Rockstar dropped the ball on this one
by TacticallyChallenged on December 4, 2008
Pros: If you manage to get the game running, it is the best GTA yet.
Cons: There is not enough room in this box to fully identify all of the cons this game has, i suggest googling for GTA IV PC Errors and you should get a big surprise.

Summary: Rockstar in their rush to get this game out for Christmas failed to notify everyone that they were releasing an Alpha version, this game is not even close to being what a normal development company would consider a release candidate. Rockstar has been quoted that "a small number of users are having issues" this is also untrue, EVERYONE is having issues with this game.
The install process for this game is ridiculously long. Multiple signups are required to play as well as an alarming number of prerequisites unbeknown to the user.
Should you manage to get the game installed without hassles depending on your hardware you might not be able to play the game at all due to numerous errors stemming from known issues with ATI graphics cards and nVidia 7xxx series cards. Errors preventing you from playing the game while logged into Rockstar Social forcing you to log out and play the game without multi-player functionality. Random errors for users of 64bit operating systems, game pad and controller compatibility issues,
Should you finally solve those problems and get into the game you will find out that your graphical options are limited to those that Rockstar thinks your system can handle blocking out certain resolutions and settings. Rockstar cites that medium settings should be used because GTA IV was designed with the future in mind, that does us alot of good right now in the present. Lack of any AA or AF has angered many gamers.
Should you get past those errors, depending on your hardware you can look forward to fps ranging from 1fps to 30fps due to a major memory leak that makes gameplay damn near impossible as well unexplained crashes and severe lag that varies system to system.
These are just a small number of the total issues plaguing this release, should you be in the market for this game this holiday season i suggest checking out google and doing a little research, or head over to some local forums where GTA gamers are found, anyone of them should be able to inform you of their opinion of this release of Grand Theft Auto.
In conclusion personally i regret wasting my money on this game, should you buy this for anyone this holiday season you will just be giving them the gift of grief because its unlikely they will be able to play the game. Rockstar has lost many fans with this release, Buyer beware.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

by pinkfloyd1979 on March 29, 2011
Pros: Great game for adults with improved graphics in a ficticious version of New York City. Radio and TV commercials and the DJs are funny as well.
Cons: Not for childeren and packed with bugs Rockstar games denies exist and refuse to fix.
Critical bug using the XBox 360 controller not allowing you to shoot in pool or scroll through cell phone menuSummary: Do not waste your money until Rockstar games fixes all the bugs.

2 thumbs down to Rockstar, and GTA 4
by DavyRocket on February 15, 2011
Pros: Lots of cool buildings to look at from the outside only. Great sound enviroments. Cars look way better then previous gta games considering its dx9.
Frame rates are good for me with my GeForce 9600 gso 768 mb.Cons: Sign up for 2 accounts just to play, and save bad idea.
Game pre maturely released
All missons the same
Little to no support from R* gives me the feeling as Nico always says "It's all about the money" Who cares about the rest.

Summary: From the very start, starting with the install process has been utterly terrible. I have played gta 3, vc, sa, and now unfortunetly 4. I am about 3/4 from being done, and I don't even feel like finishing it. Its very BORING doing the same thing over and over again I have never played a game that PISSED me off more than this one from pc crashes, to unable to authenticate cd. This game so far has given me 2 bsod's. Yet there is NO support from Rockstar. Geez, they don't even have a forums. Just goes to show what is more important to them now. MONEY!!! They are now no different than any other "BIG TIME" company. As for the game itself, The navigation system is really stupid. Telling me to take the long route. AI is even worse than previous installments. I do not like the fact that MS forced R* to only allow full support for the xbox controller for pc, If you want any other, you need a 3rd party program which still has not worked for me. The street system in Liberty city is terrible. Bridges to roads do not line up properly causing a car to nearly flip. I have'nt fully explored the whole city, and really took a look at buildings and such, I generally do that after I finished the game. It looks to me like R* now has a infamous error in checking/testing all objects and textures. Have a look at this http://www.drxdesigns.com/screenshots/rstrademark.jpg Every single installment has this texture stretching somewhere. I am a freelance 3d graphic artist so finding these things are very easy for me. There are many glitches in the game. In other games they can become quite funny. In gta 4 not the least bit funny. The only positive side to gta 4 is the graphics. For a dx9 based game its awesome, but awesome looks DOES NOT make a great game! Bottomline is if this is the direction Rockstar is going with gta meaning being bought by our lovely monopoly company Microshaft/soft, very little to no support for PC users, 100% boring/same missions over and over. Then 4 will be my last. My trust in Rockstar has gone from 120% to about 2%. I really hope they are actually reading, and listening to they're "paying" customers, because from what I have seen so far they are losing alot of us! If they are listening to us, Rockstar.. PLEASE for the love of God... GET RID OF MICROSHAFT! They are seriously hurting your reputation, just like they killed they're own.

A vast array of bugs, glitches and errors! Infuriating!
by sonofhendrix on January 23, 2010
Pros: It builds on a great game idea.
The in game physics are great.
Good attention to detail and great AI.
Multiplayer mode with many types of game styles.Cons: Troublesome installation with 2 online accounts required to play the game.
A vast wealth of errors, many not allowing the game to run at all.
Not finished or tested properly before release.
Poor customer support and substandard graphics performance.Summary: Bugs, glitches, errors, comaptibility issues and online account problems make this game very risky to buy if your not a computer expert. There are even problems with re-installing the game(...
Summary: Bugs, glitches, errors, comaptibility issues and online account problems make this game very risky to buy if your not a computer expert. There are even problems with re-installing the game(revoking of the liscience???) if your pc happens breaks down.
Bottom line is, its obvious this game was hastily ported onto the PC by inept programmers who did not even intend to release it as a polished and tested PC product. GTA IV for the PC was apparently an afterthought to make more profits after its sales on the game consoles. Over priced, faulty, designed for a games console and over the top security to insure they squeezed out as many legitimate sales as possible. Purchase at your own risk! -

Jumping Through Hoops

Pros: Great graphics if you have the lastest custom built PC.
Cons: Must join Social Club, Must have Windows Live Act. Poor controller set-up option. Must be logged into Live Act. in order to save game. Seems you must be online to play. Not a stand alone game

Summary: What happened to installing the game the game and then playing it like the prior GTA games. What happens if you don't have internet connection, can't play. Prior games as long as your PC was running you could play and save progress. With this one it took me a 1 &1/2 hours just to sign up all the Acts., download, install and link-up Acts. as required. AHH HA now I can play, no must change keyboard set, where is this done at? After clicking on all the areas I find and configure everything. NOW i get to play, I reach a save point and try to save, WHAT a message telling me I can not save unless I am logged into Windows Live Act. @#%**%###@@@. I pay over $40.00 and I don't have anything to show (or Play). I tried to get a refund HAHAHA. Got $10.00 from a local game shop. Rockstar has figured out how to sell us AIR. You buy a game and can not play on it's own. Why didn't PC review sites make us aware of these things instead they give a high rating. Check Amozon's reviews, almost 200 1 & 2 star reviews. I know I will NEVER buy a game that has ANY connection to Rockstar. Rockstar should have also listed these requirements on the box for review before buying. Looks like false advertisement. Then try contacting Rockstar for support. I tried, I was unable to sign up for the Social Club. It kept returning to the 1st page after clicking the continue. Been two days and no support. This shows all they care about is getting you money and giving you nothing back. Sounds like our government. I wish I had read the private reviews before I wasted my money.

A great game! (Given you have the right hardware)
by ShinjukuRaver on January 7, 2009
Pros: - More in-depth than previous GTA games.
- The city feels "alive" with much better AI.
- Graphics are absolutely amazing.
- Gameplay can keep you hooked for hours.Cons: - Very poor optimization.
- Even the best of systems can't run it on the highest of settings.
- FPS tends to drop occasionally when loading buildings into the draw distance.
- Physics engine for vehicles are a bit of a turn down.Summary: This game is extremely fun and detailed !

After the most recent patch, graphic optimization has greatly improved and there are more graphic options given. Definitely a MAJOR improvement over the first patch.
The storyline is much more in-depth than previous Grand Theft Auto games and adds to the feeling of the whole game. The AI is much more reactive to what you do. Ex. You break the window of a car to hotwire it - Citizens will take note and look (And police officers will start running over if present.) The fun factor behind this game is what makes it last with the storyline and the massive recreation of New York City with its diverse populace.
The graphics, given you have the right hardware, can prove downright amazing! There is a good amount of high dynamic range lighting, the cars are less blocky, and the whole game is filled with smooth textures galore. But, this also tends to be its downfall. There has been NUMEROUS reports of low FPS even on the best of computers. I have been sitting in the range of 29 - 38 FPS, depending on whether on moving and my location, with a nVidia 9800 GT at 1680 x 1050 resolution. It is definitely nice enough to play. Its not remotely close to the limits of the GTX 260 or 280, but it runs the game pretty smooth except for a occasional drop to 25 FPS. Also, optimization is at a low. This game was designed to be able to run on future hardware without requiring too many patches and the choice to choose your graphic settings are pretty minimal for a PC game.
There is also the problem with having to go through registering for Rockstar Social Club and Games for Windows - Live! They tend to be time consuming with registering and what not and downloading the required programs to even just play GTA IV itself. To sum it up: Extra registration during installation is WAY too time consuming.
But in the end, it all boils down to the game itself. The game is amazing, but it carries its flaws. Worth $50? Possibly. Should you wait? It would be a better idea. Not exactly worth $50 to many people, but worth it if you are a die-hard GTA series fan.
