It took awhile, but Infinity Ward finally got the message that World War II is played out. With modern times and international affairs becoming more and more, shall we say, interesting in recent years, the 1940s just don't carry as much weight as they used to. Perhaps that's why Call of Duty 4 has a new subtitle, Modern Warfare. By bringing things into a fictionalized story that still seems fairly plausible, the developer has made a much heavier game. But COD 4 is more than just an updated setting. It's also an amazing multiplayer first-person shooter and a great but brief single-player campaign with the visual chops to make it a standout shooter in an era filled with seemingly dozens of standout shooters.

While the game may feel short, it covers a lot of ground.
The only real catch is that the single-player is almost shockingly short. If you've been keeping up with this style of game, you'll probably shoot your way to the credits in under five hours. While you can raise the difficulty to give yourself more of a challenge, the main thing this does is make the enemies frustratingly deadly, which sort of detracts from the fun.
While it may have a lack of single-player quantity, it makes up for most of it with its quality. The game tells its story from multiple perspectives, and you'll play as a new British SAS operative as well as a US Marine. The campaign takes you from a rainy night out at sea on a boat that's in the process of sinking to a missile silo where it's on you to save millions from an unsavory nuclear-powered death. Along the way, there are plenty of jaw-dropping moments where you'll look around the room for someone to whom you can say, "I can't believe that just happened." In a world filled with war games in which the good guys come out unscathed and the world is left at total peace, Call of Duty 4 will wake you up like a face full of ice water.
The action in the campaign is usually very straightforward. You have a compass at the bottom of your screen, and the direction of your current objective is very plainly marked. But getting from point A to point B is never as simple as running in a straight line, as you'll be conducting full-scale assaults in Middle Eastern countries by moving from house to house, taking out what seems like a never-ending stream of enemy troops along the way. You'll also get an opportunity to raid Russian farmhouses in search of terrorist leaders, disguise yourself as the enemy, and, in one sequence, don a brushlike ghillie suit and crawl through the brush as enemy troops and tanks roll right past you. It's a breathtaking moment in a campaign filled with breathtaking moments. Unfortunately, it's about half as long as the average shooter, and there are plenty of sequences where you wish there were just one or two more hills to take.
Of course, if you're looking for longevity, that's where the multiplayer comes in. Up to 18 players can get online and get into a match on one of 16 different maps. Many of the levels are taken from portions of the single-player and they offer a healthy mix of wide-open, sniper-friendly areas and tight, almost cramped spaces where grenades and shotguns are the order of the day. There are six game modes to choose from. The old standby is team deathmatch, though you can also play in a free-for-all deathmatch, which isn't as much fun as the team modes. The other modes are more objective-oriented, and a couple of those have you lugging bombs across the map to blow up enemy equipment, or preventing the enemy from blowing up your base. Others have you capturing control points. Lastly, you can change up the game rules a bit with a hardcore setting that makes weapons more realistically damaging or an old-school mode that puts weapons on the ground as pickups and generally moves away from the simulation side of things.

The campaign takes you to multiple locales, but they're all full of guys who are begging to be shot in the face.
In addition to just firing your weapon or tossing grenades, you earn some more interesting tactical moves for skilled play. If you can shoot three opponents without dying, you're able to call in a UAV drone, which basically is an upgraded radar that makes enemy positions show up on your onscreen map for 30 seconds at any time. Normally, enemies blip up onto the map only if they fire their weapon to make their location known. If you can go on a five-kill streak, you can call in an air strike, which brings up a shot of the entire level map and lets you place the air strike wherever you like. When combined with a UAV sweep, this can be really devastating. If you can make it all the way to seven kills--which is actually easier than it sounds--you can call in a helicopter for support. It'll buzz around the map and automatically open fire on enemies, though enemies can shoot it down, too. These additions to the normal first-person shooter gameplay really open up the game a lot and make it superexciting to play.

Summary: This is the best fps I have ever played an probably the best game of any sort. The graphics and visuals are stunning and mixed with a suitable amount of affects it gives you a top notch gaming experience.
The single player campaign is relatively short but gets you familiar with the controls so the game is easier to handle on multi-player. The campaign can get a little confusing sometimes especially with the switching of 2 story lines (SAS and Marines) but it runs over all the controls and visits the multi-player map settings but with some single player objectives.
Multi-player Game mode gives you a large variety of options including 5 unlockable classes and 5 slots to create you own class. On create a class you can choose you primary and secondary weapons as well as 3 different perks which can hep you kill more enemies. the perks are divided neatly into categories so you will have to choose wisely which perk you will choose from each. There are a large variety of maps including a free variety map pack that cam in the form of a patch. From tightly packed office block to wide open farm yards you are sure to find a favourite map. Another good point about the maps is that there are many different climatic scenarios such as thunder storms, heavy rain or even a hot sunny day. A variety of game modes also spill out. These include Team deathmatch, Domination, Free for all, Sabotage and many more. My personal favourite is Free for all. In differnt game modes you get different numbers of points which increase your rank. For example on Free for all you will receive 5 points for a kill, on Team Deathmatch 10 points is awarded because it is harder to kill somebody considering only half the player you can kill compared to free for all.
Like most games now a days you create a profile. From your profile you can switch between single and multi-player game modes, view your rank and challenges, access the multi-player lobby, start a new campaign or enter create a class. There are a great number of challenges spread throughout the game. Most of them are revolved around killing a certain number of enemies with a certain type of gun but there are some miscellaneous ones such as sprinting a certain distance or falling to your death from a certain height. When you complete one of these challenges in a multi-player match you are awarded points. the harder the challenge the more points you are awarded. The points get added on to your rank.
Many people have reported lag while playing the game. I am running a ATI 512mb graphics card with an Intel dual core processor with 3GB of ram and haven't experienced any lag. So overall I highly recommend this game even if you're more into strategy games or TPS because the visuals and gameplay quality really make up for it. -
This is worth the money.

Summary: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the fifth in the series of World War II shooters. This one changes it up by immersing the player into a modern and up-to-date battlefield. The weapons range from an M-21 sniper rifle to a .50 Desert Eagle handgun to an M4 to an M60E4. Most weapons are released through an unlock system. Each rank you gain you unlock something new. This isn't always a weapon but usually new challenges. By completing these challenges you can gain upgrades for existing weaponry. That has to be one of the biggest bonuses of the game. The ability to unlock add-ons to your current gun to upgrade it. Along with the Perk system and the Create-A-Class system, this allows you to create a very customized soldier. This has to make up for the deepest and most thought out online gameplay I've ever seen in a shooter. The graphics are stunning to a point. Some of the guns lack the detail that would have been nice to see like dings and scratches and most piles of rubble and simply sloped models with a texture plastered on them. The game lacks a large physics system that could have made up for the linear battlefields. You are able to shoot through walls (in which it calculates the wall material, bullet size, speed, and distance as well as the firearm that fired it) which is an addition rarely seen but you can destroy things like weak brick walls as you should be able to with something like an RPG. Nor can you rip through tin steel with an RPG. The glass on buildings when hit is seen as a different material and treated as such but it does not shatter as it should, a bullet hole is simply formed. When a car windshield is shot it does shatter and if shot enough the whole thing will blow up. This adds some interesting tactics for those who like to hide behind automobiles. Overall the game makes for an enjoyable and lengthy experience although I believe, unlike the Battlefield games that have such open ended gameplay, once you get through all of your unlocks you may put this one down.

The single best PC game to hit the shelves. Ever.
by greg3305 on January 27, 2008
Pros: Photorealistic graphics unlike anything seen before. Incredible blend of cinematics and gameplay. Improved AI for a smarter, meaner enemy. Finally moved out of the WWII era.
Cons: It doesn't serve you pizza and beer while you're playing.
Summary: This is an incredible update to the Call of Duty line. The gameplay has risen to a whole new level with this release.

The single-player campaign is on the shorter side, but that doesn't really matter because of how impressive the multiplayer is. You can create your own weapon classes, with additional perks available as you increase in rank. The ability to call in air support adds a new twist that keeps the game interesting. And of course, the graphics are still unparalleled.
If you're going to play a game like this, you need a solid computer to run it on. NOT A LAPTOP like the idiot before me was complaining about. Laptops have nowhere near the amount of graphics processing power needed to run a game like this, unless you want to play in 640x480. -

Summary: This game is what I have been looking for since Soldier of Fortune 1 and 2. The Graphics are great, the missions are cool and fun to play, you really feel like your there, especially when you hear the bullets buzzing by your ears, I just wish they showed more blood when you took a bad guy out with sniper rifle kind of anti climactic, other than that I fully recommed this game.

Radeon HD Pro graphics card that still running on an AGP slot.
Most serious gamers would set fire to my computer and if any of them were tree hungers would probably do the same to me for wasting electricity running it......BUT i played COD4 on my friends xbox 36o and then ran it on my computer.........surprisingly i could not tell the diff. I play with most of the graphics settings high and have superb perfomace.
I am shocked by the nearly photographic imaging..............from the smoke to the water to the infantry. mean every bullet hole is accounted for. Its got game play graphics like cartoon movies like Polar Express.......simple amazing........if you buy it for nothing else, the graphics are completely worth it.
Beyond the visuals......the music is great and the plot has u begging on all fours for more. GET THIS GAME...........its worth every penny!!!!!!!! -
