Apple Mac OS X Snow Leopard price range: $25.00

The good: Interface enhancements like Expose in the Dock and better file and folder viewing in Stacks make finding apps and files much easier. A completely overhauled QuickTime X now sports a cleaner interface and recording tools. The much-anticipated Exchange support across Mail, the Address Book, and iCal is huge for those who take their Macs to work.
The bad: Snow Leopard works with Intel Macs only; PowerPC users are out of luck; requires $29 upgrade fee.
The bottom line: Intel Mac users will like Snow Leopard's smartly designed interface enhancements, and its Exchange support is a must-have (especially with Outlook for Mac on the way). With a ton of technological improvements, Snow Leopard is worth the $29 upgrade fee.

All I love about Mac OS X made Better
by xbrando7 on August 29, 2009
Pros: Snow Leopard is an unbelievable performance upgrade. Any Apple application loads a lot quicker than it did on leopard, and documents load really quickly too. Shutdown/bootup times have been decreased on my MacBook and my dad's iMac. Cool new features
Cons: Installation wasn't as fast as Apple said it would be, took about 45 minutes per computer, Leopard installed faster. Other than a few new features, it's basically the same old Leopard.
Summary: Because of Snow Leopard, my two year old iMac and one year old MacBook both perform like brand new computers. I love the new features with expose, finder, and quicktime. ...
Summary: Because of Snow Leopard, my two year old iMac and one year old MacBook both perform like brand new computers. I love the new features with expose, finder, and quicktime. As I said before, all apple applications load faster. Dashboard widgets also load a lot quicker. Although this wasn't a very significant update, the price decrease helps to compromise. Apple just keeps raising the bar, and they definitely made a better leopard. If your thinking of upgrading, I would strongly recommend it, at such a low price how could you not? And If you have a PowerPC Mac, Snow Leopard is just another reason to move on to an Intel Mac.

Apple Delivers what it Promised
by kalel130 on August 29, 2009
Pros: Cheap, effortless to install, noticeable performance boost, and seamless integration with all existing information on machine.
Cons: Not enough GUI alteration to get non-tech savvy users.

Summary: Snow Leopard is exactly what Apple promised; hundreds of 'under the hood' changes for a more complete and stable performance. A quick glance at Apple's website will show you all of the features in the 10.6 but here's a quick rundown of the changes you WILL notice:
Quicktime X is integrated in Snow Leopard and the interface is absolutely beautiful. Simple and intuitive, it's as easy to use as the iPhone's quicktime player.
Expose now features a bottom bar that will show applications that have been minimized while activated.
The dock has changed the lay out of the Control + click with a more sleek black background. I don't like needing to go thru a separate options menu to get the options to "open at login, remove from dock, show in finder" options, but it looks better.
Anyone who has tried to select PDF text for copy/paste will be relieved with a refined text selection that actually does what you want it do.
Time Machine is quicker and seems all-around more integrated into Snow Leopard than before.
My machine seems to shut down in about 3 seconds which is wicked fast; and I used to think that 12 seconds was quick.
A nice addition is the complete printer/scanner driver database that Snow Leopard has.
Other than that, the plethora of other changes tend to be under the hood but I feel them with the additional speed my system seems to have gained. Everything now is running in native 64 bit which tends to speeds things up.
A personal grief I have with the OS is the lack of Air Tunes support for more than iTunes. Why can't my entire systems sound be patched thru the Air Port Express? Just a little annoyance that gets under my skin
One thing that I suppose I have issues with is that I think the general public won't see enough graphical change to understand why they should upgrade. I'm not advocating a 'fix-it even if it's not broken approach" but I wish Apple would have thrown in a couple graphical changes. For instance maybe the menu bar could have been redesigned slightly; just something for the non tech-savvy to look at and go "Oh pretty! I want it!"
Regardless I feel that Apple has taken the most advanced OS and perfected it to all it can be. Many Window Fans, including CNET's Ina Fried are quick to support the upcoming release of Windows 7 as a "Brand new operating system, not a refinement." It shows how far ahead Apple is, that it can take the time to make a great OS perfect. This is the last of the line for OS X and it was a grand finale. Apple's learned a lot in the past few years and it's difficult to imagine what OS 11 will include (but hopefully system wide support for Air Tunes :] ).
If you use Leopard, get this - you won't be dissapointed.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Get ready for winter, Snow Leopard is here to stay.
by Jhugen on August 28, 2009
Pros: The new enhancements are subtle but very powerful. The over all feel of the new updated OS seems to have been given a bit of pep and it seems to this reviewer to be faster. The greatest complement is, they didn't take any steps backwards.
Cons: Only con I could see is that the initial install quit and had to be restarted. Loss of a little time, but all files were intact and the second time around was flawless.

Summary: Bottom line is although its not going to blow your mind, it is a nice tweak for a great OS. The improved speed and subtle changes to menus is something that is even more aesthetically pleasing. As with everything Apple does, it has further simplified tasks with elegance and grace. I don't suspect there well be many updates to this software, the next OS upgrade or true new OS, will be a new invention that will keep us looking for more. Snow Leopard has gone the distance, with it's fine tuned adjustments apple has listened to its consumers and got it just right. It will be interesting to see whats next in future OS's. Be sure of this though, for 29 bucks you get back Gigabytes of space and left over money to buy some premium coffee with all the work / play you'll be doing on Snow Leopard.

Summary: First of all i would just like to say thank you to all those windows people out there who rant on a Mac OS review site just to get their pro-windows comments out there. If you're not a Mac user then just don't say anything because your opinions don't matter.
Review time: (this is in my experience): Snow Leopard install took me approximately 20 minutes (upgrade from fresh install of Leopard). I have noticed a faster boot time (just a couple of seconds) and applications load faster. I have not noticed any networking issues in either of my regular windows environments (school and home (i'm the only mac user)). Overall it's a great OS and at 30 it's a steal. I'm sure many have heard of using the Snow Leopard disk and upgrading from Tiger without Leopard so Tiger users make sure to google and get info.4 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: Snow Leopard builds on an already successful operating system, by improving speed and reliability, and adding a few welcome features. Many of the improvements are "behind the scenes", but the performance improvement is obvious. Shutdown typically takes less than 10 seconds, and sometimes is as quick as 3 seconds!
One of the new features, which hasn't been widely reported is the built-in Cisco IPSEC client. This is a welcome feature for anyone who connects to a Cisco VPN, and connects much more quickly than the Cisco client on a Windows machine. It usually connects in one or two seconds!
After having used Windows since Windows 3.0, I purchased my first Mac in January. I was immediately impressed with the speed and reliability of Leopard in comparison to Windows XP and Vista. Snow Leopard takes everything that is right in Leopard and improves upon it.4 out of 7 users found this user opinion helpful.

Evolutionary, not revolutionary.
by MagicFeather on August 26, 2009
Pros: Ichat is getting a 4x resolution boost to near-dvd quality. That's excellent in and of itself.
Cons: When was $29 for a new OS ever considered a con?

Complete GARBAGE
by joefosho619 on October 25, 2009
Pros: I like how it can run Windows 7.
Cons: That spinning beach ball is all I see. I click firefox, it freezes for 5 seconds with some stupid beach ball, and then it opens. Well actually all apps for that matter. Sometimes I even see the old fashioned loading cursor too.
Summary: Not even worth it. The only difference I see is the UBIQUITOUS loading beachball. DO NOT BUY!!!

- Description: Mac OS X is the world's most advanced operating system. Built on a rock-solid UNIX foundation and designed to be simple and intuitive, it's what makes the Mac innovative, highly secure, compatible, and easy to use. Quite simply there is nothing else like it. Mac OS X is both easy to use and incredibly powerful. Everything - from the desktop you see when you start up your Mac to the applications you use every day - is designed with simplicity and elegance in mind. So whether you're browsing the web, checking your email, or video chatting with a friend on another continent, getting things done is at once easy to learn, simple to perform, and fun to do. Of course, making amazing things simple takes seriously advanced technology. Which is why Mac OS X is built on a rock-solid, time-tested UNIX foundation that provides unparalleled stability as well as industry-leading support for Internet standards. The most striking feature of a Mac is its elegant user interface, made possible by a graphics engine that's built to leverage the advanced graphics processor in every Mac. This engine provides the power for things like high-definition video, stunning graphic effects, and high-quality animations. Fonts on the screen look beautiful and extremely readable. A soft drop shadow makes it clear at a glance which window is active and which ones are in the background. Document previews using Quick Look are high resolution so you can actually read the text. And built-in support for the PDF format means you can view and create PDFs from almost any application in the system. Since the software on every Mac is created by the same company that makes the Mac itself, you get a completely integrated system. When you have a Mac notebook, for example, it automatically detects and connects to available Wi-Fi networks. It wakes from sleep as soon as you open the display and automatically reconnects to networks so you can get back to work fast. And it gets the most out of your battery by spinning down the hard drive when it's inactive, by intelligently deciding whether the CPU or GPU is best suited to perform a task, and by dimming the screen in low-light conditions. With virtually no effort on your part, Mac OS X protects itself - and you - from viruses, malicious applications, and other threats. It was built for the Internet in the Internet age, offering a variety of defenses from online threats. Because every Mac ships with a secure configuration, you don't have to worry about understanding complex settings. Even better, it won't slow you down with constant security alerts and sweeps. And Apple responds quickly to online threats and automatically delivers security updates directly to your Mac. The versatility and power of Mac OS X make it compatible in almost any environment, including Windows networks. It works with virtually all of today's digital cameras, printers, and other peripherals without the need to download separate drivers. It opens popular file types such as JPG, MP3, and Microsoft Office documents. In addition, Mac OS X includes built-in support for the industry-standard PDF format, so you can read and create PDFs from almost any application in the system - perfect for sharing work with colleagues whether they use a Mac or a PC. And if you want to run Windows on your Mac, you can do that, too. The industrial-strength foundation of Mac OS X ensures that your computing experience remains free from system crashes and compromised performance. Occasionally an application might quit, but it won't affect the rest of your system. And Apple keeps everything running smoothly by releasing software updates that download automatically to your Mac. Many of these updates provide important security enhancements for the operating system. But they also update other Apple software installed on your Mac, including iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand. So with just a click, you can make sure that all your applications continue to run smoothly and safely.
