Excellent Value!

Cons: Weaker Mids, Short Wires, Kinds Ugly...

21 Months Later
My old RCA Receiver was dying, I had a new 32" LCD, and I decided to go the HTPC route.
That meant I needed speakers.
Now as I had just purchasesd the aformentioned LCD, as well as a wireless keyboard, tuner card and a few other components, I didn't have a large ammount of cash left.
Enter the Logitech X-540's.
Now, these are not in the same league as Z-5500's. If you want the best, these are not for you.
If you need solid speakers on a budget, however, the X-540's merit serious consideration.
Firstly, they have one big advantage over most other value 5.1 systems.
Generally, value speakers have all the controls located on the right channel speaker. While this may not be a problem for anyone using speakers on a desktop PC, in an HTPC set-up, the speakers are usually a fair distance from the user, and are often wall or ceiling mounted. The X-540 ships with a seperate wired remote. It's not fancy, but it does have a good set of controls and a headphone port.
It includes volume, bass (subwoofer), power and matrix (upmix).
The sub is a fairly compact bottom firing ducted design. It produces tight accurate sounds at a much higher volume than any sane person would need.
The satellites produce crisp clear mids and highs although the mids are a bit quiet and can get a bit lost.
The satelites also have hard-wired cables, which are a bit short for an HTPC system, but they can be easily extended with RCA extention cables.
The four corner speakers all have bases that can be swiveled for wall mounting, while the centre speaker is designed to be able to mount on the top of a flat screen TV/Monitor; a big plus in the HTPC system.
One last comment about the satelites, and it's purely a matter of taste, but I find them kind of ugly.
Not oh-my-god-I've-gone-blind ugly, bot not really somthing you'd want to show off.
Now, I'm not a hard-core audiophile, but I am pickier than any of my friends or family when it comes to sound quality.
I tried these with a variety of music from my collection, including hard rock, jazz, pop, and classical. As I mentioned before, the mids tend to get lost a bit, but overall, very clean accurate sound. I'd actually rate the sound quality a fair bit better than my old RCA 2250 reciever.
I also tried Gran Turismo 3 for PS2, Mechwarrior 4 for PC, and Warcraft III. All three came through wonderfully, with the positional audio working beautifully.
Lastly, I watched Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, and Casino Royal, all on DVD. Here's where the sub really got a chance to shine. It held up perfectly with no complaints.
All around, solid performers for a solid price.
Updated on Jan 21, 2009
Well, it's been well over a year since my original review, so I though it was about time for an update.
In the intervening time, I've replaced my 32" LCD with a 42", upgraded my HTPC, replaced my PS2 with a PS3, and added a Wii to the mix, but the X-540's are still alive and kicking!
With the PS3 came Blu-Rays and HD Audio, but the X-540's still hold up great!
I've watched Dark Knight, Hellboy and 5th Element to name a few, and they sound AWESOME!
The mid-range is still a bit quiet when watching movies, but I've added an equalizer on the HTPC side of things which has allowed me to tweak the sound and has helped MP3's and and games a lot.
All in all, I'm still happy with my speakers, and my original verdict still stands.

Summary: This product is a great piece of equipment for people who don't want to pay a lot of money to get good quality surround sound. Its very easy to set up, and the sound is great for casual gamers and computer users. Also, it can hook into other devices like gaming systems (X-Box 360, adapter included) and in some cases televisions (although I haven't tried that). Even though the wired remote is good, it would be a lot better wireless for obvious reasons, and it only controls bass and volume levels, but it seems a fair trade for the very low price (in most stores about $100) The only other problem for me was that the rear speakers had only 14', and the room I put it in needed 25'. I got an extension from radioshack, but the noise level from the rear speakers is about half of the sound coming from the front. I'm not sure if all systems do this or this was due to the extension, but it was the only con that I could see. This is great for improving your gaming and music experience, and I couldn't believe what a big difference it made in games and music that I had already played to death. I highly recommend this product if you only have the 2.0 speakers that come with most desktops, it definitely makes everything seem better.

Speakers are great for the money paid out of pocket
by patangelone on January 22, 2009
Pros: The 5.1 setup improves everything you listen to. Blu-ray movies on the PC sound great, as do CD's & MP3's. For the problems with the volume control, base & treble, no equalization or surround settings, buy a program called SRS Audio Sand Box 5.1
Cons: I couldn't find any problems to complain about...

For all the people who complained about the volume control, base & treble, no equalization or surround settings, buy a program called SRS Audio Sand Box 5.1. Good Price for the bargain
by pinhead6793 on April 6, 2008
Pros: It has amazing bass, and 5 speakers for the ultimate surround system
Cons: The bass when turned up too much, seems to rattle a lot if you have a really bassy song!

Summary: I think that this speaker system is a good buy, i bought it over the Altec Lancing 2.1 Satellite powered system, and now i kinda wish i would've gotten that one, but since im kinda stuck i have to put up with this one.
I would recommend buying this one if you are'nt looking for a Hi-Fi up loud all the time speaker system.
Like i said, the bass rattles WAY TO MUCH when over half way up, i dont know if this is a loose something, or what, but it sounds horrible
The FFD2 is a great advantage,though.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

For the price these are excellent!!!!!!!!
by thebabifacepimp on August 3, 2007
Pros: Cheap but doesn't sound cheap. Easy to listen to. Remote is not dedicated to any speakers. Sub Woofer puts out realistic bass.
Cons: Sounds could be more detailed. Shouldn't have to put the volume up a quarter of the volume control to start hearing music.
Summary: Before I purchased this system I had some outdate creative 2 speakers. They were okay until they started fading in and out because they were just about finished. So I ...
Summary: Before I purchased this system I had some outdate creative 2 speakers. They were okay until they started fading in and out because they were just about finished. So I knew I needed some speakers quick! I was going for 2 speaker set not a home theater in the begining but I saw this at sam's club for 59.87!!
A home theater system for 60 dollars, you gotta be kidding me!!! For the price the sound is exceptional and satisfying. If you and not a audiophile and want a good deal than these are for you. Sub woofer is solid and the five speakers produce an even amount of surround sound.
Some 2 speaker systems cost 99 dollars which probably wouldn't put out this surround sound. Trust me on this note you won't be disappointed. Try your local wholesale stores to see if you can get the same price as me!! At least try them1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: This is a wonderful system for a reasonable price. It has great sound quality, a sleek design, and pumps out a lot of noise. I've heard louder systems, but I'm not sure why anyone would want anything louder than this. I have this hooked up to my XBOX 360, but often times plug my iPhone strait into the green jack for surround sound music. My favorite feature is the control switch which allows you to plug in any pair of standard headphones or earbuds. I use this to play games late at night when others would prefer to sleep without the sound of gunfire. It's a good product, if your in the market for it don't hesitate.

Great Sound for the Price.
by shaddowdragon on May 5, 2011
Pros: Cheaper than the X-530 for some reason while having a desk remote separate so I can place the speakers where I want. Matrix mode sounds great converting 2.1 to 5.1 output. I get lovely effects with some music tracks.
Cons: I wish the Matrix Mode to could be set to automatic. If there is 5.1 input it automaticaly turns it on.
Summary: I'd Buy a set for every room in my house
