The good: These compact powered speakers deliver phenomenal sound for their size. They offer simple, attractive styling, and two audio inputs.
The bad: The speakers lack a remote control, and the volume control is inconveniently located on the backside, and there's no way to toggle between inputs. The Audioengines are also a bit pricey compared with less refined PC speakers.
The bottom line: Though they're not cheap, the Audioengine 2 speakers are an ideal combination of compact size and good looks, delivering great sound for their size.

Terrific value.
by fussylistener on November 15, 2010
Pros: 1. Amazingly well-constructed small speakers.
2. Music on my Itune library sounds like...well... music.
3. Far superior in sound and construction quality to "upgraded" computer speakers systems.
4. The $200 price tag is actually a deal.Cons: No cons. This may be the only product that I've ever bought that lives up to its hype.

Summary: Because of the setup of my den, I can't sit in front of my computer screen and be in the sweet spot of my high- end, audiophile speakers which are located to the side and behind my desk. So, when I want to listen to music through them, the sound is not unpleasing but there is no soundstage whatsoever. Since I set up my little Audioengines angled in toward me on each side of my computer , I now enjoy listening to music in my Itunes library. I haven't ever had a similar experience with the many sets of "upgraded" speaker systems that over the years I have ordered with my computers. I had expected that the bass on the little Audioengine 2s would have to be so thin that I would probably need to spring for the optional (and not notably inexpensive) subwoofer. That turned out not to be the case. There is enough accurate midrange bass to keep me a happy camper. Also, the speakers look good and on their little stands don't take up an unreasonable amount of desktop real estate. I buy a fair amount of audio and video gear, and my acquisition of the $200 Audioengines has been my most satisfying consumer purchase in a very long time. Notwithstanding the previous review, in my opinion the generally positive and sometimes rhapsodic professional reviews of this product are entirely warranted.

Hands down the best stereo package.
by StallionV8 on August 26, 2011
Pros: Super Accurate Mid-High Range
Respectable bass for such a small package
Very high quality components and driversCons: Need to be mindful of speaker placement. I currently have them set up in my dorm and the bookshelf accompanied with the cinder-block back can cause annoying bass reverberations. But as I said, it isn't the speakers fault, rather placement so be mindful of

Summary: For point of reference I own a Bose Companion 3 2.1 speaker system, and the AudioEngines simply blow it out of the water. Sure you lack the bass line punch from a subwoofer, but overall the sound is much more natural. There is no distortion when the volume is really cranked up and it is amazing to see and hear these little guys do their job. If you are looking to upgrade your desktop speakers, look no further.
A note on the bass: these speakers are able to reproduce natural lows. You aren't going to be rattling your teeth fillings, but they dive deep without "mushing" out.

Totally Disappointing!
by kenstee on August 6, 2010
Pros: Nice packaging
Have 30 day return policyCons: Poorly defined sound
Poor bass reproduction
"Muddy" sounding
Poor price/value relationship
Need to buy their stands for the speaker. Not included.Summary: To be honest, my cheaper and older Klipsch Pro Media 2.1's put them to shame. Not even close. Back they go!

Specifications

- Description: The Audioengine 2 is a great introduction to high-quality audio and the perfect upgrade for your computer or select play. The Audioengine 2 (A2) is about one-third the size of Audioengine's flagship Audioengine 5 system and is an excellent computer audio upgrade or small room speaker. Audioengine used the same custom tweeters as the Audioengine 5, matched them with newly designed compact Kevlar woofers and then added high-performance amplifiers with gold-plated speaker connectors. All this great engineering is wrapped in wood cabinets with a hand-polished finish to create a premium quality desktop multimedia speaker system that puts those plastic computer speakers to shame! To say that the bass on Audioengine 2 is substantial for their size may be an understatement, but you should be the judge. The bass comes from some very clever acoustic and electrical design and without using any DSP or fake bass boost circuits. Wood remains a preferred speaker enclosure material for its stiffness at higher volume levels and the sealed cabinet focuses just the right amount of low end from the tuned front port slots. The A2 was designed for your desktop but is also perfect for smaller rooms. Well-suited for all types of music, movies, and videogames, the A2 sounds great with or without a subwoofer. Using a similar design as the Audioengine 5, the A2 power amplifiers are built inside the left speaker, providing a very efficient system. An auto-sleep standby circuit was also included to conserve power. Audioengine has included 1/8 mini jack and RCA inputs so connecting A2 is easy. No software installs, plug-ins, or sound card upgrades. The Audioengine 2 sets a new level of audio and aesthetic quality for powered multimedia speakers and further closes the gap between computer speakers and home audio.
