But while its small, its not micro. So it IS thick and it can get heavy in your hands. Also, its not ergonomic so typing is bad. Doesnt help it has a bad keyboard. Battery life drains like a sports car. Turning it on goes from 100% to 94% and about 1% per minute. Sounds bad but its not for its size. It just makes you feel bad that you see it dropping. Also, its not easy to use. You can't really use the keyboard and mouse like a normal computer. Once you think about it, you'll know what I mean.
Don't get me wrong, its a computer and works fine. Jus not as good as a laptop, but really good when you need a computer and not a pda.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: This device works mostly on the EDGE network by Cingular. First, you are either restricted to Cingular (which did poorly in a recent comparison by Consumer reports), or it is difficult to switch the SIM card. Second, EDGE technology is slow compared to EVDO by Sprint or Verizon. Third, Cingular has very limited fast 3 G services. Overall, it may be a great device, but can be used properly in only a few locations. This is contradictory with the intended use of the device. CNET should have pointed this out.
Updated
My previous opinion was written based on the research I had done. After spending 15 min. with the UX-180P, I have a splitting headache from trying to read the small print. Trying to increase the fonts, does not help much, neither does increasing the icon size (because then the icons wont fit on the screen). I am returning it today. If you have 20/20 vision, it might be worth it.
OTOH, my PDA does nearly all the same things..so why bother with this!Updated
Just came back after returning it at Best Buy. Cost of my error in buying (online) the UX-180 without seeing it : Restocking fee: 255$ !!!. I dont know if it is only SONY which charges the huge restocking fee, but in future I will also look at other vendors.3 out of 6 users found this user opinion helpful.

Excellent and worth the money

Summary: I have been looking at, playing with and buying everything from PDAs to early vaios that were small (8" screen) to mobile PC to UMPCs to my currently in use Treo. They all had limitations in capability, compatibility with software, too small a screen, etc. They all had a purpose and I found a niche or used them for a small segment, but the UX180P does it all. I was concerned about the screen being big enough for use in full fledge PC activities - it is small, but AMAZINGLY clear. When necessary it can connect to a full monitor or projector.
I wondered about the price vs other newly coming UMPCs(with fewer features and a scaled down OS). With full XP Pro, biometrics, Bluetooth, WLAN, WWAN, stylus, mouse, USB, etc. It has more features or capabilities than most laptops - go price a Dell or Toshiba with all these features, it will be over $2,000.
I bought this thinking I would take it on some of my business trips where I did not anticipate needing the full PC laptop - I can not think of a thing I would need my other laptop for that this one does not do, and it will literally hang off my belt.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Wonderful piece of kit

Pros: Very portable, great screen, full feature set, good accessories included
Cons: Desperately needs a right shift button, too much junkware installed out of the box, only 512MB RAM

Summary: I got one of these imported into the UK from the US and have to say that I am very impressed. I was originally looking at the OQO, but was worried about the performance of the Crusoe chip in it as I previously had a TC1000 tablet which was just too slow. When the UX was announced with the Core Solo 1.2GHz, I decided to investigate it a bit more.
I currently use it for on the move sysadmin tasks around (and between) multiple sites. I use MS OneNote 2007 Beta to make audio and text notes in meetings and it serves very well as a mobile information collection device.
My major qualm is that it's missing a right shift key, which makes symbols like @ (Shift+2) hard to type on the keyboard with just thumbs. It only has 512MB of RAM which may also stop it from running power apps, but for day to day office tasks whilst on the go, it can't be beaten.
Comes with a nice range of accessories including a fully featured dock (video, network, USB 2 and Firewire), a video/network dongle, and a case. All in all a wonderful bit of kit and worth all the effort to import from the States.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Recently tried this unit, which was purchased by my company over a year ago. Great little unit that comes with integrated camera, speakers, keyboard and mouse. Has fingerprint software that allows you to log on using your fingerprints (no need to type in any passwords). It's great to bring with you in lieu off your laptop on vacations (airports, etc), but if you want to do work on it, forget it. The small screen will give you headaches from squinting so much (price you pay for having a compact laptop). I would enjoy this more and use it more if it doesn't lag so much, doesn't crash if I leave it running for more than 3hrs.

On the surface:
This computer is honestly pretty darn cool. It’s a fully functional PC computer that fits in the palm of your hand, and is about the size of a paperback. It even features an aski keyboard and touch sensitive screen. This is truly the gadget for the person who has to have the latest and greatest…And at the same time it is appropriate for that person because for the most part it is completly useless on is own.
Okay so saying completely useless is an over statement, but don’t expect to use this as your primary computer…or even backup…I guess my problem is the insane level of dedication it takes to use this thing. For example the keys are very small, and flat which means that not only do you have to type with your thumbs, but you can’t tell when you have touched a key which means constantly going back to delete what you just wrote because you either skipped a letter or hit two keys by accident.
Similarly having to type with your thumbs, means that you constantly have to look down at the keyboard to be sure you are hitting the right keys, and therefore do not catch the inevitable typos until you are much further along, making correcting mistakes more difficult than usual.
You can use the included stylus to manipulate the mouse, touch the screen with your fingers, ore use joy stick located on the side of the unit. Unfortunately all of these options prove to be difficult and time3 consuming. The joy stick seams to lack sensitivity, and users will have difficulty using it to steer the mouse around. Similarly the finger method involves very careful tapping with the corner of a nail,, coupled with a mass of dirty finger smudges on the nearly impossibly small screen. The stylus solves most of these problems, but with the added cost of time. Using the stylus requires retrieval from the PDA styled slot in the back. That motion requires that you take your hands off of the keyboard.
Sony has also included some pretty neat software with this machine. There is a special button on the edge which brings up a set of finger sized options. Including a music player, and the option of using one of the two built in cameras.
There are also controls through which the sound and display options can be conrolled including entering portrait display mode in which the screen is rotated ninety degrees.
The news is not all bad though. This little computer features fantastic battery life if you leave it in hibernation mode most of the time, and the fact that it is running an almost fully functional version of Win XP makes it actually usable for getting something real done in a pinch. For example I have written this entire review using a sony vaio 180ux.
Okay…so we have established that this computer is not meant to be a serious laptop replacement, so what is it? I think its an over grown PDA/camera/mp3 player. Unfortunately there are smaller things out there that can do that all those jobs better. In the past I have always complained about the fact that PDAs could not run windows…now that the sony 180ux has come along I can see just how impractical of a request that was.
Personally I believe the major problem with this machine is all with the interface. It is too small to be a practical work machine, but much to big to be a high tech multi-toy.
The truth is that this little computer simply came out about three years too early. It is crushed in between purposes. It is too big to serve as a camera and PDA given the quality of cell/camera phones, and the idea of using this as a practical computer is in the least daunting. In reality this is a cool gadget that most of us could probably do without for right now. Of course if sony could simply make the whole thing faster, and about the size of an apple I-pod, or maybe even a PSP… -

(shipsblog.com) and so far I have no complaints. Mine is tied with Cingular Wireless which works well in my region (upstate NY). I did buy a USB keyboard to facilitate typing, the built in keypad is for short notes only, unless you have tiny fingers. Great device, well designed, kudos to Sony for this one.
