The good: Distinctive design; large touch pad, great battery life.
The bad: Bulky battery sticks out awkwardly; big screen bezel dwarfs display; wimpy audio.
The bottom line: Toshiba finally enters the Netbook market with the Mini NB205. It's got an upscale, distinctive look and a good keyboard/touch pad combo, but also weak audio and a big, bulky battery.
Toshiba is more than a little late to the Netbook party, and its inaugural effort (at least aimed at U.S. consumers) is the slick-looking Toshiba Mini NB205, but an awkward six-cell battery and some of the worst audio we've heard on a Netbook may not justify the now-premium $399 price.
With a familiar set of components, including an Intel Atom N280 CPU (similar to recent Asus models, and a tiny step up from the N270), 1GB of RAM, Windows XP, and a 160GB 5,400rpm HDD, the NB205 hits all the Netbook marks, but one can find the Acer Aspire One AOD250 for $299 (which does trade down to the N270 CPU), or a longer-lasting, but less awkward, battery in the $398 Asus Eee PC 1005HA.
That said, the textured white design is a standout (other available colors are blue, brown, and pink), and the big touch pad and widely spaced, raised keys may feel more familiar to those used to traditional full-size laptops.

At first glance, the NB205 stands out from the Netbook crowd with a fingerprint-resistant white textured lid and a silver keyboard tray. It's a nice break from the glossy black systems we've seen from Asus, HP, and others. While not the slimmest Netbook we've seen, the chassis has a boxy, flat design with rounded corners, which makes for a nicely sophisticated look.
One of the most notable features on the NB205 is the keyboard. Breaking from the recent trend toward Apple- or Sony-style keyboards, with flat, low-profile keys, the NB205 goes for a raised keyboard, with widely separated tile keys. That's makes each key a little smaller, but the distance from letter to letter is close to what you'd find in a mainstream laptop keyboard. We had to take some time to get used to the new keyboard design, but eventually found it very easy and comfortable to use. However, some important keys get cut down a bit too much, including the Tab key, and the tilde key is awkwardly shoved in to the left of the spacebar, throwing off our touch typing.
Even better is the touch pad, a bit more than 3 inches wide, which is the biggest we've seen on a 10-inch Netbook. The oversize mouse buttons are also very useful, making for much easier screen navigation--there's nothing more frustrating than trying to navigate a tiny screen with a tiny touch pad.
The 10.1-inch wide-screen display offers a 1,024x600 native resolution, which is standard for Netbooks, although higher-resolution options will become more readily available from several PC makers later this year. The LED display helps make the lid thinner and uses less power, but the edges of the lid (what we call the screen bezel) extend far past the actual glass, making the screen feel smaller than it should.
| Toshiba Mini NB205 | Average for category [netbook] | |
| Video | VGA | VGA |

| Data | 3 USB 2.0 (one sleep-and-charge USB), SD card reader | 2 USB 2.0, SD card reader |

Toshiba outfits nearly all its laptops with sleep-and-charge technology, including one of the three USB ports on the NB205. That allows you to power or charge USB devices from that port, even if the laptop is sleeping, hibernating, or off. Bluetooth is included, but not the newer 802.11n flavor of Wi-Fi (although relatively few people have N-level routers).
One distracting feature was the system's audio, or lack thereof. The single speaker, located on the underside of the system, was nearly useless--even with the volume cranked all the way up, we could barely make out the audio from podcasts, music, or Web video.
Netbooks across the price spectrum tend to live within a rather narrow performance margin, and the Toshiba NB205 was no exception. However, while the slightly faster N280 version of Intel's Atom processor found in the NB205 (as well as the Asus Eee PC) helped the system do well in our single-app tests, the NB205 fell behind other Netbooks in our multitasking test (although no Netbooks, which all have single-core processors, do particularly well in this benchmark). Still, any of these current minilaptops offers enough computing power for the basic tasks for which they are designed--namely Web surfing, working on documents, and some basic multimedia playback--as long as expectations are kept appropriately modest.
The NB205 scores another hit with its battery life, running an impressive 6 hours and 14 minutes on our video playback battery drain test. Of course, we'd expect at least that much with the giant six-cell battery protruding a full inch from the rear of the system. Other Netbooks, such as the Asus Eee PC 1005HA manage to work in a six-cell battery without breaking the silhouette, but at the expense of an overall bulkier look.
The system includes an industry-standard one-year parts-and-labor warranty from Toshiba. Support is accessible through a 24-7 toll-free phone line, and an online knowledge base and driver downloads via Toshiba's Web site, which is among the better examples of support sites in terms of clarity and functionality.

Summary: Just picked up a blue/grey NB205 at Office Depot a few days ago. I charge when I go to bed and use on-and-off all day long. I'm quite impressed with performance; both long battery life and applications so far. Hulu and You-tube seem to stream fine. Did not have success with 720p-MKV file via VLC player, but that might be asking for too much. I do wish it had a little better sound; the tiny speaker under the front right is pretty weak. Just use headphones if you need the fidelity. Just connected my Motorola BT stereo headphones and it worked flawlessly. Yep, I love this little machine so far.

Summary: I was considering returning the machine because of the low sound volume but I was able to tweak a little more volume by increasing all the sliders in the equalizer located in the Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager. (I got there through control panel). I researched netbooks quite a while before deciding on this one. what did it for me was the battery life. I can just grab it and throw it in the car as we go out and not have to worry if I've charged it recently. I've found the hibernate feature really works like it should on this machine. You just close the lid and it saves your place and shuts down. The next time you use it the boot up takes only a fraction of the time a full boot would.

Summary: I bought this out of curiosity for the netbooks as well as to fill a need for a travel computer. I am coupling this machine with a 500GB pocket HDD. The first thing that I did was to install Windows 7 RC. I was skeptical at first but decided it wouldn't be too hard to revert back to XP if needed. Well so far, I do not see a reason to revert. Win 7 RC is running with no issues at all on this netbook. The software suite that comes installed from Toshiba is easy to download & reinstall from the Toshiba support site. The only one that did not work was the power monitor but there is no real need for that one anyway since windows gives you decent control of the power profiles as it is. All others are working great so far.
The next move was to install iTunes so I can keep my iPhone up to date and watch my movies on the computer versus the iPhone itself. Again, I was skeptical but all doubt was erased within the hour after copying my iTunes library from the external HDD to the aptly sized 160GB internal HDD. I have had no serious issues with iTunes either. The movies get minimally choppy if I have to switch from app to app like checking something on the web and then switching back to iTunes. Nothing worth being negative about though. So far so good with the NB 205.
I surf the web using Firefox 3.5 and that is running absolutely wonderfully right now. I did not have the means to install MS Office until I get back home so I opted for the OpenOffice.org suite. That is a suitable substitute at any juncture and it is working just fine for me right now. Its free and it the download/install was quick and painless.
After a couple of days of being plugged in, I decided to test the battery and found that it survived an entire day of on and off web browsing and standing by. I charged it over night and the following day I was able to watch Troy (Directors Cut) without any issues at all. It looked as good as expected on the LCD screen. Probably better than I thought it would. That was over 3 hrs and 15 mins long. I did shut down after that because I had a meeting to attend but in iTunes running a movie for that long on a single charge impressed me. I have not ran the battery to full depletion yet but may test that out later. I'll Troy followed by Braveheart to see if the battery can handle over 6 hours of iTunes movies.
I have used the USB ports extensively though. The two on the right work as expected but the sleep and charge port on the left made me proud as it was able to fully charge my iPhone while powered off and unplugged. When I woke the next morning my phone was full and the netbook still some battery life left when I booted it up.
I have not used the webcam for any vidchats yet but, I like the fact that it has one and it seems to work fine when I recorded a self interview for a work project. It's a little grainy but again it's nothing worth being negative about. My final positive thought is that the keyboard has far exceeded my expectations. I have typed this entire review on the netbook while listening to music via iTunes and there is no significant difference in touch typing here versus on a full size keyboard. Some strokes may be a bit tighter than others but overall it does not slow down my typing at all. The touchpad is the same as on any fullsize laptop.
The only real negatives that I have about this machine is the speaker. It is practically non existent. A set of earphones or small external speakers is a must for watching movies or listening to music. I am not sure what happened with in the sound department but they might as well have not even put a speaker in saved themselves a couple of buck in manufacturing.
I listed the large screen bezel as a con but it is only minimally so. It is unsightly but cosmetics don't affect functionality. It seems that screen could be almost a full inch larger but that may have affected the webcam and certainly would have affected the price. So, the 10.1 inch screen suits me fine and the large bezel is not that big of a deal.
Overall this is a strong machine and I am glad that I held out on netbooks until now. This was a well spent $349. I love the fact that runs Win 7 and the install was painless. The half star deduction was for the weak sound but I would have given 4.75 if that was an option. The speakers aren't work a 1/2 point but the system isn't perfect because of the speakers so I had to compromise there. I would recommend this system to friends and family and will probably buy one for my wife and son also. Hope this was helpful and happy shopping!2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Great battery, frustrating touchpad...
by hessyhess on August 29, 2009
Pros: - Great battery life for a compact, sub-$400 machine (7 hrs.)
- Good keyboard
- 3 usb ports, decent webcam and SD reader
- Runs decent with Windows 7, despite Atom processor
- Easy access to hard drive, WiFi card and RAM (/w torx screwdriver)Cons: - A bit slower than competing notebooks (hp Mini 5101, Asus 1005HA)
- Intel Atom performance
- Poor touchpad responsiveness (tried 2 models)
- Poor speaker volume
- Build quality vs. competing models (again, hp Mini 5101, Asus 1005HA)Summary: This is certainly a good candidate for anyone interested in a netbook, especially considering its super-long battery life. It's attractive, the glossy LCD is quite bright, and it's ...
Summary: This is certainly a good candidate for anyone interested in a netbook, especially considering its super-long battery life. It's attractive, the glossy LCD is quite bright, and it's quite thin, compact and light.
However, the Toshiba forums are filled with concerns over the touchpad, and I can confirm the validity of these concerns with the two models I've tried (with XP and WIndows 7, with and without touchpad drivers).
While the Alps touchpad is much larger than those in other netbooks, the sensitivity leaves much to be desired. The edges of the touchpad do not register swipes well. Even in the center, it just doesn't recognize my taps and swipes as well as other touchpads do. It make day-to-day usage frustrating. Uninstalling the Alps drivers seems to help this quite a bit, but then you lose the scrolling functions and tap zones. I suppose I could use a wireless or bluetooth mini-mouse, but that would add to the overall bulk of this package.
The Atom N280 leaves a bit to be desired, but it's still usable, especially with Windows 7. Don't expect Flash to run well, and definitely keep Aero disabled.
Other than that, this is a good netbook. The keyboard is a bit slippery, but otherwise great (even for larger hands); it also reflects the LCD light, eliminating the need for a keyboard backlight. The webcam, despite the low 0.3 MP resolution, is also decent.
Before buying this netbook, have a look at the Toshiba forums to see if/when Toshiba addresses the Touchpad issue. Google something like *Toshiba NB205 touchpad issues* and you'll see what I mean. If the touchpad issue is resolved, this thing deserves four stars for the price. In the meantime, definitely check out the Asus 1005HA -- I think it's a better netbook overall (at least for now).1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Virtually nonexistent problems, Great overall
by hengineer on June 28, 2009
Pros: Great Battery Life
Brightly LED lit screen
Fuller sized keyboard
Great size touchpad (almost size of normal laptop)
3 USB ports (sleep and charge is a boost!)
Full-size HDD - 160GB
1 GB RAM and its expandable to 2 GB
Quick bootingCons: Keyboard is a bit awkward at first (it may be wide, but its skinny)
Large "Margin" for the screen, looks like the screen should be larger.
Battery pack does extend a bit, but its only a minor issue.Summary: The Toshiba NB205 netbook is a great product showing that Toshiba saw what other companies did wrong and attempted to polish the design of the netbook.
The battery pack issue ...Summary: The Toshiba NB205 netbook is a great product showing that Toshiba saw what other companies did wrong and attempted to polish the design of the netbook.
The battery pack issue and fancy colors, while Mac-loving candy coaters like CNET may find these "design" pluses and minuses to me are a really minor issue. The battery pack only extends the netbook another inch or so off the back, and considering the size of my normal laptop (a 17.1" Clevo Desktop replacement monster), its perfect for traveling.
I just used it without charging it at all all day. I stayed in a hotel room and left it on, going back and forth to youtube, watching videos, spending time with my girlfriend, then going back. I didn't have to plug it in until late at night, showing its battery life prowess. CNET got 6 and a half hours battery life playing video, the netbook was advertised as having 9 hours 5 minutes battery life "normal usage", which I assume is just normal net browsing, not just video playing.
(I purchased this before CNET even had a page for it, I guess I jumped the gun, I saw its features and decided I HAD to have it).
Speaker IS a bit tiny, but for what I'd use it for, I'd probably have earphones or a headset anyway, so the speaker doesn't necessarily bother me.
Possible uses:
Airplane trips (who needs a PMP when you have a laptop with a much larger screen?)
Coffee House net browsing
Traveling computer (keeping in touch while on the road!)
GPS while on the road (driving around can whip out laptop, plug in my USB GPS unit and viola! instant location, on a 10.1" screen)
Its also great for keeping in touch with friends when playing games on my monster Clevo 17.1" Desktop replacement laptop.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Fast with good battery life.
by Gamerx178 on November 26, 2009
Pros: It is just the right size for me. It can handle older games like halo and has great battery life (while on vacation this week I left my charger in the room for a total of 7 hours and still had 23% of battery life left).
Cons: The Speakers are bad on here (and only on one side) so you will want to get headphones. Also the screen jumps around every once in a while when I'm typing for seemingly no reason at all (this is my first Netbook/Laptop so it may be my fault)
Summary: It is a great Netbook for what you pay and while not all the way up there with the big dogs it is very close behind.

Only 139GB of 160 GB Hard drive capacity is usable.

Summary: After searching for a netbook, I decided to purchase this one directly from Toshiba. They advertise that the hard drive has a 160 GB capacity. I just received this mini laptop yesterday and immediately checked the properties of the hard drive. The capacity of the hard drive is only 139GB. I then checked disk management and found that only 139.66GB is allocated to the C-drive and 9.38GB is allocated to the "HDDRecovery" partition. This still leaves 10.96GB of unaccounted for hard-drive space.
The tech support specialist (who's first language definitely wasn't English and was difficult to understand) tried telling me that this is where the System Restore features are kept. 10.96GB of space goes to system restore!!!!
If the advertisement read "160GB hard drive with 139GB of usable space" I would've been happier. A little truth in advertising would be nice as an industry standard, not just toshiba.
I also paid to have the memory upgraded from the standard of 1GB to 2GB. The computer came shipped with the 1GB installed. I had to install the 2GB myself and now I've got a 1GB RAM module that I paid for, but I have nothing to put it in. Good luck selling it back to Toshiba. -

Pros: Great battery life, LCD Screen is great in direct sunlight, Keyboard keys seperated for large handed users. Small transformer size!

Summary: The Battery life is amazing, if you are watching video or streaming video, subtract a couple hours from your 9:15min time. The design of the battery might bother some, but the trade off is worth it IMO. Bezel is wide compared to others, but it's a slight cosmetic issue. The keyboard is great, with the spaced keys it makes users with large hands or long fingers have a much easier time at typing. The display is great overall, usage in direct sunlight and indirect bright light isn't a problem, one bummer is the resolution tops out at 1024x677. Allot of programs I use have a 1024x768 minimum, making them unable to run on the netbook and forcing to find alternatives. The Touch Pad occasionally hangs and becomes slow to respond of a couple of seconds every once in a awhile. Generally, in my case, an indicator to do some basic PC maintenance. The small transformer [half the size of a pack of cigarettes] makes it that much easier to tote around on trips and for the minimalist. If a program loads on the unit, It runs very well on the netbook, just be aware of any resolution requirements, could be a deal breaker for some. Typical software package that needs to be trimmed down after start up. Audio is great through headphones or using the audio out, small pillow speaker on underside of unit is crappy and can only be used when in near complete silence. Don't expect anything from the audio of this device unless using external speakers or headphones!
Overall a great device for web surfing, watching videos and other basic office work. Worth the purchase price. -
