The good: Costs less than Microsoft Office 2003; Quattro Pro gets PDF export; WordPerfect strips metadata from documents and adds Yahoo Web search.
The bad: PDF-import feature needs work; no free phone support.
The bottom line: Corel WordPerfect Office X3 is a very good productivity suite with enough enhancements to warrant an upgrade. Microsoft Office users, though, should wait for Microsoft Office 12.

Corel X3, the natural next step
by edawson on January 23, 2006
Pros: PDF import, interface is bright and refreshing, the learning curve for upgraders will be short and there's even an interface for Word users. The file transition from WP11/12 to X3 was flawless.
Cons: The PDF import still needs some work, but it's a great first step. Long document (400+ pages) handling seems to be faster.
Summary: While the PDF import still needs some work, it's a great first shot for Corel at making PDF truly the "Portable Document Format." Don't expect miracles -- when ...
Summary: While the PDF import still needs some work, it's a great first shot for Corel at making PDF truly the "Portable Document Format." Don't expect miracles -- when you import complex PDF be prepared to edit (or my advice is to copy/paste and reformat). My expectation is that it will do a better job in later releases, but if you want to "re-purpose" something NOW from a PDF file, you'll be able to do it.
And that's just for starters.
As a long-time (since version 3.0) WordPerfect user, yes, I'm partial to it. But I use both Word AND WordPerfect, and the things that make WordPerfect a winner for its users, are still (or finally) there. Word will be playing catch-up.
Of course, your mileage may vary, as the caveat goes. Not everyone will like it, and for sure, not everyone will hate it! But imho, I think WP users of former versions will be pleasantly surprised, and the naysayers will follow their determination and find *something* wrong with it

Definitely my preferred office suite.

Summary: I use Microsoft Office at work and Word Perfect at home (with a dash of Open Office on my second machine!) Most of what I do is word processing - give me Word Perfect any time. Easier to turn off auto features, easily accessible "make it fit". Office is so frustrating to use I commonly bring my work home to use Word Perfect! By the way, I'm a teacher; I have a computer on my desk at school and do LOTS of word processing!

When you want to do it your way.

Summary: I was a WordPerfect user at version 5.1 and made the transition to MS Office about version 97. It always p***** me off that I had to do things Office's way, or else fight it the entire time. Went back to WP at version 12. Glad to be back. I know the look I want and I can create it in WP. I can't do that in Word. I have to say, though, Excel is superior to Quatro Pro in ease of use and in producing the charts, etc. I want. And the mail client is just too primitive.

Always has been the best

Summary: I'm a happy user (and enthusiast)of the X3 and all its antecedents--not a technical evaluator of alternative products. However, my experience with MS Office is sufficient to keep me solidly in the Corel and WP camp and wondering why there are relatively few of us. I use the pdf function all the time and find it very, very, very infrequently wanting.

I liked the layout. I like the usability. The techs and the pop up ads from the trial software assured me it was Vista compliant.
It is not. There is no patch. Customer service refuses to give me a work around and worse refuse a refund.
Word Perfect runs on Vista, but mail, spreadsheet, and presentations crash.
It is really sad to see a poor Vista product launch from a company that was, at one time, all about the customer.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: As a long-time WordPerfect user (since 1985!), I would buy this product today if it would run on OS X. I've used both WP and MS Doc for many years, and WP has always been a more capable, more intuitive, and more reliable program than MS Doc (ah, maybe there was a year there in the DOC to Windows conversion when this wasn't true). WP has been so much better for editing and formatting, even on would should be simple things such as controlling pagination, setting of leading adjustments, and the like.
Having given up on Windows because of all the security issues and having no reason to expect VISTA to arrive problem-free, I switched to Mac this past year. I'd love to have WP back as my main wordprocessor.1 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

by chubkisser on May 26, 2008
Pros: It's compatible with Word and not as expensive

Summary: There doesn't seem to be a way to turn off the "comment" fields that show up to the left. Regardless of where in a line you insert a comment, the comment field shows up to the left anyway.
The help file is very spare, and not very helpful at all. The sample pages within the help are so low-resolution, they're no help at all.
Terrible for writing scripts or copy editing. -
Constant "Unstable" problems within Quattro Pro

Summary: I am a long time user until X3 came along and I do NOT APPRECIATE fact that I can NEVER get this issue resolved. I have tried every thing to get my point across to Corel without success. I have bought Microsoft Office now and I have to transfer 100s of spreadsheets to Office Excel. I am really "sore" at Corel for treating me so badly, by "ignoring" my questions.
This could have been resolved but they are "NOT AT THE OTHER END OF THE LINE".

Called for customer support with regard to a template that suddenly would not function (ie data would not fill into the document after being entered into template window). Other reports of this exist online. Over the phone, Corel could not fix the problem. They suggested that I email the document and would hear from them in 4-5 days. After three weeks I called back. A different support tech answered the phone, indicated that they had received the template, it functioned, and that they had emailed me indicating everything worked fine. First, the product does NOT work "fine"; my belief is that Corel simply couldn't fix it upon receipt. Second, no one emailed me to confirm anything, thus, necessitating my follow up call three weeks later.
In summary, upon discovery of a technical glitch (which HAS been reported previously as indicated by other reports found online), Corel burried its head in the sand and lied to avoid providing true assistance.
I am quite disappointed. A simple, "We can't fix it" would have been appreciated.
Given the tech support issues, I would avoid this product. -
IT'S WORTHY THAN MS OFFICE 07

Pros: A LOT LESS THAN MS OFFICE 07

Summary: It can do almost anything MS Office from 97 - 07 can do which OpenOffice still lacks. How do you want your files and documents made? Think again, do we all need what all MS Office can offer while others also make many other usability that MS Office cannot offer with their suites? I do hopeful more people would wander and used whatever other people has to offer. WordPerfect should be the No. 1, followed with OpenOffice and MS Office as a 3rd runner.
