- The Surface Pro's gutsy design successfully reinvents the Windows 8 laptop by cramming an ultrabook experience into the body of a 10-inch tablet. Those wanting to go all-in on the tablet experience won't regret buying the Surface Pro, but we're holding out for a future, more polished generation of the device.

The good: The Microsoft Surface Pro fits a full ultrabook experience in a compact 10-inch tablet. Thanks to the ingenious Type and Touch covers, it offers a comfortable interface and typing experience. The clean, crisp design and sharp 1080p screen rise above the competition.
The bad: The battery life is disappointing, and more ports would be nice. The 64GB model barely has any free storage. It costs as much as a regular laptop, especially because the cool keyboard cover isn't included by default.
The bottom line: The Surface Pro's gutsy design successfully reinvents the Windows 8 laptop by cramming an ultrabook experience into the body of a 10-inch tablet. Those wanting to go all-in on the tablet experience won't regret buying the Surface Pro, but we're holding out for a future, more polished generation of the device.

Snappy, sexy and sufficient for most users.
by whatjeffthinks on February 7, 2013
Pros: A clean and elegant design that feels durable. It's quite snappy with no lag yet. It offers tablet features with the convenience of a full scale laptop.
Cons: The battery life is short when compared to your most popular tablets. Not having a permanently attached keyboard can frustrate those who intend to use this device as their, "On the couch laptop". Finally, the speakers are not the greatest.

Summary: The Surface Pro is an exceptional device for many users. It is easy to use and comfortable to operate. Although the battery is not the greatest, one must stop comparing it to an iPad or an Android tablet. The Surface pro offers alot to its user and can be a very productive tool. Can it replace your MacBook Pro? That depends on what you use your MacBook Pro for. Can it replace your MacBook Air? I can tell you this much, it will put up a good fight. Reviewers should compare apples to apples and not apples to oranges. The Surface Pro packs a nice processor, a very responsive screen and still gives you a solid operating system. A great device but not perfect just like every device that exists. No device will ever be perfect, you will still find something that could use improvement but that's the way technology works.

A tablet that will replace my notebook.
by TigerJ8 on February 12, 2013
Pros: - Fast, 6 seconds boot up
- Small-ish
- Good looking screen
- Stylus - gotta love digital ink!
- Good Wifi performance
- Well made, feels special - rare, at the moment
- Can run all programs and apps I use (Office, Autodesk Inventor, Lightroom, etc.)Cons: - Runs warm, despite having fans
- Need longer battery life
- Stylus off by 1 mm when used at a slanted angle (my normal writing posture)
- Touch cover does not magnetically stick on to the glass, nor the backSummary: I was fortunate enough to be able to pick one up on the release day. So far, I have been very pleased with the purchase. I'm an engineering student ...
Summary: I was fortunate enough to be able to pick one up on the release day. So far, I have been very pleased with the purchase. I'm an engineering student looking for a machine that I can use like an iPad, but also have the option to run all my design and programming applications. The surface pro suits the need well. So I decided to give it a try. It's very fast, in fact it feels significantly faster than my 2 year old 15" MBP (w/ Intel SSD). With my software installed, and unnecessary start up programs disabled, the computer starts up in 6 seconds, and shuts down in 1. The user interface is butter smooth. The metro side is good for content consumption, like reading, browsing, listening to music, and watching videos. The traditional desktop is good for getting work done such as office, solidworks, inventor, matlab, etc. I don't mind the small buttons on the screen as I can always use the stylus, mouse, or touchpad. It's worth mentioning that the touch cover takes a lot of practice if you want to type fast. I'm glad to finally see the Apple-like butter smooth, colorful user experience brought to a Windows device.
Aside from my positive first hand experience of the device, there are a few issues I want to mention.
- The device runs warm. Although it feels cooler coming from a macbook pro, which also ran hot, i didn't have to write anything on the macbook. I use the stylus on the surface pro a lot, and having less heat on the glass could significantly improve the experience. It's tolerable, but I hope it ran cooler.
- The stylus is not 100% accurate in day-to-day use, even when calibrated. It is technically very accurate even on factory calibration settings - if the stylus is perpendicular to the screen, but the average person doesn't write like that. We usually write at a 45 degree-ish angle. At this angle, the point on the screen is slightly off - usually about 1mm off depending on the location of the screen. This takes some time to get use to, but once I got used to it, my writing definitely look nicer and cleaner on the surface than on paper. The texts are so smooth and bright that they literally pop out of the screen at you.
- The capacitive start button is annoying in portrait mode as my hand always accidentally hit it when I copy notes (unless i flip the device 180 degrees), or read. I understand that it looks good to place the button at the center of the device, but I wish that it was in one of the corners, or that it was a physical button
- I would also like to have a physical orientation lock. The orientation sensor is EXTREMELY sensitive. Leaving the orientation on automatic is impractical.. and WILL drive you insane! FYI, the lock button is usually 4 taps away
- Battery.. It's usually around 4.5 hours for me. I just plug it in whenever I do anything computational intensive. It isn't a big issue for me as I have access to plugs often. I do wish it lasts several hours longer though. So that I won't ever have to think about it.
- The magnetic power cord takes a little getting used to. Unlike the mac one, which will almost fly in at a distance. It seems that the tolerances on the surface are a little too tight and it definitely takes some getting used to.
- Finally, like all devices with a high PPI, initially a lot of applications not optimized for this will look slightly blurry. This should get better with time.
Overall, definitely one of my favorite computers. The things it can do well far outweighs the things it can't. I would recommend this device for anyone who value content creation as much as content consumption, appreciate good quality design. Also, don't stray away from the power grid too often.5 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

After buying, I immediately sold my iPad & MacBook Pro.
by VanAwesome on February 22, 2013
Pros: FAST. FAST. FAST!
Works with regular PC games. Not limited to tablet games.
Amazing performance.
Beautiful display.
Battery Life is much better than any notebook I've ever used. Lasts my entire work day with off and on use.Cons: I wish the charger had some built in cable management (like the flip out tabs on the macbook pro charger)
Fans a little loud when doing processor intense work. Better than having it heat up and burn my fingers like my iPad 3 did though.Summary: I really love the Surface Pro. Summary: I really love the Surface Pro. It's frustrating to see all the Apple Fanboy reviews around the web refusing to give the Surface credit where credit is due. This device is revolutionary. It's everything that I had hoped the iPad would be.
I can't believe I forgot to mention the Pen! The Pen is the best part!
I haven't owned a windows device in nearly 10 years, I've been exclusively Mac ever since they announced OSX. However, I have to hand it to Microsoft and praise them with their achievement. They've managed to make a fun, media centered device, that's still every bit as useful as a laptop. They didn't just make a larger version of a windows phone and call it a day (I'm looking at you iPad) they made a productive tool, that's fun.
I immediately sold my 3rd Gen. iPad and MacBook Pro as I will no longer be requiring their services.
To all the skeptics out there saying that MS manufactured the sold out status of the Surface Pro, I can tell you that I saw the waiting list at my local Microsoft store with 300+ names on it.
Updated on Feb 22, 2013
My wife owns a Wacom Cintiq, and says that the Surface Pro's pen is even MORE responsive than her Cintiq. I would agree, but I've never used her Cintiq. I have used many Graphics Tablets, and having the ability to draw right on the screen is awesome. It works great with Autodesk Sketchbook pro, and there are a bunch of apps in the windows store that support the pen.
As of right now, however, the pen's impressive pressure sensitivity is not recognized by Adobe products. Which is a real shame. It's definitely possible, since it works so well with Sketchbook Pro, a drawing app that is every-bit as good FOR DRAWING (not photo editing) as photoshop, if not better.
I really hope either Adobe or Microsoft updates soon.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

The best and most powerful tablet.

Pros: - great carry-around 64-bit Core i5 Dual Core computer.
- Full HD screen (1920 x 1080p)
- Digitizer pen
- Can run old PC programs (my company's s/w works, so is mine)
- Win 8 Pro
- great build quality using VaporMg casing
- fastCons: 128GB is more than enough but I wish they had offered a 256GB version. I will gladly pay more for that option.
I also wish it has 2 USB ports. This is more of a wish list and not a negative.Summary: Two thumbs way up. There is nothing like it right now.

The weight and it is a non-issue. Battery life depends on your usage. One of the PC magazines reported 7-hr battery life so the spec is very conservative.
I have never felt the fan turn on and the case is very cool to the touch. May depend on the software you are running.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Finally able to work on the go with a small sleek device that does it all, I was hesitant to jump on the first gen but have no regrets! I intend to upgrade to surface pro if haswell improves battery life and bulk.
It is well worth the price, and the pros definitely outweigh the negatives!!
Overall it is a great tablet, the most uncompromising tablet experience I have ever had!1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

A tablet with the heart of an ultrabook

Summary: This thing is great. I originally had the Surface RT but was sick of the restrictions that came along with and the fact that it had a desktop view was just teasing. I sold it and upgraded to the Pro and its world of difference. The screen is noticeably more sharp and performance is snappier, no lag at all. My only problem is the battery (big surprise there) and the fact that some applications (iTunes, Avast, etc.) look fuzzy on the screen. This is probably due to scaling and hope that as time goes by, updates will come along to fix it. Other than that, if you want a Windows tablet with no restrictions, this is your best bet.

It's Very Good
by thisistheslam on March 15, 2013
Pros: Full HD screen, stylus input, palm block tech prevents mis-touches while writing, USB 3.0, mini Display port, Bluetooth 4.0, optional type cover is fantastic, same PC hardware found in ultrabooks, manages to keep from being too heavy
Cons: Battery life could be a little longer, on the pricier side

Summary: If you're looking for a tablet that can do it all, the Surface Pro is your only reasonable option compared to the likes of Android and Apple offerings. This tablet has the largest application palette, mostly because it offers the entire world of software online on top of its growing Windows 8 store. Had Microsoft found a more cost-effective way, or just bundled in the type cover in the package, we'd all be singing the praises of Pro AND buying one immediately. But for $999 for the more-sought-after 128GB model, it will keep many from enjoying the fruits of full PC computing. The battery isn't hitting the standards of what many have come to expect from mobile products. Then again, competitors are running ARM tablets that use considerably less power and run considerably slower in comparison. It becomes a trade off: battery life for faster computing and multitasking. Many will argue this is an acceptable fate. The battery rates for 5 hours of use (depending on how you use the tablet). The Surface becomes a solid 5-star product if Microsoft can improve upon its design with a 2nd gen product that bumps the battery life a couple hours, comes in a little cheaper (or offers more in the package, so we're not dropping $1300 with accessories), and maybe shave a couple tenths of a pound. But those are the only gripes. This product is seriously good and the pen input is incredible! I could draw for hours and I'm a terrible artist!

Surface Pro is an amazing tablet and PC.
by LightSpeedTech on March 12, 2013
Pros: More powerful then most tablets. Able to run both windows 8 apps and standard software. Lighter then most laptops. Pen is amazing to use with onenote. Perfect with microsoft office 2013. USB 3.0 is fast. Display is amazing.
Cons: Battery life under high power task is less then optinaml. Display is a little bit small. It is a bit heavy but much lighter then a laptop. Windows 8 glitches that are more with OS problems then with the surface pro. Would love to upgrade SSD

Summary: Ill start first by saying this device is not for everyone. If you are a student, teacher, buissness person, IT or anyone that needs a super protable windows PC/ tablet this is a very good choice. For others, a tablet or laptop would be better. I am a student/ photographer and this fits both my uses almost perfectly. As a student i take notes using my onenote 2013 with the stylus. Complex chemical diagrams to CPU designs are no longer a challenge to record. As a photographer, having lightroom 4.3 and photoshop CS6 on location via a light and protable tablet means i can edit on site and save me extra work at editing back at the studio. USB 3.0 makes file transfers with my proable SSD very quick. Quick note on the storage, do not buy the 64gb, the 128 is much better deal and a recived my unit with 98 GB of stoagre. I have a small messenger bag that also holds my SSD so i dont mind carrying an extra drive, i did before using my 17inch gaming laptop anyways. The stylus and pen are amazing in lightroom and photoshop. Would i like to have pressure sensor working in CS6, yes , do i need it as a photographer, no so that wasnt a problem with me. I carry this tabelt with eveywhere, even in the school caff playing civ 5 at lunch, it amazes people that a tablet this small cam be this powerful. People who use Ipads are amazed at the speed of a Core I5 ivy bridge processor and this should be no suprise that this PC is FAST LIKE BLAZING FAST for web borwsing and multimedia. Speakers and camera, i never use them so i cant say much about them. All in all, if you want a powerful PC that is protable yet can run FULL windows 8 software with a core i5 processor, this is a strong contender.

Summary: I have had this device for three weeks and am impressed with its capability as an enterprise-level machine. I use Metro for quick access to simple-medium intensity tasks and Desktop for more in depth work. There is definitely a learning curve adjusting to the duality of the operating system not unlike early versions of Windows and DOS. There have been criticisms of the battery life. I have the 128GB version and routinely get about 7-8 hours of usability without intensive audio/video use. I have tried to integrate the entertainment side of Windows 8 with my Windows 8 Phone device-this has been frustrating. Xbox Music can be frustrating to use and cross-platform integration not entirely straightforward. Overall, very happy with the device allowing for some software issues to be worked out in the future.
