Summary: Ever since this collection was announced, I was immediately thrilled, especially since my brother took the Genesis back to college with him as a little gimmick. Let me tell you that this collection just about hits the spot for anyone who has a love for the Sega Genesis and doesn't own one, or just is nostalgic and loves to play old school games. For me, it's all of the above, anf this collection is just great all around. It features the expected titles and series, like Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2, the second being much better, Golden Axe and its two sequels (#3 was never released in the U.S., so there's a plus), Phantasy Star II, III and IV (IV cost $100 at its release, but now you get it for $20), Shinobi III (very well the best game in the collection) and Shadow Master, Columns, Altered Beast, and many more. There are even rare gems like Ristar, Alex Kidd and the Enchanted Castle, Decap Attack, and more. There are unlockable arcade games and interviews, as well as trailers for Phantasy Star Universe and the upcoming PS3 title Virtua Fighter 5, but the games like Zaxxon, Tac/Scan, and Zector are bad games really, but Altered Beast Arcade is much better than its Genesis counterpart. There are some games that I wish could have been included, like Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles, which, when combined, were the best in the series, and where's Streets of Rage? I knew it was missing it since this collection's inception in mid 2006, but I figured it would be unlockable. This is a real bummer for an otherwise great collection, and would have jumped it to a 9 easily, at least. Also, I encountered some emulation issues. The impact sound in Columns is way off, every character screams the same way in Golden Axe 1, when actually each playable charater screamed differently when they died, and women sounded like women, so in this version they all sound like a wussy man, and only playable characters scream when they die in Golden Axe 3, when enemies should scream when they die as well. They are only sound problems, but they are definitely noticeable. These errors keep this stellar collection from perfection, but since Sonic, all three Golden Axes, Shinobi, Altered Beast, and others are so great to play and play this well, you can't pass this up when it's only $20 for 33 games.
