkPad X61s is one of the smallest Core 2 Duo options we've seen and is definitely compact enough to carry every day.
While most manufacturers have converted their ultraportable lines to wide-screen displays, Lenovo has outfitted the ThinkPad X61s with a lightweight 12.1-inch standard-aspect (4:3) screen. While we've definitely come to love a wide-aspect ratio (16:9), we also appreciate that the ThinkPad X61s offers a bit more screen real estate than, for example, the 10.6-inch wide-screen Fujitsu LifeBook P7230, while keeping a smaller design than the 12.1-inch wide-screen Toshiba Satellite U205. The display on the ThinkPad X61s is remarkably bright (222 cd/m² in our Labs measurement); its 1,024x768 native resolution doesn't exactly send shivers down the spine, but it does suffice. The screen's matte finish minimizes reflections, making it a winner for typical office productivity work.
Though most ultraportables sacrifice key size to fit a smaller case, the ThinkPad X61s's keys are large and very comfortable for extended typing. Our only complaint is that the right-side Alt and Ctrl keys are a bit narrow--annoying if you're accustomed to using shortcuts. As with all ThinkPads, the X61s includes a red TrackPoint pointing stick--there is no touch pad--and three mouse buttons (the center acts as a scroll button). Above the keyboard are basic volume controls as well as the very helpful blue ThinkVantage button, which launches a suite of system maintenance, power management, connectivity, and other utilities. Tucked beneath the lip of the lid is a nifty light that illuminates the keyboard in dim environments. A fingerprint reader below the keyboard lets you securely log in to Windows and your company network with just the swipe of a finger. Companies that need even more security can take advantage of the ThinkPad's new 32-bit hard-drive password protection as well as the option to disable the laptop's input and output ports to prevent the transfer of data.

* Available only with optional UltraBase dock, which would add $270 to price of our review unit.
By virtue of its slender case, the Lenovo ThinkPad X61s has just the basic ports and connections to keep business travelers productive on the road. Worth noting: the ThinkPad X61s lacks a built-in optical drive, so you'll have to purchase the X6 UltraBase dock (which would bring our review unit's price up to $2,234) in order to get a DVD burner. This may be a deal breaker for some, but we actually like having the option of paring down our system to the bare essentials for travel, particularly given how rarely we actually use a disc drive. Like many business laptops, the ThinkPad X61s includes a convenient hardware on/off switch for its Wi-Fi radio.
The $1,964 Lenovo ThinkPad X61s we tested included a low-voltage Core 2 Duo L7500 processor built on Intel's latest Centrino Pro platform. It also runs Windows Vista Business, though companies who haven't yet made the switch to Microsoft's latest operating system can choose Windows XP for the same price. We were pleased with the ThinkPad X61s's performance on CNET Labs' application benchmarks, where it kept pace or finished slightly ahead of systems with normal-voltage Core 2 Duo processors and Intel's previous-generation platform. Unsurprisingly, the ThinkPad X61s largely outpaced its ultraportable competition, the Sony VAIO TXN17P and Fujitsu LifeBook P7230, both of which are built on Core Solo processors. For business users who multitask heavily or spend a lot of time working with Microsoft Office applications, the ThinkPad X61s provides dual-core performance in a lightweight, compact package.
Our Lenovo ThinkPad X61s included an eight-cell high-capacity battery that extends 1 inch off the back of the machine; this battery added $50 to the price, and we think it's worth it. On our taxing DVD battery drain test, the ThinkPad X61s lasted an impressive 3 hours, 9 minutes (you can expect to go a little longer if you're usage is largely office productivity applications). That wasn't quite enough to top the remarkable 4-hour, 54-minute battery life achieved by the Sony VAIO TXN17P/B (which included a smaller, LED-backlit display and a single-core processor), but the ThinkPad X61s did outlast the Fujitsu LifeBook P7230 and the Toshiba Satellite U205 by 36 minutes or more. Lenovo has also bundled the ThinkPad X61s with its new BatteryStretch software, which lets you micromanage power settings and may help you squeeze a few more minutes out of the battery. (CNET did not test this feature; read more about our test settings here.)
As Lenovo has moved toward offering built-to-order systems, the company has dropped the baseline warranty for ThinkPads to a single year. Reasonably priced upgrades add coverage for accidental drops or spills and LCD damage for up to four years. Lenovo's support Web site includes the expected troubleshooting topics, driver downloads, and user guides. The site lacks interactive features such as customer forums or the chance to chat in real time with a technician.

wonderful ultra-portable
by kalev hinrich on December 25, 2007
Pros: one of the most powerful ultra-compact notebooks on the market (Centrino Pro), excellent keyboard, lightweight and small, lengthy battery life, low voltage processor, etcetera
Cons: screen resolution, aspect (4:3 instead of widescreen), and no LED, no optical drive, the 8-cell battery sticks out the back a little, incredibly ugly (but it's a ThinkPad)
Summary: 1.8 ghz, LV
3 gigs of RAM

3 gigs of RAM
120 5400rpm HD
1 gig turbo memory
Vista Business 32 bit
With all the negative reviews on here, I was kind of scared when ordering the x61s, but I haven't had any of the trouble mentioned elsewhere: No Lenovo shipping delays (mine arrived two weeks before it was supposed to be shipped), no "blue screens of death" due to the turbo memory drivers, and no hardware breakdowns. Mine works fine, and I'm even using the scandalous Windows Vista.
Battery life is one aspect that was perplexing at first because everyone was reporting different numbers, and I wish to clear up some confusion. I have the 8-cell battery w/ Vista Business, and I can get about 5-6 hours surfing the net, typing on a word processor, listening to music, etc. But, if I turn Aero off (the fancy display settings of Vista) and use the traditional Windows view, turn off the wireless, mute the volume, and use battery stretch, I can get over 9 hours while typing on Microsoft Word. That's incredible.
The screen is the weakest part of this laptop: it has the normal 4:3 aspect, no LED backlighting (it isn't an option), and relatively poor resolution (although it doesn't look that bad given the incredibly small screen). I don't mind the resolution or standard aspect ratio since I use mine for mainly word processing and surfing the web, but a LED backlight would be nice . . . it would significantly improve the battery life even more. This will probably be the next thing updated on Lenovo's new line of laptops.
This laptop is intended to be a business and travel laptop. I'm a grad student who needed a functional, word-processing laptop with a long battery life. I'm on the go and spend many hours in the library, in public parks, and in coffee houses studying and typing papers. This was the ideal laptop for me, and I'm not sad I bought it. If you want to do video/audio editing, get a MacBook. If you want an entertainment laptop, get a desktop replacement. But if you need a small work-horse which gets incredible battery life and absolutely mops-up on the benchmark testing, get this one. It's not pretty like the MacBooks (as all my Mac friends consistently remind me), but it sure gets the job done. I chose functionality over aesthetics. It's an absolutely wonderful ultra-portable notebook.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

I configured it with all the options, the price was great and it arrived 2 weeks early. It shipped in 1 week!
Try one out with the touchscreen, you will love it!!2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: This is my first laptop and my understanding is that laptops should be portable. This is a really small and lightweight laptop but not small enough to become uncomfortable for prolonged use. So far it has been very stable and the OS is running easily. I was happy to get this machine with XP Pro and not Vista!
What I like: small enough to always carry it around with me. Has everything connectivity you need - LAN, WiFi, Bluetooth. SD card reader for my camera and 3x USB. HDD is big enough and keyboard is normal size so you can actually work on this laptop with not much of a compromise.
What I don't like: The standard battery has very short life - 2 hours will be the max! You have to buy extended battery and the laptop becomes much heavier and bigger.
The screen is not very bright. I don't care that it's not wide screen but it could be brighter. You will not get great sound from this little fellow but what do you expect from an ultra portable with single speaker.
The build quality is not great also. The back side of the screen especially when the laptop is closed bounces back like it's made from cardboard.
Overall I am happy with my purchase. It definitely was not cheap!! However it provides all the functionality I need in a small package. Of course all is not perfect but after all it never is

Summary: I thought I'd never buy a thinkpad. They are f-ugly and they make me yawn. Plus NO TOUCHPAD! Who likes using the red nipple? Well, you actually get used to it in minutes.
No where else is there a 2.6 lb. laptop that performs THIS well at around $1000. After configuration it came out to $1200 (upgraded to 100GB 7200RPM HD, 2GB RAM, and Bluetooth). This thing is lightening fast. Sony starts at $2100, Fujitsu is a rip off, and no one else comes close.
My only gripes are that I wish it was widescreen, s-video out, and 4 in 1 reader vs. just SD reader. Some say the speaker is weak but actually it's quite loud. No bass really but it can project.
Vista is still quirky.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: As a law school student, I rely on my computer for EVERYTHING. This computer has made my life miserable over the last two months (my computer keeps crashing and I lose information). I've called customer service over 10 times and their incompetent technical support people are unable to help me! Now they tell me that they need me to ship the laptop in to their service center and be without a laptop for 7 - 10 days!!!! It's a brand new laptop - I've not downloaded anything on it. I've not uploaded anything on it. It is exactly as it came out of the factory and I've had the problem since the first day I opened the box. DO NOT BUY A LENOVO UNLESS YOU WANT LOTS OF PROBLEMS AND NO ONE TO HELP YOU!!!
Updated
This is the worst laptop I have ever purchased. I've had problems with it since the first day it arrived (it is only two months old now). The main problem (although I've had several other smaller issues) is that the laptop crashes 5 times a day! Technical support isn't able to help me and I cannot get anyone from sales (who have the ability to offer a refund or exchange) to actually return my call. This week my laptop crashed again and when I went to access my files, I learned that the whole "my documents" directory was missing. ALL OF MY FILES WERE GONE. As a law school student, I depend on my laptop. It is my life and when my files were gone, I lost hours and hours of irreplaceable work. I went and purchased a new (NON-IBM-LENOVO) laptop this weekend and on Monday I will once again be calling the Sales department to try to get my money back. I'm not anticipating any success because I've not had any luck for the last two months. AVOID LENOVO LIKE THE PLAGUE because once they get your money - they leave you to deal with the problems of their faulty device.3 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Yes, you really do get around 8 hours of battery life under normal usage (web browsing, word processing, etc.) if you turn down the brightness on the screen and get the large 8 cell battery. The 4x3 screen is great for everything except watching movies, it just gives you more space. I have very few gripes, all of which are relatively minor. The first is that I ordered this thing on June 4th and it arrived on July 31st. So don't order the x61s if you need it urgently. The other problem I had was that I could not get the computer to recognize the optical drive in the ultrabase if I connected the computer to the ultrabase while the computer was on. You have to either connect it and restart or connect it while it is off. Also, some people might not like that the x61s only has a trackpoint instead of a touchpad, I personally prefer the trackpoint so it's not an issue for me. Compared to other ultraportables, the x61s trumps most all of them on price, speed, and battery life. I would definitely buy again.

Beside the regular features I upgraded it to 2 GB memory and the new advanced feature the intel Turbo chip and 160 GB. Top of the edge configurations.
The product arrived late. Beside that I had received only 143 GB the fracto. But most importantly it's extreamly slow works slower than my 4 year old comupter withoutr me even having to install anything. Beside that the sound is very faint.
I contacted lenovo they don't want to take itr back without a 15 % restocking fee since I opened the box.
How am i supposed to know it's not working with a closed box?
Still fighting with them a nightmare !
Be aware dont even consider very pricy top of the edge with very poor performances.2 out of 4 users found this user opinion helpful.

A perfect ultraportable

Summary: The thinkpad x61s just gets it right. If you're looking for a simple, highly functional, professional, sturdy, portable workhorse machine, this is it. People looking for a laptop to play new PC games, watch movies on a 300 foot glossy screen, or perform advanced CAD tasks will be sorely dissapointed. That's not what this laptop is for. The standard aspect screen makes the laptop considerably more portable than a comparable widescreen version, and more vertical space means less scrolling on webpages and text documents in general. The usefulness of the trackpoint is ultimately an issue of personal preference, but personally I find it MUCH more comfortable, more accurate, and faster than a touchopad. Give it a few days and you'll be converted. Battery life is phenomenal, even with wifi on-you can comfortably get 6 hours. it's built like a rock, and I find the simplicity of the design very attractive, although many people find thinkpads to be the ugly duckling of the ultraportable bunch. If you want to carry around a shiny 'futuristic' looking platter then that's fine too. Go get a dell or hp (which are fine alternatives if you're looking for a more general-use laptop, but also bulkier and not as well made). The keyboard is excellent, I can touch type comfortably without any problems. Also, the lack of an optical drive is really not a problem whatsoever, unless you'll be installing a lot of software. You can purchase an external cd-rom drive for about 30 bucks that can stay at your desk whenever you need it. The figerprint reader works flawlessly. The graphics card is the intel GMA X3100, which, while integrated, works fine for lots of last-gen games on medium-lowish settings, as well as emulators. Overall it's just a wonderful machine.
