Beautiful "sequel" to Half-Life 2
by Coconutchuck626 on September 20, 2006
Pros: Top notch story, excellent enemy and ally AI, only $20? sweeeet....
Cons: Short. seems like it's too short. I want more, dang it!
Summary: Wow. It's like it never left me. Half-life 2 picked up right where Lost Coast left off. While Lost Coast was merely a "side mission" at best, Episode 1 ...
Summary: Wow. It's like it never left me. Half-life 2 picked up right where Lost Coast left off. While Lost Coast was merely a "side mission" at best, Episode 1 blows it out of the park. Excellent controls, excellent AI, excellent everything.
Except length. I can dig the whole episodic approach to telling a story. It beats the heck out of "micro transactions" and it doesn't get costly. That's great because I don't wanna have to keep plunking a few dollars here, a few there; I want it in one packacge.
But that's besides the point. I think that this is an extention of the best FPS out there. Hopefully Half-Life 2: Episode 2 will be at least, if not more fun (and longer) than this one. -
Great game! Loved it!
by alexdadoof on July 17, 2006
Pros: Great Storyline, worked well with the end of Half Life-2
Cons: Kinda short, i'd expect a little bit more than roughly 4-5 hours of game play; maybe i played too fast...
Summary: as opposed to the review of the person below me... (whoever said you play as ALYX)
I have actually played this game.

I have actually played this game.
I've enjoyed the half-life series ever since it first came out.

Excellent gameplay, stunning graphics
by kd6dm on June 24, 2006
Pros: Graphics and immersive gameplay
Cons: WAY too short
Summary: I thoroughly enjoyed the episode, right up to where I hopped on the train, heading for the next battle...but wait, it's over!

Great game but short
by yigzat on June 4, 2006
Pros: Magnificent graphics, Excellent AI on NPC's, and interesting follow-up to Half-Life 2, commentary track from the designers
Cons: Over way too soon, but for the price, quality, and frequency of new episodes, not bad.

Summary: This follow-up stand-alone to Half-life has improved graphics, play elements, and enjoyability that is better than the half-life 2 parent game in almost every aspect. The enemy AI is much better, with soldiers and zombies showing such advanced behaviors as hiding and swarming. And the graphics are improved to include HDR (high dynamic range) aspects for those with newer graphics cards (ATI x1xx and NVIDIA 6800+).
This game is set entirely in the citadel and City-17. Despite other reviews, you do NOT play Alyx at any time, but you and she travel as a team through the entire game. But you DO have several new enemy types (Zombines and Stalkers), use roller mines in new ways, and have some rather interesting trips in trains and cars.
Another interesting addition is a commentary track for the entire game, like the Lost Coast level available as part of the purchase. After finishing the game, it's really cool to play the entire game and listen to how the game was designed at well placed commentary points. An excellent addition!
The only negative is that it is short (4-6 hours for people familiar with the game series). But as this is a well-designed, gorgeous game, and the designers are planning new episodes every 6 months until HL3 is released, one can't complain. -
Playing as TWO characters
by xtremist5150 on April 28, 2006
Pros: Playability
Cons: long wait time for game release, cliffhanger ending
Summary: You do not play ONLY as Alyx, you mostly still play as Gordon but ALSO play as Alyx on some levels. Please study the review further before making assumptions. :-p
