The good: Integrated auxiliary input, easy setup.
The bad: Downward-firing midrange distorts sound stage; muddy bass; lacks headphone jack; drab design.
The bottom line: We have few compliments to give the Altec Lansing Octane 7 speaker set. The awkwardly placed midrange driver and side-firing sub come off muddy and overbearing, and the constant adjustments aren't worth the cost, especially when Altec Lansing offers a better-sounding system for the same price.

Summary: it's a good product for the price. I think that it could be much better if Altec Lansing do a change in the subwoofer speaker used for the bass, for sure that will resolve the bass issue. So if don't want to get distortion use the treble and bass control for your songs and movies.

bass powerful, had problems with high frequency driver

Pros: -cool design
-convenient AUX input
-easy set up
-strong and big bass unit, if bass is what you love then you'll love these
Cons: -bass over powering
-problems with high frequency driver, sounds very scratchy as if damaged, so had speakers replaced and had the same problem, pretty weird surely they couldn't have this problem with all sets...

poor design poor result

Pros: speakers have a small desktop foot print
Cons: - Poor sound overall
- Too much bass, even at the lowest setting.
- Can't seperately control the volume of the bass unit (as opposed to bass level overall)
- Midrange gone missing
- If you put your bass unit under the desk, that is where you have to crawl
Summary: Altec Lansing have embarrassed themselves with this one. I wasn't expecting good sound for the price, but I hadn't bargained for such a poor result.

I've had to stuff an old sock in the sound expansion port of the bass unit just to cut the bass level, although this adversely affects the quality of the bass as well as reducing the bass volume.
It was a mistake to buy this one.
