Summary: Prey;
I just finished the 2nd time through and have finally figured that with this game it is more of a love/ hate relationship thing with me than with any other FPS I've played lately and it isn't because of the games engine or bugs.
The game it's self is to say the least..... 'Different".
You spend your time running through portals, solving fairly simple puzzles and in the process shooting some varied aliens along the way.
The game fortunately does have cheats you can use if you have problems with the few fights that seem to be a tad overwhelming or if you get stuck in an area you can't get out of (using the 'noclip' cheat) For instance there is a spot where you must jump down on some pipes, 'crouch' and go under a floor to get to the next area. In the process of experimenting, I had pushed a movable box into the pipe area and when I jumped down to try to move this box to the side so I could pass, I became hopelessly locked in place. I couldn't move to the side, couldn't jump out, couldn't move the box, couldn't crouch... Stuck! (TGFC = Thank God for cheats)
Probably the most frustrating part of the game are the long cut-scenes! (little mini-movies up to about a couple of minutes in length) They actually tell the story (as the game it's self has little as it should be for a FPS (FPS= First person shooter)
However this makes replaying the game terrible as there is no ability to 'jump' through these cut scenes. SO on replays, you are forced to sit through these reruns again!.... Reruns? ....Sigh!
Play is actually sort of refreshing. Besides this endless portals to run through there are various rooms where you are thrown upside down due to different gravity settings. Other rooms have the ability for you to shoot little gravity triggers to flip the room so you can walk on the walls or make the roof the floor..... Handy to get around certain obstacles.
I have to admit I enjoyed Prey mostly assuming running through the inside of an giant alien organism with disgusting alien body parts spewing everything from multi legged monsters from vaginal offaces to acidic vomit (what I hope that's what it was ) from other openings, to exploding alien eggs.... Whew!
The FPS part is really more 'Find portal search' but when the bad guys show up you'd better be ready to 'duck & cover'. The hard part is some of the toughest critters are in rooms with little or no cover.... Luckily there is a 'quick save' with no limits on how many times you can save.
The game in a nut shell, is: Find portal, kill critters, find switch, flip switch, find portal, do something, portal, something, end level (get the idea?)
Unlike Doom 3 that is so dark it is (for me at least) not a fun game to play because of the eye strain, Prey is lighted well enough to do and the few areas where you need light, the lighter works well.
All in all Prey is extremely linear and the portals make it more of a mini level running from one to another just to reach the end of the level. The indian hero (and cast) are stereo typed to the letter. I kept waiting to hear "Ugh, white man speak with forked tongue"..... Thankfully it never came
The weapons give you a bit of a varied play and ammo is plentiful.
I guess one of the best things was, I encountered no bugs (other then getting myself stuck in place/ my own fault for doing something the game didn't intend me to do)
I'm so divided by this game, I'll neither recommend.... nor not recommend you try this game.
If you're a FPS fan, you'll have to base purchasing on if you want to try something new or different. (and really strange)
And lastly if you get stuck..... The forum gang is helpful....
And wheeee! You get to sign up for another web site forum (like the 20 or 30 you already belong to aren't enough.........
