Summary: At the end of 2006 I was playing Heroes 2 (for the umpteenth time in the last ten years). Then I was given Heroes V and turned to that with great enthusiasm. Not entirely misplaced for the game is visually most attractive, Yet after two weeks, I find myseld returning to Heroes II, Zeus and Rome III without feeling it at all likely that I shall still be playing Heroes V by 2010. To say I have found Heroes V somewhat disappointing gives a bad impression, yet it must be put that way. From a technical viewpoint Heroes V is marvellous and I have enjoyed individual games as an elf, wizard or necromancer, but in doing so I have no sense of achievemrent. Like others, I have not found the Tear of Assha, so the rest of the campaign is non-existant for me. As a wizard (single scenario) I have explored the desert and underlying dungeon and bullied their inhabitants for some hours without even approaching the purpose of this operation. And as a necromancer I have explored the darkened realm without catching sight of any lurking opposition.
Looking back on this time, I think it well used, but not worth continuing. I do admire the scenery and thoroughly enjoy watching automated battles. But nothing has encouraged me (others may feel differently) to conduct them myself. Thus I have payed less and less attention to the magical possibilities or the abilities of individual creatures, nor have I conducted a siege or any longer concern myself with the skills of the next available hero. My conclusion about Heroes V is that the makers have enjoyed displaying their technical expertise in use of texture, shadows, reflections and other eye-catching programming events, and for those I applaud them. But what they have forgotten is MY side of the game, namely that it is played for entertainment, Amusement, ENJOYMENT. And there it is sadly lacking.
For entertainment value, Heroes V ls not really worth the trouble. There are older, better games available My assessment is 4 out of 10.
Summary: This game is amazing. I am glad to see that the might and magic world has not died. I am a very old fan. This game is a definate must for all heroes fans.
